RIP: Charlie Louvin
“Oh, this is too bad,” Spence says. “Charlie Louvin died.”
“They were the best,” says Admin.
“Charlie and Ira? As a brother harmony duo?”
“Exactly. When did Ira die?”
“1965. He was the crazy one, Charlie was the sweet one.”
“Something eerie about them when they were at their best. You think it’s that crazy-sweet combo?”
“Maybe. Might make a good movie – touring with Elvis, the music business breaking Ira’s heart, Charlie surviving so long, getting more and more respect as the years went by.”
“What’s your favorite number of theirs?”
“‘When I Stop Dreaming.’ Yours?”
“‘Great Atomic Power.'”
“Here’s to Charlie.”

Good morning. Another big snow day that misses us. This has been a good winter for me, weather-wise.
10:19 am on January 27th, 2011
Rio,
I just read your last night’s comments about the test. I think you could pass it with flying colors if you weren’t so honest. No one who has ever read the blog would ever know that you could be grumpy and weren’t laid back unless you told them.
10:42 am on January 27th, 2011
Sad!…Today’s post has made me very sad…sniff!…I’m not a huge country music fan, but Charlie and Ira played and sang the kind of music that grandma loved. I hope they play for her in heaven…snuffle!
10:47 am on January 27th, 2011
Stover!…She should be recovering from the procedure by now….sniff!…I hope everything went okay and they find out what is wrong with her lungs….snort!
10:48 am on January 27th, 2011
We have heard the Louvins’ songs on oldies radio. We looked them up on the internet to refresh our memory. It seems Ira lived the country music songs to the extreme. His wife shot him 4 times in the back when he tried to strangle her. Ira died in 1965 when a drunk driver smashed into his car. There was a DUI warrant out for Ira at that time.
RIP Charlie

Mom got her love of traditional country music from her grandpa and her love of baseball from the same grandpa.
10:54 am on January 27th, 2011
I hope I’m right about this:
Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary to Dan and Zoe today and may you have many more happy years.
11:00 am on January 27th, 2011
Siber H – Clink
11:07 am on January 27th, 2011
SiberH!…Wow! I’m impressed!…snort!… Happy Anniversary Dan and Zoe!…snorkel!
11:14 am on January 27th, 2011
I’ll let them know and thanks all! Zoë is out doing some errands. Dan is waiting for the nurse.
We had to dig out again. Instead of the 3.5 inches they were calling for we got a foot of snow.
Nice to have Spence and Admin not arguing. I don’t remember this duo at all. Not a big Country music fan here. Though from what Siber-H has said, there’s a reason for all those lyrics.
11:30 am on January 27th, 2011
Siber-H, you do have a memory! You remembered this time and we didn’t.
Happy anniversary Dan and Zoe!
11:39 am on January 27th, 2011
Melanie – You’re going to have to stop hogging all our snow. It’s wanted right here in ski country.
Dan and Zoe – happy, happy anniversary! Sixty is a big number, and in dog years, wow, off the charts.
11:46 am on January 27th, 2011
I bet the Newfs are loving the snow. We recently looked at that picture of Patsy in the snow on Melanie’s bookmark. That snow would be over my head. What fun, but then again, how would I know as I have never been in snow that deep.
11:51 am on January 27th, 2011
Happy Anniversary to Dan & Zoe, may you have many more!
Good Luck to B.
Keep getting better Melanie.
12:00 pm on January 27th, 2011
Good morning/afternoon, and Happy Anniversary to Dan and Zoe. Not too many people get to spend 60 years together, and they are still so much in love, which is wonderful!
OK, I have a grammar question for all you English majors out there. Barb’s co-worker has a daughter in 4th grade. She had the following question yesterday, which she got wrong: “Amy and Fred want or wants to do something”. She answered want and got it wrong. We say that want is correct, because you could substitute They instead of Amy and Fred, and say They want. The teacher said Amy and Fred wants is correct, because Fred is singular and you would say he wants. That just doesn’t seem correct to us. What do you all think? Too bad Bee isn’t back yet.
12:29 pm on January 27th, 2011
MagPie!… My vote is for “want”….grunt!….I think that teacher is wrong. Clearly the ‘Amy and Fred’ part make it plural…snort!
12:31 pm on January 27th, 2011
MagPie! The 4th grader is correct. Too bad about that teacher.
12:36 pm on January 27th, 2011
I vote for want.
12:38 pm on January 27th, 2011
Thanks guys, I knew she was right. The sad thing is the little girl is bright, and she told her mom she would have had 100% if she had gotten that one question correct. Plus, she will no doubt remember it incorrectly.
1:01 pm on January 27th, 2011
I think this should be brought up with the teacher, especially since it means 100%. That would help the little girl to remember it correctly.
1:25 pm on January 27th, 2011
There is no question. The teacher is WRONG. You are right in your reasoning. The names can be replaced by they which is plural= They want. I can’t believe that happened.
1:45 pm on January 27th, 2011
+5 this morning and I had to turn off the car heater on the way to work because I was too hot!!! But it snowed all night so I need to shovel the driveway when I get home.
Too bad about the teacher {{{sigh}}}
I remember Loretta Lynn and the Louvin Brothers having a contract dispute in her early days. She has spoken highly of them and recognizes their importance in helping her in the business. I do not like most of today’s country-pop music as I want country music to have more of a “country” sound.
1:59 pm on January 27th, 2011
Hi everyone – what is up with some of the teachers today??? Not all, but the bad ones are REALLY bad. We agree that this issue needs to be brought to the attention of the teacher, and or administrator. How many children are going to be taught incorrectly by this one teacher? We decry the use of incorrect grammer in today’s culture, and here is an example of why its happening. (As Corgis, we may not always spell things correctly, and maybe make grammatical mistakes, but humans need to know better)
And now that we are down off our soapbox….
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DAN AND ZOE!
2:34 pm on January 27th, 2011
I just noticed the video had been added up top. Mom loves that deep country stuff and cranked up the volume. Sometimes I think it just sounds like a bunch of Siberian Huskies yowelin’.
2:59 pm on January 27th, 2011
Maybe that is why I like it Mollypop. Never thought of that before.
We will be gone for awhile. Hopefully Stover will have checked in with us by the time we return.
3:18 pm on January 27th, 2011
Waiting!…I’m getting very tired of waiting for Stover to check in…grunt!…She’s probably sleeping off the drugs….sniff!
3:20 pm on January 27th, 2011
We have been dug out. Took three different people doing three different tasks, but you will be glad to know that none of the three were the three of us!
Snicker.
Dan and Zoë say(s) THANKS!
Zoë was going to get out and do something nice for herself, but by the time she got the errands done, she was too tired.
I have demanded that she take Saturday and go visit a friend of ours who has grandpuppies of Bess. That will be a lot of fun. Got to have fun for that heart of hers.
3:26 pm on January 27th, 2011
Dad says we are living in the third world, whatever that means. No heat which is fine. By me but no electricity also so working off battery on iPad just needed to wish Dan and Zoe a Happy Anniversary! Love your friend Wookie
3:41 pm on January 27th, 2011
Wookie!… When I heard about all the snow I thought about you guys…snort!…The thought crossed my mind that you probably did not have any electricity today. Please stay warm, somehow. ….sniffle!
4:02 pm on January 27th, 2011
It’s going to be a one dog night at Wöökie’s house.
I think I have figured out how the new stress reducer software we bought for Zoë works. It takes so much stress to figure it out, when you give up and call the number, and then have to leave a voice mail, you quit for the day. Ergo. . . less stress.
4:03 pm on January 27th, 2011
Wookie, Do you have a generator that keeps the basic things going, or are you doing without?
4:35 pm on January 27th, 2011
Heat!… I think I remember Wookie saying they did have some sort of backup generator or something like that….snort!… Otherwise they will all be popsicles tonight, except for Wookie of course. He has a thick coat of fur to keep him toasty….snorkel!
4:58 pm on January 27th, 2011
Is that country or is it bluegrass?
Magpie, how does a teacher who doesn’t know how to conjugate verbs get a job teaching English?? I think this shouldn’t be left – take it further! And someone give that kid a lamington.
Happy Anniversary DnZ, and I hope B is recovering comfortably.
5:32 pm on January 27th, 2011
It,s popsicle city dfor Mom, Dad And Grandpa tonight. Me, I want the window opened, its still a little warm at :48 degrees. Extra beans might help!
5:56 pm on January 27th, 2011
Stay warm, Wookie and gang. Hope to hear from Bee soon.
They are talking about a possible blizzard here early next week, with whiteout conditions. Yikes!
6:04 pm on January 27th, 2011
Liz, It is country but the Louvin Brothers were influenced by the most famous Bluegrass musician of all time, Bill Monroe.
Thanks for all the Louvin Brother videos, Chet. It is good to hear the honest stuff instead of the crap on today’s country radio.
I’m going to ask mom if I can spend the night with Wookie, but I want you two-leggeds in Wookie’s house to stay warm.
6:37 pm on January 27th, 2011
It’s not looking good for Wookie. They just said on the news that his area has 400,000 homes without power and it might take another day to fix it. We had a bad one in Buffalo in 2006 and had no electricity for 8 days
7:00 pm on January 27th, 2011
Been there, done that Wöökie and MollyPop.
Ice storm did us in 2 years ago. No telephone, no electricity for 3 days. Up the back roads people were without power for 2 weeks.
That’s when we got the generator. We have it so it is wired into some of the circuits in the house.
7:01 pm on January 27th, 2011
Riö, YSAS is going to be fitted for a costume for more Boardwalk Empire. This time he is upper class background. I always knew he’d go up in the world! Snicker.
7:14 pm on January 27th, 2011
Well, it’s the lull time. And I need to sleep. I know it’s only just after 7 pm, but Ros and I heard beeping at 4 this morning. Zoë and I looked all over the house and couldn’t find a thing. Luckily.
We figure it might have been a truck or plow backing up.
Anyhoo . . .
B. STOVER: HOPE YOU’RE OKAY, TIP TOP and RARING TO GO! At least tomorrow or the next day.
7:24 pm on January 27th, 2011
Hi,I’m still in hopital. During procedure lung collapsed so a tube is in my side. Lung is better and news is good-problem was a build up of mucus. This computer is difficult. May be able to go home tomorrow. Will post then.
7:30 pm on January 27th, 2011
Oh, Bee, we are all sending positive vibes and good doggy kisses your way. Be well!
Night, Melanie.
You guys out east, stay safe and warm.
7:37 pm on January 27th, 2011
Oh our dear B. How awful but it looks like removing the buildup of mucus will help.
Just keep resting.
7:38 pm on January 27th, 2011
That’s good news, B. We are all pulling for you.
7:49 pm on January 27th, 2011
Big sigh of relief here…Stover reported in and it sounds like they have found the problem and she is going to be fine…just have to get the collasped lung working right. Thanks for letting us know, Stover. I don’t imagine posting in the hospital was easy. Husky hugs going out to you. Rest and get well.
7:56 pm on January 27th, 2011
Thanks B. Stover for thinking of us and sending us news, especially since it was good news (except for the collapsed-lung part).
8:07 pm on January 27th, 2011
Hi everyone – we are sending happy thoughts and butt wiggles to Bee, hoping that this is the fix for all her difficulties.
Mama just had a nice long chat with Melanie. She is doing so well. Her doctor is really happy with her healing and once she has some physical therapy, she should start real progress with her knee. Mama is really looking forward to going for long walks with her soon!
8:21 pm on January 27th, 2011
Tup ‘n Gill – What happened to the aliens that were living in Melanie’s knee?
8:24 pm on January 27th, 2011
Glad to hear the news about Melanie. I hope Dan and Zoe are also getting better.
8:42 pm on January 27th, 2011
Collapsed! …Sob! That doesn’t sound good to me at all. A collapsed lung is nothing to snort about. Plus she has a TUBE in her side… grunt!…I am worried about our dear Stover…sniff!…She is in the hospital for gosh sakes with a tube in her side, and then there is the possibility that they might lose her!…wheeze!… I’m not feeling that relieved at all right now… snuffle!
Wookie!….Don’t forget we have Wookie’s dear family to worry about!….snort! … Popsicles deluxe tonight…gasp!… Will this winter never END??….sob!…What else can happen to our Plundering family?….grapple!
8:51 pm on January 27th, 2011
Rio – DON’T ASK!!!!
MollyPop – we don’t know for sure, but there were strange lights in the sky and a weird sound. Then there were all these freak snowstorms, and power outages. Maybe it was all the aliens gong home…..As long as they are GONE!
Snuggle up Wookie – sending warm thoughts
8:57 pm on January 27th, 2011
Yikes!
B.Stover: Thank you for letting us know you are okay. Sorry to hear your lung collapsed and you have to have that tube put in…but glad you are getting rid of all that nasty fluid.
Happy Anniversary to Zoe and Dan…60 years is a big milestone. If I live to be 101 I could make it to a 60th anniversary. I won’t hold my breath! 🙂
Siber H: Are you taking some kind of memory medication or doing brain exercises or something? You remembered!!!
Wookie: Hope your mom, dad and grandpa stay warm tonight. Get out all the extra blankets.
Melanie: Glad your YSAS has joined the upper classes. Tell him not to forget his roots! Looking forward to hearing about your long walks with T&G’s mom.
Spence: I’d never heard of the Louvin brothers, but enjoyed starting the day with that video/audio.
9:12 pm on January 27th, 2011
Ok, I’ll confess…I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget. Sixty years should be remembered.
9:13 pm on January 27th, 2011
Melanie!… I was so worried about Stover that I over-looked some good news!….Woooo!…Clarkson is going to be on an Emmy Award winning show AGAIN!…snort!… Oh, my wish is for him to be noticed and given a much bigger part with Steve Buscemi himself…heh!…Oh dear Lord, please make it so for Clarkson…snuffle!
9:16 pm on January 27th, 2011
Wait!… Was it the Golden Globe winning show?….snort!…I’m getting all my awards mixed up now…chorkel!…I think Buscemi just won a Golden Globe for that show…heh!…Whatever it is Clarkson will be on it!…gruff!
9:17 pm on January 27th, 2011
SiberH!…Writing down stuff is 95% of remembering things…heh!
9:32 pm on January 27th, 2011
Siber H: Yes, I agree with Rio and I had it written down too…somewhere…
9:39 pm on January 27th, 2011
Siber H: The all-important 5% is remembering to look where you wrote it down at the correct time.
Rio: When they put that tube in, the lung inflates. Plus then the fluid can drain. Our B.Stover is gonna be fine. Meanwhile, the teacher is away she ain’t gonna be correcting any grammar errors. So relax. End your sentences with a preposition if you want to.
9:53 pm on January 27th, 2011
Dawson!….I know I should feel grammatically relaxed right now, but I just can’t relax until she is back…sniffle!… We need her. Our writing skills might fall apart without her…gruffle!… I just hope she is not in any pain and resting peacefully right now… sniff!
9:56 pm on January 27th, 2011
Yup,
I too write things down to remember them and then put them someplace ‘safe’ which I immediately forget.
Happy 60th to Zoe and the Raven. I am so glad you made it.
And Melanie, I wasn’t doing much walking after my transplant so now that I am working at my busy place my legs have cramps every g.d. night. However I know that it is much better for me to be moving so I just suck it up.
You should see me leap out of bed so I can put my foot down hard on the floor to relieve the cramp. You would be surprised how fast I can move with that motivation.
Dear BStover,

Alice wants to send you beautiful thoughts for a restful and good sleeping night. So she told me to put this picture up. We are rooting for no more mucus and a fat and sassy lung.
9:58 pm on January 27th, 2011
We have power again. Just took that crummy PEPCO 24 hours to do it. I actually thought the temperature in the house was just fine, but mom, dad and grandpa seemed real happy to have heat and light back on.
Our warm thoughts are with Stover tonight. It’s good that the problem is a mucous buildup, but the collapsed lung is not good. Hopefully she will be able to escape tomorrow, you know what they say — hospitals are not good places for people who are not feeling well. Wookie
9:59 pm on January 27th, 2011
Oooh B – no wonder you weren’t well. Glad they’ve found the problem.
10:09 pm on January 27th, 2011
Staff, if you are having leg cramps at night, I want you to do something for me…I want you to google “leg cramps” or “cures for nighttime leg cramps” or something similar. Or, go the peoplespharmacy.com and put leg cramps in their search bar. Relief may be found in a simple bar of unwrapped Ivory soap that you sleep with at night. I hope so because leg cramps hurt like hell. This sounds nuts but it has worked for countless people. No one knows why it works.
Hi Alice
10:14 pm on January 27th, 2011
Staff – A great solution for leg cramps is tonic water. Can you have it? Mom gets the diet kind and when she gets a cramp, gets it out of the fridge and takes a couple of drinks. It works sublingualy (under the tongue) and works quickly. If she’s having a bad night, she keeps it next to the bed.
10:15 pm on January 27th, 2011
B, try to rest. It’s not easy to get a good nights sleep in a hospital. They keep coming in and waking you up to test this and that. Hope you get to come home tomorrow.
Happy Anniversary, Dan & Zoe! And we thought Mom & Dad had been married a long time (almost 37 years).
Everybody, stay warm and well.
G&BB
10:15 pm on January 27th, 2011
Staff- have you tried having a glass of tonic water before bed? Kind of an old wives tale type of leg cramp healer, but we know people who swear by it and don’t suffer anymore. What could it hurt to try.
Wookie – very glad to hear that you will be warm tonight, but sorry that maybe you lost your chance to sleep on the bed with your people. Thats what Mama lets us do when the power is out – Gilly is trying to learn how to flip the circuit breaker off on the furnace….
10:16 pm on January 27th, 2011
MollyPop – ain’t we all too smart!
10:18 pm on January 27th, 2011
Oh good!
Wookie’s house can warm up again.
Rio: My grammar has already fell apart…plus I am throwing spitballs around and dipping the cat’s tails into inkwells. You are right. We do need Stover. And in a hurry. Please Stover, get well soon. Know who else has a collapsed lung tonight? Nelson Mandela.
Mollypop and Tupper & Gilly: Tonic water for cramps? I’ll remember that.
10:20 pm on January 27th, 2011
I am going to drink some right now. My Dad has some stashed in the fridge. I know he has suffered from leg cramps. I wonder if that is why he has it.
Hey there Dawson. I noticed it is lighter at night now. It doesn’t get completely dark till 6 pm. How is it doing up there?
10:22 pm on January 27th, 2011
The tonic water only worked a short time for mom, but the unwrapped bar of Ivory soap works like magic.
10:24 pm on January 27th, 2011
2 posts for tonic water one minute apart. Great minds!
Glad Wookie’s heat is back on and hope Bee has a good night. Hurry home, Bee!
Hugs to all, good night.
10:28 pm on January 27th, 2011
Alice!…That is my favorite photo of Alice because she looks like the femme fatale that she really is…heh!
Heat!…Buck up Wookie. They will probably blast the furnace just in case the power goes out again…heh!…Then they will be all toasty and you will be extremely hot….snort!…When I sleep on the big bed she is constantly pulling the covers on then throwing the covers off…grump!…So I am hot then I’m cold – plus she kicks-gah!… shiver!…I like being relegated to my warm soft bed on the floor way better these days where I am just right…chorkel!
10:32 pm on January 27th, 2011
Staff: Today we had 1 hour and 33 minutes more daylight than we had on December 21st. But we also had about 6 inches of snow and high wind.
10:33 pm on January 27th, 2011
Tonic!…The only time I have seen her drink tonic water is with a big dollop of gin!…heh…And a nice slice of lemon…snort!…Come to think of it, on those nights she doesn’t kick at all…heh!
10:34 pm on January 27th, 2011
Snort!
Rio: That’s funny. See? It works.
Siber H: Huh? An unwrapped bar of Ivory soap?
10:43 pm on January 27th, 2011
LizF: My co-worker is back from Australia and really enjoyed herself. Her son is at Griffith’s University at the Gold Coast. She said the people were really friendly, she never had a bad meal and she walked all over the place (which she loves). She did see some of the devastation of the floods and went to a benefit to help the victims while she was there. The only bad thing she said was that the food was expensive.
10:43 pm on January 27th, 2011
Soap!… I was wondering about the unwrapped bar of soap myself…snort!…What gives Siberh? (hopefully he wrote it down)….grunt!
10:45 pm on January 27th, 2011
what’s with the soap? Can I use the fancy bars shaped like a leaf that Dawson liberated from the fancy hotel that charged 5.95 for 15 minutes of internet?
No capitals there. heh good thing BStover is away. the kats kan play.
10:51 pm on January 27th, 2011
We have heard of the soap too – just put an unwrapped bar of ivory at the foot of your bed – don’t have any idea why it works, maybe something eminates from the bar?? But it does work.
10:51 pm on January 27th, 2011
PS: Dawson you are becoming your funny self again!…heh!…Dunking Kats tails in the inkwell…snort! …Priceless!
10:52 pm on January 27th, 2011
Oh!…Lord, I double dipped with Tupper and company!…shiver!
10:55 pm on January 27th, 2011
I googled the Ivory soap thing and there are all kinds of sites that say this works…Dove soap too…stolen soap from hotels… not so much.
Good Night All.
Macy MinPin: Your mom is in my thoughts. Please give her some hugs.
10:57 pm on January 27th, 2011
I posted a more detailed explanation above, but it is being moderated. I’ll try again…people put an unwrapped bar of Ivory soap underneath the bottom sheet where their legs are when they sleep. Or, you can just toss the bar of soap in bed with you in the general area of your legs. No one knows why it works to stop leg cramps, but it does. There are statements all over the internet from people that this has worked for.
It works beautifully for my mom. You need to replace the bar of soap about once a month with a fresh one. Mom is one of those who just sleeps with the soap near her legs, not underneath the sheet. This is a cure that there is absolutely no harm in trying.
10:59 pm on January 27th, 2011
Staff, You can’t use fancy bars of soap…must be Ivory, or I have heard of people using Dove.
11:00 pm on January 27th, 2011
Rio: I don’t like to say it but…you have to be kinda old to get that joke.
11:03 pm on January 27th, 2011
And, by the way, mom says you feel totally nuts sleeping with a bar of soap, but it is better than leg cramps anyday.
11:04 pm on January 27th, 2011
Dawson!…Which joke are you referring to…heh!… And I am old as far as dogs go…snort!
11:07 pm on January 27th, 2011
Dipping!…If you are referring to the Double Dipping, I only meant it in regard to the same time that we posted…snort!….Nothing weird and wacky…grunt!…Although posting at the same time does still freak me out….yeep!
11:08 pm on January 27th, 2011
The cat tails into the ink wells joke…dating back to when the desks had inkwells which is surely before your time. And also, the dipping wasn’t very satisfactory as the cats tails are as black as the ink. I didn’t think it out beforehand…now really…I’m hitting the sack.
11:15 pm on January 27th, 2011
We have some Ivory Dish-washing Liquid. No bar soap.
We are for bed too. Have to buy soap tomorrow.
goodnight all. except her, down under who is in tomorrow already.
11:21 pm on January 27th, 2011
Good Night All
We are thinking of Macy’s mom and hope she is feeling better.
Stover, thinking of you also and hope you get to go home tomorrow.
11:29 pm on January 27th, 2011
Sleep!…We should go to sleep, but she is a night owl like her grandma…heh…Mornings are the worst because she does have to get up early and then there is the long commute on the dreaded highway…grunt!… Life sort of sucks right now, we need to change some stuff real soon…grump!
11:50 pm on January 27th, 2011
Bed!…Well, there is no tennis tonight to keep us up, so we are off to our respective beds…heh!…My warm soft bed with all my baseball toys is calling to me…snort!… I hope Wookie and his family are warm, safe and sound, Stover is sleeping peacefully, Melanie’s knee is healing, Dan is getting stronger, Zoe is calm and relaxed, MinPin’s mom is looking to the future, anyone with leg cramps are sleeping with a bar of soap. If I have forgotten anyone, I am sorry!…Goodnight all!…Sleep tight! ….snorkel!
11:59 pm on January 27th, 2011
Hey y’all! I’m just stopping in real quick on my way to bed. Mom went to Dad’s basketball game tonight, then out to dinner with some friends, then to a play! One of the girls from her church — who was in Mom’s Christmas play — played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. She did very well, so now everyone figures we’ll be able to say, “I knew her when!” Maybe someday she’ll be up on stage with YSAS!
Anyway, Happy Anniversary to Dan and Zoe! Get well soon to Bee! And to Staff: Grandma swears by the soap in bed thing to stop her leg cramps.
