The author of Navajos Wear Nikes talked a lot about Rez dogs. The animal control guys would drive around and pick them up, and they were always put down. Even if the dog had tags it didn’t matter. He and his family rescued several Rez dogs, rehoming some of them. They have mange, fleas and a number of diseases. It is a huge problem out there.

B: Liebfraumilch is one of the few white wines we like also. Same as you, red wine is preferred in this household.

I read the article because dog people in the southwest are already aware of this and have been for years. It is a very sad story. I am surprised the Farmington newspaper even printed an article about it. This is not a new problem and there is no hope in the foreseeable future of conditions on the Rez improving for the dogs
Many of the Navajo are living in poverty. Unemployment is high on the Rez. There is even a charity that raises money to buy them wood stoves to heat their homes. Some of them have to haul water miles to their homes to use for drinking and cooking. Their sheep come before their dogs because the sheep are useful to them. There are also, of course, cultural differences between us and them.
I don’t like the living conditions for the dogs on the Rez but no one has yet come up with a solution except to save the few here and there.
We know a lady that taught school on the Rez for a few years, and rescued 3 of the dogs. They are living with her here now and come to my dog park sometimes.

BSD, Two of Barb’s three kids are traveling this week, so Shannon, her daughter that is not married, is coming out from the city. Then they are going over to Kathy’s home in Woodstock for dinner. Kathy is DIL Jessica’s mom. Her unmarried daughter is also going to be there and maybe 1 or 2 other orphans are stopping by. Should be fun as long as they discuss Chet and Bernie (Kathy is a recent fan) and stay away from politics. Barb and Kathy are sharing the meal cost, which they are buying ready made. What are your plans?
Barb had an unusual request from Baye and Lily for a Christmas gift – a duck caller. Seems that they are obsessed with Duck Dynasty on A & E. Has anyone watched it? We turned it on for about a minute.

Siber, We also read a very sad story about the Rez. During the depression Comm. of Indian Affairs John Collier thought a Livestock Reduction Act would help because he thought there were too many sheep and goats on the Rez. They sent police out who shot and burned the goats and sheep by the thousands, while the Navajo stood by helplessly and watched. They treated these animals like pets and valued them like our dogs and cats. Their ecoonomy spiraled down after this and it was truly a tragic event. Stupidity on Collier’s part.

Mr.Staff and I are back from doing the final (HA!) shopping for Thanksgiving. I am feeling sorry for myself that no sister’s are here to share the fun. The Turtleman is helping but he just turns up with the (this year) smashed potatoes. It is not like having your sister(s) in the room talking and laughing and working together.
Mr.Staff will make his Key Lime Pie too. But it is not the same.

A favorite white wine here is Traminette, which is from a daughter vine of Gewurtztraminer. Aptly named, I think. It was developed at Cornell Univ. and is available in many wineries in the Finger Lakes.

Liebfraumilch (translates to lady or mother’s love milk) is semi-sweet and non-fizzy. I’m not as familiar with Gewurztraminer (gewurz means spice and traminer is the grape name) but I believe that it is sweet and fizzy. I’m not familiar with Traminette but will try to find it.

Rio: you should convince your friend that the 2 of you need to travel and see relatives during Thanksgiving next year. So far I have 4 invitations to Thanksgiving dinner. If I had planned things better, I could have been eating all day and into the night. Ironically, my travel agent has me leaving to fly home Friday at 10:00 am (3 hour drive away). So I have figured out that I have to drive to the airport on Thanksgiving afternoon which will cut into my eating severely. The reason I have to drive to the airport on Thursday is that I don’t want to get up before the crack of dawn on Friday. And I don’t want to drive in darkness because of my eye surgery so I have to drive during daylight hours on Thursday. I hope I can snag at least one meal around 1:00 before having to leave.

Mama has just done herself in. She and Dad did Costco and the grocery store, and both places were packed tighter than Rio’s baseball toys. At Costco, they had all the “demo ladies” out doing food samples, and Mama says that there were people who had obviously never, ever had food before and never expected to have any again just pouncing on those samples.
One lady was handing out samples of I Cant Beleive its Not Butter on crackers, and people were just mobbing her stand. Really? For a bite of fake butter?
We won’t even tell you what was happening at the “lobster spread on a cracker” stand. And humans make fun of the way DOGS eat!
So, anyway, we are saying goodnight, and we are so happy to hear all this wonderful news about the checkpoints. Now we are just waiting impatiently for the marvelous boutique and auction.

T&G, my girl has done those free samples and demos when she works at Wegmans. She’s still at school now so no mob scenes. There was a funny time last year when she whose family makes Wardynski sausages was doing a demo on the same product.
