Review: The King’s Speech

“What did you think of it?” says Admin.

“Great,” says Spence.

“Spot those Corgis playing with the princesses?”

“Yup.”

“They were brought into the family by George VI – played by Colin Firth, who was superb – in 1933 when he was still Duke of York and not expecting to ever be king. He bought a Corgi called Dookie, and then came Jane who had puppies, two of which, Crackers and Carol, were kept.”

“What did you think of the part where he’s watching a clip of Hitler speaking?”

“Perfect. Hitler was an electrifying public speaker, a true demagogue, one of those who sucks in the energy of the crowd and ramps it up and up in crazy spiral. It was his only thing, really. All the rest was sick or incompetent. And why did Blondi have to die? Tell me that.”

“Have we wandered a bit off topic?” says Spence.

You tell me. All I know is that they came back from the movie last night reeking of buttered popcorn. I can still smell it.

Best wishes to B. for a quick recovery.

Thank you Spence, Admin, Chet and Bernie. Your best wishes really helps.

B, we want you all well and ready to take on you-know-who with Melanie’s cane. We still have the refresh problem and it’s even worse when we’re on the dark side. Rest and feel better.

We agree with you Bee, that movie is on our list. Hope you get lots of rest today, that’s important.

We want your opinion of something we saw on the evening news. Mark Twain’s Huck Finn has been rewritten with over 200 deletions of the offensive n—word removed. The word was replaced with the word “slave”. What is your opinion on that?

Barb hates the word, and would never use it, but does it change Twain’s writing by eliminating it? It was a commonly used word at the time, so can it be read with that understanding? There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding this issue.

Duke!… Is this the movie where someone is hired to teach Duke George VI how to speak properly because he stutters and has to give an important speech once he becomes King? ….grunt!….This is all I gathered from a commercial on night…sniff!….Colin Firth is a wonderful actor and is welcome at my house anytime…..snort!

A-Kat and AJ – The New York Times has an article for cats playing games on an iPad. Make sure Staff gets you one.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/technology/personaltech/06smart.html

The Game for Cats will let you, the Kat, upgrade to the next level for $1. One of the apps developers said “We thibk it’s a first in competitive video gaming for animals.”

As Siber-H would say – you have to take turns.

Sam and B&M: Thank you a lot.

Regarding the Huck Finn controversy: Teaching the novel or any work with the n word is embarrassing for the students especially when we are reading outloud. I don’t like the word either. However, I don’t think the original should be changed. To me it would almost be similar to repainting the lips on the Mona Lisa.

Have you ever noticed that movie buttered popcorn smells nothing like real buttered popcorn?

Mom wants to see that movie, I don’t, except for the corgis. Fat chance of me ever getting any movie buttered popcorn. Mom says it is full of chemicals. How would she know.

Why did Blondi have to die? Some program on the History channel said that Hitler didn’t want her to fall into the hands of the enemy. I don’t know what to believe, but that is what they said. Mom says I can’t believe everything that I see on tv.

thinking good thoughts for Melanie and B. It is no fun being tested. I prefer the actual operations to the testing. Good luck guys.

They’re right, the King’s Speech is a great film. I saw a few movies over the holidays, that was the best, also Fair Game was terrific.

    Hi Rose.

Hey Tyb, how are you today?

That’s true about the popcorn, Melanie, and the same when you pass a Subway store, they pump out some perfume which smells great and makes you want to eat but it isn’t actually the food smell. Places that sell waffle cone ice creams do it too, they waft out vanilla!

LizE – thanks for asking about mom. She has been having “sitting pneumonia” today, but she is feeling better and will walk right into The Big Orange Box at 6 am tomorrow. She says that she is the least sick of her department..One full-blown pneumonia, one strep-throat, and 2 undiagnosed ailments, plus mom, all from a five person department. They have to take turns calling in sick so that someone is actually working everyday.

Jeez, let’s remember C.Harris advice of breathing in the cold air a few time. But now, instead of excusing just B. Stover, we must excuse Macy’s mom and entire department.

We finished the last of A Touch of Frost. A good show. For the last episode they had three or four endings and NO ONE (not even the actors) knew which one would be used. Pretty cool.

Zoë went to visit Dan to learn how to walk with him (and the walker) and got his iPad working again. We think their wifi went off and then trying to explain to Dad over the phone how to get back on was too confusing.

Russians! I would like to disparage those Russians for being drunk but then I remember the Canadian Womens’ Olympic Team and how they behaved after winning gold. They were found drinking Canadian beer and smoking cigars while lolling around on the ice. However, I don’t know that they were actually drunk and at least they were of age.

    LizF,
Thanks for asking how I’m doing. I’m doing so well that we haven’t been home to use the computer since early this afternoon. We’re having a lot of snow which I love, and I was able to do my long walk (about two miles) this afternoon. Then we came in so that I could have my dinner and meds (antibiotics for my wounds) before we went to my CGC class. That was a riot. We had a two week hiatus because of the holidays, and most of my classmates were just like the kids back in school after vacation. It took us a long time to settle in. Eventually we made it through most of our routines and I’m looking forward to class next week. I feel great and am thinking about wearing some stockings to hide my wounded legs. They look terrible but they don’t hurt any more.

I am sorry to hear that Macy’s Mom is going to work. As a person who is trying very hard to keep away from sick people I hope no one who is sick decides to come into my work this winter. I know that is unreasonable of me, but when your immune system is weak you get sort of grouchy about things like that.

And yes, I am taking anti-bacterial wipes and my anti-bacterial masks and antiseptic handrub (the real stuff not that Purell crap. Oops. I wonder if I am going to be moderated for saying c r a p?

Think Monk (the character, not the religious)

    Melanie out.

    Macy’s mom here;

I do not really relish going to work, but like Macy said, we have to take turns being sick, and tomorrow is not my day. We are the ones who make sure that your deliveries, special orders and installations go as planned. People don’t like hearing that there is no one to help them. Lucky for the people in my vicinity, well, there aren’t very many of them at 6 am. Co-workers don’t come around too much because they can hear us coughing across the store.

Greetings to all of you. We are Melanie’s lurking friends, the outrageously Cute Corgis (one of whom had the hurt toe and the baby socks).
We have been enjoying all your comments, but there is one thing that you have all made a mistake on. The movie is most certainly not about some silly king – it is about Royal Corgis, and therefore should win all Academy, People’s Choice and Golden Globe awards. Really. Its about time someone realized that a movie about Corgis would be important. Lassie who? After all, what has she done lately?

It is something they used at the hospital when I was getting the transplant. It is called Alcare Plus and is a surgical scrub and personal handwash. It is not available retail. You have to buy it from the manufacturer (Steris Corporation) in case lots of 24 nine oz. containers. http://www.steris.com is where staff got hers.
It only ended up being around $4 a bottle. So far I have used up about 5 of them although my Mom really likes it.
Dawson hates the smell, which is like alcohol.
I also just recently bought the wall mounting holders so my Mom doesn’t waste it all by not using it vertically upside down. (She likes to squirt it out sideways)

Hi Siber – thats because you have good taste. The only other movie that had a Corgi was a (poor) version of one of Rita Mae Brown’s books with Tucker Tee…but they made him a BOY dog! How ridiculous – if anyone is going to figure out a murderer and then have the courage to bite them, its going to be a GIRL Corgi. Even is she does have to be assisted by a smart alec cat.

We thought everyone knew that story. It seems that when the world was new, all the dogs wanted to be big and tall and run everything. But then the wise and wonderful First Corgi realized that while all the big dogs were messing around with matters above the knee, no one was making sure that things at ground level were under control. After all, if you have shaky ground, it doesn’t matter how tall you are. So First Corgi just stomped and stomped her feet until her legs were short. So from that day on from the ankle down, Corgis (and some Pugs) now rule the world.

Hey y’all! Just a quick note tonight because Mom’s getting ready to turn off the computer. I thought I’d have a chance to write tomorrow because it’s Mom’s day off, but it turns out she’ll be gone all day. After my boy wrecked his car, he and Dad went shopping and shopping and shopping to find a cheap used car (just what the insurance money would cover since my boy still doesn’t have a job), and they finally found one in Charlotte, North Carolina. Then they took it to a mechanic here and he found lots of things wrong with it — it was going to be more than he paid for it! My boy bought it “as is” — no warranty — so we thought he was SOL! Luckily the place he bought it from said if he brings it back they’ll fix it, and just charge for parts and not labor. Phew! But that means Mom has to drive him back to North Carolina and hang around all day shopping, lunching and maybe seeing a movie, until the car is fixed. Then tomorrow night, Dad has a basketball game in Charlotte, so Mom’s going to stay for that. So it’ll be a late night until I get on the computer again, or maybe not at all:( So — just in case — see you Saturday!

Welcome to Rose and Tupper and Gilly! And my best to all you sickies out there!!!

    Dawson,
Yes, that is a Canine Good Citizenship course I’m taking. That will end in two weeks, and then I’ll start Therapy Dog Training. I go to schools and nursing homes now, but
a therapy dog certificate will be good to have. I really like it when the kids read to me.
They’d rather read to me than to a person because they know I won’t laugh or make fun of them if they make a mistake, and they are afraid a person would. It helps build their confidence if I just lie still and listen.
Thanks, again, to all of you who expressed concern after my attack. I’m sure your good thoughts and positive energy hastened my healing. I feel great, but I still look like hell with my shaved legs and scabs.
