Refreshed

Does riding in the car ever put you to sleep? That happens to me sometimes, like after we left Max’s Memphis Ribs, for example. When I woke up we were in a bad part of Pedroia, which is about as bad as it gets in the Valley. I sat up in the shotgun seat, had a big yawn.

“Have a nice nap, big guy?” Bernie said. He gave me a pat. I turned my head a bit, hoping to give him the idea of scratching me between the ears. And it worked! Is Bernie the best or what?

I noticed the old dusty van up ahead. It turned into an unpaved alley and we followed. There were tall warehouses with loading docks on both sides. And not a human in sight. I did spot a rat in the shadows. Don’t like rats, not one little bit.

Spencer Quinn will be at Porter Square Books, 25 White Street,  Cambridge MA 02140 tonight at 7.

Careful– I hope they don't see you following them if it's that deserted.

Just listened to Dog On It on CD, during a long vacation drive with my 13-year-old son. We both loved it, particularly the "Chet" perspective on the world: how he lives in the present (mostly), occasionally finds himself having done something without having thought about it or even noticed himself doing it, totally into his partnership with Bernie — can't wait for Thereby Hangs, gotta find out what happens with Suzie Sanchez too… keep them coming!
