Rebecca’s Iditarod “Report”
Below is a conversation that may or may not have happened between Admin and me:
“No post today,” I told him.
Admin blinked. He stared. He blinked again.
“Am I allowed to have a ‘No Post Today’ day?”
“Reason?”
“It’s twofold. Pick the one you like best.”
“Shoot.”
“One. Wednesday is a travel day and I have a lot to do between now and when I leave for Nome. “
He raised his eyebrows. Unlike Rio, the sled dog not the evil pug, I bet Admin always knows the whereabouts of his eyebrows.
“Two. I stayed up into the wee hours watching the damn flag move across the sea ice from Shaktoolik to Koyuk. It’s a notorious section of trail.”
“Notorious?”
“Don’t believe me? Here is a link to a video made by our very own Melanie about Team Snowhook’s time on the sea ice in 2012.”

By the time of this report, Team Snowhook is off the sea ice and resting in Koyuk. From there it is a handful of checkpoints until the burled arch in Nome.

Did youse know that Wade Marrs entire team is female? I think they should win too.
Never a dull moment around here. Mom just matched a found Siberian Husky up with her frantic owner who was looking for her. A guy stopped by here to see if the dog he found was one of us. Of course, it was not. Mom got all of his information, and posted it on FB. When she went to one of the Lost Dogs of our Area pages, lo and behold! There was the lost dog posted by her owner. She lives very close to where the guy lives who stopped by, so it was a no-brainer. The girl Sibe is blind and diabetic. She listed our v-e-t as one of her contact places, so Mom called them, and now everyone is reunited and happy! Mom says Facebook is magic for this stuff. We here are relieved

Back you hounds…back. Your mom wants to see the puppies! I haven’t see such new ones since winter 1955 when the “cute little boy cocker spaniel” Mama brought home from the pound gave birth during dinner to 10 little cocker mixes. (Okay, my mother was a naieve ditz!) Good thing my folks insisted that I have doll crud or those little puppies would have starved! I’ve been a dog fool ever since!

The tracker listing still shows Jim Lanier, who scratched hours ago as “resting” and all the others from Koyuk (except Charlie and AJ) have long since hit the trail.

I watched Melanie’s video of Snowhook from this morning’s link. It gets better every time I watch it. It’s amazing the amount of talent that woman had.
The more I think about it, I really think that AJ rescued Charlie Benja last night out on the sea ice. Benja was stopped for over 2 hours with no one passing near him then Justin came by. Within minutes, both teams were moving and hours later they came into Koyuk with a minute of each other.

We thank you for giving to the world the gift of our animal companions who make our lives better.
We lift our prayers to you for AJ and his loyal team. We ask you to watch over them, as we wait for word of their progress. Creator, we know you will hold them safely, and we ask you to lift them and carry them over the last miles of their journey. He is Not Cold for He Has Good Dogs, and he cares for them just as they take care of him. Please ease any sore muscles, soothe tired legs, warm cold ears, and bring the dogs home where they will always be loved and cared for.
Creator – we have joy in each new day with the animals that look to us. They give us love, free of condition, unknowing of jealousy, without limit or judgement. We ask that we be worthy of all we are given by these gentle hearts, and return to them the same devotion and care.
We ask that the spirits run with AJ as he heads toward the finish line. Let the Buffalo Spirit imbue them with endurance. Let the Salmon Spirit inspire them to finish their journey. Let the Raven Spirit lift them with his wings and carry them through the night.
Creator – we also ask for prayers for our Rebecca. Hold her gently, sooth her worries, lift her heart with the joy she will have in welcoming home her family. Amen. And thanks for sending up another one for us. I might have found something that gets her attention, at least some of the time. Yeah…it’s the stuffed frog that croaks. Leno has several of the quacking ducks, which he loves, so I got the frog a while ago. Of course, he wants it, too. I wonder how long it will be before Miss Hilda wants to disembowel it? But for now, she’s pretty fascinated by it.
Looking forward to a safe finish for the team. That AJ stopped to help a guy in trouble speaks volumes, but I reckon everyone already knew what kind of guy he is.

Rio: Charley Benja was Stopped on the ice for 2 Hours last night. AJ stopped and they crossed the ice together all the way to Youse’s Checkpoint.
Dawson thinks Our Giant Rescued him. Considering that the other musher is still in Koyuk we think she is right.

I agree with BSD that AJ waited so as not to leave in the heat of the day when it is too hot for the dogs and the snow is heavy and slushy. Also, the dogs had a hard 8.5 hour run last evening across the sea ice. Not to mention who knows what else is happening out there in the wilds! Like I hope the team did not “catch a bug”. Anyways, they are running fine now.
AJ is running from Koyuk, sponsored by Rio, Beau and their Friend, to Elim which was sponsored by SiberH. SiberH is out there on the trail having a blast.
