Reading Material

“Been to North Conway before?” Admin says.

“For skiing,” Spence says.

“Not for the discount malls?”

“Ha ha.”

“Picked anything to read at the event tomorrow?”

“Not sure there is a reading, actually,” Spence says. “Might be just a talk. But if reading happens, I think I’ll do the scene where Chet goes inside Iggy’s house for the first time.”

Admin thinks for a moment, and then nods.

Tomorrow at noon: Spencer Quinn, Maestro’s Restaurant, North Conway NH.

Welcome Breezey and Toothy Dude.

Melanie – That picture of YSAS shows what a great actor he is – just the way he’s standing there. His pose, his stance, his persona!

Melanie, It’s just you and me, kid. I assume you took the picture? Great capture of his persona.

I’m not familiar with North Conway but I assume there are no discount malls? I’m sure you’ll have a great turn Spence. Wish I could go.

    Good morning all.

There are discount malls. Perhaps Spencer does not shop.

Thanks for the kudos on the picture. It’s hard not to take a good picture of actors. Though the crazy one (very funny) they wouldn’t let me put up.

VERY humid today. 97% and 70 degrees. Might get some storms but not until later. I know a front is coming through from the west and that TS remnant is pumping humidity from the south, and who knows about the Hurricane.

Interesting weather. I would like to deliver gentle rainfall to Texas.

Oh yes, I hadn’t thought about that other jacket! This one was given to YSAS quite a few years ago. Needs cleaning (as does everything in that closet).

Melanie, thanks for the rain thoughts…some day maybe. Yesterday was horrible, fire popping up just everywhere. Seems like the little water we do have left is going to fight the fires. On the news last night they showed where people’s pools were pulling away from the ground. (or the other way around). But the good news, much cooler the rest of the week. That does nothing to help the fire situation, but mentally it feels great. Mom may actually finish dumping the bags of mulch that have been laying in the yard since June.

Sorry to rub it in, Spence, but, heh heh, how ’bout them Rangers!

Hi everyone. It’s been a busy couple of days here, so I haven’t had much of a chance to post and get caught up. Most important though, mom asked me to thank everyone for all of the wonderful birthday wishes that everyone sent her on the third. She was really, really touched.
It’s been kind of hot and steamy the last couple of days here, but without much precipitation. Today though it does seem likely that we will get some thunderstorms later. I know how much they upset my mom so I will just have to hang extra close to keep her calm. Wookie

I don’t know where North Conway is, but the part in the book about Iggy sounds enticing. Have always wondered about that little guy.

Reading about Wolfie’s adventures in tomato canning. What a glutton for punishment – going back for more! Even if not for canning – how can you even bear to look at another tomato for the season! Wonder if there will even be any left at that place?

Is it really the last day of the Labor Day Weekend? This will probably be the coolest day of the week – about 80 – nice!

    Time for breakfast.

    Good Morning to All:

I hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend so far.

Macy, your ears are gorgeous dahling. NO snipping!!! And I’m glad you are not a Sox fan. The Yankees are now back in first place.

Bear: I’m curious about Iggy too.

I loved the picture, Melanie. The black and white shot is very film-noir.

Rio: I’m glad your friend’s project was framed successfully. I hope we get the chance to see a photo.

    Bear,

Yes, indeed, the spaghetti sauce thing may not happen. Mom tends to get lots of great ideas that never quite materialize. You should see her sewing room, for example! There just never seems to be enough time.

The crazy lady at the farmers market canned 1200 jars of produce last year. Not to sell, but to give away to family. Yikes!

I know Spence doesn’t describe Iggy this way, but I picture a little scruffy, wiry Jack Russell type, white and tan, with a wiry face and a beard. Also very jumpy/ bouncy.

Good morning, y’all! Mom says she hasn’t read any scene where Chet goes into Iggy’s house, so it must be pretty far into the book. It’s not in the part that Mom would have already read if, of course, she was sneaking a peek at the book, which, of course, she isn’t!

We’re having kind of a lazy morning today. My girl was pretty tired from her weekend — she went back to her college to work at the restaurant where she used to work because they needed extra help because of the football game. She works long hours during those games, so Mom decided to keep quiet and stay in bed reading until my girl woke up. (Not The Book, unfortunately!) Oh, she says that makes her sound too lazy. She did get up and walk a few miles with Dad, then she came home and crawled back into bed to read. So she’s not really lazy, just taking advantage of a day off!

    Happy Labor Day, y’all!!!

Melanie, we second the request for the crazy picture, unless it would embarass him.

I remember that Iggy has jowls. Not sure I why I remember that but hey . . . possibly because there are so many around here.

Just talked to YSAS . . . snickering. That guy! Hamlet dropped him off in Manhattan around 12:30pm. He went upstairs, talked to one of his roommates and went to bed. Now being the Polite Boy Guy that he is, when he goes to the “necessary” he uses a flashlight so as not to turn on every light in the apartment. Hmmm. Did I mention his room is right next to the fire escape?

A few minutes after he returned to his slumber, he was awakened by voices in the apartment. Thinking nothing of it, his roommates tend to come in late with friends, and they were keeping their voices down, YSAS started doze off again. He then heard his roommate say, “What are you DOING here?”

He went out to help confront whomever it was (he is the enforcer in the apartment) and found 8 COPS in the living room!

The cops separated them and then asked them for ID, asked if they were okay. YSAS told them they were freaking him out, what was up? Then he was asked if anyone was forcing him to say things. . .

Turns out a new neighbor across the street (getting pretty ritzy people in the hood now) had seen his flashlight, had thought someone had crawled up the fire escape and was burgling the apartment. YSAS showed them his flashlight, his room and said no one was in the apartment forcing them to say anything.

They left. YSAS didn’t get asleep for awhile after that! Now the Cops got in because it’s hot on the fourth floor of a really old building without AC and they leave the door open. They felt safe doing that because the outside door is always locked.

    Might have to rethink that!

  16. Melanie
    10:54 am on September 5th, 2011

About the crazy picture . . . if I had just promised YSAS it would be up in a minute, but I promised Hamlet. So unless it gets put up on Facebook by someone else, and I would take that as inferred permission, I’m sorry.

  17. Kirby T. Penworthy
    10:59 am on September 5th, 2011

Melanie: Sounds like a crazy night in YSAS’s life — then again, it sounds like his life is pretty crazy 24/7! Then again, at least he knows he has neighbors who aren’t don’t-want-to-get-involved types!!!

The scene where Chet goes into Iggy’s house is an excellent choice!!

Melanie, That is a funny story and a great picture of the Acting Crew. I think YSAS should come to NM and film a western.

Our high temperatures this week will be in the high eighties instead of the high nineties. We are sharing the cool front with Macy. Thank Dog.

Happy Labor Day! Mom just got home from being in a parade. We have never been to a parade but they sound like fun. Candy was tossed to children, and signs were put up. And the best part was that the rain didn’t start until Mom was on her way home from the parade. We have way too much rain here lately; we really wish we could send it down to Macy.
Melanie, great story about the cops breaking into YSAS’ apartment.

Dog, everyone is busy doing things on and for Labor Day.

    I think Riö’s friend needs a walking song . . . from Riö (snickering)

    When I wake up…
Yea, I know I’m going to be, I’m going to be that dog who wakes up next to you

    When I go out…
Yea, I know I’m going to be, I’m going to be that dog who goes along with you

    If I watch the game…
Yea, I know I’m going to be, I’m going to be that dog who watches next you

    And if I need out
Yea, I know I’m going to be, I’m going to be that dog needing to go out with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be that dog who walk a thousand miles to fall down at your door . . .

Link to real song so you can howl along! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rynxm_GQEsI

    Add more lyrics!

Guess what? WE GOT IT!!!!!!! My mom and dad went into B&N near here and checked on the in-store computer which said it was on the shelf in the mystery section. Well, it wasn’t there (not surprising), but dad played dumb (something he is very adept at) and went to the customer service desk and said he couldn’t find it on the shelf and asked if they could check in back (figuring they must have received it already in any event). The guy at the service desk went into the back and came out with a copy and my dad grabbed it out of his hands before the guy could even have a second thought. We’ve already read the first chapter, and let me tell you it was just great — vintage Chet and Bernie all the way. Woo! Woo! I’m twirling and everything. Wookie

Oh yes, Dear Mr. Redbone Hound, sir, I think you’re right on that!

The Acting crew was telling a story of a stabbing that happened near Hamlet (in another play). It was in Chinatown and it took 45 minutes for the SWAT team to get there. Must have been a lot of people going to the outhouse that day!

  39. Wolfie Wigglebutt
    3:09 pm on September 5th, 2011

Yup, I keep checking my kindle also, and am sol. Grump.

I have to work at the fair for six hours more today. It isn’t hard work at all. I work for an independent telephone company and we are rolling out some bundling services this fall, so all we have to do is let the folks spin a roulette wheel for free and pick out a prize. But jeez, I am not used to working with the public and the wheel is really loud, and I am beat. But mom and dad get overtime pay for their regular wage, and mom was too cheap to pass up a good opportunity.Of course, mom is really grumpy now because she is tired.

And I’ll tell you what; people are interesting. Mom was taking a break, eating some kettle corn and some lady reached into her bag and helped herself to the popcorn. Huh? That was weird. And some old guy with no teeth started hitting on dad. And he wouldn’t go away.

Zoë was googling some of her relatives and discovered that her Uncle was not only a war hero (we knew that), he had a US Patent for a system of Parking!

He didn’t call it this but the man invented Parallel Parking!

Someone was telling Barb about an old series of children’s stories called Betsey and Tacy. Who has read them? According to Wikepedia they are mentioned by Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail. Okay -so when we last left the tomato patch, we figured out (with the assistance of Debbie LM) that it was fuzzbutts eating our ripe tomatoes. And they only ate the beautifully, ripe ones.

So, in order to outfox them (is that a mixed metaphor?) we started picking the tomatoes when they were about a day or two from ripe. they would sit on the kitchen window sill until they were perfect, and we would have a wonderful tomato feast.

This was great – our first wonderful, huge, Cherokee Black was all purple on the bottom, with just a little green near the stem. So it was on the sill for two days. Last night it was just about all purple, and we planned what to have with dinner and tomatoes.

Then this morning, Gramp told us he had bad news….and he showed us the bottom two thirds of the purple tomato. On the window sill were some seeds….and some mouse poop.

Its a conspiracy, I tell ya.
    Sheesh.

Hey, y’all! Mom and my girl are back from their Girls Day Out. Finally. So I’ve been outside and now I’m back inside — thank goodness, it’s wet out there!

B&M: Mom has never read the B&T books, but her library has a set in the children’s section — they reprinted them in soft cover, and Mom says there are actually two stories in every book. They’re written by Maud Hart Lovelace. If you’d like, Mom can take a look at their books tomorrow and let you know what she thinks about them.

Wookie and SiberH: When Mom worked at Waldenbooks, one of her jobs was to scout the bookstore at the other end of the mall. If they broke embargo on any books, we were allowed to do the same because it would be an unfair advantage otherwise. Maybe that’s what happened with the display. I can’t explain the idiot salesperson who actually brought out a copy, though. We kept ours in the back on a dated shelf and were not allowed to bring them out until that date — unless the embargo was broken already!!!

Macy: About that other TKWKTM on Amazon – there was a funny story on F/b a couple of months ago. A Chet fan was telling Spence he had just received his book to which Spence responded, how is that possible? Turns out the poor guy had ordered the other Dog Who.

Liz: The Pacific Northwest is entering into the autumn of the year. We are enjoying unusually warm weather right now – both daytime and evening – and it has been very dry.

Barb&Magpie and Kirby: Thanks for the heads up about those children’s books. Nana thinks her friend’s grands would be interested.

Tupper&Gilly: That is a very sad tale of the beautiful tomato waiting on the window sill. Maybe you could put the next one under glass.

Conspiracy!….Tupper, between grandpa, the squirrels and now the mice, you guys don’t have a chance in hell of getting to eat one of those tomatoes…heh!

Bed!… Someone is so tired that she can’t keep her eyes open so we are going to be very early…snort!….Too bad we don’t have a tv in the bedroom that would put her out like a brick in no time…wuffle!

Ok, Texas is now begging for prayers, rain dances, crossed paws, airmailed buckets of water, even a large contingent of males to pee on the fires. Since yesterday, in Bastrop, near Austin 476 homes have been destroyed, a state record for one fire. Town of 70,000 under mandatory evacuation. Now they are putting out a plea for horse trailers, due to a large number of horse facilities in the area. OMD will this drought even end?

Macy, We saw coverage of Bastrop on the evening news. Tragic.

Kirby, We would appreciate a look see at the B&T books. Evidently they get more advanced as far as reading level as the girls age. Anxious to see what she thinks. Thank you.

Off to bed shortly. Good night all.

Macy – prayers for your safety and for all of Texas. Keep your nose in the air girlfriend, and at the first sniff of smoke, you get yourself OUTTA there!
Why is it always that one part of the country is drowning, and the other is on fire?

Gotta say goodnight – must be contageous – Mama is falling asleep sitting here too.

    See you all tomorrow!

Macy: When I saw the headline that said hundreds of homes had been lost in a fire near Austin, it just seemed like more pain was being heaped on people already suffering from the heat and drought. And in Japan, not only were they struck by the earthquake and tsunami, now they’ve been hit by the worst typhoon in years. Our thoughts and prayers go to everyone suffering through such disasters.

OK. Apologies for the lateness. I wrestled with this one. “Debbie” isn’t as easy as “Dawson” to rhyme. But I finally figured a way around it. And better late than never, right? So here goes:

Thanks to all for your concern for our neighbors. The ONLY good thing about being in the middle of the metroplex is that wildfires would have to burn up a LOT of concrete to get to us. However, we do live in the most wooded area in our town. Thank dog that the wind has died down and the humidity is supposed to be up tomorrow.

    Peaceful good night to all.

A late Happy Labor Day to everyone. The new book in on the Kindle and Mom can’t wait to start reading. Melanie, LOVED the picture of the acting trio yesterday. Mom did a double take on the jacket too when she saw the fringe on the sleeve, but could tell it wasn’t the auction jacket. T&G, hope your Mom’s friend in NM liked it.

The fires in Texas are really scary. Just outside of Houston, there is a fire that has destroyed several homes and barns. The neighborhood is one that has acreage and barns. Hope they were able to get the horses out. We always worry so much about the critters. Mom has been putting out food for the deer and she has quite a few that come everyday. She also has a small dog pool that she bought to fill with water for them. Today she saw a squirrel getting a big drink. It was actually a litle cooler yesterday and today. Hope that trend continues.

It’s late, but believe Mom will go read a chapter before she heads to sleep. Good Night.
