Reader Mail

Here’s a very recent email:

“Love this series. Just starting Heart of Barkness. As a dog lover/guardian I wanted to express my hope that the series won’t end with Chet’s death. Please let them retire somewhere after a successful investment payout. I would be heartbroken if Chet dies and could never reread the series. Anyone who has ever loved and lost a dog would surely agree. Here’s hoping!”

We get similar messages quite often. How can a writer answer without giving too much away and thus undermining his own suspense? I’ll take a swing at it:

  1. I don’t mind eliciting tears from the reader, but I won’t do it in cheap and easy ways.
  2. Chet is the narrator and sole voice of an ongoing series I love writing.
  3. I myself have no intention of retiring.

Rose!… My car is in the garage for an extended time period…sniff!…The repair (if it works) will cost my friend an arm and a leg…groan!…There is no Subaru dealership in this here town so it will be a gambol on replacing the suspected bad part. A very $$$$ expensive gambol….yeeep!…This year has been nothing short of expensive repairs. My friend says she will be broke by the end of December at this rate…gasp!

RIO! We here feel your pain regarding car repairs. For the past 6 months, Grizz’s car was making a knocking sound underneath when he made left turns. The car was in the shop several times before two weeks ago, the Toyota dealership finally discovered the problem. Said problem cost $1250. Yeep!

Pain!…Car-wise maybe. But have you and Grizz had to budget for 3 Very Large trees to be cut down?…gurgle!…A new garage door opener installed?…sniff!…Bathroom plumbing that needs to be plumbed??…grunt!…Property Taxes are due and have risen over 300.00 over the already very high amount!…growl!…Now the car comes in at who knows how much…weeep!…But it is our only car so therefore…wuffle!…And I’m leaving out other much smaller expenses that just keep adding up this year…bah!
