5.0 out of 5 stars – I love Chet – April 22, 2014
Barbara Callahan on A Fistful of Collars:
Chet is sooo wise. He could teach many people I know about observing life. This story from the perspective a dog is written beautifully. When reading the story one can create a picture in their mind of the relationship between Chet and his master Bernie. Anyone who has owned a dog would understand all of Chet’s actions.

Bernie is not Chet’s master. They are partners, for crying out loud.
9:12 am on April 23rd, 2014
Good morning all.
9:17 am on April 23rd, 2014
Well at least this lady didn’t call it a “read”. But we object to master and owned. Our Barb is not our master or mistress either! She is our companion or partner.
10:01 am on April 23rd, 2014
Greetings!
The horror! Chet and Bernie are partners in the Little Detective Agency!
I was laughing at the brisket story last night!
Have a wondrous Wednesday!
10:05 am on April 23rd, 2014
Good morning, everyone! Master? Owned? We know who is who around here and there ain’t no owning or mastering about it! We Rule this roost (take that Fern and POP)
What Wose said about Wednesday 🙂
10:22 am on April 23rd, 2014
How about “Anyone who has ever lived with a dog, or Anyone who has ever loved a dog….”? Much better!
10:24 am on April 23rd, 2014
Barb should have been an editor 🙂
10:29 am on April 23rd, 2014
Hello: Bernie is a sidekick, not a master.
A wondrous day!
There was no snow here last night (even though the news is now reporting we got about 8 inches). I can uncover the daffodil and tulips again.
10:39 am on April 23rd, 2014
Good morning! It is a Wondrous Wednesday for us us us !
What is a master? How about “anyone who has ever shared their home and heart with a Member of the Nation”? Too much, eh?
Dawson, awwww no snow. Are you bummed? We would be.
We woke up to a whole new Zeus. He is now a calmed down, well-behaved, very good boy. He is working from home with Mom. We are jealous.
10:50 am on April 23rd, 2014
Morning all.
We don’t have a master – we have a Mama. We do have to do what Mama says, but she also gives us love and treats and tummies. Would a “master” do that? We don’t think so.
Howlers – wonderful news on Zeus. Although we do admit we were looking forward to posts from and about the “blockhead”.
tee hee
10:53 am on April 23rd, 2014
T&G, Cheer up. We don’t yet know which is the Real Zeus/Blockhead! heh!
11:18 am on April 23rd, 2014
OH, perhaps Zeus is a Jeckyll and Hyde kind of guy? You think? Or maybe just stressed out with the move and new surroundings.
11:19 am on April 23rd, 2014
Howlers, Had Zeus been living in a foster home? Do you know his backstory?
We here know that Lucy Ball was living for 9 years with a loving older women, before her year in foster. She obviously was pampered and loved. She is used to sleeping on the sofa next to her person, and sleeping cuddled up at night on the people bed. She talks back to you when you ask her a question, with her aaarrrooo-rooo-rooo voice. Barb says she is a funny dog.
11:40 am on April 23rd, 2014
I like the Blockhead and the Knucklehead, (the “Heads”) and the “Reds”.
11:55 am on April 23rd, 2014
Howlers, I have the same question as Barb. Do you know Zeus’s background?
I read your post last night about Boris going to obedience school. Some trainers know nothing about the different breeds.
Callie and gramps were fortunate they went to a knowledgeable trainer.
Dawson, lol Me too, I like Heads and Reds.
12:01 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Our Blockhead was adopted from some spca or humane society when he was I forget how old. I have the name and contact info for that person so I can get the details of that part of his life later. This year, he was very stupidly advertised on some social media (Facebook or Craigs List or something), because of the baby’s allergies. An X-Volunteer with this Sibe Rescue (who they say is a loose canon), responded to the ad. The woman drove Zeus from Harrisburg to her. This loose canon dropped him off at a v-e-t before the former owner even arrived back home in Harrisburg. She said he wasn’t working out!!! He got into a tangle with her dog, and her dog had a drop of blood on him.
So the v-e-t contacted the Sibe Rescue, and he has been there since. That was in the later part of March. The rescue people are very nice. It is a farm and personal residence. Dogs come and go, and I think they let them do as they please, as long as nobody is getting hurt. So Zeus was not really used to rules. Here, there are rules. I am finding that he is a very quick learner.
12:02 pm on April 23rd, 2014
And I also like “Heads and Reds” !
12:14 pm on April 23rd, 2014
I would be willing to bet money that Zeus didn’t start that dog fight.
12:19 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Heh, heh…Heads and Reds.. Yep, gets our vote, too.
12:29 pm on April 23rd, 2014
We don’t know who started that fight, but we haven’t seen one iota of fight in Zeus. And here he is, in Mom’s office. They are working hard.

12:33 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Master no. Staff…yep.
12:35 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Popping in again, on another adventure. Regarding masters…yeah, makes me cringe. We’re partners, me and Leno. It’s a relationship based on mutual trust. Me personally, I’m also not Leno’s dad. He had one of those, and it isn’t me. I’m pretty sure Leno doesn’t care what you call it, just so long as you don’t call the walking stomach AKA Labrador late to dinner. Dinner might be late today though, being on the train and all. Should be getting into Boston at late o’clock. Conference at Perkins for a couple days. That would be the Perkins School for the blind 9or some other fancified name) in Watertown. Hanging at the crown plaza. Then meeting an Internet pal on Saturday, we might go to Salem. Not sure exactly. Then home on Sunday. Sleep on the train maybe, now that that whatever it was that was thumping earlier has mostly stopped doing that. So. Looooooong day for me. Longer day for Leno, probably, since park time is going to be a bit variable. Park time? Yeah, spell it backwards, except I don’t think that’s why they call it that.
12:38 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Abbie! Yes, I’m sure Abigail and Jasper would give a big ol’ paws up to that. Yes. Did I mention? Jasmine isn’t Jasmine, she’s Abigail. Suits her better and is less confusing for the two legs.
12:50 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Yark! That picture of Zeus…that could be me.
Buddy and Leno, Good to hear from you.
1:39 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Day 1 at rehab is going well. The PT people are impressed with Gramp already. The food is very good, the nurses are great. Only downside is a deaf roommate with a tv obsession. We are hoping he will be going home SOON.
2:23 pm on April 23rd, 2014
T and G–I am delighted to hear that things are going well with Gramp. May his progress be steady and quick.
Greetings all–Speaking as the personal slave to three of the Nation I react similarly to the owner/master thing. My brother favored the term “caregiver” but that sounds too custodial to me. I think of it as a partnership. (In my case that means I do the heavy lifting, but then, I’m the biggest in this household.)
I hope you all have a wonderful day.
2:24 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Diane, I react similarly to “guardian”. Just makes me wanna go “Ick!”
2:31 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Diane, we do the “guarding” around here. Case closed.
3:03 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Carpola!
The snow is falling.
3:06 pm on April 23rd, 2014
In regards to the “allergy” excuse, we think it is mostly b.s. I don’t think very many babies are born with allergies. Just sounds better to the rescue folks than, “now that we have the baby we just don’t want him anymore”.
We also like Heads and Reds.
Has anyone read Last Dog on the Hill?
3:16 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Maggie, we wondered about that baby allergy story also. The woman who wrote the nice letter is actually the mother/m-I-l of the couple who had Zeus. “Zeus was my son Jason and his wife Shannon’s family dog. They have a 7 year old son and a 7 week old son. The baby is allergic to pet hair and pet dander, so they had no choice but to find a home for Zeus.”
We never heard of Last Dog on the Hill. We googled it, and after seeing the first sentence, we can guarantee we will not be reading it.
3:18 pm on April 23rd, 2014
They adopted Zeus from the Humane Society 3 years ago. So he was already re-homed at not quite 2 years old! Then re-homed again in March. Then re-homed at the Rescue. And now here. Poor boy. It will take him awhile to know that this is his forever home.
3:38 pm on April 23rd, 2014
My folks were their first Siberian’s fourth owner…they are pretty sure the story that came with her was correct.
We are not sure about my story before West Texas.
I thought babies and little kids were suppose to be exposed to dogs, kats, and dirt so hopefully later in life they wouldn’t have allergies.
3:48 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Mom does not much like people. We love all people!
5:18 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Good to hear from Buddy and Leno. Safe and productive trip to Perkins.
5:48 pm on April 23rd, 2014
HA! We have heard that story about allergies too. When Mama found us at the shelter, the nice people there told her that we had been surrendered because the people that had us developed allergies. Hahahahahahahaa
The only thing they were allergic to was two mighty Kats running races down the hallways, smashing knickknacks right and left, and yurking up the occasional hairball.
On the other hand, there are days when Mama feels like SHE may be allergic to us too….
5:56 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Howlers, Yea, that first sentence doesn’t set well, but we are going to read it anyway. Zeus was picked up from a life of almost certain death, as a 6 month old stray, living near a Ca. hwy. He was infected with fleas and ticks and had a serious infected injury on his neck. He lived with his person for 16 years in a very connected life, before he passed of old age (don’t know if it was assisted or not). The book, from we have read so far is about what an outstanding dog he was and how much in life the author learned from living with and knowing this dog. The end might be sad, but apparently the two of them shared a wonderful life.
We stand by our first comment about kids and allergies. Yes, kids that are exposed to dirt and germs (including a natural, non-cesarean birth)and dog and cat hair will be less likely to have allergies. They are also finding that the germaphobic use of anti-bacterial soaps is creating allergy problems for children.
6:00 pm on April 23rd, 2014
I am SO SORRY! His name was NOT Zeus, obviously! The dog in the book we were talking about was named Lou. Barb had Zeus on her brain when she was writing the comments. Jeeze!
6:43 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Barb&Maggie: I did read that book. Yes, the dog does die in the end (actually he gets it over with on the first page so you might as well go on and read the happy parts now). An amazing dog and a great story by someone who trains dogs for a living.
6:45 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Mom is home, home, home and feeling very tired from all that gallivanting around.
B&M: You will have to ask BSD about Last Dog on the Hill, but I believe someone here has read it and gives it a thumbs up.
Now it’s time for her to catch up on the blog…then a kat nap and a quick snack…and we will be feeling brand new. ^..^
7:11 pm on April 23rd, 2014
BSD & Masquers…Welcome Home! The DDD gallivants too so we know you are probably pooped! Mom cries in happy stories so she is hopeless.
7:23 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Welcome back Nana, glad your trip was good, but we are happy that you are back with us where you belong.
Thanks Dawson and Masquers for the tips on Dog on the Hill.
7:40 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Welcome home, Nana.
B&M, now that you ‘splained the dying part, that book does sound “safe” to read. Let us know how you like it.
7:47 pm on April 23rd, 2014
MASQUERS! Wahooo – glad you are home. We have been needing some cool jazz around here, for sure.
7:52 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Welcome back, Nana! And a special welcome home to my dear Masquers , and the wise and wonderful Bera.
Hey, Buddy and Leno!
Siber-H, I have heard that every two-legged in the world has a twin somewhere.
Maybe you and Zeus …..?
7:57 pm on April 23rd, 2014
B&M, I can recommend a very good book called “Following Atticus.” Buddy if you can find an audio book version, I think you would enjoy it as well.
8:05 pm on April 23rd, 2014
American Idol is on now. They are down to six contestants.
8:26 pm on April 23rd, 2014
We are claiming discrimination! We tried out for American Idol, but there were votes from Alaska that booted us off!
8:45 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Good evening everybody! Mom is tired of working so hard and having to leave Dad by himself all day. Time to do a budget review and see if there is any way she can quit and stay home with Dad. She has already made comments about all of us losing our gourmet cat food and going back to regular chow! Oh my cat! We don’t know if we can handle that!! Problem isn’t that Mom makes alot of money, but she does have free insurance and that’s a big deal.
Decisions, decisions!
8:45 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Rose, We will check it out. Thank you. Hope you are feeling better.
8:50 pm on April 23rd, 2014

Rio, I’m thinking Sam is my favorite. The other guys are good but there’s something special about Sam.
9:12 pm on April 23rd, 2014
B&M, I am starting to feel a bit better. I think you will really like that book!
BooBear, I know how your mom feels.
9:14 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Sam?….The tweener Heart Throb….snort!…Very doubtful. Although he will have a very successful career ahead of him..heh!heh!
9:15 pm on April 23rd, 2014
MollysMaw!…Although, we have not seen him tonight yet, so maybe he has made an amazing break-through…((chorkel!))
9:17 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Rio, the real Grumpy Kat makes an appearance. Don’t miss it.
9:18 pm on April 23rd, 2014
BooBear, that is a tough decision. On the one paw, there is insurance. On the other paw, there is time. Both are important.
The ‘rents had delicious grilled tuna for dinner. Too bad T.C. Didn’t come around for some.
Time for us to zone out. Nighty night.
9:33 pm on April 23rd, 2014
MollysMaw!…Sam did Shine Bright tonight, he really did…snort!…Are you telling me Alice is making an appearance later?…Wow!
9:59 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Masquers and Bear, Welcome home!!
BooBear, Your family is in our prayers.
We are leaving tomorrow and will be away from the blog for a couple of weeks…no internet or cell phone service in some places. We are going to southern Utah and northern Arizona. I’ll miss you guys but I won’t really miss civilization. See ya when we get back.
10:02 pm on April 23rd, 2014
SiberH!…I hope youse are taking a radio so you can listen to the Rockies Games….snuffle!sob!sob!…I will miss my friend. Two damned weeks is a long time..wheeze!
10:04 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Camping!….I bet SiberH will be camping out and sitting around a campfire every night….Woooooo!…I hope he takes his tambourine, although it is hard to play a tambourine all by itself….sniffle!
10:13 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Rio: How is your friend’s knee?
10:18 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Mr. Husky, your trip sounds like heaven. Can I come too?
I finally got into Rick’s computer and discovered that he left me some helpful things, like a budget and passwords and log ins. I took the truck to Carmax today and they offered me a little over $20,000, so Rick’s beautiful truck will be leaving us tomorrow or the next day. Sad, but necessary. I am using his computer and it is a little disconcerting that I don’t have my pictures at hand, but I am sure I will get it figured out. I disconnected his phone today. Everyday another little piece of him leaves me.
Glad that Gramps is doing well in rehab. Hugs to him and the pink bulldozer, too.
10:22 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Thieves!…It is very smelly right now…peeee!UUUUUU….grunt!…But she is feeling a lot better she says…heh!…Today was minimal pain compared to days before, so this is hopeful…snort!
10:23 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Caleb!…He is Money!….Wooooo!…A big Rock N’ Roll Teddy Bear…heh!heh!…Me and my friend love him and he will win American Idol…snort!
10:33 pm on April 23rd, 2014
MollysMaw!…When we pick winners we pick them because we think America will vote for them and win the big Record Deal. This year we think Caleb (maybe Jena) will winnit, but our true heart and the guy my friend would go out and buy tickets to see or his CD would be Alex. He is the unique one. But he will not win Idol. He will have an amazing career because he is so uniquely talented….chuffle!
10:36 pm on April 23rd, 2014
ML, Sad, but you also have to be practical when it comes to finances, and I know Rick understands.
Getting ready to call it a night.
10:43 pm on April 23rd, 2014
ML!…Letting go gradually is very natural…sniffle!…My friend refuses to let some people go completely. She mostly looks forward to seeing them in heaven, and that is the only way I can explain it…wuffle!
10:50 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Someone said Rio would like this. You might remember the song this is modeled on. I actually hate the song’s lyrics, they are really creepy. This is better…snicker

10:53 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Rio and ML,
People you love never really leave you. They are in your heart and your mind forever. The things go away and often hurt when they do. But the people you love never leave you. Sniff
11:02 pm on April 23rd, 2014
BooBear, Our thoughts are with you as you struggle with this decision. Hugs to you.
11:04 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Staff!…heh!…The Stalker Lyrics…snort!…Apparently, it is a song about stalking and it was sung on Idol this year. I never realized the dark part until it was explained to me ….heh!grunt!..I hate when songs I love for “other” reasons are “explained” to me…sniff!
11:08 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Staff!…I know my friend’s best friend for over 18 years is still with her…sniff!…I also know Grandma is still with both of us….wuffle!…But we really miss them. We miss their humorous take on things and we miss their actual presence….sob!…Nothing can really replace that right now. But like I said, we look forward to seeing them in heaven…heh!
11:38 pm on April 23rd, 2014
SiberH: Enjoy your vacation away from civilization as we know it.
Masquers: Welcome back weatherkat! Can you tell me why there is 8 inches of snow in my front yard when yesterday there was none? Why, weatherkat, WHY!?
BooBear: Snuggle up with your family tonight and give them some love from me.
ML: Nice that Rick left you passwords and things on his computer. I hope you can find everything you need. I cannot imagine what you are going through, saying goodbye.
11:39 pm on April 23rd, 2014
SIBER – before you disappear into the wilderness, check your SDD.
BooBear – we love you and will be in your corner, whatever you decide.
ML – yes, it is hard to keep cutting those little strings that hold us to earth. But you still have two of the very best things to remember him by – Angie and Nicki.
We admire your courage and strength. You are quite a gal.
And now, we have to say goodnight. If we can’t be on American Idol, we ain’t watching it either.
11:50 pm on April 23rd, 2014
Siber-H! Goodbye for 2 Weeks? Gasp that’s a Long Time. And with
No Wifi or Internet? Yes, we know it well.
Someone Here misses so many Friends and Family she has lost count. Like Rio and Staff, she knows they will be waiting with open arms and paws when it is her time to cross the Bridge. Yet often their presence can be felt in the Here & Now. Sniff.
11:59 pm on April 23rd, 2014
BSD – one word – butterflies.
(sniffling just a bit)
12:02 am on April 24th, 2014
It’s that time…Time to call it a night.
Thinking of Gramp, Macy’s Mom, BooBear’s Mom & Dad, Wose and Zoe & Family.
Sending Love & HUgs to all.
G’night. Sleep tight. See youse at the Morning’s Light.

Calling MIKE BAKER
OK now the link to my blog has been doing funny things. I never change it or touch it in any way but extra letters are appearing in it and then it doesn’t work. What is going on? I have changed it back twice now and am starting to worry that someone is trying to hack us somehow.
1:09 am on April 24th, 2014
I keep trying to send this…will try one more time
Free WiFi in hotel in Istanbul. Today we walk the city from 8:30 am – 6:30 pm. Yeep. Everything very Turkish but huge western influence. Signs in English and a lot of familiar brands. Weather perfect–on the cool side which is great for walking. Food is wonderful.
A little over 9-hour flight from NYC. Was fed two multi-course meals preceded by a sweet, hot washcloth for hands and a meal menu to pick food/drink choices. Also given slippers, ear phones, an eye mask and a toiletry bag. 100s of movies to choose from plus music, internet and games. Are you guys jealous yet? Last night I dreamed of youse as travel companions with me in the group.
Will try and post tonight and catch up on the blog. Tomorrow we head out into the countryside. Everyone take care.
