R.I.P.: SiberH
We are very sad to hear of the death of SiberH (also known as Caleb), a very important part of this blog, and one of nature’s beauties. We’ll miss him.

Thank you Spence and Admin, for honoring our friend. He was special and he will be missed.
8:45 am on February 12th, 2015
We will miss Mr Siber H. and we thank OFA for the tribute.
So much happened yesterday we are still reeling from it. Love, pawrayers and a space under the quilt to all who need it.

I miss Siber-H very much already and I’m thinking of his mom.
Good morning all.

Thank you Spence, for paying tribute to our handsome and good friend, Siber-H. I will miss him. Hugs and loving thoughts being sent to his mom, Nikki. sob
9:21 am on February 12th, 2015
He was a grand puppy. He loved baseball, Iditarod, snow, slim jims, bacon and his stuffed huskie that had to sit up on the shelf. He loved his mom who lent him credit cards, walked him to the dog park before dawn, took him camping in his own truck, and cared for him so he could have a healthy life.
We know he is safe and healthy now, probably has his own snowbank to excavate. But we will miss him.
Thanks, Spence for giving voice to our grief.
9:39 am on February 12th, 2015
Thank you, Spence.
Thinking of Siber’s mom. Both of them: such welcoming members of this blog family.
Good morning all.
10:02 am on February 12th, 2015
Sorry to read the news about SiberH. We’re sending warm thoughts and prayers to his mom.

Yesterday, feeling such Deep Sadness at the loss of our dear blogmate and friend, we traveled back Into the Past to reminisce, and found ourselves in 2009, the first year of Chet’s Blog.
It seems to me you say things and then your mom or pop or nana or someone is there to write them down and then one day in the future, which was yesterday, it all comes true.
Here is that message from him. It is a message for today.

I’m going to make a donation to a local rescue group in memory of Jeter. I can think of no better way to honor a hero who has gone to Rainbow Bridge. It’s a wonderful place to wait for our humans. There will be sheep for Jeter to watch over, perps for Chet to catch, snow for me, and ribs for all of us!
Your Friend,
Snowdog
And we can think of no better way to honor OUR friend and hero than to make a donation to Snowhook in his name, and the running of the 2015 Iditarod.
As AJ always says, see you on the trail Siber-H.
11:03 am on February 12th, 2015
Good Morning and thank you, SQ, for the tribute.

Sob!Sob!Sob!Sob! …I miss my best pal so very much…sob!sob!sob!
11:44 am on February 12th, 2015
Good morning all.
Thanks to Spence for honoring our friend with a hat tip up top.
The water works started up immediately upon seeing his beautiful face. Now I am busy replacing each tear with a wonderful memory. We have so many happy memories of our Siber friend.
Mike Ellis in 11th place halfway through the Yukon Quest? Go Mike!
BSD&Masquers: Good idea. I will make a donation in honor of the Siber that introduced us to the Quest and the Iditarod.

Luna has wrapped Rio in the Quilt like a burrito, but she doesn’t know what to do to console a pug’s aching and breaking heart. Sniff.
12:01 pm on February 12th, 2015
Thieves – Siber will never be far from Rio’s heart. Somehow we believe they will still be off on adventures together, especially during baseball season.
Siber will never be far from any of our hearts.
12:02 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dear SiberH’s Mom: You are very much in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. SiberH always used to say that Trigger was his hero. What he didn’t know was SiberH was his hero too. My boy is gone now. He just spent his last Christmas with the family. When he left a special part of me left with him, as I know a special part of you left with SiberH. I can picture the two of them now, with the rest of the pack – happily digging holes and playing in the snow – enjoying an ever lasting supply of Slim Jims.
Love & Hugs,
Trigger’s Mom

Mama Luna, they say that time heals all wounds. Not true, The wound is still there it just doesn’t hurt this badly anymore. Revel in the memories.
12:11 pm on February 12th, 2015
Spence, Thank you very much. The photo and honor make me cry but it also warms my heart.
I love all of you and deeply appreciate all the kind words of comfort and good memories.
12:17 pm on February 12th, 2015
Trigger’s Mom, I am sorry that you lost Trigger. I know he was there to greet Siber at Rainbow Bridge and lead him to some counters to surf where every mission is a success.
12:31 pm on February 12th, 2015
Onto happier subjects:
AJ, WOW! Thank you for all the new Iditarod information. I may spend this afternoon looking at a map of Alaska and re-reading your post.
I am so excited about where Mike Ellis is in the Yukon Quest. I am going to be holding my breath.
Howlers, There is a very short video of Mike and dogs coming into a checkpoint on the Quest’s facebookie page. Scroll down a bit to find it.
Siber and Rio have ruined my spelling abilities which were never very good to start with.
I am so cheering for Bent Sass to win the Quest this year. He has to be one of the good guys. More than once he has given up
his time in the Quest to stop and help other mushers and dogs in trouble.
12:43 pm on February 12th, 2015
Yes! Go Brent Sass! He is sensible and gives his dogs the glory, as it should be.
AJ: Oh yeah! Thanks for the info.
I am thinking that I can use the new drop bags schedule for the checkpoints. So that if the drop bags for Your old checkpoint are assigned a new checkpoint, that will be your new checkpoint. There will be some sharing of a couple checkpoints. Would that be okay with everyone? I have to look at AJ’s post to see who goes where. I will get that done later today…much later today. Do not hold your breath!
12:48 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dawson, isn’t that what teamwork is all about? Go for it!
1:08 pm on February 12th, 2015
I know that all donations are welcome, but I have lost track of our current targets! Anyway, I am donating $25.00 in Siber’s memory and honor. Would someone tell me into what it is going? I will get on the Snowhook website and take care of the payment later today. Right now I am shepherd to my flock of sixth graders in the library. They are reading silently! It is the day before the February vacation, and they are silent. Will wonders never cease?
I know that my sister and others are revving up on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, gathering and organizing for the great race. I know it is lively! I wonder how they will let AJ know that they are right there with him during the race…
1:31 pm on February 12th, 2015
Beautiful tributes to SiberH abound, and that is so as it should be. What a friend he has been. But the greatest tribute of all, in my eyes, is the grace and strength with which Siber’s Mom carries on and honor’s Siber’s life by boosting everyone here and continuing focus on the important weeks to come. Bless her heart. And thanks to Spence for the tribute up top. I’m glad the quilt is big enough for all.
1:51 pm on February 12th, 2015
I received a generous donation to Snowhook which fully funded resident hugger and nurse Savannah. That makes 12 Race Dogs and 13 Otherwise Dogs that we sponsored. Wow. The generosity on this blog never ceases to amaze me.
Siber’s mom, Thanks for letting us know about the Team Tsuga video. We will watch it later with Mom.
2:06 pm on February 12th, 2015
And just when we thought the waterworks were easing off a bit, up pops Martha and ALR with their touching posts.
ALR: I must agree…Siber’s mom is probably doing more to lift our spirits than we are doing to lift hers. But, of course, she IS Siber’s mom, and he is the Best.
Spence, Your tribute is so appreciated by each and every Plunderer. Yes, I know, he was your friend too, and one of the very first to post on Chet’s blog.
The foto up top is fast becoming one of my all time favorites. I believe it is one the Royal Mum posted yesterday.
2:13 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dawson, Sharing checkpoints is fine with me. This is going to be a new experience for us along with the Iditarod dogs and mushers.
Thank all of you for your donations in Siber’s memory. He would appreciate each and everyone of them. I am going to donate to Snowhook as a tribute to him. He would expect no less. lol
2:34 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dawson: Gah. Checkpoint Redo! All I can say is better you than me. One has to have a brain to do these things…and unlike you…mine is in Brain Fog Mode.
Yes to Doubling Up on the Checkpoints. Whatever you need to do to make it all come together is fine with us.
Good Idea to use AJ’s List. How everyone is keeping all this straight is beyond me.
We just found out that one of Nana’s Facebookie Friends, coming over from Denmark for the Iditarod, will be among the many who will not be able to see the restart in Fairbanks. Needless to say she is very disappointed. Lots of changed plans and disappointed Alaskan Visitors and Natives alike.
It is good that some of youse, like the O’Howler’s Mom who doesn’t like to fly, got to see the Willow Restart last year.
Yay for the Sibe Team!!
2:43 pm on February 12th, 2015
Two Thoughts:
I know the Iditarod Trail Committee had to change the route, but this is going to cost the mushers more money.
Will the Insider’s GPS tracker be able to adjust to this route change.
2:49 pm on February 12th, 2015
Siber’s Mom: Yeep! We hadn’t even thought of that! I wonder how the GPS system works.
3:02 pm on February 12th, 2015
The GPS individual trackers will work wherever they are turned on and placed (like in the sleds). The tracking company will have to re-draw the map of the route and get it up on the Iditarod’s website. I don’t know if they are up to that. I hope they can because it would be fun to see the re-start from Fairbanks on their map.
3:03 pm on February 12th, 2015
I would like to donate in Siber-H’s memory also. Do I send the check directly to Snowhook? (I’m confused at this point…sorry.)
I’m fine sharing a checkpoint.
3:04 pm on February 12th, 2015
Siber’s mom, excuse our scepticism but frequently the IRC cannot find itself in a paper bag! Here is hoping those “little” mistakes from years past (and repeated) will go away so the mushers are “visible” to their suporters! And safer on the trail, we hope.
3:13 pm on February 12th, 2015
Stover, Thank You! Yes, send the check directly to Snowhook. I am going out soon to mail my check.
HOH I have the same doubts. I haven’t brought this up yet, but how many technical problems will the Insider have when they are trying to show us the live re-start from Fairbanks.
3:18 pm on February 12th, 2015
On the Insider’s “Iditarod Weather Center,” they list all of the checkpoints that were listed in AJ’s post last night, including Fairbanks. The weather there is 1 degree F.
3:21 pm on February 12th, 2015
Also, under “Race Center” they have a race map titled “Fairbanks Route 2015” with the checkpoints and distances listed.
Thank you Siber’s Mom; I’ll send a check.
3:34 pm on February 12th, 2015
For those who want to donate in honor of our friend choose a dog to help sponsor, we could have a few more dogs sponsored. Just a suggestion.
Here is an interesting article about an old-timer musher from one of the new checkpoints on the Iditarod Trail.

We are very sure Mr Siber H introduced most of us to the Last Great Race. But we think now, in deference to said special Siber, would be a good time to say how we became affiliated with Snowhook and tell the Plunderer story, WE have some really new Plunderers and some other special folke who would love to know, and we all know our mom is a rotten teller of stories 🙁
3:36 pm on February 12th, 2015
Hmmm. that first sentence could have been edited to make sense. I know y’all know what I mean.
3:37 pm on February 12th, 2015
I received another donation for a Snowhoook Dog in honor of Siber-H. Tthis one is especially poignant, because it is to sponsor Pancho in full. Siber-H sponsored his partner, Lefty.
3:46 pm on February 12th, 2015
If anyone would like to sponsor a Snowhook Dog in honor of Siber, email me at snowhookdogs@ail.cm
As of now, we are sponsoring 13 Race Dogs and 13 Otherwise Dogs. Zowie! Siber would be so proud.

It is hard to believe that 4 weeks from today mom’s 2015 Alaska adventure will be over and she we be headed home to us, us, us. Where has the time gone? So much to still do before the Iditarod and so little time.
3:59 pm on February 12th, 2015
Stover, Thank you for the map information. This makes life easier.
Thank you to whoever sponsored Pancho. Whitey-Lance, Pancho, and Lefty were Siber’s heroes in the Snowhook kennel. Except for Chet, Siber’s choice in heroes was sometimes questionable. (Thieves and a dog who had an exciting vacation in the Alaska wilderness…unsupervised)
Dawson, Thanks for the link to the interesting article.
4:00 pm on February 12th, 2015
Ray Reddington Jr. has scratched.
MIke Ellis posted photos from Dawson Checkpoint, but we cant find the video Siber’s mom told us about.
4:05 pm on February 12th, 2015
Howlers, The video is still there on the Quest’s facebookie page, but you have to scroll even further down now. It is a small video that doesn’t take up much space and it is very dark, and very short. The comment is that his dogs looked very good coming into the checkpoint.
4:13 pm on February 12th, 2015
Sibers Maw!…It is easing my heartache seeing you out posting…sniffle!…I was worrit you would leave us too…wuffle!
4:15 pm on February 12th, 2015
Cost!…Siber-Maw makes a very good point. This race is going to cost even more money because of the changes…yeeep!…Donations are very much appreciated right now – and the sooner the better!…snort!

Natty has been opened for funding. Yay for Natty!!!
4:30 pm on February 12th, 2015
Thanks for the update, Howlers. We are sending in a donation for Natty in Siber’s name (she has been giving us “the look”.)
We’ll send you a Gmail.

Natty, What a sweet, pretty face. That is a good picture.
5:32 pm on February 12th, 2015
Puppy love…

5:34 pm on February 12th, 2015
Masquers: Natty has that head tilt thing going on that makes her irresistible.
5:44 pm on February 12th, 2015
One strategy that Brent Sass has been using in this year’s Quest is long runs and long rests. I like to see that because sleep deprivation on the part of the musher can play a big part in decision making as the race goes on. With the longer rest period, the musher might actually get a little sleep. I wonder how they manage to wake up…I’ve never heard of alarm clocks on the Trail.
I have to paint a ceiling (ugh!) then I will work on the checkpoints. The new map did not print well from the Iditarod.com site. I can get the whole trail if I print the page so tiny I can’t read it. If I enlarge and then print, all the new checkpoints are cut off. Sigh.
5:53 pm on February 12th, 2015
Before I go painting I would like to say that Mike Ellis arrived into Dawson City ahead of Lance Mackey, if I’m reading the charts correctly!
Whoo Hoooo! Go Mike! The weather has been good (cold) for the Sibers so far.
6:04 pm on February 12th, 2015
Staff, I never put Fatty Kitty on the blog start list because I thought he was just keeping us up-to-date on your surgery. Now I see lots of posts so I need to add it. What was the date of your surgery?
6:06 pm on February 12th, 2015
The standings are saying that Mike is #10 now. I am going into nervous wreck mode.
6:08 pm on February 12th, 2015
A new Otherwise Dog is now open for funding: Coach. So many of you are donating, all in memory of our beloved Siber-H.
So for the record: you can now make your Snowhook donations go toward Race Dog and Leader Natty, or toward Otherwise Dog and Saver of puppies, Coach.
HOH, we love that picture, and Mom agrees with the sentiment completely.
Dawson, we here agree that the very cold weather has been great for Mike Ellis and his Team Tsuga.
6:14 pm on February 12th, 2015
We hope everyone has a chance to read the very interesting article about Old Time Musher George Attla. It is in the link that Dawson posted earlier.
The fictional account of his life, Spirit of the Wind, is on YouTube but, as you can see was recorded from a VHS tape and is of a very poor quality. The article mentioned that DVDs may be for sale in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
ATTLA: A new documentary film is due to come out soon.
This year’s Race Half-Way point is in Huslia, Attla’s home village.

Or the Central Valley. Gosh, y’all have springlike temps while the rest of these U.S. shiver!
8:19 pm on February 12th, 2015
HOH, here in Vancuver, WA iit is a lovely spring day…..and that worries me. What worries me even more is the lack of snow in the Rockies. The webcams at Yellowstone show a scary amount of bare ground never seen before in February. They need snow bad and lots of it.
8:42 pm on February 12th, 2015
It has been warm here, but we are in a drought. Y’all are hogging all the weather.
8:42 pm on February 12th, 2015
we will bark and agree!
8:43 pm on February 12th, 2015
From now until Monday, we will have temps below 0, with wind chills from -10 to -30. We may be Siberian, but we are the fireplace/pellet stove variety of Siberians.

Dear Yellowstone,
If you want snow, we would be happy to ship some to you.
Lots of it.
9:37 pm on February 12th, 2015
I thought it was a reference to the Pacific Northwest, which is cold and rainy. I could be wrong though.
9:46 pm on February 12th, 2015
Laughing…Yes, Barb. HOH is referring to the post of 7:49 pm. She is calling Camano Island, “Fungus Corners” presumably because it is surrounded by water. You gotta know how her warped mind works…
9:47 pm on February 12th, 2015
Wolfie, you win. Barb and others, in the 1960′ s there was a weatherman in SoCal, Dr. George Fishbeck, who, whenever he told what was hapening in the Pacific Northwest, called it, “Fungus Corners” because of the dampness and grey skies. We think of him whenever a weather report come along with rain or mist or gloom for the northwest. Didn’t mean it to be offenive.
9:52 pm on February 12th, 2015
I’ll be sending a check for $25.00 to Snowhook in memory of SiberH tomorrow. I mention this only because I think someone someplace has been keeping track of blog donations.
9:53 pm on February 12th, 2015
HOH: No offense intended, heh! And, I didn’t mean warped, exactly…more like weird. Hmmmm. I’ll shut up now.
9:53 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dawson, our “warped mind”… you got it. P.S. once upon a time, the DDD said he was glad Dawson and the HOH weren’t closer together or there would be heck to pay. Think he enjoyed the visit last March.
9:53 pm on February 12th, 2015
sniff.

We loved CHobbit’s post with things to do in Fairbanks with the start of the Iditarod. Hope we can get involved with ome of this.
10:05 pm on February 12th, 2015
TYB, Thank you very much.
HOH, Fishbeck got his start in Albuquerque and then went to southern CA. He left shortly after I arrived in Albuq. I know I saw him on tv but I don’t remember much about hm.
10:06 pm on February 12th, 2015
Thanks for the explanation. I am never quite sure where these expressions come from, but usually there is a logical thread somewhere. You just have to follow the twists and turns of her alleged mind.
10:11 pm on February 12th, 2015
Wrote my check to Snowhook in memory of Siber-H. Now am going to walk Sadie down slick and snowy paths and think of him.
10:15 pm on February 12th, 2015
Alleged!…Mind!…snort!…I laughed out loud over that one! And I never laugh out loud..heh!heh!
10:19 pm on February 12th, 2015
1) Rio, know you would laugh at that 🙂
2)Siber’s Mom, never knew where Dr. George came from, but he was a hoot!
10:20 pm on February 12th, 2015
“Alleged”! And I thought it was an insult to say “warped”! I admit I lol too.
10:26 pm on February 12th, 2015
Having grown up in Southern California, I remember Dr. George! Haven’t thought of him in decades.
10:29 pm on February 12th, 2015
Dawson, warped is really cool. Rio, alleged is opinion, which can be challenged.
Siber’s Mom, good to know Dr. George came from somewhere. …Damned “s” key is sticking again but never fear, we’ll fix it.
10:31 pm on February 12th, 2015

Muted excitement over the upcoming race. I know Our Friend would have had inciteful things to tell us about this new course, maybe his maw will have some things to tell us.
I am up extra late tonight because my after work nap ran over till 8:30 and Macy has a hurt leg that I am keeping a watch on. I want to give her another pain pill before we call it a night. Please pull a little corner of the quilt over her tonight.
goodnight framily
11:06 pm on February 12th, 2015
ML, Read your post last night. Siber was very proud to tell everyone he was a Texan.
I hope Macy’s leg feels better soon.
Hugs and thanks again to all of you for donating to Snowhook in Siber’s memory. He would be so grateful, especially now that this route change will cost them extra money.
Love and goodnight all
