R.I.P. Jack Bruce
“Best known from Cream, but he had a long career in music,” Admin says.
“For many years, I thought he was the son of Nigel Bruce, who played Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone (and is the source of the name for Ingrid’s dog in the Echo Falls series). But he wasn’t.”

Good morning, everyone! Like our Grandma said, at least we are on the right side of the dirt. Hey. how’s the Snowhook truck hunt going?
In the high 30’s here….BRRRRRRRRRR! (for here)
Have a shivery Saturday.
7:45 am on November 1st, 2014
Greetings!
No trick or treaters have ever come to our door in the whole time we have lived in this development. I guess they can go to the rich side of town or the wealthy surrounding neighborhoods and get better swag there.
Hobbit: Your kitties are soooo cute!
One of my favorite Cream songs is “I Feel Free.” Great guitarist in that group. You may know him. His name is Eric Clapton.
7:55 am on November 1st, 2014
Morning all. We love the kittens of last night. Mama really wants the seal point. We suggested she trade two herbs for a seal of approval. She failed to see the humor.
Heading out for Gramp’s new hair cut. Shouldn’t take too long. tee hee
7:57 am on November 1st, 2014
T&G: I’m sure Gramps will look quite handsome upon his return.
You naughty dogs….I am sure boxes and packing tape are always at the ready.
8:06 am on November 1st, 2014
Don’t forget to set your clocks back at 2am. Even though it is likely I will be awake then, I set my clocks back before I go to bed. heh!
8:52 am on November 1st, 2014
Ugh. We hate how dark it is when the ‘rents get home from work. But this year, all 5 of us have headlamps and safety vests. Mom says we will no longer hide in the house after dark. Yeah. We’ll see how that works.
Mom is back under the quilt. She coughs all night, and shivers all day. Fortunately for all of us, today is cold and rainy, so staying indoors is a good option.
8:57 am on November 1st, 2014
Jack Bruce was 71. (Perhaps he was the reference for the “Gone too soon” post.)
I didn’t know Ingrid’s dog was named after Nigel Bruce. Interesting. (It’s also interesting to compare the various “translations” of the Holmes and Watson characters in films over the years.)
Good morning all.
8:58 am on November 1st, 2014
O’Howlers: make sure the quilt is tucked nice and tight around your mom. Hope she feels tip-top soon!
8:59 am on November 1st, 2014
HRH, B: I think you are right about “gone too soon.” What an excellent detective you would make.
9:00 am on November 1st, 2014
Mom likes Cream too. And yes, 71. Is too soon. We thought maybe that reference was about the long-time mayor of Boston though.
9:04 am on November 1st, 2014
It’s cold and wet here. There were a few flakes of snow in the air this morning when I went out for my early walk. Speaking of walks, here’s an alert for a new app on the iPhone (and maybe any smart phone). It’s called Walk the Dog. Once it’s downloaded, you pick a shelter to benefit from your walks. I don’t know how the amount is determined, but the sponsors of the app donate from 11 to 25 cents to your shelter for every mile you walk your dog. When you start out, open the app and click on “Start my walk.” Your app follows you and tells you your distance walked, your speed, and how long the walk lasts. We use it during all our walks and try to alert other dog walkers to download and use the app for their favorite shelter.

Here and on time is the November calendar page. I can’t believe that we have only 54 days until Christmas and 61 days until New Year’s Day.
9:30 am on November 1st, 2014
Hey there, Tyb! I have missed you on this here blog. Thank you for the November calendar page! What a jaunty hat. Have you finished your studies at Yale?
9:42 am on November 1st, 2014
Hi Tyb! Thanks for the calendar, and the reminder that is is NOVEMBER!!! Yikes!
Mom has that app. She tried using it on one of our hikes, but when we got back to the car, she looked, and it had stopped tracking. She says we will give it another try, for more local walks.
10:05 am on November 1st, 2014
Wose,
I haven’t finished my studies yet, but I think I’m going oh hiatus. My dad told them we wouldn’t be coming up once the weather gets bad. It’s almost a 7 hour drive for us and we don’t want to fight the bad roads and winter conditions. We’ll pick it up again in the spring.
10:24 am on November 1st, 2014
Good morning all. Nice to see you TYB. Sorry to hear that Howler’s mama is not feeling well.
Eric Clapton we know, Jack Bruce, never heard of him. Sorry, I think we don’t listen to enough music.
We think Spence was referring to the mayor. We liked what we saw of him after the Boston bombing.
Has anyone used a heated bird bath for winter? I want to get one but don’t know what type is best.
10:25 am on November 1st, 2014
Tyb: I think taking a break during the unpleasant winter weather is a good idea. Seven hours…Egads! That is a long trip. Despite your hiatus, I am sure you will still be top dog at Yale!
10:28 am on November 1st, 2014
B,M&L: Since I have an older sister and brother, I was exposed to all kinds of music growing up during the 60’s. My brother was a Cream fan. Jack Bruce was the lead singer and bass guitarist, and Ginger Baker was the drummer.
11:25 am on November 1st, 2014
Hello All–A a pause to note that the lovely Mr. Bruce has gone on ahead of us. Sigh. Does this year’s reaping seem unusually big, or is it just the effect of time passing?
I heard from a student who has submitted no work, taken neither examination given so far, missed most class meetings, and now wants to know why he has been dropped from the class.
My response is to head for morning meditation and then pickle a LOT of fruit in rum and Manischewitz for next month’s baking. Or maybe I’ll just wait a week and then eat the fruit.
Have a great day, everyone–I’m still catching up on the past week’s posts. Oh, and WE HAD RAIN LAST NIGHT!!!!!! (Happy)
11:43 am on November 1st, 2014
We all are waiting for Dawson to arrive tonight. If her iPaw is still broken, maybe we can fix it.
A. Catty is curious about Diane’s rum-pickled fruit. Is that for fruit bread?
11:46 am on November 1st, 2014
DianeC: (musical nortes) Time passages…there’s so much….. Oh well.Hey, at least he didn’t say, “The dog ate my homework”.
11:47 am on November 1st, 2014
P.S. Still in the low 40’s here. BRRRRRRRR….again!
11:52 am on November 1st, 2014
BTW: regarding Darah and school. She now comes, sits and walks (sometimes well). This week we worked on “Lie Down”, sorta, kinda. The teacher says she is a bit stuborn. Go Figure! But She can do it, with encouragement! Zoe, Newfie input?
12:03 pm on November 1st, 2014
First we want to say – on behalf of the 1st of the month – Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
Next we want to say, Gramp looks STUNNING! He was delighted with the experience. Never had his hair washed by a professional. His hair is now shaped and nicely cut, his sideburns are shorted and now even, and the stylist even did his eyebrows. He has already booked his next appointment in 6 weeks.
Barb – as far as heated birdbaths, the Wrotten Kats suggest that you build a fire in your barbeque grill and put a big pot of water on. They say they will take it from there.
Not quite sure what that means, but it doesn’t bode well for the birdies.
Cold, wet and rainy here. So Mama is making hot wings and clam chowder for dinner. Woo hoooo!
12:48 pm on November 1st, 2014
We agree, Whoo hoo!
1:27 pm on November 1st, 2014
Good afternoon all! Had to have a plumber out for kitchen sink (sigh). This kind of stuff is a pain!
Here’s a picture of my ex-neighbor’s son and his wife and dog decked out for Halloween. How cute is that Rodesian Ridgeback!!

1:28 pm on November 1st, 2014
We are having our first fall like weather. It is wonderful!

Waiting!…For a phone call or some such thing and watching “To Kill A Mockingbird”…wheeze!…Someone here does not like waiting for some others sometimes…grunt!
2:21 pm on November 1st, 2014
BooBear, great costumes! But they need a tinman.
2:23 pm on November 1st, 2014
Cute couple with the Rhody.
Boobear, Have you recently seen the deer with the extra headpiece?
We looked at ceramic bird baths and found an electrical heating unit for $30.00 that can be used with ceramic. Pondering….
We are wondering about the pickled fruit too.
2:26 pm on November 1st, 2014
Mom knows who Jack Bruce was. I do not.
Howlers,I hope your mom feels better soon.
2:39 pm on November 1st, 2014
Rio, TKAM, our mom loves that book and movie…Wowser!

Mollypop’s Mom
My adventures with Amazon today:
I ordered an e-book using IE. The sale went through even though a notice popped up saying I could no longer use this browser, and they wouldn’t sell me anything if I used this browser. They have a list of approved of browsers a customer can download. Internet Explorer is on the list.
GO FIGURE and GAH
I ordered another e-book using Google chrome. No problems and no notices popping up.

3:12 pm on November 1st, 2014
Mom purchased a ebook through amazon today using IE and it worked fine. No messages. Yeah, go figure.
3:22 pm on November 1st, 2014
Since dogs have chosen to liive with us from time immororial why can’t we love them equally?
4:18 pm on November 1st, 2014
Maggie, Mom has not seen the deer since the day he let her get close. I won’t tell Mom, but I don’t think that is a good sign.
4:39 pm on November 1st, 2014
Boo, don’t tell your Mom, but we agree with you. Sad when you want to help but can’t.
Today we carried the glass bird baths, outside pots and pillow cushions to the garage, then put the canvas cover on the patio set.
All gone till next April.
4:45 pm on November 1st, 2014
OH MY KAT!!!!! Mom just sent an email to a rescue organization about the possibility of adopting a basset!!! A DOG !!!!
Has she gone mad without Dad here to stop her????

Siber-H, I found it. Version 3.0 of the SSL protocol has a vulnerability. That tells me you need to upgrade Internet explorer. Amazon’s software has detected this in your version of IE.
The Internet has 7 layers and SSL is the secure sockets layer. That’s where credit card and other sensitive info is encrypted. I recommend that you do not use this browser anymore for Amazon or anything else without doing an update.
4:59 pm on November 1st, 2014
Barb, when I had my house and garden I had a heated birdbath. I loved it and so did all the little birdies who came to clean their feathers during the winter. It uses up water quickly so you have to keep an eye on it to keep it full.
5:07 pm on November 1st, 2014
Barb, I have this heated bird bath at Dad’s house and also one here at the farm. I really like them and have had the one at the farm here for a long time. The one at Dad’s I have only had for 3 winters.
Allied plastics
http://www.bestnest.com/bestnest/RTProduct.asp?SKU=API-650
5:10 pm on November 1st, 2014
MPM, Did yours have a heating element that sat down in the water or did the whole birdbath plug in?
Boobear, Lucy is half Basset and I think her personality is Basset. She is really fun and a big goofball.
5:15 pm on November 1st, 2014
Barb, the whole birdbath plugged in. I think the ones that have a separate heater element are for keeping animals drinking water thawed. I don’t think you’d want the little birdies to touch the heating element.
5:15 pm on November 1st, 2014
I have heard that the separate heaters are not as good as the internal ones. They tend to get knocked out or off and if the water all evaporates they can burn up. The Allied Plastics one has always worked well for me. If the water is all gone it turns off. It is a weight sensor somehow. So you are not supposed to put anything in the center of the bath for whatever reason. Just fill it with water.
They always come with the deck mounting and I never use it. I just set it flat on the deck or on a cement block (or at Dad’s house, a stump) to hold it above the snow.
5:22 pm on November 1st, 2014
Boo Bear – we think that your Mom loosened up that piece of fencing that was on the deer, and he was able to get it off from there. That’s what we believe, and that’s that!
(And tell her that a Bassett is a great idea. A Corgi is even better)
5:31 pm on November 1st, 2014
BooBear, don’t listen to the Corgis. Thy will have all your Kat family herded like sheep.
5:40 pm on November 1st, 2014
Staff, I did see that one at BirdNest.com, and it looks good. I am not sure tho, that my porch railing is wide enough. The mounting looks like it is designed for a wider railing. I do have that one to show to Josh, because now they want to get it for a Christmas gift.
MPM. the heater they have at the garden center is designed for a bird bath. It is not the exposed coils like I had for my horse tank. It sits flat like a rock in the bottom, and can be used with ceramic or cast concrete. However, Staff has a good point about it burning out if it isn’t kept covered with water.
5:40 pm on November 1st, 2014
Mollypop’s Mom, Thank you very much. I get it now. You explained it very well to me.
5:43 pm on November 1st, 2014
Home!..My friend is finally home from from my other house and she says all is well and well taken care of so I should not worry about it anymore…heh!…Of course I will worry about my other house, no getting around it…sniff!…Mother is already cooking supper!…Yeeeep!.It s only 4:40ish here. But supper is always a good idea….heh!

Birds!…What did those dumb birds do before heated bird baths…grunt!
7:22 pm on November 1st, 2014
MPM – oh, so Siber is a good dog, but BooBear’s Mom should avoid Corgis?????
Well!
sniff, harumph
7:24 pm on November 1st, 2014
Unfair!…So let me get this straight…grump!…The facebookie guys get a new FOM and that guy gets a prize. But we here at the blog get Hamilton for another FREAKIN’ DAMN MONTH…grumble!..That guy is dead-ugly and I for one am sick and tired of looking at him…puke!spit!
7:28 pm on November 1st, 2014
Rio, before there were heated birdbaths the birds would get their feathers dirty, couldn’t keep the heat inside with the dirty feathers and would freeze to death.
7:32 pm on November 1st, 2014
T&G, I think I misspoke, you Poor offended little things. Actually it’s impossible to herd cats. I can just picture this.
7:34 pm on November 1st, 2014
Rio, I’m with you on the FOM. I want The Hot One up there.
MM Ummm You made that up, didn’t you?
Yeah, I think you made that up.
7:35 pm on November 1st, 2014
Rio – we admit to being a little tired of Hamilton too. Time for a new friend.

Mollypop’s Mom,
I have always loved that commercial. Those cat herders have a hard life!
8:11 pm on November 1st, 2014
I have an idea!
(Everybody stand back)!
Lets post our own FOC.
Every morning the first one to post on the blog gets to upload their own FOC who will be the official FOC for that day.
I know that HOH will probably be the FOC for most of the month but many of us will be able to get up early once in a while and beat her to it. Maybe.
We don’t need no stinkin’ Mike Baker!!!
8:11 pm on November 1st, 2014
Rio, Don’t you feel a little bit sorry for those poor little birdies?
8:12 pm on November 1st, 2014
MollysMaw!….What version of IE do you think ole SiberH was running anyways?….heh!heh!
8:14 pm on November 1st, 2014
Staff!…That is TOTALLY not fair for us Wild Wild West guys and you KNOW it…grump!….I vote NO!NO!NOT EVER! NO!
8:20 pm on November 1st, 2014
HOH–No, he didn’t say it, so I guess he gets points for honesty (but he’s still not getting reinstated).
Elliott TMC and B, M and L–It’s not so much pickled as resting (and in the case of the dehydrated fruit, getting plumped up) in a bath of rum and sweet wine. In a month it goes into my version of Jamaican black cake (mine’s brown, black syrup just turns the batter black and adds nothing to the flavor, so I use honey instead). Disturbingly, I have noticed that as the years pass I tend to make and give away more chunky apple-walnut, or apricot-almond cake and keep the Jamaican for myself…
Boo–I love the lion dog costume!
T and G and Mama–any chance of a photo of the made-over Gramp?
8:22 pm on November 1st, 2014
I’m following the frozen birdbath discussion with interest. Don’t the birds head south in areas where birdbaths freeze? (I guess not, if you’re worried about keeping their baths warm, but why not?)
8:24 pm on November 1st, 2014
I vote no also…unless Meashka could get up early and post.
So, what version of IE was I using? I don’t know.
You guys, the little birdies survived just fine before the white man stepped foot on this continent.
8:42 pm on November 1st, 2014
Siber-H and Diane, here in the Northeast we get a lot of hard freezes with nothing melting and no water for the birds. They can drink just fine with the snow but they can’t clean their feathers. Dirty feathers have splits in them and the bird can’t hold in their body heat and they freeze to death. That’s why we have heated birdbaths so they have some open water to take a bath in. Very important to their survival.
8:59 pm on November 1st, 2014
Diane, Some birds do not migrate south. We have cardinals, doves, juncos, black cap chickadees, sparrows, finches and a few robins. They all need water for survival.
9:02 pm on November 1st, 2014
Anyone know what color of bubble gum cigar is appropriate to pass around to announce the arrival of our new-to-us dog truck?
9:12 pm on November 1st, 2014
Birds!…The smart ones fly south for the winter. The lazy over-fed, sauna bath ones stay up north and freeze to death…grunt!
Cigar!…New truck?…yeeep!
9:12 pm on November 1st, 2014
Thank you. Sincerely.
9:13 pm on November 1st, 2014
Thank you. Sincerely.

Thieves! YARK!
I was hoping Snowhook would have good luck today finding a dog truck.
9:30 pm on November 1st, 2014
Speechless!…AJ is almost speechless. It must be a great truck…heh!heh!
9:37 pm on November 1st, 2014
Yea for the new truck. We need details.
Rio, you are not a sensitive Pug! Birds need our care, too.
Night all.
9:44 pm on November 1st, 2014
After being lied to by one truck dealer our Lady and Giant found a dealer who wanted their business and cut them one hell of a deal. It is a used truck but with few miles on it and a warranty. It is a base model work truck but is an upgrade from our last dog truck. Get this—it starts when you turn the ignition! We only heard rumors that such trucks existed.
It is the perfect AJ color. It is dark, dark gray. Belle Starr says the paint job had the good sense to have some sparkle in it.
9:48 pm on November 1st, 2014
Picture of the truck on FB. Its beautiful! Blue Dodge Ram.
Wahoooooooooooo!
9:50 pm on November 1st, 2014
Grump!…Freakin’ facebookie…grump!
9:50 pm on November 1st, 2014
The Giant tried posting a photo of the truck on this here blog, but is being moderated.
9:51 pm on November 1st, 2014
Correction. It is a gray truck. Sorry.
But we will keep up the Waaaaahooooooooooooo.
9:52 pm on November 1st, 2014
Blue!…I would seriously doubt that truck is blue. But I do not trust the Thieves sense of color either – so who knows…grunt!
9:54 pm on November 1st, 2014
Test!

9:57 pm on November 1st, 2014
Woooo!!…Hoooooo!…A new truck and the Race is ON!…snort!
10:02 pm on November 1st, 2014

10:10 pm on November 1st, 2014
And now the Snowhook Team can get their food! Yippee!
10:27 pm on November 1st, 2014
Team!…And they can get to the race on time!…snort!…Not to mention all the good diverse training they will be able to do …chuffle! ….The old truck taking its last breath seemed like a very bad thing, but really it is a very good thing in disguise!…snort!
10:30 pm on November 1st, 2014
Nice truck!!
I am very happy for Snowhook.

10:31 pm on November 1st, 2014
I vote that we get a personalized license plate for the truck that says sparkle!
10:32 pm on November 1st, 2014
Gah!…I vote No!No!No Not Ever!…snort!
10:33 pm on November 1st, 2014
Vote!….Maybe one that says, “Plunder On!”…heh!heh!
10:34 pm on November 1st, 2014
No to sparkle? Humph. Dazzle it is, then.

Dear Wose, Zeus and I are sharing Mom’s lap as we cheered on our team together. I guess I have to admit that the Big Guy and I are friends. I know this news will make you happy, but truthfully, I am a little embarrassed.
10:49 pm on November 1st, 2014
Good and night to all youse.
11:13 pm on November 1st, 2014
Congratulations to Snowhook on the new truck. We are glad they did not go back to that nasty first dealer. spit.
Rio all you have been doing tonight is saying NO! to everything. I guess you are having baseball withdrawal and it is making you even more grumpy than usual. Well pfffft to you! I will post a blog FOC if I want to so THERE!
You have nothing to complain about. Not like ME. I have to contend with tiny little black fur balls in the spare bedroom. That is MY bedroom. And it is MY bed. Now I am not allowed in there and man am I p*ssed! grrrrr.
So far Staff and the Mr. haven’t dared bring those kittens out to face me. HA! But I saw them taking some of MY toys in there today. That Mr.Staff stays in there for hours. He says he is just watching TV. He says….
Grump the big one.
11:34 pm on November 1st, 2014
Oh for Pete’s sake. That blonde cat sure has her knickers in a twist. She has been hiding out in the closet on top of some yarn and when she comes out she sits with her back to us. She just started eating again yesterday.
I don’t know what to do with her, but those cute little kittens are not going back into the woods. I KNOW that. She is just going to have to get used to them.
Poor Alice.

11:41 pm on November 1st, 2014
Dawson has landed. Her iPad appears to be kaput but we have several of the younger generation to work on it tomorrow.
7:53 am on November 2nd, 2014
Oh, T.C.! Yes, I am so happy to hear that you and Zeusikov are taking steps toward a truce, even if it is an uneasy one. That big guy could be your bodyguard…making sure nothing bad happens to you! I am so happy!
WhoooooooooooooooooHoooooooooooo! There is a new truck parked in the Snowhook driveway, and it is the most beautiful truck I have ever seen! I’m twirling, and spinning, and doing the Snoopy dance, and twirling, and spinning, and doing the conga….twirling, and spinning…..ooops, now I am dizzy.
Belle Starr: There are some sparkles already in the paint you say? Then whoever painted that truck had you, you, you in mind!
I think the truck should have a license plate that says SPARKLE, too. But PLUNDER ON! would be great! I am sooo happy I could splort!!!!
Who’s a cute staff kitty?
