R.I.P.: Etta James

“They’ll be playing At Last as long as there are weddings,” Spence says.

“Wouldn’t mind going to a wedding today, actually,” says Admin.

“Got any invites?”

“No, for some reason.”

“You don’t remember that last one – that incident you had with the cake?”

“Could have happened to anybody.”

Welcome Jack, Coco & Dutchess, Rosco, Rylie, Matilda.

At my age i don’t get many wedding invitations any more. All my friends, their kids, and their grandkids are married. We’re waiting now for the great grandchildren to grow up.

Wedding coming up for me! Figuring out what to wear as the MOG. Turns out I also have to dress up for the rehearsal dinner.

Now, my dress up clothes consist of jeans and Big Dog sweatshirts with no drool on them. So this is difficult.

YSAS said, “Get a grip, Mom. Practice and act. Buy something that’s “girly”.) His word not mine. So last night I went shopping. On line of course, and I bought a sweater. To wear with no drooled on jeans. snicker 🙂

Have no idea what I’m going to do for shoes. YIKES, how does anyone do this!

Anyhoo, Admin’s incident with the cake is why no Newfs are invited to the wedding.

Good morning! Snowing here. Not sure about down the hill where the Royals are though.

Good morning! That song made us cry. Happy tears though.

It snowed!!!!! When we went to bed, all was normal. When we woke up, all was WHITE!,! It is beautiful (and fun).

Hi, guys! Had a couple of cool days here, but mid to high 70s today. We really wish we had at least cold days, even if we can’t get snow. Mom hasn’t worn a coat yet this winter.

Last night, Mom met Dad after work for dinner out and on the way home, Dad (usually the most Safety Sam of all) rear ended another guy at a red light. He was looking for his phone to call Mom in her car because she didn’t have her lights on. Minor damage to both vehicles, no one hurt but still an accident. He was not happy with himself. He HATES it when he does something he considers stupid.

But Mom saw it happen and it was truly a surreal moment. Totally in slow motion to her and saw Dad jerked forward in the truck when it struck the other vehicle. Thank Kat for seat belts and shoulder straps.

Anyhoo, Melanie, Mom recommends you look for dressy slacks that have an overlay that looks like a sheer skirt. Put a dressy top with it and blingy sandles and VOILA!! Very girly, but still comfy enough to enjoy the wedding. Both Dillards and Macy’s used to carry those types of pants. Or crepe slacks that are flowy like a skirt. Go ankle length or longer. You will look great!!

We’re pulling for the Patriots and San Franscisco this weekend.

Barb, can’t wait for the book to get here.

New blog project Get Melanie Dressed for the Wedding. All agents on high alert.

We are trying to imagine slacks with an overlay. A tutu? Mom is about as “girly” as Melanie, but she has to pull together an “interview outfit” for Monday. Businessy, not necessarily girly. On Sundays when mom is tempted to crawl back in bed instead of go to church she makes a deal with herself. Get up and get ready and you can wear your “dress” jeans. They are dark, dark and can kind of pass for slacks, so she doesn’t feel too dressed up, which, for some reason makes her anxious.

I just noticed that she is wearing them now. She is going to brunch with dad’s brothers, sisters, and dad to discuss Granny who is in late stage of Alzheimer’s. And now Grandpa who takes care of her has been diagnosed too. Oy vey.

Melanie, Mom is in totaly sympathy with you about not even knowing how to dress up for a wedding. Jeans and sweatshirts and t-shirts are all she ever wears. Mom will stay out of the advice on how to dress for the wedding except to say maybe jeans with a little bling on them.

Gus&BooBear, Glad your folks are okay. We all do something stupid once in awhile.

Macy, Mom may be knocking on your front door since you are having 80 degree highs.

Ok, guess our descriptive talents aren’t too good. After all WE never have to worry abouts pants or skirts or any such nonsense. The overlay on the pants drapes over the pants in such a way that it looks like a long skirt, not a tutu. But, crepey dressy pants would probably look more sleek.

Rio, we’ve been meaning to ask you. Does your friend buy the quilling paper already cut into bits, pieces and strips or does she have to do all that cutting before she even starts a project.

And Mom and Dad really believe in hard surface floors. Much easier to clean up a gacked up hairball!

  23. OleyHowlers
    11:48 am on January 21st, 2012

Melanie, Mom normally wears jeans or sweats, but she does have to work in an office that is thanfully “business casual”. For that, she wears dockers or, on cold days, these cool wool-like lined slacks from L.L. Bean.

But when she has to dress up for parties, fundraisers, dinners, etc., she wears these same go-to black dressy-type slacks. They are from Jones of NY, and are made of half-polyester, half something called veritose(???) and a bit of spandex. No, they do not look like spandex pants, which fluffy Mom could never wear. But they do look somewhat dressy, and they pair with any number of jackets or dressy sweaters so the look can change for each season. Those would look lovely for a wedding, she thinks, altho perhaps not in black. The best part is that people don’t even realize you are wearing the same thing for every occasion because of the change in jacket or top or sweater.

Macy: Sorry to hear the news about the grandparents. Alzheimer’s disease cuts off communication with our loved ones, leaving us feeling sad and helpless. A very difficult situation for all.

Riö, I envy your friend’s organized work area.

They have just begun to clear the roads here. Made for some interesting driving this morning. Zoë did the dump run and then went up to a store that has beef bones for dogs and got 9! Munching and crunching going on here.

After she got back I ventured out and did a post office run (we don’t seem to have the same problems as B & M) and then on to the country store. Got two limes for zest. ZoĂ«’s going to make Key Lime Pie without the crust. And a cucumber. We’ve been watching BBC series and I decided we needed some cucumber sandwiches when we watch tonight.

The coldest temperature ever recorded here is minus 51.2(C)degrees, minus 61(F)in January 1947. Today it is a balmy minus 2 (F) or about the same as Wasilla. The snow has been falling for 12 hours straight. Shoveling is required. The coldest temperature I’ve ever experienced here was in January 1996. Minus 47.6 (C) or minus 54 (F). I’m guessing I stayed indoors. The man in this house is coming up with these figures and giving me goosebumps.

Wasilla and Willow have two different types of weather. I’ve seen differences in temperature between the to by as much as 50 degrees—that always means the wind is howling like and Oley in Wasilla (about 40 minutes from Willow). Willow has similar temps to the interior of AK, but not quite as extreme and we enjoy the snow fall/percipitation of Anchorage.

Melanie: A friend of the Kennel once said: Her 8-5 is much different than her 5-8. The former often times involves high heels and dressing up and the later requires bunny boots and several layers that add more than 10 pounds. The last time I had to dress up for an event where my boss was being honored, I ended up in black dress pants like G&BB recommended, high heels and a borrowed cardigan that was embellished with bling. It hit the mark even though many women were dressed in gowns. Have fun dressing up—how often does one of your son’s get married—and be comfortable.

Oley, the Rob Lowe info. Movie is on Lifetime, called Drew Peterson: Untouchable. He says it’s the hardest role he has ever done, trying to capture the character and speech patterns of D P. At the brunch this morning (which turned out to be a discussion of funeral plans, including Grandpa’s, and he was at the table) mom mentioned that they had a fridge to sell or give away. The brothers and sisters tried to get dad to take it, but he said oh no mine is perfectly fine. When he got home, he found that his had croaked. Sooo, now mom and dad are cleaning out the extra fridge so somebody can take it to grandpa. We all agreed that it was a “God thing” that mom just happened to mention the fridge. Macy, talking about funeral plans while one of the subjects is sitting there seems a bit insensitive. Did he realize what they were discussing?

We found a recipe which Barb is loosely following, but winging it a little. Browned the short ribs on both sides, then added some red wine, soy sauce, tomato paste, onion, garlic, chopped carrot, salt pepper, dash of thyme and rosemary. Now it will cook in oven for about 3 hours. Will either make some egg noodles or cheddar polenta (if feeling a little more ambitious).

Barb is planning to get all cozy on the sofa with Rob Lowe at 7:00. Why would anyone want to be wife # 5, when 3 & 4 meet with suspicious ends? Duh!

Thanks for the info, Barb. We will be recording for later. Your short ribs sound yummy. Mom and Pop are doing a lot more cooking than usual these days. Not only was Grandpa aware, he was the one that called the meeting. He wanted to get everyone’s opinions re: burial vs. cremation. And dad had picked the location because we had a really good coupon, and mom lost it somewhere between the truck and the restaurant. She went to talk to the manager about it and his response was, “What if everyone told me they ‘had’ a coupon?” Then mom got all teary and told him why they were meeting. Someone else went to the back and told the REAL boss what was going on, and he said no problem. We think someone needs a refresher course in customer service if he is going to be in management.

Well, that was interesting – right after our last post we lost power for a minute and then cable, internet and phone were out. Tv just came back, so we checked internet and VIOLA! But still no phone. hmmmm.
Anyway – only 5 DAYS LEFT! Whoo hoooooo!!!!!

CL came in to the business today so Mama could leave early. She lives a lot closer to CLL, and doesn’t have to climb a BIG hill to get home.
So Mama got her coat, and then CL said she wanted to talk to her for a minute.
Mama thought, “ok, here it comes”.
But no – it was a different subject.
CL wants Mama to BUY the business.
    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHHHAAAAHAHAHAHAH

Macy, that manager needed a lesson on southern manners!

Oley, sounds like some mighty good smells coming from your kitchen today. Do you ever make polenta instead of pasta or mashed potatoes as a side? Barb loves it served like potatoes, then you can chill the leftovers. Slice it and fry like french toast for breakfast.

Outside chores are done. Time for a nice hot shower, then Barb is bringing out the fancy crystal, and having her sparkling cider.

Rio – gorgeous ferns! And what a beautiful little brother you have too! (tee hee)

Melanie – we love those blinged up shows! they are rather Ginger Rodgeresque.

Macy – That was a practical discussion that your Gramp called for. Its not easy, but its factual. Our Gramp sat Mama and Dad down a little while ago for the same discussion. All in all, we would rather know what he wants that have to worry about it later. And now Gramp knows what Mama and Dad want too – just in case, ya know?

More power to AJ. I remember 10 year olds at birthdays. Shudder …

Best one was I had taken 10 different lines of cords and attached them to the party favors. Then wound them thru the ENTIRE house. Up and down 3 sets of stairs. Through every room, under furniture. It was magnificent. When they came in, they had to find their name and then wind their cord up. That lasted 30 minutes. I then had 90 more minutes to go.

Rio, you are not the only one who has trouble eating because their teeth do meet neatly.

She says great clothing for all body types and modern enough so that you don’t feel dowdy but also don’t feel like you are trying to be 20 years old (sounds mighty old to me, being only 10 1/2 but go figure humans). If you search online you will find GREAT sales Mom says. Even good things from that Fisher person on eBay. Stir into boiling water and continue stiring about 5 minutes. Add a pat of butter and serve as a side like smashed potatoes. I put the extra in a rectangular glass container and chill. But a child doens’t have to have greatness as their destiny – maybe it is this little ones destiny just ot make her mother or a family member happy?

Macy’s Mom. What a hard question about the little girl with the kidney disease. I am trying to think of a reason why they won’t do it. Maybe they are worried that she wouldn’t take her meds regularly. Maybe they think a little child will get sick or infected too easily. (I know they told me to stay away from children especially for the first few months.) It seems to me that just the fact that she is a little slow should not make a difference.

I feel that the kidney was a miracle for me. I wouldn’t deny one to anyone who wanted one. There ought to be more of a reason than her intelligence though. Lots of slow people are quite able to understand what they need to do to keep themselves healthy.

It sounds like we are not getting the whole story.

    Tupper and Gilly,
I have noticed that tendency in doctors myself.
I no longer allow myself to trust them and whenever they try to change my medicine (I love Google) I research what they think I should take. There are several medicines that I refused to take before my transplant. One had the lovely side effect of increasing my creatinine reading, which is what they test in my blood to decide if I need to go on dialysis. It seemed to me that they were trying to make that happen.
I told the doctor exactly why I wasn’t taking that medicine. Was she sorry? Not noticeably. But she didn’t argue with me about it.
    Idiots.

Staff – yup, we have those arguments with doctors a lot! We have to see a few different docs, and each one seems to want a different med. So we do as you do – research, research, research. And we are always telling people to get second opinions and/or be their own advocate.
Doctors are only human – even if they might disagree.

    Ola! Chetthedog,
This question may be a little off-topic, In James Allen’s typical guide As a Male Thinketh, he compares everyday life to a garden and the internet marketing business of settling on the thoughts we believe as one thing like the practice of planting. What exhibits up in our lives is the result of what we plant in our minds, for this reason his title which of study course come from the well known Bible verse from the e book of Proverbs, “as a male thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
