“A giant of American music,” Admin says.

“I’m so glad we got to see him live a couple of times,” says Spence.

    Good morning everybody.

    Good morning Steve, and everyone.

When Mom got home last evening, she shut down all the computers as a very bad storm was about to hit. Then when Pop got home, Mom had to leave for one of those icky monthly meetings she must attend. So we never got back on the blog last night.

We are so sorry to hear Tenzing is feeling poorly. Add our prayers and Husky Hugs and kisses to the list going out for Tenzing.

Kirby, we didn’t realize your mom and dad are still without a water heater. O my how is she managing that ??? Our mom and pop would be nutz because for some crazy reason they seem to like hot showers. We don’t get it.

Good morning all. We love that kind of music. Makes Barb want to get up and start clogging. Like she could with her knees!

Hope everyone is safe after the bad weather last night. Our winds have subsided, but now it will be cold for the next 3 days. Tomorrow in the 50s. They said on the news last night that we were having a 50 degrees swing in temps, from 99 Sunday to 49 or lower tonight! Crazy!

Hi Steve, OleyHowlers, Wölfie and everyone.

Still here! The strawberries that I was able to mulch kept their soil around their root! That was after 2 inches of water.

Franklin to Tenzing: Got your back on that thermometer thing. I mean like I really got your back. Understand completely. Next time I’ll blur up and stand right behind you and just show my teeth. If I can’t get there back up against the wall.

Hugs and licks to Tenzing from the rest of us.

Down the hill with both cars today. Leaving off the Element for some body work and then an oil change. We’re going to see Dan too!

I am then going to plant seeds.

We are supposed to have a high of only 82 today. Thank Dog. And tonight it is going into the 50s, with only 70s tomorrow.

Our garden as of this morning:

Front row left to right: peas, lettuce, beans, beans
Back row left to right: tomatoes & peppers, potatoes, onions (not sure if you can see the onions)

    Hey there, everyone!

Doc Watson, a real guitar master, RIP.

Tenz, I am sending your two-legged prayers, hugs, and tummies. Hope you are feeling tip-top soon!

Wicked weather last night in Westchester, rain, hail, lightning bolts! Lightning bolts for me on Friday!

Just think Rose, you could have stood outside and saved a trip!

(Tell me I just didn’t write that) Good thoughts coming your way on Friday.

OleyHowlers, I have garden envy. Right now, my peonies have just started to bloom and I have some iris up. Lots of dandelions!

The Gala apple tree is doing well. The raspberries are beginning to spout some leaves and either the grape vine I planted has a beginning of a leaf or it’s got mold.

Looks like we’re out of the last freeze! Tomorrow is when our area starts planting.

I thought it was funny Melanie, and I bet Rose did too. She has a sense of humor. Good luck Rose on Friday.

Oley, garden looks beautiful! Looks like the peas are blooming. Only a few days from bloom to edible pods. I love those ladder trellis you have. Did you make those? We used tomato cages for the peas, but I like those better. Our beans are starting to bloom. Love fresh green beans, one of our favorites.

    Doc Watson was 89.

Jeeze- we steal a minute to catch up and the last thing we read is that gobble-de-gook entry from a spammer. For a minute we thought it was us not catching on.
Howlers – your garden is lovely. Ours still looks like a square mud puddle. Oh yeah, guess we gotta actually plant stuff. sigh

Barb – from where we stand, which is ankle height, your knees look like bees to us.

Our (lousy) neighbors lost another tree in last nights storm. Thankfully, this time it didn’t land on our house, fence or yard!

Mr.Staff and I saw him, with Merle, at the Winnepeg Folk Festival sometime in the 80’s.
Mr.Staff saw him in Cleveland Ohio in 1966. He drove up from Columbus. It was in a little club. He remembers two things about that night. The music was great and about 11:30 that night someone threw up over in the corner.

We hope Tenzing feels better soon. Mom’s first Siber also had an autoimmune disease but it was mild and didn’t shorten her life span. Molly is doing okay now, but her disease is serious enough it will shorten her life span.
Makes one wonder if there is something going on with Huskies and autoimmune disease.

We just watched Isaac Lamb’s proposal, and yes it is the best proposal ever! What is that guy going to do for the wedding, or the first anniversary? He has set the bar pretty darn high!

We just had a ritzy car parked out in front for about 5 minutes. Probably a city person who was looking at the house. I did my best to drive them away by jumping at the fence and yipping at them for the whole time they were out there! Barb was very happy with me.

Good morning, y’all! My boy just came over to help Mom and Dad with the laundry room stuff — especially the heavy lifting!

Howlers: Mom’s being a real trooper through this whole thing. Not complaining — much! Your garden looks great — if I liked veggies, I’d want one of those myself. Only problem is that your garden is about the size of our whole yard — and then where would I “go”?!

Pretzels!…I can’t believe there are still tubs of pretzels left out on the shelves!….gasp!….If you guys have never tasted Linda the Lurkers pretzels you are missing out on something really good!…snort!….That was the first thing my friend went for when the store opened…heh!

Rio, those pretzels sound so delish. Problem is: Mom says she won’t be able to resist and then poof goes her diet. We say so what.

Caw Caw !!! Just got a call that their pork will be arriving Friday. And our beef, beef, beef will also be ready sometime next week we think. We got our chickens last week. Woo Hoo! What a summer this will be!

  29. Siber-H

I’m buying pretzels soon, very soon.

  30. Barb & Maggie
    11:33 am on May 30th, 2012

Oley, We won’t have our new chickens till July or August. Are you getting them from a local supplier? How about your beef?

When you order your pork, how thick do you get the pork chops? We are doing 1 1/4″. Even thicker would be nice, but then they are too big for one serving.

  31. OleyHowlers
    11:41 am on May 30th, 2012

B&M, Our chickens come from a local supplier, Woodsong Hollow Farm. They are pasture-raised, with any additional food being organic. https://sites.google.com/a/woodsonghollow.com/woodsong-hollow-farm/our-products/chicken-1

Beef is from our very good friends. They are also pasture raised, no hormones, antibiotics, or the like. They are “finished” with grain. We split a 1/4 side with other friends last year, but ran out way too early. This year, we are getting the entire quarter. We get to tell the butcher how big/thick to make all our roasts and steaks.

As to the pork, we do not tell them thickness, but their chops are gigantically thick. We are guessing more than 1 1/4″. It looks like much more meat than it actually ends up though, because of the bone.

  32. Barb & Maggie
    12:10 pm on May 30th, 2012

Oley, Finishing with grain gives you a much better tasting beef. We tried a totally grass fed beef once and it was tough and gamey tasting. Probably healthier, but no one liked it.

The farm where you get the chickens looks really nice. We buy from a friend who just does a few dozen for folks like us. She buys an old fashioned breed that grows slower, but we like the stronger chicken taste, and they are humanely raised, which is important to Barb’s peeps. They are not strictly organic, but close.

  33. OleyHowlers
    12:27 pm on May 30th, 2012

Our friends who grow the steers did one only on grass last year, and kept it for themselves. They said the same thing about it: didn’t taste good and was stringy. They won’t do that again. Now they always finish on grain.

  34. Melanie
    12:51 pm on May 30th, 2012

Pastured chickens? I thought they didn’t eat grass.

Papi is beautiful, and looks like he was well behaved too. Love his picture.

Melanie, Chickens do eat grass, and just about everything else. If left outside, their diets will be about 20-30% grass. Barb gives them some fresh greens from the garden eveyrday to suppliment their diets. They love lettuce, spinach, kale, things like that. They are also carnivorous little suckers. I think we have discussed this before, but they are the most closely related living creature to T-Rex.

  38. BearSpiritDog

Looking at your wonderful garden, we are envious of the bounty of good things you will enjoy in the coming months.

Well, this is two days in a row that the weather people were correct. They did say we had a chance of thunderstorms, and we did. Nothing like yesterday though.

Of course, the downpour was right when I was going to the dump. I am soooo wet.

Patsy is not doing well in this weather. She is having hot flashes and pain. I couldn’t get her out for her dip last night and she had a terrible night. Washed her paws and tummy with cold water and alcohol (rub, not the kind you drink). She finally conked out around 1 am.

I got her out this morning and tonight. I am also increasing her gabapentin to another pill at night when the weather fronts are coming through. I know how she feels with these fronts. Owwww.

YSAS is doing Boardwalk Empire today. An extra role, not speaking. He’s an Irish bootlegger. snicker.

Bear, I was trying to get one finished for the Mercantile, but was too slow. I may have to make a second one because I like this one too much. I do have another laminated fabric that is a little quieter than this one and I bought the matching fabrics to make another bag, so maybe that one can go for Snowhook. Assuming I finish it.

I am still trying to bring this house into compliance with my building code since being away for the last year & 1/2.

It is HUGE and it is burning in the Gila Wilderness…the first official wilderness area ever established in the USA. It was lightening caused, but it was also caused by 100 years of mismanagement by the Forest Service…their fire supression policies. I am sorry for the Gila (that is what we call it here)

First Dad found strips of wood nailed to the original porch floor underneath all the particle board and linoleum to try to level the floor out. (The laundry room orginally was a porch, which was later enclosed to make a kitchen when the house was divided into two apartments. When it was turned back into one house the laundry room was born — that’s what happens when a house lives for nearly 125 years!)

Now Dad found a place in the corner where the original boards have totally rotted away — they just put plywood over the hole without fixing it! Mom and Dad are starting to think they need to get someone professional in here to take a look!

Oh, and the house is like an obstacle course. The washer, dryer and new water heater are all in the kitchen. The freezer and the old refrigerator are in the dining room, along with the hanging rack and all the other junk that’s usually in the laundry room. There’s hardly room for me to walk — and y’all know how little I am! It’s even harder for the “fluffy” ones!!! (Don’t tell them I called them that!)

We are going to watch the final Part 3 of Hatfields and McCoys tonight. It has been pretty good, but man, were those guys violent! All started over a Pug, I mean pig!

They had a lethal mix of moonshine, shotguns and testosterone! So far haven’t seen any women shooting anyone. Pondering…

KirbyT. Sorry to hear about your remodeling blues. Your folks may have to take a longer “vacation”.
Melanie: McKey is looking very stylish for his Irish bootlegger role.
Maps! I am going through dad’s collection of old maps. I wonder if anyone would be interested in paying a couple dollars per map to Snowhook for circa 1960-2000 maps. US Dept of the Interior Geographic Survey topographical, National Geographic and others yet to be uncovered. If there is any interest, I could catalogue them OR (maybe easier) you could let me know what area of the world or US you are interested and I could let you know if I have it. My email is on the yahoo email site, I believe.

Kirby: Oh, Boy. I’ve heard tales of this sort of thing…the homeowner sets out to repair one “small” area and first thing you know the whole house is being remodeled. Not to scare you or anything. Maybe you shouldn’t mention this to the folks. There may not be hot water in their future anytime soon.

Melanie: Patsy and Nana are on the same drugs. She says she understands.
Is this for Season 2? YSAS is getting to be a familiar face around the set of BE.

Barb&Magpie: Your account of The Hatfields and the McCoys reminds us of Justified in a different time.

We are sorry to hear Patsy is hurting. The past days’ heat was hard on us, especially Sasha. But now it is cooling down, so we feel tip-top.

If YSAS is a bootlegger, he can get Patsy the right kind of alcohol.

Oh my. There are a lot of maps left in that house. Even after A Catty Librarian’s husband went through them. And cousin Mike. Heh. Dad is a map-a-holic.

Rio, I give stuff I like, but I don’t give the FIRST ONE! Not the first potholder, or the first pillowcase or the first dog quilt. I have to have a sample! mutter mutter mutter…..sniff.

Speaking of firsts I saw 9 monarch butterflies in our yard for the first time ever today. WOW.

Masquers: I will sneak my address to you an who ever else may be interested because I may miss a request on the blog. dawson.j2@gmail.com.I have just been looking at the Gila Wilderness Area on a New Mexico map. And I was going to try to find Melanie’s or Spence’s place on the Massachusetts map. But, if I keep stopping to look at every place I will never get these maps in order.

Tomorrow should be a very good day for mom. She is getting her neck fixed, which involves burning some nerves in and around C4 and C5. Yay! It should bring her some relief.

The sentencing for the perp is June 6, and mom sent a “Victim’s Statement” to the DA today. In this letter, she wrote what she felt a fair punishment should be. (I guess the judge takes her thoughts into consideration,) Since he has small children, mom would like to see him get help so that he can be a better father.

She also said that we wanted restitution. We’ll see what happens….
