Q&A (More)

Belle Star and the Thieves asks:

You seem to write Chet with ease, yet what do you find challenging when writing Chet’s narration, unreliable or otherwise?

The answer to this one is that very luckily for me, Chet’s voice is always there for me. That said, writing is not easy work.

And: Chet and Bernie have left the valley for some cases. What other locations might we find them in the future?

I’ve been thinking of San Diego and the surrounding area. That’s where Chet and Bernie surfed, one of Chet’s favorite memories.

Hobbit asks: Do you dream about your characters in the process of writing them?

I wouldn’t call it dreaming, but I sometimes feel my mind working during sleep – mostly on plot issues.

Sadie is a fan of Chet and wonders what kind of chow he gets and if steak bites and Slim Jims are a part of everyday/every meal. She also feels that out of concern for the aquifer, baths should be optional and is pretty sure that Chet doesn’t get baths. Is that correct? A lot is riding on your answer.

Is it conceivable Sadie is a member of the nation within? If so, I’m not getting in the middle of this.

Sadie: Teddy asked me to pass this on back to you. As regards the answer to the first question, he would totally agree about the essentiality of steak bites and slim jims. He is particularly partial to baked chicken as well.

As regards baths, unfortunately he may have a different view. Baths (or more precisely showers) are tolerable (with enough chickens encouragement) but what he really likes is getting blown dry afterwards. He refers to this as “spa day” and really loves it. In winter, we have a walk in shower that we use and in summer we can bathe him outside using the hose, but whichever, the spa day that follows is just wonderful. Of course, when you wear a double fur coat 365 days a year, blow drying is quite essential.

W&T’s Paw: Sadie is happy to hear that. No steak bites today but she did get a can of tuna (which nicely hides her medicine). She also has pretty much stopped shedding which has been horrific this year making me vacuum every day. The shedding slowed just in time for her to start developing her winter coast in September. So I think she which dodge having a bath this summer.

I paid $550 for my pergola and another $600 for two guys to put it together. It provides a nice shaded room on my deck which the cats like a lot even though I really bought it for Sadie. Cats take over everything! It was so hot the other day that I tucked a cosmetic gel pack from the freezer under her collar. I also took another and rubbed it down her spine which not only felt good but may have provided her some relief from arthritis.

OFA: I understand perfectly how hard it is to write, talented or not.

Chet: We have a follow up question. Any chance you and Bernie will have a case in Alaska that will require a trip to the kennel for research? Asking for a friend…cough.

I think it was in the first C&B book that Chet was almost a passenger in a small plane headed for Alaska. I smiled so big when I got to that scene and was sorry it didn’t happen. But hope springs eternal and research is always a good idea regardless. I bet we can even round up a fat bike for winter biking if OFA insists on a daily bike ride although I think he will be too busy petting dogs, staying warm (I am thinking of you Wose) and having snowy adventures.
