Puts And Calls And Us

Bernie’s still sleeping. Late night at the Dry Gulch Steakhouse and Saloon, pretty much our go-to place for kicking back. Can’t miss it with that huge wooden cowboy out front. And the sight of that wooden cowboy all of a sudden, meaning I knew where I was! What a moment. But that’s in The Dog Who Knew Too Much. Last night was more normal. A dude in a checked jacket was talking about the economy, whatever that is. Turns out the price of copper – one of the easiest smells there is, some humans can even pick it up – is a real good indicator of what’s going to happen with the economy. And guess what. There’s such a thing as copper futures. Then came a bit of a surprise: the checked-jacket dude knew how to hook us up with some copper futures. Did Bernie reach for the check book? Yes. Lots of times he ends up patting his pockets and realizing he left the check book at home.

But not last night.

Welcome Lady, Bandit, Spanna, Molly.

Friend of the Month coming soon!

O no Bernie! You didn’t ! Your finances are such a mess.

Happy Birthday to our very bestest of horse friends, Sahadi fa-Shiek who turns 30 today !!!! He is the king of our farm, and we all love him and respect him. Long may he live.

    Happy Birthday Mr. Horse!

Bernie – You need to check with Barb and MagPie before you go writing those checks.

Good morning, Plunderers! I passed part of the last sleepless hours catching up on yesterday’s blog.

Barb & Maggie (& Stormy): Congrats on the freshly hatched goats! I was just remembering the honor I’ve had to be present at the birth of many of the pups in the kennel—I try to be with the new mama whenever possible. I’ve carried each of those pups in my coat or overalls from their first few days of life until they would no longer fit although I assume that might be a bit more difficult with a baby goat…

OleyHowlers: It is true—all but a few dogs will be away for the summer. Whitey-Lance and Orion along with a majority of the team will head to southeast Alaska to work for an outfitter on the glacier doing dog sled rides. It is the first time we’ve sent them to the glacier for the summer and it will be a long summer with out them at home. It is an opportunity though, to have their dog food paid for and save money for Iditarod.

Our retired dogs, Tenzing, Bridger and my old stray, Howard along with Luna and her dog Belle Starr will remain home. Garcia, a free spirited dog and Radley, a very shy pup will also spend the summer at home. A long summer indeed.

    Good morning, All,
We finally made it back from our trip which lasted longer than had been planned. It was great. I saw a lot of beautiful country and had some great food. I don’t usually get people food, but since I was on vacation, I got a few extras that didn’t hurt. I hit the jackpot one night when my dad met some friends at a Japanese restaurant. The owner greeted and seated us; and before the waiter arrived with the menus, the owner was back with a bowl of water and a big dish of steamed chicken and white rice for me. He said he knows how to feed dogs because he has three of them. Though I enjoyed the travel, I’m glad to be home where it’s cooler and my routine can get back to “normal”.

Mr. Tibbs!…Our wayward traveler!….snort! ….I like the hat!

Whitey!… I hope he doesn’t R-U-N-N-O-F-T while he’s away working on the glacier….yeep! …I hope he will write Rebecca and let her know how it’s going all summer long….grunt !

Oh, Bernie, why do you think you will have any better luck with copper futures than tin futures? Metal is metal!

Kim is on her way over to see the new babies. If you want to know how big they are, picture a skinny cat with long legs (and big, droopy rabbit ears). So cute!

Mom is home today (of course…its Shiek’s birthday!)
But she says she will be busy trying to finally get grass cut and gardens weeded, so we suspect we won’t be on the computer much. Then again, its gorgeous outside and we have a lot of work to do out there too. There is still manure the farmer put down that we are needing to spread better…he put it in heaps. Also, many critters trying to move into our turf this time of year. So much work, Dima got tired just thinking about it and had to take another nap.

Does anyone want to know the difference between a put and a call? Both are options – think of a “put” as putting it away from you. You are selling to option, at a future date and a future price because you think the price will go down. Think of a “call”, as calling it to you. So you are buying the right to purchase at a certain price in the future. In this case, the buyer thinks the price will go up.

    Morning everyone!
Barb – Mama wants to know if you and Maggie and the goats and chickens and all will come live with her when she earns/wins/inherits/finds her first million dollars. she is sure that with your help, it will become 2 million in no time. Without it, she would probably end up hehind Bernie in line at the pawnshop…
Bella – it will be sad to wave goodby to doggies for the summer, but we think they are going to have a grand time working and running. And when they come home, it will be hugs and wags and shouts of joy – kind of like kids coming home from summer camp.
Oley – our very best to your King of the Farm. In honor of his birthday, we will run around the backyard like crazy, pretending to herd his harem for him.
Tyb – Welcome home!!! We have missed your posts, and are happy to have you back – juanty hat and all. Are you gong to the “vedding” with Natasha? That hat would be just the ticket!
Hello Bee, Rio and MollyPop. Hope you are all having a good morning. (whispering – Mama supposedly doesn’t have to go to work until 4 this afternoon and she is just giddy with having time on her hands. She even promised to BRUSH us! Yippeeee!)

Copper Futures – a new one. Luckily Bernie left his checkbook at home. Thank Dog!
Working Dogs! Bella, I can imagine how very difficult it will be for you to parted from most of the team for the summer.
TYB returns from his road trip. Welcome back! You look very cool in that new hat.
Barb&Maggie: I’m confused. Don’t you want to sell when the price is high and buy when it’s down? I have no knowledge of these things.
O.Howlers: Wishing a very happy birthday to the esteemed Sahadi fa-Shiek.

    Happy 30th birthday Sahadi fa-Shiek!

    Welcome back Tyb!

I fear that Chet has indicated that Bernie had his check book on him when he met the checker-jacketed dude at the Dry Gulch (which another teasing tidbit tells us is in Dog Who apparently after Chet has been lost far from home).

I’m sending my check to Snowhook to help sponsor Orion.

  20. BearSpiritDog
    11:29 am on April 26th, 2011

B: Bernie reached for the checkbook – but was it there? Chet is saying how many times in the past he is patting an empty pocket. Let us hope this was one of those times when he left his checkbook at home!

Speaking of checkbooks – we are getting our’s out to sponsor Orion.

Happy Birthday Shiek! May you have many more! I know you are much loved.

TYB, Great to have you back with us and that is a cute photo. I’m glad you had a good trip.

Whitey-Lance, Orion, and the gang will have fun this summer pulling the tourists around on the glacier. The tourists will give them lots of attention, and be really impressed when they learn they are meeting real Iditarod dogs. I hope the outfitter knows to keep a close eye on Mr. Whitey-Lance.
It is hard for us Huskies to find fun things to do in the summer. I’d like to spend it on the glacier.
I know Rebecca and AJ will miss all of them a whole bunch.

I am mailing my check today to help sponsor Orion.

Happy Birthday Shiek! May you have many more (like Ben).

Bear, Yes you want to buy low, sell high. But with options you are betting on a future price. So if you think the price will go down, you sell it now (high price), and cover it later (at the lower price). If you bet wrong, you are out the price of the option.

If you think the price will go up, you cover it now (low price) and sell it later (at higher price). Again, if you are wrong, you are out the price of the option.

We are taking a short break from all of our outdoor chores. Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes for our head-man Shiek!
We are sending in some more $$ to help sponsor Orion too. Think we will use paypal, but not sure how to indicate its from the Plunderers, this way.
Siber, summer is pretty good here on the farm. We have a cave on the patio (under the o-so-big patio table) that is always cool, and our people sit around it and we have parties there every evening. We also have the barn which is super-huge bank barn and so always cool downstairs. And then there are all the ice creams…

Is fine day today, no? Sun is bright, birds singing. Natasha may vell have time for sun tan before vedding. Natasha looks very good vith suntan. Of course, is only gilding lily as Natasha is already very beautiful.
Dear spugnik Rio – ve vill have martinis and champange and of course the best vodka for the flight on Lear Jet. How could you even vonder about that. Ve vill also have lots of good things to eat, vith the jims that are slender, and jerking turkey and the balls of salmon.
Our passengers now are Sammie ( how could I forget my leetle Princess yesterday? Bad Natasha!) Macy, Katy, Volfie, Tyb, Rio. Ve have room for only 3 more. Ve vould especially like to invite Alice M.Johnson. Ve think she vould be ver good fashion commentator, and she vill especially like disguises. Anyvon else?
Please let us know so ve can have enough snacks for long flight.

Happy Birthday. Shiek! Horses are so pretty! Enjoy your day, big guy!

Bella, do you guys know the people who are going to be running your dogs? Mom would be so nervous sending her babies to someone else to care for them. Tell WL and Orion to behave and not run off!!

We will be sending our next check (for Orion this time) at the end of the week!

Melanie, we need our daily eagle picture! Maggie, can’t wait to see some baby goat pictures. Let us know when names are finally decided (we liked Thunder and Lighting…since Mama Goat is Stormy).

We don’t understand all this talk of wedding. Isn’t that about some rich person who gets all their money from taxpayers and doesn’t have to work? Why are all you guys so interested in that wedding?
We are still awaiting pics of chickens, goats, and eagles. Hope we didn’t miss the chickens.
Here is a picture of Shiek’s birthday “cake”. That guy sure is spoiled…we don’t get anything like this.

  36. Tyb
    2:33 pm on April 26th, 2011

Boy, did I jump into it blindly this time. Having been away for a while and never having been on one of the blog trips, I opted into this one thinking that perhaps Natasha was getting married. I didn’t realize that it was THE WEDDING she was talking about. Thanks Oley for straightening me out. If I’m committed so be it. If it not too late to change my mind and my seat can be filled, I’d just as soon wait for a smaller more intimate occasion. I really don’t like crowds and there will be big ones at the wedding.
Sorry. Next time I’ll look before I leap.

  38. Macy the Min-Pin
    3:06 pm on April 26th, 2011

Howlers, what is the “cake” made of. We have never prepared a cake for a horse before. In fact, I am pretty sure that I have never seen a horse in person. They seem very big and I am pretty small, so…

I am off to look for a hat. If I find one, I am hoping that Melanie can help me with the fitting.

Mom says that it would really be helpful if we four-leggeds around here could get a job and pay our own way. Sheesh, just being regal is work enough, just ask those folks in vedding country.

  39. Macy the Min-Pin

I forgot to add this picture.

  40. OleyHowlers
    3:13 pm on April 26th, 2011

Macy, tell us about that picture, which we really love.

Shiek’s “cake” is actually a chocolate donut, with chocolate frosting, and sprinkles (jimmies). Tradition has it that he gets a chocolate donut every birthday. So this being his 30th, it had to be special. His girl when he was a youngster started giving him chocolate donuts, and told my mom that when she acquired him. Since donuts didn’t seem too healthy for a horse, she reserved the treat for his birthday each year.

  41. Macy the Min-Pin

Does anyone know what weather we are expecting in the secret vedding place? I was just shopping at the most wonderful pet boutique online and I found a lovely faux fur white coat, with “diamond” trim. Too much?

I also found something that reminded me of someone. Good luck getting him into the bag!

  42. BearSpiritDog

Macy – You need to have a hat from Philip Treacy. It’s what all the Brits in-the-know wear.

Google ‘treacy hats kate’ and you’ll see he does hats for her and some talk about who will be wearing his hats for the wedding.

  53. Siber-H
    4:16 pm on April 26th, 2011

TYB, It is never to late to back out of going to the wedding. I am NOT going. The food sounds great but not enough to make up for the trip to the sunny beach and the crowds.

Macy, I vote for the yellow hat. It looks the most like what the British ladies wear to these occasions. That color would look great on you. The swoop hat is UGLY and the last hat looks like something out of an HP Lovecraft story.

Howlers, I don’t get the raw egg and I must ask mom why I don”t get the raw egg. As prescribed by the vet, I do get a fish oil capsule once a day. It is always followed with a treat so no problem.

Audrey will be seeing the vet this week about her torn ACL…I hope Chet lets us know.

Raw Eggs! O.Howlers, yes it was always an important part of our diet – served as a special treat – once a month or so (dad’s special recipe)

Mollypop? What is the name of that doctor you have mentioned in California? How can mom tell someone in an email how to find his website? tee hee Remember, don’t tell mom to make a link or anything technical like that.
Mom has a friend in Colorado Springs that we think would find his website helpful, and we want to tell her about it in an email that we will send her.

  62. Siber-H
    5:07 pm on April 26th, 2011

Yes, yes, yes, I agree, Stover, about hats encumbering a woman. Mom and I think they are useless and stupid. One does need to wear a hat in the sun in this climate to help protect against sunstroke, but the only hats mom ever wears are baseball caps. She says she probably looks just as dumb as the upper crust English ladies in their fancy hats, but, oh well.
Mom and Rio are two peas in a pod or whatever that saying is.

Some hats are very chic. For instance, those mysterious hats from back in the early forties. We see them in those old movies. Back then – even men wore hats.

Twice today I have hit submit and it wouldn’t post, so I hit the refresh button and it posted. Are strange things hapening to anyone else?

Mom says the baby goats oare very cute and she likes their names. I hope they grow up to be well adjusted adult goats. I am sure they will…Barb is giving them a good start in life.

Hey, y’all! I’m a little late on the survey, but I say go with the flowered hat, Macy! I think that one looks very festive, and since Liz is a hop, skip and a jump away from the Brits and she says that one, too, I’ve gotta figure she knows what she’s talking about!

Rio: I didn’t realize you’d gotten to meet the Big Guy!!!

Three Amigos!…. Wookie picked me up in his Wookiemobile one day and we drove out to where the Charming Mr. Abrahams said he would meet with us….snort!… We brought the “Blame It On Rio” hot wings with us just to make our favorite Author happy…heh!…All us guys had a little talk about who should get an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) this year…sniff!…Needless to say, the Charming Mr. Abrahams wasn’t going to play his hand on that deal. The whole meeting left me thinking we would have to find other ways to get an ARC of the next novel…grunt!

Molly!…We pushed our drinks out of the way before the photo was taken…snort!…How did you know we were drinking….heh! ….Wookie had a Martini, I had a big ole draft of cold beer and The Charming Mr. Abrahams had a glass of that wine he likes so much…grunt!….I had to pick up the tab and I tell you what, those guys drink expensive stuff….grumble!

Macy – the floral hat, most definetly – the Brits vill think you are von of themselves.
Barb – Vhat is rong vith balls of salmon? Is a fishy comment???
Your baby goats are most vonderful – such lovely ears. Almost like Borzoi ears. hmmmmm
Tyb, vorry not my friend, you vill have most vonderful time at big vedding. however, Natasha is voman of mystery – far too exciting to be married and tied down to von partner. It vill be many years before there is vedding in Natasha’s future. (Do you hear that, Ivan? So there!)
Supreme Commander Bee – ve vould love to have you come along to vedding. Ve vill not insist that you vear hat. You must vear disquise to fit in, but ve vill make sure hat is not involved.

If Whitey-Lance paid attention to such things, he would likely want to wander to vedding with Plunderers, but only if he could wear his red and white wandering jacket. Said jacket is likely to bring unwanted attention to any secret ops that are already in the works.

If anyone still requires a hat for the vedding, they can borrow my mushing hat (but I’ll need it back by next season). 🙂

I’ve been having problems posting, but I’ll try one last time. Mom wanted me to let all you Kindle owners in on some big news. Her library got a release the other day saying that Amazon has decided to play nicely with libraries after all! Plans are in the works to let Kindle users “check out” e-books from libraries. Not sure when — the release just said “later this year.”

    Good night, y’all!
