Puppy Mills
“Sharon Peters has a good piece in USA Today on puppy mills and the emotional damage they do,” says Spence.
“How about we link to it?” says Admin.
“Done!” says Spence. “Now let’s get the pumpkins set up on the front porch. Unless you haven’t had your last ocean swim of the season yet. I know you have rules on this kind of thing.”
“I’m thinking one more swim,” says Admin. “But only on a sunny day.”
“So the pumpkins wait?”
“They won’t mind.”

I will not be reading about the puppy mills. I have a very hard time with that. There was one in a town near us. It was horrible and discovered by children playing. They were closed down.
The swim in the ocean sounds good. Today is supposed to be warm again!
Thanks for the party (Great Idea, Riö). Lovely food, lovely friends, singing and twirling. Sorry to hear about Alice though.
So is there like a Boxing Day after Golinka Day? Any food left?
9:09 am on October 11th, 2011
I love swimming in a pool but swimming in an ocean is difficult. But enjoy Admin. Wonder if the pumpkins will be carved.
Good morning Melanie and all.
9:25 am on October 11th, 2011
Pumpkins!…. What my friend says she loved about New England in the Fall almost as much as the beautiful colors, were the great Pumpkin Patches….snort!….Pumpkins! Pumpkins! Pumpkins!….heh!
Swimming!…. Aren’t there sharks in the ocean? ….yeep!….Be careful Admin. You need all your fingers and toes to type you know!….snort!
9:27 am on October 11th, 2011
Good morning. We will try to read the article, but like Melanie, we find the subject very upsetting. We see ads in the local classified all the time for someone listing multiple breeds, and we just know they are puppy mills. Wish the newspapers had rules about that.
9:33 am on October 11th, 2011
Good morning all! Mom says that most of her cranky body parts are working right now, so she better get to school before a knee blows or something. Later dudes and dudettes.
9:35 am on October 11th, 2011
Party!….What a great party last night….heh!…Youse guys made it all the way to Page 4 of the blog!….Wooooo!…. My head was compared to a flat tire and Alice had to help clean up!…snort!
9:52 am on October 11th, 2011
Sorry that I had to miss the great party, but I had to stay home with my girl. She’s leaving for that college place tomorrow and I get to go there in two weeks. It will be Parents Weekend and dogs get to sleep in the dorms. I can’t wait.
10:08 am on October 11th, 2011
I came out of a puppymill as did my brother Buddy. Mom works with Puppymill Rescue and they saved both of us. Buddy was older when he was rescued and he still gets scared, but we have a good life now.
We know the articles can be upsetting for people who love members of our nation, but please don’t ignore the situation. Bad things continue when good people don’t take action (someone famous said something like this).

Wolfie: Your pizza was delish sorry you ended up in Chicago. You missed a great party.
Sammy that will be something – sleeping in the dorm. Fun for you and your girl!
B: Everyone loved your pies. I had some of each, but my favorite was the chocolate cream.
We, too, will not be reading about the puppy mills. We know what goes on at those horrible places and cannot bear to hear more details. Cowards? Perhaps.
Rio: We have the Twilight Zone, the Darkside. What did we decide is next? The Even Darkerside and The Darkest Side? We should have a couple more on hand – maybe even a 5h for those rare times we go over 200. What do you guys think?
10:45 am on October 11th, 2011
P.S. We finished White Wings yesterday. It soon will be winging its way across the country to MollyPop. Dawson, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful book!
10:47 am on October 11th, 2011
Sides!…. I believe we have The Twilight Zone then The Darkside and then The Even Darker Side and then The Pitch Black Side, which is where you guys landed last night…heh!… Finally there is The Black Hole because nobody has ever been too or come back from The Black Hole….heh!
10:48 am on October 11th, 2011
Bear: Chocolate cream pie is my favorite also.
Sam: Have fun at college!
10:54 am on October 11th, 2011
Two things. Dan is having a hard time right now. He is 82 and his memory and health are not what he would like. If those of you who read “White Wings” would write him an email about his book, I’ll print them out for him so he has then. Please use our SSD address.
Thank you . . .

Phooey! Alice got to go to the party, and we all know what a bad kitty she is. Here all we did was try to help Mama get rid of some of the clutter in the house, and do we get gratitude? Do we get a “good job”? Do we get kitty yummies? NO! We get banished to the laundry room while everyone else gets to go to the party! And have STEAKS!
She even took those dam Corgis. THEY get to have salmon bonbons. THEY get to have pizza and pie and chili fritos and jerky. And what do WE get? We get to sit in the laundry room and wait for mousies.
Its not fair, I tell ya. Those dam Corgis even got to SING! And we all know that Basil and I are the best (translation:loudest) singers on the whole blog!
Someone call the SPCK!
11:23 am on October 11th, 2011
Hey! Macy finally got some rain!! Of course, it comes during baseball games.
The Creator does have a sense of humor, no?
11:43 am on October 11th, 2011
Melanie: Check your SDD!
11:52 am on October 11th, 2011
No, no, no. Not a puppy mills kind of day. No way. Not today. No.
Pumpkins and oceans: I vote for throwing the pumpkins in the ocean and going swimming (on a sunny day).
It’s a wondering if there are any stray bags of chili fritos laying around kind of day.
11:54 am on October 11th, 2011
Basil & Sage: Yes, He does seem have a sense of humor..considering all those alien types that came to the art show this weekend. Thankfully, your mama has an Indomitable Spirit. Don’t feel bad about the party. I didn’t get to go either. Something about “keeping the racoons away”.
12:18 pm on October 11th, 2011
YEEP!…..Alton Brown is going to be in Denver this month at the Tattered Cover bookstore….yeeep!…My friend would love to go, but it is on a work-day and you have to buy his expensive book to even maybe possibly get a place in line to have it autographed….grump!
12:30 pm on October 11th, 2011
Howdy Ho Plunderers!
We just read thru all of your blogging thru the Golinka Day party. What a great time you all were having after Mom made us come home. Did anyone try her homemade PA Dutch corn pie?
Dawson, you’re not going to believe this, but our Pop had on the exact same t-shirt as you last night. Too bad youse guys didn’t see each other at the party.
Puppy mills…not a good subject around here so we’ll skip that.
12:36 pm on October 11th, 2011
Tee-Shirt!… I’m thinking that Tee-shirt would be a big seller on the MMCS page…heh!
12:48 pm on October 11th, 2011
Pop’s shirt is way worn out!
12:51 pm on October 11th, 2011
Gah!…Not “his” own personal shirt you dork!…snort!… Brand new shirts with that design. Never – mind!…grunt!
1:02 pm on October 11th, 2011
O.Howlers: As Rio says, those Columbus T-shirts your pop and Dawson were wearing last night would indeed be great to have for sale at our store. Hmmm… I wonder how we could do this. The homemade PADutch Corn pie was soooo good it was devoured almost immediately. I was barely able to get a bite before it was gone.
Rio: Thanks for the update on the Dark-Side terminology. The Pitch Black Side is scary enough, but the Black Hole – brrrrrr!
1:04 pm on October 11th, 2011
You would have to get a copyright from the designer of that t-shirt.
1:05 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rio – that shirt is a very popular one at many Native events. The other one that gets a lot of attention calls for “Retroactive Immigration Laws”
Hey – have you all see this?
http://www.kittendales.com/Kittendales/Kittendales_Calendar.html
Wonder how AJ would feel about taking his shirt off in the middle of an Alaskan winter. We would be willing to ship Basil and Sage up there if it would help the cause – just sayin’
1:25 pm on October 11th, 2011
Melanie, tell us if you received Mom’s email. She hit send but doesn’t see it in her Sent Mail folder. She never sent from the iPaw before.
1:39 pm on October 11th, 2011
One of the best ways to put puppy mills out of business would be for people to stop buying puppies from pet stores.
Mom’s experience has been that pet stores lie through their teeth when you ask them where they get their puppies.
Sam, You are going to be the Princess of the dorm.
Alice, thanks for the great plane ride!
Fellow Sibers, I ate a large piece of your mom’s corn pie. Delish! I have a food hangover today.
1:42 pm on October 11th, 2011
I’m working with one of our English majors on her senior thesis and her topic is science in Victorian literature. She’s going to be working on Frankenstein (actually “Romantic” but usually called the first “science fiction novel”), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and a Sherlock Holmes mystery. It should be interesting.
2:18 pm on October 11th, 2011
Stover!…That does sound interesting….sniff!…Which Sherlock Holmes mystery will she be using?….snort!
Book!….We are currently reading a Memoir called Wait Till Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin….snort! …Normally, we do not read memoirs unless they are by Dan Montegue, but this one is also about baseball….heh!
2:59 pm on October 11th, 2011
Thanks OleyHowlers and BearSpiritDog, you have cheered him up today!
3:00 pm on October 11th, 2011
SiberH, That is good advice about not buying from pet stores, but you have to think about the mentality of the average person. About a 75 IQ, maybe. Barb says I am way smarter than most of the folks out there.
2 quickie stories – Barb was at the v-e-t-s and she told this guy his shitzu puppy was cute. He said, no it isn’t a Shitzu, it is a poodle-maltese cross. The vet was laughing about it, said people don’t even know what kind of dogs they have!
This lady that cut Barb’s hair a few years ago had an Italian Greyhound. She said it was a “show-quality” dog cuz she had gotten it from a pet store! Yeah, right!
3:00 pm on October 11th, 2011
T&G, Looked at the calendar, what about AJ and puppies? That could sell!
3:02 pm on October 11th, 2011
The NE Newf club we belong to won’t buy Newfoundlands from pet stores anymore. Used to until it was noticed that more and more Newfs were showing up. Since they stopped, you rarely see a Newfoundland in a pet store in our area.
3:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
A Mushing-dales calendare with AJ? (Snickering) Put me down for two. 🙂
Sam: Whitey-Lance wanted to come to the party last night with the hopes of seeing you, but he couldn’t decide what to wear. A harness to show his sled dog side, or a bow tie like Agent 00Wookie.
Melanie: I need to read White Wings, but once I do, count on an SDD from me for Dan.
T&G: What I’ve learned about going on a ride with the Plunderers: Buckle up, it’s the law.
3:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rio: I’m not sure which Sherlock Holmes she wants to work on but I’m suggesting A Study in Scarlet since that is when we’re introduced to him and his interest in science.
3:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
I might add that the alternative to buying a purebred puppy from a pet store is to buy one from a reputable breeder. Chances are it will cost less than buying one from a pet store. There is nothing wrong with wanting a purebred puppy.
Breed rescue groups hardly ever have purebred puppies up for adoption.
3:43 pm on October 11th, 2011
Tupper&Gilly: Quite a calendar!
I wonder what SnowHook will come up with for next year. Rebecca is beautiful and AJ is very handsome. Fine subjects for the calendar. I personally would love to see an enlarged photo of Rebecca’s avatar for one of the months. AJ and the sled dogs. Pictures of Rio and friend visiting for the Iditarod too. This is going to be an exciting time!
3:49 pm on October 11th, 2011
Photos!…heh!…No ones getting me in front of a camera while I am in Alaska, you can bet on that!…snort!…My friend says ixnay to the ameracay too!…sniff!
4:17 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rio: Funny you should mention not getting in front of a camera, because your handsome pug mug is at the top of my page right now. Your friend might be wearing so many layers when she comes north to Alaska that she will be unrecognizable in a photo.
BSD: You are too kind. I do need to start our calendar for next year. A friend of ours that has a fancy camera and self proclaimed kennel photographer said he would like to come out and shoot a bunch of pictures that we can use for whatever we want (calendars, blogs, books, etc).
4:22 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rebeccer!…He’s not going to be there when I am there, is he?Damned paparazzi!…grunt!
4:25 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rio: Here is a picture of our pre-race run we do the night before the start of the big race. We’ve taken Coach in the past, but now your friend will be in the sled and have the chance to ride the runners if she would like.

4:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rio: Our photographer friend will likely be at the Ceremonial Start of the race, but we will ask him not to snap any photos of your friend. Not to worry, not to worry. I will explain to him the need to keep a super secret spy and his friend’s identities super secret.
4:29 pm on October 11th, 2011
OOOOO Rio! I am so jealous that your friend will get to go on a sled ride. She deserves it though. Whooo EEEE that will be fun for her.
green, I am green with envy….
5:02 pm on October 11th, 2011
Staff: I think it’s the background of your avatar that is green. I saw your photo at the party yesterday, you look like a regular color to me. The offer is on the table if you want to join in the Iditarod fun!
5:06 pm on October 11th, 2011
Secret!…Damned Straight!…snort!…My friends identity must be kept secret. Someone might want to kidnap her to get to me or Wookie or the new Mission Control that SiberH is digging…grunt!
Runners!…Riding the Runners sounds like fun!…heh!
5:34 pm on October 11th, 2011
SnowBella! A beautiful picture!
Sammy: I thought I saw you this morning waiting in a car outside the Island Market. If not you, it must have been one of your close relatives. What a beautiful, beautiful dog! Hollywood here you come!
5:37 pm on October 11th, 2011
Turning green! It’s not easy being green . .
6:25 pm on October 11th, 2011
Siber, rescues around here get a lot of purebreds. They just don’t (mostly) have papers.
That picture of the pre-race run is beautiful. We 3 are green as well.
6:31 pm on October 11th, 2011
Mom has been thinking about going to the start of the Iditarod, but the airfares from Buffalo are a lot of money. Mom is retired and says she is at the mercy of this lousy economy. She’s not ready to give up on this – just waiting to see what will happen.
6:33 pm on October 11th, 2011
I don’t have papers – I ate mine when Mom filled them out and left them on the counter. Delicious, I’d say.
6:52 pm on October 11th, 2011
papers?? Ve don’t need no stinkink papers. Ve are Vorlds Best Undercover Spy. Ve say so, so must be true!
Rio- ve already have picture of you but ve vill find a vay to photograph your friend. Ve have idea she is true brain behind secret missions.
Hello my Siber-doggie. Have you missed your Natasha?
7:00 pm on October 11th, 2011
Fellow Sibers, Breed Rescues here also get a lot of purebreds, but never puppies.
Do your rescues get puppies? Husky rescue here gets asked on a regular basis if they get in purebred puppies, and the answer is always no. Young Sibers, yes, but puppies, no.
7:04 pm on October 11th, 2011
Oh dear, She is here.
Borzoi, I know where you have been…after helping to free the hikers in Iran you went on another secret spy mission that has just been made public on the news today.
7:07 pm on October 11th, 2011
Very rare for our rescue to get puppies. Thank Dog.
Hey for all you Kats! OTAS’sF won second prize at the Tewksbury, NJ Art Show!
It’s called “Mine”.

7:09 pm on October 11th, 2011
I also received permission to use a pen and ink of OTAS for the cards for the MM!
Howling Holidays! Now I just have to figure everything else out. Like what kind of paper to use, envelops, hmmm . . a trip to the store is in the making!
7:10 pm on October 11th, 2011
Hmmm. Not a picture of him, one of his pictures. Not that he’s not worth a picture and card, I just think the dogs would be more appropriate.
7:12 pm on October 11th, 2011
Melanie: OTAS artwork is beautiful, and the title is great.
Natasha: I was hoping you’d make an appearance at the Golinka Day party last night, but I do understand the need to be mysterious.
Mollypop: If I achieve that pesky independent wealth that is still elusive, I’d spring for airfare for a Plunderer Convention. Until then…
7:17 pm on October 11th, 2011
Whitey-Lance, I would LOVE to see you in your rugged racing gear. Gr-woof! Oh yeah. Mom wants any young gentlemen who call on me or my girl to be “properly dressed.”. She embarrasses us all the time.
7:17 pm on October 11th, 2011
Melanie: OTAS’ picture is beautiful.
7:21 pm on October 11th, 2011
Hey, y’all! That Boy is still here. No one has called looking for him. Mom called the animal shelter yesterday, but it turns out the shelter is closed on Mondays. So she was going to call today to see if anyone was looking for a silly dog, but she got busy at work and forgot all about it. Or did she? Maybe she wants him to stay here with us! Sigh. It was raining last night and today, so my girl brought him inside because he was too silly to go in the shelter Dad had set up for him — in fact, he kept pulling the blanket out in the open so it was getting all wet. I don’t like being out in the rain at all — why is he such a silly dog?!
7:24 pm on October 11th, 2011
B. Stover: I came across this photo today of when Charlie was a pup. The ears haven’t changed.

7:26 pm on October 11th, 2011
Kirby, He sounds like a pretty intelligent dog to me, but I do want you to know that I am sympatizing with you.
7:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
KirbyT: I was going to ask about your new friend. Silly? No, I don’t think the dog that found his way inside on a rainy night was being silly. Some might call it working the system, but not silly.
Sam: My parents insisted on the same thing when I was dating, and heaven forbid if a young man thought it okay not to come to the door and introduce himself to my parents. Coach, trusted me, but if he heard that a young man was nervous to meet him he may have had some fun.
7:37 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rebecca: Mom’s dad still insists that her marriage isn’t official because Dad never asked him for her hand. Of course, Grandpa walked her down the aisle and “gave” her to Dad, so I’d say that’s pretty official!!!
7:37 pm on October 11th, 2011
That Charlie is a sweetie! Aj’s not bad either.
7:43 pm on October 11th, 2011
We were up way too late last night. But it was worth it to celebrate Golinka Day.
Signing off early to catch up on some episodes we missed – Bear
7:50 pm on October 11th, 2011
SnowBella: I love the picture of Charlie & AJ!
7:52 pm on October 11th, 2011
And OTAS’ Mine!
8:03 pm on October 11th, 2011
Wow. OTAS’s Fiance did a great job on the kitty kat. You can tell exactly what that kat is thinking. I would not get in that kats way. I think he has the Siber rules memorized.
I can’t believe there was an art work there that was better than this one…
8:05 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rebecca: Charlie is so cute and I love the way his hair sort of peaks up on the top of his head. Thanks for the picture.
8:11 pm on October 11th, 2011
Abbie: That is one of their Kats. It’s the only Kat I know that plays fetch. They will throw her mouse, she goes and gets it and brings it back, drops it at their feet and waits. That is better than our Pack!
8:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
KirbyT: It’s a fine line whether or not it’s official, but I think adding a floppy eared member to the family solidified the union and made it proper. Dogs have a power all their own. 🙂
I need to head into town to get another round of dog food. I sent a text to AJ, who is working in Anchorage today, letting him know as much. I also asked his thoughts on doing a beefcake calendar. Snort!
Abbie: I agree. How could “Mine” be topped?
8:42 pm on October 11th, 2011
Awwwww – what a baby puppy face! Charlie is pretty cute too. But why would AJ’s ears have changed? They look fine to us.
OTAS F is incredible! Obviously someone must have bribed the judges if she only came in 2nd. We would pick that painting even over that famous painting the “Bone of Lisa” that everyone talks about.(even if it is of a icky Kat)
8:50 pm on October 11th, 2011
Quick!… We are very busy watching the final episode of Breaking Bad right now, so I can’t type very much…snort!…The name of this episode is called Face Off…wheeze!…We think we know how Vince Gillians mind works so the title is very literal. Just whose face is the question….gah!
8:50 pm on October 11th, 2011
Hi all.
Melanie – I play fetch with little mousies. I came to my forever home knowing that trick and really surprised them. Mom’s glad I don’t try Alice’s bad kitty trick of escaping outside.
(whisper) Sending an email to Dan tomorrow.
“Mine” is an amazing drawing; she knows her Kat.
We’re enjoying all the photos lately, of nature and Royal Mum’s artwork and Snowhook.
8:54 pm on October 11th, 2011
T&G: I’ll let AJ know you think that his ears are just fine.
8:57 pm on October 11th, 2011
OMG!…heh!…I can’t wait till Clarkson sees this episode…snort!wheeze!
8:57 pm on October 11th, 2011
Rose: I have been practicing my catch a perp look all day. I think I might have it perfected. You might get the same look if you leave the keys in the lock while I’m there. Can I go to work with you while I’m there to sniff out ne’er-do-wells amongst your co-workers—it will be official business if anyone asks.
9:01 pm on October 11th, 2011
A little something for Rio and his friend…
9:14 pm on October 11th, 2011
OMG!…Nothing compares to Breaking Bad…snort!…The writing is impeccable. We have to re-watch the last three episodes to watch how it all came together under our very noses the first time without us knowing what was happening…heh!…Those are the best kind of stories with the best kind of writers…WOW!!
Start!…The start of the Iditarod!…WoooooWheeee!…snort!…It looks very very cold there….brrrrrr!
9:19 pm on October 11th, 2011
Kat!…I thought that was a photograph of a Kat….sneeze!… Is it a painting or what?…sniff!…It’s very impressive for a picture of a Kat….heh!
Game!…So who is watching the Tigers vs Rangers game with me tonight?….snort!
9:21 pm on October 11th, 2011
Riö, I did notice that one person’s coat is not zipped up . . .
I will let YSAS know what you said about “Breaking Bad”. Not sure when he’s going to watch it again. He’s working nights for the next 4 nights.
He started at 8 pm and will probably work 10 to 12 hours tonight.
Not sure if I’ll talk to him anytime soon!
AJ’s ears. . . snort!
Off to bed. Stayed up too late last night partying heartily!
TTFN
(Thanks Bluecat)

Just saw your last post Riö. That’s an oil painting she did for a workshop she was leading. She is totally cool. So’s the Kat
9:28 pm on October 11th, 2011
Painting!….Gee, I bet that is not a Paint By Numbers painting either….snort!…Pretty cool indeed!…heh!…Such talent amazes me…wuffle!
Ears!…What’s wrong with the Giants ears?…snuffle!
9:30 pm on October 11th, 2011
****WARNING SPOILER FOR BREAKING BAD*******
Rio,
You are right about the title of this episode of breaking bad. Heh.
After I read about it I knew this was not a show that I could ever ever ever watch. I am impressed with your ability to tolerate it. Even enjoy it. I am a wuss when it comes to this type of stuff.
But it sounds really exciting in a nasty sort of way.
Did you get that article about BB that I sent you the other day? If you didn’t read it then (and it sounds like you didn’t) go back and read it now….fascinating, even for someone who doesn’t watch the show.
9:30 pm on October 11th, 2011
Kirby – Mama and Dad still laugh about when he asked her father for her hand. Mama and her mother were in the other room where they could hear everything. Dad asked very politely and our Gramp TRIED TO TALK HIM OUT OF IT!!! Mama’s mother was beside herself as Gramp told Dad how headstrong, stubborn and moody Mama was. Thank dog Dad had already figured that part out – so he wasn’t scared off.
Whew! That was a close one.
9:34 pm on October 11th, 2011
Staff!…We were dying to read that article, but very glad we did not…heh!…The surprise after surprise after surprise was well worth the wait…snort!…Do you remember what day you posted that link. We want to read it now!…snuffle!

Holy Chemistry Bat Man! Here it is Rio….stuff to ponder until next season….

Rio, We thought it was a photo also and not a painting. It looks so real!
T & G, What a funny story about the proposal. Good thing he was determined and smart!
Night all.

Barb and Maggie – there are some days that Dad kind of wonders….
Bella – please check your SDD
10:03 pm on October 11th, 2011
Holy!…Chemistry!…snort!…Staff, that was an excellent article on the final episodes of the show….chuffle!…My flat head was spinning trying to figure out all the downfalls of what had happened after watching it tonight and the author of the article laid it out very nicely for me…heh!…Plus, he thought of a few things that I had not thought of yet. ….Zow!…Next season is going to be a real doo-zzzy!… I hope Bear and Clarkson can catch up by the time season 5 rolls around…sniff!
10:12 pm on October 11th, 2011
