Pub Date Tomorrow: To Fetch A Thief
So here’s an excerpt from To Fetch A Thief.
“Uncle Rio’s,” said Bernie, backing into a little parking space in one move, smooth and easy. Driving with Bernie: always a pleasure, unless the tools had to come out. “You’ll like this.”
I was liking it already. Me and Bernie together – what was not to like?
Uncle Rio’s was on a dark street not far from the fairgrounds. The only bright lights around were the top of the ferris wheel, spinning slowly in the night, and the neon signs in Uncle Rio’s window. It was a bar, of course: I can smell them from miles away, miles away being kind of far unless I’ve missed something. What do bars smell like? Stale beer, burned grease, puke. Hey! They go together! A strange thought, not my usual … I wondered …
And was still wondering when we went into Uncle Rio’s. It turned out to be one of those dark skinny joints, a long bar on one side, a row of tables on the other, a little dance floor at the end. No dancing happening at the moment, probably a good thing, since dancing sometimes gets me going. There was only one woman in the place, drinking down at the end of the bar. A few big guys sat by the beer taps, big guys with cut-off denim jackets, maybe bikers. The bartender serving them had a tattoo on the side of his face; a cigarette dangled from his mouth even though I was pretty sure there was no smoking in Valley bars. He looked at us, saw Bernie, and said, “You son of a bitch.”
The big guys turned and gave us tough-guy stares. The biggest said, “Want us to take care of this dude, Rio?”

Yes! Tomorrow we get Chet's third tale (no pun intended) and we can read it at whatever pace we want to.
I can't come up with a title for the fourth book. Could the project be collaborative among the plunderers? I think that would be fun.
4:19 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb is drawing a blank, too, but as I said yesterday, she is not overly creative.
We got side tracked last night, and ended up watch Hachi, A Dog's Tale on Hallmark channel. Did anyone else watch it? Barb often gets a little teary over movies, but she was blubbering like a baby over that one. The movie, with Richard Gere, is an American rendition of the true story of Hachiko, an Akita in Japan. The dog would meet his person at the train station every evening, and after he failed to return one day, due to his death, the dog continued to wait for hime every day for 9 years. They have a bronze statue of him at the train station, and Hachiko is the national symbol of loyality.
4:44 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb: I do not watch movies like that, I do not like them, Sam I am.
B.Stover: I've got some titles, but can't help think, they could get better by bouncing them off on other people.
I wonder if we could enter as a group?
Chet?
4:48 am on September 27th, 2010
B. – Right on! We Plunderers have proven ourselves to be very collaborative. That Quilt (a thing of beauty is a joy forever) is a perfect example. So is Mom's Bookworm game, which passed the 6 million mark last night. There will for sure be more collaboration needed on that game.
How fun it would be for us all together to come up with a name for the next book.
4:58 am on September 27th, 2010
Wha!?…Title Wimps!…snort!
5:11 am on September 27th, 2010
Mollypop's Bookworm game is over six million!! Wow!
Barb: I hope that your sister has a new hackerless email account. I was thinking about email messages from credit card companies and banks that the hackers could see. Hopefully she has notified everyone with a new address.
The SO of Melanie's OTAS finally has her post up yesterday at 4:25 PM.
Rio: We aren't wimps. It would be fun if the title of the fourth book had been created by the Plunderers.
5:18 am on September 27th, 2010
Stover!… You know how it will turn out….snort!…A few of us will suggest titles and others will sit around and say “Oh that’s a good one”… grunt! … I like the idea of a true Contest, but that’s just Me….wheeze!
5:28 am on September 27th, 2010
Bee, Barb's sister actually helped the hackers. They said they were hotmail and she needed to update her info, so she gave them everything they needed. Barb was surprised, because she is a sharp person. She is hoping she can get her contacts before everyting is closed out.
Melanie, What don't you like about that sort of movie? A little too sappy?
5:39 am on September 27th, 2010
Rio: To me someone saying, "Oh that is a good one" is a contribution. The reason for a contest would be for a prize but the prize for me in a collaboration would be to have the title created by the group.
5:45 am on September 27th, 2010
B. – Rio just wants to win the title-naming contest himself! Just him, it's all about him.
5:48 am on September 27th, 2010
Hey!
This isn't a new post – I've read this before already and I don't have a book yet! Spence! You are repeating yourself.
5:48 am on September 27th, 2010
Nope!… Not, my cup of tea….grunt!… We will see what further details Spencer gives us regarding the Contest…sniff!
5:49 am on September 27th, 2010
Molly!…Exactly!…snort!
5:56 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: I did see that movie a couple weeks ago – cried and whimpered throughout – that's why Melanie doesn't like to watch those kind of movies.
I've already got a couple ideas for titles and haven't even been trying yet. Okay, they are kinda dumb ideas, but nonetheless. I'm with Rio. How do you collaborate on a title? Everybody break up into groups of 3 or 4, each bring one word and then we'll put them together? Hmmmnnn.
5:57 am on September 27th, 2010
Plus, I like contests and prizes.
5:57 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb: Don't like to cry at animal movies. I am a softy. I am a "wimp".
Heck, there's a couple of Christmas commercials that can make me tear up.
5:57 am on September 27th, 2010
We would be in favor of collaboration, since we are not original enough to come up with a winner.
Dawson, you are right, it is a repeat, but last time there was a little more to it. A frindly, back slapping greeting, etc.
6:01 am on September 27th, 2010
Dawson!…Do you notice that it is the ones who say they cannot come up with a title who want to form a committee?? …grunt!
6:01 am on September 27th, 2010
We could have a different contest. The thing about a book title is that it's public and bouncing ideas around in the group makes it a group project; the Plunderers and Spence would get more publicity.
Hey, the mail truck just pulled up…maybe my copy came. He usually delivers by walking around….
6:08 am on September 27th, 2010
Publicitiy!….What do you mean exactly by publicity?… snort! ….If Spence says he wants it to be a Group Effort, then I will participate. … grunt!…But until then I am keeping my ideas to myself….grump!
6:19 am on September 27th, 2010
The mailman must have been delivering a package to one of my neighbors.
By "publicity" I suppose I'm thinking of a dustjacket to the fourth book that has the quilt on the back flap…and something about the Plunderers made the quilt for Chet and created the title to that volume. (Only an idea in my head. Spence et al are, of course, the final arbiters.)
Actually, we really don't know if there is a contest or a prize. Look closely at the title (question mark) and the emphasized (pink) sentence under yesterday's post.
6:20 am on September 27th, 2010
I have one idea for a title.
6:20 am on September 27th, 2010
Remember Admin said "Please, no entries yet…not yet." So no worries.
Were those guys in the bar saying, "Want us to take care of this dude, Rio?" Rockie and his secret agent squirrels?
6:21 am on September 27th, 2010
Bee, Don't tell our little Pug. Yeep!
6:26 am on September 27th, 2010
B. Stover: Just whisper that title in my ear. 🙂
6:29 am on September 27th, 2010
B. Stover: Maybe that post man will return today. I'm hopeful to receive my book today. I will collaborate, if forced.
6:32 am on September 27th, 2010
I thought I could shame Rio into collaborating by saying he wanted it all for himself – but hah! He agreed with me! Well, that certainly didn't work.
6:32 am on September 27th, 2010
Raining here after months of nothing. The dogs are in the "den" covering all the sofas, floors. Quiet. . .
I feel like I should wake them up just to bother them. .
6:36 am on September 27th, 2010
Melanie: Ever heard the saying, "let sleeping dogs lie"?
Mollypop: Should've known better. There is no shame…in Rio.
6:36 am on September 27th, 2010
Oh yeah,
Zoë is upset with me because I have not finished T-FAT. I am a very fast reader, BUT I'M GOING AS SLOW AS I CAN. Also I won't read when I'm tired, because I don't want to miss anything.
I think she's going to have Patsy come in at night and steal it.
I'm up to Chapter 16. There are many things I want to say . . .
6:45 am on September 27th, 2010
Tomorrow!!! I pre-ordered TFAT from B&N (as bluecat suggested months ago), and had it come into the store, but since Amazon is getting it here early to some people, maybe I will do that next time.
Barb, Thanks for the email warning yesterday. I had heard of people trying that scam over the telephone, but now it is showing up in our email.
6:53 am on September 27th, 2010
Alice Johnson hissed at me! A kay aye tee. She's my idol and I'm trying to learn princessy things from her. Tail flourishes and full elegance posture. I got hissed at.
I guess I'll never understand Kats.
7:01 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb is on DL today. She did something to her back yesterday, and can hardly walk today. She is sort of bent over and moving like a very old person. Good excuse to sit and read. Now if TFAT would just arrive…..
7:08 am on September 27th, 2010
I'm going to agree with Rio that there are some of us that would simply say "That's a Good One" when it comes to thinking up a title for the new book. I can say that because I am one of those dogs that are not creative in a lot of areas, neither is my mom.
However, I am not saying that we should form a collaboration just because mom and I are not very creative. We are neutral on the subject, but we'll be one of those that say, "That's a Good One" if you need us to be.
Give some thought, though, if a collaborative effort would cause some hurt feelings.
7:31 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb is about half way throught The Fallen Man, and it is pretty good. Not as good as PA, but she is enjoying it.
Rio, Did you finish Perfect Crime? Barb is awaiting comments.
7:37 am on September 27th, 2010
MagPie: Make sure you take care of Barb. Perhaps fetch her some slippers or a martini or two.
7:39 am on September 27th, 2010
Siber-H, you are so sweet and nice, as always. I should have known that's what you would say. But you're right, a collaboation could possibly cause hurt feelings.
But not Rio's feelings! ha ha.
7:41 am on September 27th, 2010
In what way could a collaboration cause hurt feelings?
7:58 am on September 27th, 2010
Ditto to what Siber-H said re the contest!
7:59 am on September 27th, 2010
ooooo
A Martini!
YUM.

Oh and a tardy welcome to AGillustration!
I Hope you hang around. We like artists here.
AbbietheKitty
8:03 am on September 27th, 2010
If peoples' ideas are rejected is what I meant by hurt feelings. If would be a different type of collaborative effort than the quilt. Mom and I will be agreeable with whatever you guys want to do.
8:06 am on September 27th, 2010
My mother just dropped a bombshell on me..I am going to the groomers soon. Sam, HELP! I am going to be Wonder Fluffed.
8:10 am on September 27th, 2010
Alice is drinking early in the day, isn't she.
8:15 am on September 27th, 2010
Hick! Up!
8:16 am on September 27th, 2010
SiberH!… Hold onto your tail pal!…snort!… And you are right, everyone would hate me if we collaborated on a Title….grunt!
8:17 am on September 27th, 2010
Ah fluffing.
"It doesn't get any better than that."
8:17 am on September 27th, 2010
I will do my best to help Barb, and if I am in charge of the martini(s) it will definitely be shaken not stirred.
Melanie, we forgot to tell you – last week Kevin Tibbles did a piece on the night time news call "Making a Difference" They featured a woman who was working with school kids and doing recycling. They were reclaiming books, making compost from school lunches and lots more. You know, dumpster diving on a grand scale. Anyway, point of story – she was from Glen Ellyn, which reminded us of you. The Glen Ellyn part, not the dumpster diving part.
8:23 am on September 27th, 2010
Siber-H, you will be very (beautiful) handsome when you get back from the groomers. You know, all fluffy and stuff.
8:23 am on September 27th, 2010
BTW I have a (naturally) fluffed and bleached tail with lots of feathering. It is one of my best features, besides "the look".
AJ, you look pretty comfy on that sofa, and we really like your poem. Barb says she will have to wait a while before imbibing.
8:26 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb says I have to take a nap while she lays down on the sofa and rests her back, and reads a smidge of The Fallen Man.

8:30 am on September 27th, 2010
Siber-H: Here's hoping you don't come back looking like a Chow.
Alice: You look Marvelous!
MagPie: Definitely shaken! Me thinks the Pack would enjoy dumpster diving. . .
Riö: How could we hate you? Snide remarks would just add to the fun!
8:33 am on September 27th, 2010
Sam, thanks for the words of comfort, but I like being a dirty dog.
8:34 am on September 27th, 2010
CHOW!!!!
8:51 am on September 27th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: I hope your back feels better soon and: I like your tail. I leave you to figure out which remark goes to whom.
Chow! Good thing I have some food in front of me, I was starting to get crabby and was going to criticize Rio's title and he hasn't even posted one yet.
9:04 am on September 27th, 2010
I agree with Melanie that snide remarks (or any other kind of remark) would just add to the fun.
Dawson, you're so funny!
9:31 am on September 27th, 2010
"That's a Good One" would be an interesting title of a book. I'm not sure I'd vote for it though!
9:31 am on September 27th, 2010
Get it?
9:32 am on September 27th, 2010
Contest!… I wonder if Spence is going to let us submit more than one title?…snort!…You think he would want to see as many ideas as possible….snuffle!
9:37 am on September 27th, 2010
Pigs! As it turns out, the critter that tore up my front yard was not a wild boar, but our nasty neighbor's pet pit. (She has somewhere between 11 and 13)
About four years ago, the neighbor's dog came on to our property and my best friend Sam bit it. (Serves him right). Mom jumped in the car, took the Muffin to the emergency vet an hour away, paid for all the bills, brought over cookies and cases of canned dog food. THEN this lady made a big stink with Animal Control, Sam got arrested, there were fines and invisable fences and the whole ordeal cost mom many thousands of dollars.
All I gotta say is that Karma exists.
9:37 am on September 27th, 2010
(11 and 13 pet pigs, that is)
9:46 am on September 27th, 2010
Wolfie!…Are you going to make your neighbors pigs pay for the damage they did to your yard???…grunt! …I say take it out in Bacon!…sniff!
MagPie!… We are only about half way done with A Perfect Crime… snort!… We can’t tell if Rodger is insane or just too smart for his britches….grunt!…I’m starting to dislike Ned a lot – he cries too much…heh!
9:52 am on September 27th, 2010
Alice Johnson – you are stunning!!! I think I'm in love.
Rio – yes. I would like my neighbor to be responsible for the damage done by Porky. That darned pit tore up my entire front yard. It looks as if someone came by with a roto tiller. Now I have to nap on lumpy grass and dirt. Crap.
10:03 am on September 27th, 2010
I can understand having 10 pet Newfoundlands, but I would draw the line at more than one pet pig.
Though the Pack would enjoy it mightily.
10:19 am on September 27th, 2010
Wolfie, Didn't you say in a prior post that some one shot that pig?
Barb is moving around a little better, but it's probably just the drugs. I keep telling her to go to the chiropractor, but she wants to suffer.
Read on Rio, you will figure out Rodger.
10:26 am on September 27th, 2010
Nope. Dad wanted to, but mom said no.
10:35 am on September 27th, 2010
Now I remember, it was a skunk that got shot in Siber-H's neighbor's yard. Skunk and pig – not very close!
11:00 am on September 27th, 2010
Pigs!… I would make all 12 pigs pay big time!…snort!… Would good are pet pigs anyway?…snort!snort!
11:02 am on September 27th, 2010
Do you like bacon Rio?
11:05 am on September 27th, 2010
Some how I don't think that pet pigs get made into bacon. .
11:08 am on September 27th, 2010
Stover!… I L-O-V-E Bacon!…snort!…Do you have any???….wheeze!
11:10 am on September 27th, 2010
Actually I do have bacon in the frig. I don't always. I was thinking that Wolfie's neighbor (and what is the zoning law around there regarding pets?) may be inordinately fond of bacon rather than of pigs merely calling them "pets."
11:16 am on September 27th, 2010
Did anyone watch the new tv series The Event? The pilot was on last week but I didn't see it. It's scheduled to be repeated on SyFy and Bravo (don't know what's going on with that) and the first episode is tonight on–I think–NBC.
11:23 am on September 27th, 2010
Event!…We did – we watched it…snort!….It’s right up your alley Stover!…heh!…Someone said we will see how long we can stick with it because it might turn into a Fringe sort of thing where we get lost in the time lines … snort!
11:31 am on September 27th, 2010
Mom just finished reading the first chapter of the book – that had been posted a few days ago. She was ready to keep going but that was all there was. Bummer. But tomorrow her Kindle will have lots more for her to read.
11:32 am on September 27th, 2010
Thanks Rio. I'll watch both the pilot and the first episode tonight. I can let you know what I think of it if you want me to.
I just had a dialog box come up on my screen saying that my email account needed my username and password. I didn't fill it out but closed it. Then I clicked on the icon for my mail and it turned on as usual. Barb: Is that what happened to your sister? Yikes!
11:33 am on September 27th, 2010
Mollypop: Do you think that TFAT will be delivered on the Kindle one minute after midnight?
11:40 am on September 27th, 2010
I don't know when it will be delivered because I will be sleeping.
Maybe we should stay up tonight just to see. Will you be staying up?
11:48 am on September 27th, 2010
Mom is making a very good dinner. Red Hatteras wine, steamed spinach, nice chicken sausage from Sam's Dad's company, and most important, corn on the cob. Mom couldn't eat corn on the cob for a year or more. Now she has her nice new tooth and can't wait!
11:51 am on September 27th, 2010
Siber-H – we pre-ordered TFAT and Louise Penny's new one, both out on the 28th, and arrival date is estimated 10-2 from Amazon. Bluecat won't do that again. Next time we'll go to B&N, go directly to B&N, not passing go, etc.
Maybe we'll just have a few martinis till the books arrive…
11:55 am on September 27th, 2010
Martinis!…Where’s Wookie today?…snort!…When there is talk of Martinis he usually appears out of thin air!….grunt!
12:01 pm on September 27th, 2010
Mollypop: I will try to stay up but don't know if I can. Enjoy your lovely dinner.
12:02 pm on September 27th, 2010
Bee, From the way Sally described it, she received an email, supposedly from her email provider, saying she needed to update all her information or her account would be closed in 24 hours. So she filled in everything they asked for, including her password. Then they were able to go in and change her password to something new and she was blocked out. Then they sent that bogus letter saying she needed money to every person in her contacts, and if you responded it was going to them rather than my sister. If you said you would help they were going to tell you where to wire the money.
12:05 pm on September 27th, 2010
That dinner sounds yummy. We are having something really simple, so Barb doesn't have to stand in the kitchen very long.
No book delivery yet. Darn!
12:20 pm on September 27th, 2010
No book at the post office today. 🙁
12:21 pm on September 27th, 2010
MollyPop: I'm coming for dinner!
Bluecat: Did you get my message posted yesterday? Your message came through and thanks!
I just finished the part of T-FAT the posting came from!!!!
12:26 pm on September 27th, 2010
Did someone say martinis. What a stirring comment (sorry, I couldn't resist).
Rio and SiberH: I've already got my cap on for tonight's game. Wookie
12:51 pm on September 27th, 2010
Wookie!… He never says Die!!
1:02 pm on September 27th, 2010
Dawson, Thank you for the tail compliment. I know you were addressing me, since humans are sadly lacking in that department.
Barb says she is going to fix a cocktail and see if that helps her back. Couldn't hurt!
1:14 pm on September 27th, 2010
Wookie, I see that you are present. I never heard from you regarding The Fallen Man (or maybe missed it). Did you read that one? You are the one that introduced us to Tony Hillerman, so want your opinion. Will go bach and check out more. Our little library has a bunch of his books.
1:19 pm on September 27th, 2010
Thanks for the heads-up Bluecat. Siber-H will also be going to the bookstore next time.
1:27 pm on September 27th, 2010
I've got my cap on for tonight's game also. Jimenez is pitching and I want him to get his 20th win.
RIO!!! The powers that be are making some sort of weird mistake and putting the Rockies games on one of my tv channels. I'll get to see the game just like yesterday. Maybe they figure it is the end of the season so what the heck.
1:30 pm on September 27th, 2010
Dan is enjoying The Tiger.
He is doing well!
1:40 pm on September 27th, 2010

B&M made the 100!
I just missed
1:58 pm on September 27th, 2010
I find myself agreeing with Alice. Dogs love cat food and cat treats…not that I ever get any…too much protein the vets say.
2:38 pm on September 27th, 2010
Melanie, First time ever, and a total accident!
2:42 pm on September 27th, 2010
I really think pigs are only good for one thing. But then I've never lived with one.
We finished both Into the Dark and the first Louise Penny yesterday. Now we're starting Craig Johnson as recommended on the blog. The Sheriff is drinking and driving on the 3rd page. Hmmmm. Sounds like Alice's kind of guy.
3:34 pm on September 27th, 2010
SiberH!… Two games in a row!!! Way to go!…Let;s enjoy the last games of the season for the Rockies…sigh!…I bet Stover will be happy!..heh!
3:37 pm on September 27th, 2010
Rio and SH: I'm sorry if the Rockies don't make it to the playoffs for you….Really, your commentary does not bother me.
I'm watching the pilot of The Event. It is certainly not told in a linear way.
4:00 pm on September 27th, 2010
B., is tomorrow still Cahors day? I have my Dad's review right here so we can comment together. One of the 2 he bought he really loved and will buy again.
4:05 pm on September 27th, 2010
Sam, I think I look suspicious in the one at 6:41.
However in the earlier one, with the poetry, there I look regal.
Heh
It's all in the eyes.
Good luck to the Rockies.
4:06 pm on September 27th, 2010
Hi, Melanie. Yes, I got the message that you got my message. Thank . If it doesn't work for you, maybe it will for other family members, or even the Pack.
I want to be Alice Johnson when I grow up. She's regal.
4:09 pm on September 27th, 2010
Sam: Yes, tomorrow is Cahors day. I'll take notes also and post them.
4:16 pm on September 27th, 2010
Event!…If “The Event” starts in any way shape or form to look like “Lost”, we are out of there!…snort! … I feel sad tonight watching the Rockies, even though this is not the final, final game….sniffle!
4:17 pm on September 27th, 2010
Alice out-regals me in every way. Curses! Try this Alice:

You're right Rio. She did get a very early start on the Martinis. I wonder if she has given up catnip for Martinis.
Hi agillustration!

The Event is interesting. There are some flashbacks but it's not hard to follow. I've never seen Lost so I don't know about that comparison.
5:10 pm on September 27th, 2010
Hi agillustration: I bet Alice would love to be painted. Nice ring, by the way. Congratulations to you both.

Barb and Maggie. I had to check with my dad about The Fallen Man because he first read it back in 1996 when it was first published. It was actually one of his favorites; very well plotted and a great twist at the end. Also the introduction of a new character, Bernadette Manuelito, who became an even more important character in later books.
Rio, you really look sharp in a bow-tie. Wow!
Wookie
6:11 pm on September 27th, 2010
yeah, Rio. I think it is neat that some Aussies are coming here to play ball.
6:11 pm on September 27th, 2010

Wow that hooping that AG does is super cool. How do you make your own hoops? I wonder if there is someone in Billings who could teach me that? I would be the grooviest cat in the country.
6:48 pm on September 27th, 2010
AG does make that hooping look effortless.
My eyelids are closing. Good night.
7:26 pm on September 27th, 2010

Poor Andrea,
She has no idea the ego’s involved here.
Thanks Dawson, I saw that lovely ring. I love the swirl on the band. I looked at her blog yesterday but it wasn’t up yet.
Rio, you Dog you…looking good with your black tie.
10:55 pm on September 27th, 2010
Surely Melanie warned Andrea what could and would get started on this blog.
I know that Spence knows by now that every time he drops a little hint or a big hint about something that it will take off here.
