Pub Date!
We went down to Mexico, me and Bernie, and had some adventures. And other adventures not in Mexico. Some of it’s getting a little blurry – does that happen to you? – although not the Lola part. Anyway, it’s all in To Fetch A Thief. Peanut’s in there, too. No forgetting Peanut! Also we got shot at, me and Bernie. That always sticks in my mind.

I'm reading TFAT on my Kindle!!! Chet, you and Bernie are getting so famous….ShowBiz Buzz List!
An exciting time (and busy I'll bet). Well done Chet, Bernie, Spence and Admin.
5:00 am on September 28th, 2010
Hurrah for those who got the book today!
5:09 am on September 28th, 2010
HEY SPENCE!
Happy Publishing Day to you,
You, Chet and Bernie too.
Happy Publishing Day of the third,
Happy Publishing to you.
5:11 am on September 28th, 2010
We tried to see when the book would come to the Kindle. We fell asleep and woke up around 1 p.m., but no book. We went to bed and Mom woke up at 2:55. She thought the book would come after all the U.S. time zones had reached midnight so she wanted to wait 5 minutes more, but thankfully slept until morning instead. The book was there when we woke up.
That was all very disturbing to my good night's sleep.
Amazon sent the email at 3:21 a.m.
5:18 am on September 28th, 2010
Wow!…Is it Sept. 28th already?… heh! … Today will probably be a quiet day on the blog because everyone will be busy reading and laughing out loud!…snort!
5:27 am on September 28th, 2010
Hi, Rio. The sounds of silence, everybody but me reading TFAT. Sob.
Abbie The Kitty got in the last word yesterday, for Kats. That makes me feel better.
5:35 am on September 28th, 2010
BluKat!… I will be here all day…snort!… I will be awaiting comments on the story….heh!
6:01 am on September 28th, 2010
Bluecat: I'm not reading TFAT yet either. Not until the mail comes in anyway.
I'm singing Melanie's, "Happy Publishing Day to You", song.
6:13 am on September 28th, 2010
Mollypop: Amazon sent my email at 3:21 also. I woke up around 4:30 and checked to see if was there…….and it was! I only read the parts of the first chapter we had already had on the blog and went back to sleep.
Sorry Bluecat. When do you get your copy?
6:26 am on September 28th, 2010
Should we try to gently read the copy we ordered for a gift, or do we try to wait till our signed copy comes? It won't be shipped till 10/4 so we don't think we can wait. Quandary!
Here's an idea for the next book title – "Beginner's Guide to Tin Futures". Dontcha think that is sort of catchy?
6:31 am on September 28th, 2010
MagPie! Tin futures – ha ha. Don't you dare.
6:34 am on September 28th, 2010
I think that mentioning tin futures on this blog is like mentioning Macbeth on stage during rehearsals (of other plays).
Barb: Start reading! You won't damage that copy. The copy I'm getting today, hopefully, is also a gift but I'll still read it.
6:46 am on September 28th, 2010
Thanks, Barb and Maggie. Tin futures it is!
6:46 am on September 28th, 2010
Barb!…Not the Tins!…gulp!
6:48 am on September 28th, 2010
CRAP!
6:56 am on September 28th, 2010
To all who are not reading today, add us to your group. As we are meeting the super exciting SQ on Sunday, we will not have our copy until then.
Congrats on the tv blurb. I have never seen a book on there before, but then again I do not watch it often. Still, it felt like seeing a family member, very exciting. I think if we had just run across it randomly, we would have passed out from the excitement.
7:00 am on September 28th, 2010
Chet: DON'T YOU DARE!!!
7:01 am on September 28th, 2010
Oh, that's funny Tin Futures! Chet and Bernie could go to Bolivia or where ever that tin mine was . . . or even better Wall Street! I think Chet would have a wonderful time at the stock market! snicker. . .
MagPie! And Chet like it (even better Riö is in pain over it)
7:02 am on September 28th, 2010
Macy: Love the poem!
7:03 am on September 28th, 2010
I don't think that this needs a SPOILER ALERT Chapter 2, but I'm putting it anyway: Didn't we hear about Iggy and the bedroom slipper on the blog? I think that's so cool that Spence gives us part of what he's writing, possibly getting our reactions.
I've laughed out loud twice already.
7:07 am on September 28th, 2010
Min Pin!…Old Rio? …grunt!
Stover!…Yes we did read about Iggy and the slipper on this here blog…snort!…Which parts did you laugh out loud over??…heh!
7:09 am on September 28th, 2010
Thank you, Chet! We are honored.
Would someone please explain the tv blurb? We missed it.
Now Barb has to leave for awhile for lunch with a friend. Hopefully, the book will be here when she gets back. She is turning off the computer, so I will have a nice little nap and dream of bacon….or tin futures. Yikes, that might be more of a nighmare!
7:22 am on September 28th, 2010
"to a T" from the yourdictionary.com:
Also, to a turn. Perfectly, exactly right, as in The description fitted him to a T, or The roast was done to a turn. The first expression, dating from the late 1600s, may allude to the T-square, used for accurate drawing, but some think it refers to crossing one's T's. The variant alludes to meat being turned on a spit until it is cooked to the proper degree. The variant was first recorded in 1780.
just FYI . . .
Of course, if you're from Eastern MA it also mean the subway.
7:31 am on September 28th, 2010
Melanie!…What the hell are you talking about?…yeesh!
7:46 am on September 28th, 2010
Dilemma: Must go to town and shop . . . must stay home and read T-FAT
7:47 am on September 28th, 2010
Rio: SPOILER ALERT chapters one and two: When Chet starts scratching both his ear and his side at the same time after hearing "flea-bitten." (We had this on the blog also.) And when Bernie tells him "We need a case, big guy" and Chet sits on his foot and "waited for a case."
7:55 am on September 28th, 2010
SPOILER ALERT chapter three: Another LOL, a really good one: The trouble Chet had with cotton candy. I've had to stop reading because I can't stop laughing. I can just picture it. I love life from a dog's point of view.
8:04 am on September 28th, 2010
Oh Gosh,
I will have to read my readers copy along with you guys 'cause it is so fun doing it in a group! I don't get my signed copy till Spence is in the Southwest.
>^..^<
9:17 am on September 28th, 2010
The day we have all been waiting for is finally here! Congrats, Chet, Bernie, Spence and Admin. Can’t wait to get our copy.
8:25 am on September 28th, 2010
Happy Publishing Day!! We got TFAT at B&N! Mom may have sold the lady that checked her out on the whole series because she noticed the cover and said she is a dog person. Mom told her that this series is the best there is when it comes to dog books and mysteries. Chet is one of a kind!
The book cover is beautiful and soft. Mom warned me to not to eat while reading it. We are going to start reading now.
p.s. Chet, I completely understand about things starting to get a little blurry.
8:31 am on September 28th, 2010
Barb, There is a link underneath today's post to the tv blurb. Super cool! They mentioned TFAT.
9:25 am on September 28th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: No! I'm sure that Chet had forgotten about those tin futures until you had to remind him.
Lois: Even a tooth related title would be better than tin futures.
Siber H: Thanks for pointing out that link, I had missed it.
No TFAT yet: But I've printed out Chapter One and will start the inmates with that tomorrow, if time allows. And perhaps even if it doesn't.
9:36 am on September 28th, 2010
Stover!…There are alot more "little things" that you will just die laughing over…heh!
9:39 am on September 28th, 2010
Mom got her Kindle copy of TFAT and spent her lunch hour reading Chapters 1-7. It's really good so far…can't wait to continue this evening. Don't think her boss will let her read the rest of the afternoon. We think she will DVR any TV she wants to watch and read all evening!
The chapters we've read so far gave set up a great story…can't wait to get farther into it. We agree with B, no one tells the story like Chet!
But, Chet, NO TIN FUTURES (hush, Barb & Magpie!)
9:54 am on September 28th, 2010
SPOILER ALERT through Chapter six: Here are more LOL moments–Elephants could play the trumpet? Chet is trying hard not to think about pastrami after a deli is mentioned. The entire oil changing scene and then: "After Bernie and Charlie finished with their showers…." Oh my poor sides from laughing.
We had "Ankus" mentioned on the blog right?
I'm going to stop reading for a while.
9:59 am on September 28th, 2010
Wookie provided the work ankus as a word of the week a while back.
10:04 am on September 28th, 2010
The hardcopy arrived. The dust jacket feels velvety. Chets ears on the cover are black and on the back there is a raised paw with a white "sock." On the back of DOI is a tail that is part white and on THAT a nose part white. (I just noticed those two.)
10:23 am on September 28th, 2010
We won't be reading until the Library gets a copy. But don't stop posting on our account. I can't wait to read about the cotton candy…hmmm..time for lunch.
10:24 am on September 28th, 2010
we are reading and laughing…love the white paw on the back cover
Rio? Are you going to watch the Rockies game tonight or the Ken Burns baseball program on PBS? We have decided to watch the Rockies game and order the Baseball DVD from Amazon when it is released in the early part of Oct. if that is the only way we can see it. We don't have "on demand".
I am impressed with the number of fans at Coors Field considering that the Rockies don't have a chance now.
10:26 am on September 28th, 2010
From Bee's description of Chet's various colorings, it sounds like he is getting more than just a shampoo when he goes to the groomer. Maybe some highlights or lowlights, just a little to pick up his spirits.
Hey pug, just be honored to be in the poem. I could have made it Wookie, or Staff.
The spoiler alerts seem to be working. We just jump right over the rest of the post when we see one. Drat our library for not having all the best books.
10:40 am on September 28th, 2010
SH: Here is a website about the Tenth Inning program.
http://www.pbs.org/baseball-the-tenth-inning/?gcl…
PBS will be repeating the program here from 10PM to midnight. I'm sure it will be repeated by your PBS station also.
10:49 am on September 28th, 2010
I hate shopping.
Back to T-FAT!
B.Stover: I'm laughing again from what you are writing.
11:58 am on September 28th, 2010
The Book is out,
Excitement grows.
How does it end?
Old Rio knows!!
11:04 am on September 28th, 2010
The Event is On Demand.
11:14 am on September 28th, 2010
Gee!…Sounds like some of you guys are reading the book far too fast and possibly missing some good stuff….grunt! …. Seven Chapters in one lunch hour?? …Zow!
11:16 am on September 28th, 2010
24!….Chapters 24 – 32 are almost impossible to put down…snort!….Melanie is in for a surprise real soon!…heh!heh!
11:24 am on September 28th, 2010
It's here. It's here! Barb got back a few minutes ago and the package from B & N was on the front porch. Now the dilemma…maybe we will just read one chapter, and then finish the book Wookie recommended, so we can get it back to the library tomorrow.
Can we stop after just one? We will see.
Glad you all had fun with our book title idea. BBL
11:28 am on September 28th, 2010
SPOILER ALERT end of chapter six: I love this line–"Night was falling when we got home; that's the way humans put it, but to me night seems to rise up from the ground, the sky dimming last" (59).
I really am going to stop reading now. Savoring.
11:30 am on September 28th, 2010
We wonder if Chet's ear coloring was changed to accomodate casting for the movie of DOI….making the mismatch more subtle.
11:38 am on September 28th, 2010
Mom made herself stop in the middle of chapter 3. She felt she was reading too fast.
11:47 am on September 28th, 2010
Thank you Stover for the link. PBS is repeating it here also, but there is no way mom could stay up that late. I won't let her because she has to get up to get me to the dog park. I have figured out that she can order the entire Ken Burns series (the original) for me during early Oct. and I will get The Tenth Inning included in that series. They are selling it at half the price they have been asking for it these past ten years. Think of all the money I am saving her.
Mom is reading TFAT much slower than she normally reads a book. That is a huge compliment.
12:09 pm on September 28th, 2010
SiberH!…Maybe you will remember parts of it that way…heh!
12:40 pm on September 28th, 2010
There was a package at the post office, oh boy I got excited – but it was some stupid thing the man in this house ordered. Phooey. No book for me today. 🙂 Another day of anticipation.
1:14 pm on September 28th, 2010
Dawson, want to get a bowl of kibble and commiserate together?
Does your mail come by dogsled?
1:29 pm on September 28th, 2010
Macy MinPin: Kibble? I think not, although mother has been known to eat a bite or two of kibble (she's blind and someone left the cat snacks where the human snacks should go), I have not yet taken up the habit. If the mail came by dogsled it would've been here by now.
1:55 pm on September 28th, 2010
My copy should be waiting for me at home! Ooooh, and then we have therapy with the boys tonight. Curses!
1:57 pm on September 28th, 2010
Very well said, Dawson…about the mail coming by dogsled. I would have gotten the book to you quickly.
1:59 pm on September 28th, 2010
(Actually, mom has therapy with my boys tonight. I get to stay home in the air conditioned house.) If only I knew how to read books, and not just blogs. Sigh. It is 102 here. Blast.
Hey, we finally met the dastardly "wild boar". It was walking down Eagle Drive this morning. The "beast" is a homeless, sweet, pot bellied pig that is seriously underweight. It has a muddy nose and the poor thing is just trying to stay alive. Mom went home and brought him apples and carrots. Mean pig lady neighbor says it's not hers, but I think that mom has found a nice home for him/her.
2:19 pm on September 28th, 2010
Wolfie, Your mom is a kind person. Barb trys to do the same kind of thing when there is a creature in need. How can you turn your back?
Barb just read 2 chapters. She is trying to go slow, but it is difficult. Bee, you are right, the comment about waiting for the case was really funny.
2:22 pm on September 28th, 2010
The season premier of The Good Wife is on tonight.
2:25 pm on September 28th, 2010
Wölfie: Only your mom would find a house for a homeless pig!!! Therapy with the boys. . . I remember after the divorce and the move our times. YSAS would always talk for OTAS!
Too bad you can't read for your mom and then just catch her up!
2:27 pm on September 28th, 2010
BTW!!! I have finished . . . (wiping a tear from my face).
T-FAT is now in Zoë's hands. I told her she had to read fast so I can re-read it!
Chet: You were awesome! So was Bernie! And Peanut is grand in more ways than one!
2:44 pm on September 28th, 2010
Chet you hit another homerun! What a book. As mom says it stinks that it takes so long to write but only a day to read! Whens the next installment? Hurry we will soon be in withdrawal whatever that is…
Cash "Pretty Boy" Sanchez
2:45 pm on September 28th, 2010
Hey everybody! Melanie is right. TFAT is one of those rare books that makes you laugh out loud in places, but also makes you wipe away a tear or two — it has one of the more moving scenes I've read in awhile.
Chet: Is the same guy who recorded Dog On It going to record TFAT? I always like to listen to books I've enjoyed reading — it gives me a whole new appreciation for it!
2:51 pm on September 28th, 2010
Hi Kirby! I like your question. I haven't heard the book but OTAS really enjoyed it.
2:53 pm on September 28th, 2010
Gasp!…Melanie definitely didn’t savor the book, she Gobbled it up like a Pot-Bellied Pig would….grunt! …No offense to the Pig….sniff!
2:55 pm on September 28th, 2010
The answer to Kirby's question is yes and the audio cd is already available.
2:56 pm on September 28th, 2010
Kirby!…I always hear Kirby in my mind with a huge Southern Accent!…snort!
2:57 pm on September 28th, 2010
Audio!…Someone here thinks she needs to order that CD for slow times at the Busy Place….wha???
3:01 pm on September 28th, 2010
Melanie: The guy who read the first book — I just looked it up, his name is James Frangione — just captured the spirit of Chet. He also narrated THAT, which Mom's library doesn't have on CD, but she can download it to listen to on her MP3 player.
3:07 pm on September 28th, 2010
Riö!!! HA!
I got T-FAT on Saturday; it is now Tuesday!
I usually read a book in one day!
Restraint, that's what I've got! Restraint!
3:08 pm on September 28th, 2010
Thanks, Bee. I guess Mom will have to bug somebody at her library to get the CD.
And yes, Rio, I do have a HUGE Southern accent! The rest of my family is from various parts of the country, but I'm born and bred Southern! Mom has picked up just a little bit of an accent from being stationed in Tennessee and Georgia and now living in South Carolina. She didn't realize it until Grandpa laughed at her on the telephone one day and asked if Mom had listened to her answering machine. So she listened to her outgoing message — "We're not here rat now…." Of course, people down here still say, "You're not from around here, are you?" whenever she talks!
4:09 pm on September 28th, 2010
In the middle of Chapter 24! It’s WOWOWOWOWOWO!
3:28 pm on September 28th, 2010
Ahhhh!… Kirby, that makes it very clear to me now because when “Mom” was talking – especially during that Book Report – I definitely did not hear a clear Southern accent…snort!
3:30 pm on September 28th, 2010
Kirby!…heh! What did you think of towards the end of Chapter 25…snort!…I may have to check but I believe it's chapter 25…chorkel!
3:32 pm on September 28th, 2010
As the official "first reader" of TFAT, it is just so heart warming that everyone else on the blog is able to enjoy the pleasure of reading this terrific tale. It just doesn't get any better than that, does it Chet.
My dad bought an official copy to go with our ARC at B&N today. Gotta get those sales up for crashing the NYT best seller's list. Not signed yet, but we hope to be able to track SQ down somewhere when we are up in Vermont. We leave a week from Friday.
I'm amazed as how quickly people are reading. We took the savor approach here — actually spreading it out over just about a month. My dad would read one chapter a night out loud to my mom and me; it's kind of a tradition they have.
Well, happy reading everyone. I'm still rooting for the Rockies (and wearing my cap).
Wookie
3:35 pm on September 28th, 2010
SiberH! Wookie!… Caps On!….We will watch the first of the game and then switch to PBS for The Tenth Inning…snort!…Unless we are Wrong (hopefully!) we feel this documentary will be way more entertaining…sniff!…And that is truly a hard thing for us to say right now…sob!
3:40 pm on September 28th, 2010
Wookie!…I savored it too….sniffle!…The last chapters were page turners though and I know I will be re-reading it at some point. Such an awesome tail!…heh!…I sure hope you get to meet Ole Pointy Head himself! That would be awesome..snort!… It also will be a great opportunity to bug his briefcase too…heh!heh!
3:42 pm on September 28th, 2010
Ahhhhh! ….One of the Last Games of The Season is Starting right now!….Sob!
3:46 pm on September 28th, 2010
Hey, hey! Got the email from Amazon that my copy of THAT was shipped today. Eagerly awaiting its arrival with bated breath!
Hard to imagine a "stray" pig in the neighborhood.
WW: how nice that you are working to find a home for the oinker. I bet a certain pug may have a bacon storage facility that would be the perfect home.
My mom tells me that before my time when my 2-legged brother was just a young'un that she would take him to the "talking doctor" so he could talk about his feelings and get medicine to help his brain so he could learn in school. The talking doctor told my mom and bro that he may outgrow his ADD as he got older. Mom says he didn't really outgrow it, but he learned how to manage it and to recognize times when he needed to focus (and use learned behaviors to assist) and other times when it was okay to be a spaz monster.
3:47 pm on September 28th, 2010
It's TFAT. Oopsie. You know what I meant…
3:47 pm on September 28th, 2010
Riö, Wöökie and Siber-H: Good luck tonight!
3:49 pm on September 28th, 2010
Cap is on Rio, but we are having issues here…can't put the book down, want to watch the Rockies game, and want to see The Tenth Inning right now. We will see if the Rockies game wins out because SEEING the Rockies is such a novelty for us
"breaking rocks in the hot sun" cracks us up…reminds mom of a song that was before my time.
We do not understand how Staff and Wookie can have the self-control to take a long time to read the book.
3:50 pm on September 28th, 2010
Look!… Melanie gave us all Umlauts – except for SiberH!…snort!…How lucky is that???…snorkel!
3:53 pm on September 28th, 2010
Jasper: Neither of my guys ever outgrew their ADD and ADHD. Their wiring is just different. I do remember one "learned person" that said if YSAS was getting A's and B's with support then he could do B's and C's without. So I said, Yeah? Test him again. And guess what? He still had all the same wiring problems. Duh . .
3:55 pm on September 28th, 2010
Siber-H: I love the orange suits. I picture a long line of orange suits breaking rocks.
4:20 pm on September 28th, 2010
Wookie Or SiberH!…Please post updates about the game as we are watching The Tenth Inning right now…grunt!…Not my Vote..snuff!
4:33 pm on September 28th, 2010
Rio, We are giving up on the game and going back to the TFAT.
The Rockies are, shall we say, not doing very well, but what is even worse the announcers are blabbering away about hockey. I do not want to hear about hockey during a baseball game. They have really pissed me off.
I'll put the computer on the game and follow it that way while reading, so maybe I can do updates.
4:36 pm on September 28th, 2010
To Sibër-H, so you have your own umlaut.
Don't know if that will affect the game though.
4:37 pm on September 28th, 2010
SiberH!…hmmm, the regular announcers for the Rockies on Fox would never do that…grunt!… They are die hard fans…sniff!..Well, the Tenth Inning so far is all about Barry Bonds, so I am also dissappointed in what I am watching…snort!…I'm going to go watch the Rockies game….hmmmphf!…I love them not matter what!
4:46 pm on September 28th, 2010
Thank you Melanie. That is very sweet of you.
Rio, it is on the Fox Sports Rocky Mountain Channel that I am getting the Rockies games. Maybe these aren't the regular announcers.
sigh..I don't want to hear about Barry Bonds either.
4:58 pm on September 28th, 2010
SiberH!…Different Announcers! I've never heard my Rockies regular announcers talk about Hockey, and we have watched almost every game so far…heh!…Barry Bonds is not on my favorite list either…snort!…How dissapointing is that? I've waited along time for The Tenth Inning…grump!… It's in 2 parts so maybe the second part will be about otheplayers…good grief!
5:01 pm on September 28th, 2010
Grump!…Ken Burns is usually a very good historian…snort!…What the Hell Happened? I wonder if Barry paid him a fortune to do the story of his amazing drug induced life…heh!
5:03 pm on September 28th, 2010
Maybe Fox Sports made the announcers talk about hockey as a sort of promo for the hockey season. There was a guest on there that was a hockey coach (or something like that).
5:10 pm on September 28th, 2010
Switched…She switched back to Tenth Inning hoping to hell Barry was not the the subject anymore and finally he is NOT…snort!…It’s the Yankees! This is Ok and interesting! …heh!…We will switch back and forth I guess.
5:24 pm on September 28th, 2010
Go Yankees!
5:28 pm on September 28th, 2010
Hi Molly!
5:31 pm on September 28th, 2010
Tenth!….It is actually interesting now and we are going to keep watching and switching back to the Rockies off and on (who are losing right now..sob!sob!)…grunt!…I have been told tonight is an Early Night for bed because of the Busy Season Place…dammit!
5:47 pm on September 28th, 2010
Helton homered!!
5:51 pm on September 28th, 2010
Well….This is extremely interesting, but we (she) has to go to bed and of course the TV will be turned off…..sniff!crap!… I really want to see the end of the Game and the end of this Show…dammit!
5:51 pm on September 28th, 2010
For Mollie; The Yankees are going to be in the playoffs.
#100
5:52 pm on September 28th, 2010
nevermind..it was #101 hee hee
5:57 pm on September 28th, 2010
wAIT!….Is the game tied?????…grunt! …We were just about to turn it off!… OMG!!!
6:00 pm on September 28th, 2010
I went out to pee and when I came back the game was tied.
6:01 pm on September 28th, 2010
Mom says we're going to hit the sack early tonight — whatever that means. All I know is that it's been a busy day today, and I'm bushed! G'night y'all!
6:09 pm on September 28th, 2010

We are going to sleep soon too…all I have to do is get TFAT away from mom so she will go to bed at the normal time. I'll give her about 30 more minutes of reading time.
Good Night friends…Husky hugs to all

Rio: I just looked up the end of chapter 25 — are you referring to the thing that starts with a “g”? (I’m not going to say what it is so I don’t ruin it for anyone who isn’t there yet!)

Love Chet, and have to say that he is more himself with every book! This is the best. Read it in no time, and was sorry I finished. Have to learn to read slower!
Thanks for the addition of Peanut, the communication between Chet and her worked beautifully.
Don't stop–I expect and want many many more Chet n' Bernie books.
I'm counting on them!
