Shakelton made it. Scott did not. Shakelton’s journey across the Anarctica seas is one of the great survival stories of the frozen lands. Scott’s story is the tragedy of Anarctica He and his men were only 10 miles from food and supplies, but they could go no further. It is to Scott’s everlasting credit that he refused to use dogs on this expedition.

Riö: The WKC Dog Show came on here at 5pm/8pm EST. Not realizing it would be repeated again at 8 and probably again today, BSD was in a frenzy running from the kitchen to the tv. Heh. Quite amusing to watch.

My Giant gave me my feeling-good-in-no-time pills this morning and wouldn’t you know it, the dancing giraffe joined me for my mid-morning nap (not to be confused with my early morning or late morning naps).
Later today, AJ and my mama will truck the 20 hopefuls to race headquarters for the first round of vet checks. Once that is over, my mama will take off her coveralls where she will have fancy dress clothes underneath, and head to Anchorage for a meeting tonight. I hope she remembers to take her heels or she’ll be wearing bunny boots with her slacks.

Mama had to go to the human v e t this morning. Seems she doesn’t have a carful of tunnels after all. She has a “sin-drome”. And now her right hand and forearm are immobilized in a big ugly white thing that Gilly DOES NOT LIKE AT ALL. She keeps trying to chew it off Mama’s arm.
All we can figure is Mama must have done a really big, naughty sin to get a drome like this…
She says she may not be on the computer much since she can only use one hand. AND its not the hand that she is used to mousing with. Carp.

BSD – the white thingie is full time for at least a week. After that it might be ok to take it off for short breaks. But its gonna be part of life for 6 weeks.

It’s hard to computer, but the ipaw has always been a one finger keyboard. Whew.
We are worried about OFA – the Cape took a real blow from this past storm. We were buried in snow here, but it was powder and so didn’t take down trees and power lines. But the Cape got slammed with high tide flooding, ice, power outages and snow too. Hope there is a wood stove or other non electric heat source in addition to cuddling with Audrey and Pearl.
Mama can’t do much for cooking this week. Tonight was pizza. Wonder what tomorrow will bring. (Have we mentioned that Daddy and Gramp are hopeless – make that downright dangerous in the kitchen?)

What He’s Like:…snort!
The Pug is a gentle, sensitive, happy, outgoing, playful, loyal and deeply loving dog. He wants to be near you, to sit at your feet, to sleep on the couch with you or follow you from room to room. He prefers human friendship to all other kinds of companionship, and is a sweet, affectionate and warm companion. Even though he has a good bark, he doesn’t generally make a good watchdog because he is instantly welcoming and cheerful with visitors, and may not recognize a stranger or intruder. He is not a yappy dog, although he can be mischievous at times, and loves to clown and show off for people. He loves to be cuddled and petted, too, and needs a great deal of attention. He can become anxious or jealous if your attention is given to something other than him. He needs to be near people, and is not a dog who can be left alone or kenneled all day. He is very sensitive to cold and heat, and needs to be inside where the temperature can be controlled. He loves to lounge around the house and he sleeps a great deal, but he is not a truly lazy dog. He is rambunctious and always ready to play. He needs a walk every now and then. You should be careful not to exercise him too much or he will begin to wheeze. He gets along well with other pets. He has a special affection for children, and is gentle, patient and dependable with responsible young ones. He loves to eat! So you must be careful not to feed him too much, and help him get enough exercise, or else he will become fat. Because of his flat face, he wheezes, snores, snorts and sneezes. The wrinkles around his face need to be cleaned regularly. Even though he is eager to please you, he isn’t easy to train, because he can be easily bored by repetitious exercises and because he is very sensitive to harsh tones and commands. He wants to understand you, but sometimes he can’t, so you have to be gentle in your training methods with him. He can become stubborn and willful if you aren’t careful. He is an extremely high shedder, and so would not be a good pet if you dislike dog hair and vacuuming frequently.

It seems like there is never enough time these days. I’ve been balancing a full time job against training and all that is Iditarod. In one moment I’m a dirty musher out happy on the trails and the next I’m frantically putting on a suit to get to a meeting or managing a camp full of kids.
The point being is that there are moments when it’s just me in the kennel and I get to play with the odd assortment of dogs we have. The rescue that ambushes me for a hug and a scratch, the others who jump and run and the race team that is always waiting for my word.
I think to myself in this far too rare a moment as I look at these wonderful dogs that we are trully lucky to count the plunderers as out friends . I’m grateful that you make our dream of running dogs, of helping others and being able to run the trails of Alaska a reality for us.
I’ve shared this story with a few and maybe I’ve already shared it here but I think it relevent to the plunderers….
Last year was a tough year for us. We lost Younger and Rori all to quickly and their memory still remains with me. Despite having as many dogs as we have you grow attached to all and when they are suddenly taken from you it makes it all the more difficult….
At any rate, as I was travelling to Cripple last year during Iditarod it was cold and late at night. If memory serves it was -40 and around 3 am. Though that may be me making that part up.
Tired and sleep deprived I was worn out travelling to the remote check point and not particulary thinking of anything. And so when a movement beside me made me look over to discover a white dog running beside me it was no great suprise. Just a normal thing to happen. There was Younger running beside me as he always did. Reaching out to pet him he remained for a moment and then seemed to fade and fall behind me.
To my left, a movement became a brown little dog running beside me which also seemed natural in my sleep deprived state. Similiarly I reached out for this little dog for a moment and she also remained and then faded behind me. Both leaving a momentary presence letting me know they were ok.
Some time later after the race when this memory came back to me and the distict feeling these two left when they ran beside me still lingered with me I came to realize that though Younger and Rori were gone for now they were never far away.
And so I do my best to care for all these dogs in my stewardship now. Give them all that I can. And we couldn’t do that without you.

Junior could have done better at the vet checks today. He could have done worse. All in all, he did well for a first-timer. In this picture he is having his blood drawn. After the blood draw, he was lifted onto a table, placed on his side, and hooked up to the heart monitor. AJ usually helps with the blood draw and I help hold the dog during the heart monitoring, but not in Rio’s case. AJ held Rio and spoke soft words to him.
