Post Mortem

“How did everything go at the Oak Bluffs Library on the Vineyard?” Admin says.

“No one threw anything,” says Spence.

“Always a good sign,” Admin says, “but I happen to know they screened everyone at the door, confiscating a number of heirloom tomatoes. But onto two other things. One, did everyone notice the new background here at the blog? That’s because of The Sound and the Furry, coming Sept. 10. Second, here’s a great new video from Melanie, Plunderer extraordinaire.”

Gooood morning, everyone! Glad no UFOs at the library but be sure to save those heirloooom tomatoes for the seeds!

I’m laughing about the heirloom tomatoes. The background is fine but I still don’t like the print size or the margin size. To be able to type a comment I have it on 125% but to read the blog I have it on 100%. I don’t understand why this is necessary. Can’t the background be changed without affecting everything else?

    Good morning all.

OMD- Melanie. I watched again because I like it so much – was that a chipmunk racing off the stairs before the Newfs arrived?

Good morning all and happy weekend.

CHobbit: Need to tell you a wrong day story! We were on a loooog summer vacation trip in a schooool bus we’d made into a motorhome to drag the daddy dawg’s kids around the country. Late August and we found an upgraded tranny to install, 3 days. Suddenly, his daughter says school starts the next day and we have to get from Placerville, CA to San Diego by the next a.m.

We made it…barely. Dropped her off at school then went to set up RV. Two hours later, got a call from school, come get the angel, SHE’S 3 DAYS EARLY!

Spence: That’s a sneaky way to procure your lunch. I am happy that no one threw anything at you. I noticed the new background – after Rose pointed it out. Love it.

Melanie: Love the video, how could I not with all those stars of the screen, The River Bear Newfs! Your music is perfect. The best part is when they all first come lumbering into view. I don’t remember a Mr. McKey. Have I not been paying attention? Reading every other word then forgetting every 3rd word? Rose and all the Newfs look beautiful.

Melanie, Great video, love it. We did count and there seem to be 6 Newfs. We thought you were down to 5. Is Dawson onto something with the addition of Mr. McKey?

How do you get them dried off afterwards? Wet Newfs get musty smelling we have learned from experience.

Glad no one threw anything, Spence. That would be a terrible waste of an heirloom tomato!

    Morning all.
To answer a couple of questions on Melanie’s behalf.
Mr. McKey is better known as “Mac” plain and simple.
And the video was shot partly as a tribute to the One Perfect Rose. The pool was opened early so she could go for a last swim

Mama’s horror-scope told her to take a day off and walk by the water. Hmmm. It IS raining buckets outside. Does that count?

Thanks for clearing up the confusion over the Newfie count. Now we understand.

Oleys, that was an interesting article. Did you notice that she works with someone from the Rodale Institute? Back about 45 years ago when Barb was a young woman, she started reading Prevention Magazine, which was started by Robert Rodale. He was a bearded, far-out eccentric who thought processed food, white flour and sugar were all bad for you. Chemicals too. He touted organic foods and natural living when it was all in its infancy. Barb started growing some veggies, and made all her baby foods, because back in the day they contained MSG! Her kids didn’t drink pop or eat a lot of food that came out of boxes. They also didn’t get sick or have cavities! Her family thought she was a little touched in the head.

  21. Meashka
    10:49 am on June 7th, 2013

Barb, the Rodale Institute is very close to us, and our ex-state rep worked very closely with them on many organic bills. Many of our local farmers work closely with them as well. Excellent organization, Mom says.

  22. Tupper and Gilly
    10:57 am on June 7th, 2013

Barb – bet your kids thank you now!

This all brings up one of our pet soapbox issues. Why is most of the “bad” food the affordable food? White rice is more processed than brown, but it cost less. White bread is $1 a loaf, while whole wheat is $3. Flavored carbonated water with no sugar or chemicals cost two times what sugared, chemically loaded sodas do. No wonder that lower income people say they simply can’t afford to eat healthy.
Ok – getting down off the box now. Just had to get that off our little Corgi chests.

  23. Herd of Hounds
    11:07 am on June 7th, 2013

B&M: Mom was vegetarian for a loooog time and grew veggies in CA by Rodale’s book. When she inherited 3 step-2 leggers, she fed them “healthy” and they maintained she was either trying to kill them or starve them. Once on their own with their own “pups”, the song changed!

Oh dear – Gramp just got back from the DMV – he failed the eye test. He has a form to be filled out by his eye doc, but at this point, it kinda sorta looks like he may be about to lose his license.
We are torn. Gramp is not a great driver at this point, but he is following Mama’s strongly worded request that he only drive in the daytime to places that he is very familiar with, such as the grocery store and church, etc. No highway, no nighttime, no long distance driving. But to have NO license – to depend totally on Mama….oh dear, this could get difficult….

Siber, yes we are probably a little obsessive about our tomatoes. But it is one of Barb’s healthier addictions.

Interesting that others of you were into Prevention when it was considered far out. Now it sits on the reading tables of doctor’s offices.

T & G, You mentioned white bread for a dollar. Barb refuses to eat bread that can be squished into a ball and used for catfish bait! Jack says her bread is crunchy and has seeds in it.

Poor Kat, you are sooo disillusional!

T & G’s mum, Barb’s good friend Kim has her 87 year old father living with her and her husband. She just took his keys away after he had a couple of close calls. He is very pouty about it, but when he drives he has to go on country roads and highways. Kim was afraid he would end up causing a serious accident. If Gramps can just drive during the day and only go short distances it might still be OK. But even then, what about his sight?

Abbey & Grady on a very serious stakeout.
    It ended badly. Someone barked.

Our Gramp failed the Driver’s Test when he pulled too close to the white line at a stop. No amount of arguing would change the instructor’s grading and may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Fortunately he has his very own Cabbie to take him to the store and doctor appointments.

I will be sorting through my stuff for the boutique. Some of the Nome items I was thinking more in terms of the next auction.

Have more re-painting to do at the realtor’s request: the dining room and kitchen. Now that it is summer, more houses are on the market so at the realtor’s suggestion, the price has been lowered $10,000. Still no showings after a week at the new price so keep the positive thoughts flowing.

Wose, Now about 1/3 thru The Storyteller. It is hard to put down. Typically, Picoult has done a lot of good research for this book. It is well written, IMO, but disturbing at times and hard to read at times. The story is set in the current day, but there is some retelling of events that happened in the Holocaust, told by both a survivor and an SS guard. And that is the part Barb has trouble reading.

Bear Spirit Dog: I think it is a great idea to donate to the harness fund in memory of Rose and I am going to follow your lead. One thing that binds us together as a community and to Snowhook in particular is that we all take exceptional care of our dogs. That is the reason Siber-H told us about Snowhook and look what the last 2 years have meant to the kennel. AJ winning an award for the kennel’s dog care makes us all proud of our sponsorship. They deserve the best = no more chewed up and repaired harnesses! I will be emailing Wose and the Pug of my $25 donation to make it official.

Melanie – stones could be sapphires, or blue topaz (more likely) or aquamarines. ‘Course, they could be glass too, but probably not if the settings are sterling. And the brooch is lovely.
    Be gentle on the polishing.

Terry – glad to know that all is well again. Bet those clams and oysters on the half shell would slip, slide away down that bruised throat.

What a wonderful time we have had getting to know one of Snowhook’s 2-leggeds. We all came up with a great idea. We should have a Plunderer’s Passport. Every time Plunderers meet we get a “stamp” verifying that we have traveled afar to meet one of our ‘tribe’. Great idea huh??? Anyway after walking Rebecca 6.5 miles yesterday maybe no one will want to visit us!

My mama has to get up at the crack of dark tomorrow for a long day of travel. Good night all youse.

Oh! I’ve also met Griz! He must be added to the list.

Now that my work conference is finished and the sight seeing complete I am going to visit Coach and Bev for a few days. It will be the first time I will see Bec since she was diagnosed with Nasty Cancer Business. I am very grateful my employer encourages us and makes it possible for us to visit family any time we have to travel to the lower 48 for work.

Bella, give your Bev and Coach a big Newfy hug and slobber from us and the Pack. Grace reminded me to say the bets time for a hug and slobber is right after you drink water. If you keep some in your mouth and then let it spurt out you should come close to the real thing.

I, of course, suggest just send them our love, but I am not a Newf . . Just a carrier.

Wose: (whispering) Wookie’s parents said I could get a kitty. What color do you think I should get? The color should look good with pink, sparkles and pink sparkles.

Hugs and husky kisses to Bev and Coach.
