“No one threw anything and it was great seeing Katherine Hall Page,” says Spence.
“Did you get into the three S’s of writing?”

“I believe so.”

Gee, I may be first this morning. Rockies beat Yankees. I guess the Yankees don’t like those high altitudes.
And who knew, Spence — a man of discipline. Although I suspect there may be a bit more to good writing than that. Perhaps the two P’s — perspiration and persistence.
8:06 am on May 8th, 2013
Good Morning Spence, Admin, and Wookie’s Dad!
Annie, Macy, and Belle, great picture!
Welcome to Izzy, Bailey, Choco and the playing dude.
Sleep, Showers, Schedule????? Really? That’s it? We can do the first and the last. We are in fact very good at those. But not so hot on showers.
8:26 am on May 8th, 2013
Good morning Oleys and Wookie’s Dad. We would have never guessed the 3 S’s. WD mentioned persistence – Barb’s brother had a cross stitched needlework when he was in med school. It said “Persistence is Genius in Disguise”. Their mom made it for him and it hung about his desk.
8:35 am on May 8th, 2013
Gooood morning everyone! OH: We love the shower part, house or hose, just don’t add soap and we’re good. A bit of sun today:)Imagine Spence knowing the 3 S’s. Next to Bernie, he must be the smartest in the room.
9:04 am on May 8th, 2013
Wookie’s Dad: It is getting harder for the Yankees to beat anybody. (You know I love my Yankees).
I won’t be able to escape Rio today!
9:10 am on May 8th, 2013
Siber in his ball cap is on the right!
Barb has to get ready for p.t. Just 3 times left!
9:10 am on May 8th, 2013
Welcome to the new FOC’s! Macy, great picture, I like it a lot!
9:12 am on May 8th, 2013
Maggie: Wow! Barb is getting closer to the finish line. Yay!
Did you enjoy your bone yesterday?
9:19 am on May 8th, 2013
Wrose, Yes the birthday bone was a big hit. The nice thing about these marrow bones is that I keep them forever. After I get it all cleaned off I bring them into the house and Barb puts them into my toy basket. Whenever I get that feeling in my teeth, like Chet does, I just select one and chew away. Hope your meds are evening out.
9:27 am on May 8th, 2013
Lucy Lou, we are so proud of your possum-gettin’ abilities!
Maggie, woo hoo!!! Barb is almost done done done!
And, we have bones like that scattered all about the farm. One never knows when one might get that feeling in one’s teeth!
9:43 am on May 8th, 2013
My poor Yankees. Sniff.
9:45 am on May 8th, 2013
Altitude!…snort!…That is what the American League always blames when they lose here…heheheheheheheheheh!spit!

“The good writer, the great writer, has what I have called the three S’s: the power to see, to sense, and to say. That is, he is perceptive, he is feeling, and he has the power to express in language what he observes and reacts to” (Lawrence Clark Powell).
Good morning all.
10:08 am on May 8th, 2013
I sort of like the shower bit. . .
On a completely different note . . Snort!

Barb: I like the fact that Peaches recognized you/your voice.
11:01 am on May 8th, 2013
Two of the S’s are okay with me, but you can leave out the showers. That is torture to some of us.
Lucy Lou got a possum! I am missing out. We don’t have them here.
Good Morning All
11:21 am on May 8th, 2013
Good morning everyone!
Going to hopefully finish up the garden today with Finn’s help. I have a great surprise in store for him today. 🙂
11:24 am on May 8th, 2013
Siber-H, don’t you have Armadillos? Or is that just the Southern regions?
Wöökie’s Dad, If you have Perspiration you need the shower.
We are getting showers today. I have battened down the yard just in case it decideds to storm.
The Pack has gotten back from the Walk/Run. On the schedule now? Snooze.
11:42 am on May 8th, 2013
Melanie, We don’t have armadillos, but Texas does. We have lots of lizards but they are pretty boring. Mom’s dingo used to capture and kill lizards and then lay them on the gound to make lizard jerky out of them. Mom thought it was a bit gross, but she let him do his own thing.
11:48 am on May 8th, 2013
Siber-H. I absolutely abhor possums. Never saw one until I moved south. It was laying in the driveway and I thought it was dead. I picked it up in a shovel and went to deposit it in the woods, but it hopped off the shovel and bolted. Since then, I stay very very far away.
11:52 am on May 8th, 2013
Now I’m seeing a line of desiccated lizards in decreasing size . . Not my cup of tea.
Waiting for a solitaire came to download for Zoë’s iPaw.
11:57 am on May 8th, 2013
Hi FinnDog’s Mom! I am hoping to rest from the garden today. Not that I don’t have everything that I haven’t done in the house waiting for me.
I am going to get OTAS and GLAD’s 1st Anniversary Present mailed. The first anniversary is paper. I am putting a beautiful piece of handmade paper in a frame that is glass on both sides. They can put it in the window and the sun will come through it.
12:08 pm on May 8th, 2013
Finn’s Mom, My mom has never seen a possum, but she has the same opinion of them you do…just rather yucky
12:21 pm on May 8th, 2013
Me too! Never seen a possum, don’t want to.
On today’s schedule is trying to dig some horseradish plants out so I can put something else in. Well…that was before I remembered Dad’s dentist appointment.
MacyMinPin: Excellent picture of y’all on Friends of Chet.
12:23 pm on May 8th, 2013
Actors!…Those Killdear birds and those Possums should get together and form an acting troupe…heh!heh!
12:36 pm on May 8th, 2013
Carpola!
Some critter has eaten all the leaves off 2/3rds of the sunflowers I planted yesterday. I raised those flowers from seed, dog nab it!
12:43 pm on May 8th, 2013
Dawson: Sorry. It may be rabbits.
Possums are cute. They have round furry bodies and long hairless tails. I think they come out at night and can’t see well but their hearing is excellent. I used to have one who came to the garden regularly.
12:43 pm on May 8th, 2013
Awww. Peaches came right over to Barb and wanted to be picked up.
Here’s my latest (2 years old) picture of Lily and Peaches.

12:51 pm on May 8th, 2013
B.Stover: You are better than I will ever be. Possums and Skunks are the bane of my existence. Finn got sprayed by a skunk once and it was like smelling death…whew!
12:55 pm on May 8th, 2013
Hmmmnn. I wonder what Finn’s surprise will be. A long buried bone?
12:58 pm on May 8th, 2013
Possums don’t get to “act” around us. No playing possum for ones we run into. heh heh heh
1:02 pm on May 8th, 2013
Melanie, How do they make that commercial???? Amazing, and very very cringe-worthy scary.
And I love that Melanie song!
1:07 pm on May 8th, 2013
Well…I have a few too many sunflowers anyways. Yes, I’m sure it was those wascally wabbits. I saw one
thumbingwriggling his nose at me as I returned from my bike ride this morning.OTAS and GLAD: It’s been one year already? That went fast.
Wookie’s Dad: I thought that since you hadn’t mentioned the Tigers versus Nationals game that perhaps the Tigers won, but it was postponed.
FinnDog’sMom: If a possum came to life and jumped off my shovel, I would throw the shovel up in the air with a scream of terror and run as fast as I could in the opposite direction. Heh.
1:33 pm on May 8th, 2013
Finn Dog’s Mom: I agree with you about skunks. However, no wild creature can be as bad a sparrow hawks.
I’m laughing at the image of the rabbit thumbing his nose at Dawson….Sorry.
1:43 pm on May 8th, 2013
Finn’s Mom, My mom agrees with you about skunks also. I have been skunked twice and her first Siberian got skunked too many times to even count. All this happened in our backyard. Mom won’t let me go out unsupervised after dark because of the skunks. Mom thinks she will hit the skunk over the head with a Mag Light before it gets me. ha ha
1:48 pm on May 8th, 2013
MPM, That is so sweet that you kept the pic of Lily and Peaches. Peaches still looks exactly the same, but Lily has grown up a bit since then.
Barb has a opossum story that is very similar. Generally when I grab a critter I just shake it till it stops moving, i.e. dead. One day I got hold of a baby possum, shook it a bit and then set it down when I thought I had done my duty. Barb noticed that its eyes were still shiny so she thought it was playing dead. She did the shovel thing, putting it under a tree outside my yard. Half hour later it was gone, never to be seen again.
2:20 pm on May 8th, 2013
MPM: Lily is absolutely gorgeous. Peaches reminds me of the two baby chickens I had when I lived in Paterson, NJ.
2:31 pm on May 8th, 2013
We have possums here. Ugly creatures but they are immune to snake venom so keep the snakes away. They also like to eat cat chow. Yes, mom leaves food out for the raccoons. Our pet food budget would probably feed Snowhook plus the Newf pack.
2:35 pm on May 8th, 2013
Dawson: Pretty much. Finn’s best buddies’ Dad slaughters his own meat, so as a trade for me making homemade puppy yummies that he sells at the Farmers’ Market, he gives Finn some of the choice bones. I didn’t scream, but I ran like my butt was on fire.
B.Stover: That night, I discovered the best way to remove skunk stink without ending up with a pink dog. Turkey Vultures are another one that I can’t stand and Finn loudly voices his displeasure of them.
Worst animal story was when my Husky got after the neighbors’ rooster. The rooster got into his run and it was over before we could stop it.
2:50 pm on May 8th, 2013
shhhh. Finn’s mom: Please do not tell our mom that rooster story.
2:54 pm on May 8th, 2013
Funny skunk story:
All of us have gotten skunked at least once. Most of us several times. But one time Sasha got skunked. The ‘rents used their special internet recipe to get rid of her stink, and she was almost as good as new. The next day, when they came home from work, she stank again! So they figured they hadn’t gotten all of the stink out the first time, and washed her in their special recipe once again.
Next day, she stank yet again, just as bad as the first time. So they washed her again.
Next day, when Pop put the horses out in their pasture, both Shiek and Shar stopped to investigate something out there, and backed off. Pop went out and there it was: Sasha’s dead skunk that she was rolling in every day!
You see, we huskies love that smell!
3:11 pm on May 8th, 2013
Stink!…I wonder if that internet recipe would work on Beau’s breath…sniff!
3:11 pm on May 8th, 2013
Please don’t tell Annie and Belle that they got chopped off. It really was a cute picture, once.
Our late Lhasa Apsos took on a deadly nest of ferocious baby possums.
Do any of you have an opinion re: washing pooches with the water hose? I have never done it to this bunch, just wondering.
Here is another bird to identify. I just take their pictures, not ask them for their bios.

3:16 pm on May 8th, 2013
Hmm . . Macy’s Mom, when I make the FOC picture big, all three of you are there.
I would look up that bird, but the weather is beginning to catch up with me. Time to hibernate a bit.
3:21 pm on May 8th, 2013
That is an interesting bird. OK, you guys, what kind of bird is it?
Macy’s Mom, Yes, My mom has washed dogs with the garden hose in very hot weather. She never had any problems doing it and says it was sorta fun. The dogs never seemed to get cold from it.
I am not one of the dogs she has washed with the garden hose and I am not going to be one of those dogs either.
3:35 pm on May 8th, 2013
That looks like some sort of a fish eating bird that lives near the coast. Nothing like that here, nor hav I ever seen one. Very pretty
CNN just announced that a verdict has been reached in the Jodi Arias trial, and will be read live at 4:30 ET (1 hour from now).
We here hope they throw the book at her. Life w/o parole would be good.
3:39 pm on May 8th, 2013
Dawson — that’s right, it got rained out, so the Tigers are safe for at least another day.
3:47 pm on May 8th, 2013
Macy: I’ve used the hose on a muddy Giant before. Who would have guess he could screech so high.
3:51 pm on May 8th, 2013
Macy’s latest bird is a Ruddy Turnstone. Here’s a link.

Mud!…How much mud can a Giant wear?…sniff!
3:58 pm on May 8th, 2013
It’s raining, it’s pouring
The pug must be snoring . .
Thanks Riö, we really need the rain.
Snowbella, perhaps if you hadn’t used the water that was JUST melted snow.
4:04 pm on May 8th, 2013
about the bird…Thanks Stover….beautiful colors on that bird.

I miss T&G and Basil and Sage.
4:14 pm on May 8th, 2013
Finn gets a hose bath if he is extremely dirty, but that’s few and far between. Nothing wrong with it and he seems to like chasing the water.
4:17 pm on May 8th, 2013
Thanks Bee, great research. Very attractive bird. We figured that with that beak it had to be eating fish or little critters that live in the sand.
4:20 pm on May 8th, 2013
Neat bird. Thanks for posting it, Macy, and thanks for researching it, Bee.
We here get washed with a hose, when we get washed. Which is few and far between.
4:36 pm on May 8th, 2013
I was thinking Macy’s bird was an American Avocet but once I checked I decided I had no idea. Good spotting BStover.
Mr.Staff and I are a team! We have the first raised bed finished and set up. We are waiting for the Hardware Hank guy to order in the hardware cloth. He told me he had it so I didn’t buy it at Menards. (in the interest of local economy) But when I got there he admitted he was out and didn’t know it till after my call. So hopefully I don’t have to wait until next week but I suspect I must.
CArpola, I want to finish it NOW NOW NOW.
The second frame is cut out and needs to have pilot holes drilled and to be screwed together and that is all. Easy peasy now that we have the method figured out.
Did you know that some 8′ long lumber is 1/4″ to 1/2″ longer than 8 feet and some is right on? Very annoying when you want things the same size.

Obviously I took the picture through a screen…sigh.
4:39 pm on May 8th, 2013
Rio: When a Giant gets the four-wheeler stuck in a mud bog, he can wear mud from head to toe. Not long before he got stuck in another bog on his way to get ice cream—he just had to take the back way. He walked home and asked me to help him. This would have been fine, but it was late evening and I just got cleaned up from working all day in a muddy kennel. I’m not sure how or why it played out this way, but AJ, the larger of us, drove the four-wheeler while I pushed. I started out in thigh deep mud, but as I pushed the further down I went until I was up to my armpits in mud. When the four-wheeler finally popped loose of the mud, I held onto the back rack and was pulled free, too. The next week when AJ came home covered in mud, spraying him off made me feel better.
Melanie: When it is water from the well, there is no help for it.

Jodi Arias was just convicted of 1st degree murder. Now she could get life or death in the sentencing stage.
5:08 pm on May 8th, 2013
The next door neighbor is having the old stucco siding removed today though the rain clouds are threatening. I am watching this young man with his jeans halfway down his bum and 6″ of his boxer shorts showing. I want to go tell him, “Nice, but it might rain.” No wait, the comma is in the wrong place. “Nice butt, it might rain.” (I think the latter is an example of using a comma incorrectly.)
Wookie’s Dad: I will let that pass for now…
MacyMinPin: A Ruddy Turnstone? I will check out BStover’s link.
5:35 pm on May 8th, 2013
Zoë likes me again. She has not liked the fact we can NOT eat the asparagus in the bed until next year. A couple of weeks ago I was told by Golinka that Hadley Asparagus is the best. They used to be an exporter to the world and years ago a blight came and destroyed the fields. They are now making a come back.
I got her a bunch of asparagus! We just had it. WOW!
She likes it!
5:44 pm on May 8th, 2013
Mom and Meashka just picked up asparagus from our local organic farmer. They always have the best around. We can’t wait to eat it! What, Mom? Oh. Sounds like only the ‘rents will be eating it.
5:59 pm on May 8th, 2013
Staff, Gosh, what Barb wouldn’t give for a garden that size! Very impressive! What size did you end up with for the beds?
6:17 pm on May 8th, 2013
Mom was gone most of the day so we just got to the computer. Sorry but will backtrack a bit. About 2 one morning, we found an opossum in the back yard so barked & barked at it. Don’t know why but mom lovked us in the house. We watched her through a window and she hit it with a stick, picked it up by the tail and chucked it over the fence into the neighbors’ yard. She said it made her a native Tennesseean to do that.

Dawson, excuse our ignorance, but why on earth would anyone bother cooking one of those critters? They taste just fine raw.
7:08 pm on May 8th, 2013
Thank Dog there were no photos.

Barb and Maggie. Not only is it big but it is sandy loam. I didn’t know how lucky I was at first…now I do. My brother-in-law who moved to Fargo and the clay there tells me several times a year how he misses it.
The first one is 7’6″ x 4′ and the next one will be 4×8.
When I moved here 24 years ago that was just grass. First I had about 1/2 of it dug up. Several years later we did the other half. It is just about 40’x 40′. I have the decorative wire fence to keep out the deer and other animals. It doesn’t work so we add an electric fence once the crop goes in. That doesn’t work for the groundhogs and rabbits so we also have chicken wire around the vulnerable crops. (that is why we are putting the hardware cloth inside the beds.
Mr.Staff prefers to grow mostly flowers now that he is retired but I usually get some veggies out every year.
this is me standing in the middle of the left(west) side about 5 years ago. Oh, and Alice thinking she is going to leap. That is why I am making that funny face.
7:22 pm on May 8th, 2013
What a beautiful picture!

OleyHowlers: I’m not likely to try ‘possum raw or cooked even if it is a 5 star recipe.
I have lost my appetite.

I am turning a little green. I keep thinking about Rebecca eating that moose head stew.
7:30 pm on May 8th, 2013
Staff, what a lovely picture! The colors are beautiful. I can understand why Alice wanted to jump.
7:31 pm on May 8th, 2013
Now Wose…I thought we all had agreed to never mention moose head stew again unless we needed to help someone who is dieting to lose weight. 🙂

CHobbit: Oooops! It was the only thing I could think of more revolting than roasted opossum.

Gross!….Beau ate katfish tonight and apparently loved it…sniff!gurgle!…I snubbed my nose at it and demanded something else…grump!…He ate all the katfish and then gobbled down every nugget of his kibble too…wheeze!…This is the guy who likes salmon and karrots….grunt!

Tap! Tap! Tap! Can youse guys hear me?
Rio and I are pleased to make the following announcement.
We have our first Magic Number Winner! And the winner is….Drumroll please…..
the O’Howlers Mom! Congratulations! You will receive a professional photograph of our team taken at this year’s Iditarod.
The “Have Harness, Will Travel” fund has received several donations, but we have a way to go to reach the $1600.00 goal. I realize that financial times are tough for all of us. Everyone on this here blog has given generously each time a donation drive begins. Whether big or small, each of your donations means so much, and are greatly appreciated. Let’s plunder on, so the Snowhook dogs have harnesses that are strong and not chewed up.
Please remember when you make a donation, it is only official via e-mail, with a copy to me AND a copy to Rio.
Thanks!

Melanie, It is one of my favorite pictures also.
By the way, Twins in the second inning up 9 to 5 over Boston. 4 runs in the first and 5 so far in the second.
8:15 pm on May 8th, 2013
Staff!…Are you sure it is only the 2nd inning and the Twinkies have scored 9 runs against the Sox???….grunt!…Did I read that right??…heh!
8:16 pm on May 8th, 2013
RIO! Did I do okay?
8:17 pm on May 8th, 2013
Rose!…You are a very gifted public speaker…snort!snort!
8:18 pm on May 8th, 2013
First, I want to start out by saying that I’m fine—I tell AJ he must say this before he tells me about something bad or scary. There was a shooting in the parking lot of my office today. I didn’t see it happen, but heard the gun shots. If someone was hit, they fled the scene. Word on the beat is that it is gang related.
Staff: That is a great photo of you and Miss Johnson. There is some discussion about who is the prettiest of the three sisters. The votes are evenly split at 22 a piece. Some have voted more than once. Belle Starr could be the tie breaker, but refuses to vote for anyone but herself.
Hoose mead stew! Even the thought makes my stomach flip and flop and not in the first kiss sort of way.
8:21 pm on May 8th, 2013
11 to 5 now. still the second inning…
8:23 pm on May 8th, 2013
Gangs!…There are no gangs in Alaska, are there?…grunt!…Oh my dawg. This makes me very very very pissed off indeed…wheeze!…Rebecca, you will have to start wearing a bullet-proof vest. No questions asked…snort!
8:23 pm on May 8th, 2013
Rebecca: OMD! I am so relieved to hear that you are fine. That must have been so scary! YIKES!
8:27 pm on May 8th, 2013
RIO! Thank you for the compliment. Now it is time for my meds. I might be going over the rainbow…..
8:36 pm on May 8th, 2013
Rose!…Goodnight!…snort!…I promise to root for your Yankees[JK]…heheheh!…It is very rainy here, so it will be interesting to see if the game even starts…grunt!
8:51 pm on May 8th, 2013
One thing that worries me about moving to the big city is the increased crime including gang activity. However, I do know that the media feeds off the bad stories so it probably isn’t as bad as things I hear. And I know that crime happens anywhere. A friend of mine says that in her hometown of 5,000 in Texas yesterday a man was stabbed in the heart on main street and that no one is saying anything about it which she found odd since everyone knows everyone in that town.
I am getting things done but have felt sad today. The loss of Lady reminds me of the coming loss of home and friends and living in interior Alaska where I have lived for almost 30 years. Good things are coming but today it has overwhelmed me. Sadie and I are working at being a pack of two.
9:05 pm on May 8th, 2013
Moving!…Packing up and moving is hard. Just ask me and my friend…sniff!…She says she still does not have any real friends in the town we live…grunt!…And work is a joke, where friends are concerned…huffle!…So good luck CHobbit. Luckily, you have Sadie so you will not be lonely….wheeze!
9:22 pm on May 8th, 2013
Staff!…My game is tied at 2. What is the score of your game?…snort!…I can only imagine…
9:44 pm on May 8th, 2013
Thanks B Stover for identifying my little friend.
C Hobbit, according to my aunt in Alaska, you do NOT want to live in Anchorage if you are concerned with crime. She lives out a way and says that it is much better.
I neglected to mention a while back that the Rangers SWEPT the Red Sox, heh heh heh
9:48 pm on May 8th, 2013
Macys_Mom!….heheheheheheheheh!…chorkel!…Swept the Sox!…hehsnort!heh!

Poor ol’ Bean Socks . .
We even have crime here in our town of less than 1,000. sigh
Staff, I love your garden. Too much for me, but I will enjoy it through pictures. Hint.

Gulf Coast Flying Rats

CHobbit, I have lots of kittens I can send you to keep you company. They are homely but sweet!
Chad flew into Fresno tonight but apparently he has decided not to see us. We had planned on picking him up at the airport tonight and then take him out to dinner. And then tomorrow, I was going to take a vacation day and told him we could do anything he wanted. And since we was supposed to fight at a MMA match on Saturday, we were going to drive him two hours to get weighed in at 10 am, wait all day, pay $60 for tickets, watch his match, take him and his brother out to dinner, and then drive another 2 hours home, plus another hour round trip to take him to his hotel. Instead, he decided that he “only has four days to cut loose in Cali and since I was too controlling then he was going to spend all of his time with friends.”

Wolfie Wigglebutt: I am so sorry. Be at peace. He has his own journey to make and hopefully someday he will find himself home — healthy of mind and body. You have done all and more of what can be expected.

I was just turning off the light over my parakeet cage and one of my two birds is laying on the floor apparently dead. She was just fine a couple of hours ago and both have been chirping. This is too weird with all the run of bad luck I am having. She was the older of my two birds but parakeets live a long time. {{sigh}}

Ooo Wolfie, it sounds like you might have made a donation to the harness fund. You thought of a way to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Good for you! Whoo hoo to uuuuu 🙂
