Post Mortem

“How did the talk go?” says Spence.

“No one threw anything,” Admin says.

“Always a good sign.”

It was? Not to me. I almost always like when people throw things. Because then I go get them! Dudes throwing knives? That’s a little different. Once there was this perp, name escaping me at the moment, who had a real pointy nose that reminded me of a knife and he turned out to be good with knives, kind of an interesting something or other. But Bernie can be quick, and he shifted his head just in time, the knife sticking deep into the wall of the shed. After that the pointy-nose dude – what’s that expression? – got what was coming to him. That’s how we do things here at the Little Detective Agency.

From Admin: Here’s Ian once more, Friend of the Month. Ian’s human associate can get in touch with Spence (spence.quinn@gmail) and the prize – a signed copy of To Fetch A Thief – will be winging its way.

Welcome Tigro (who has good taste in literature), Becca, Daisy.

    Good morning Chet and everyone.

Admin: Any idea when we’ll get the cover art for Dog Who?

    Good Morning B!
When I tried to sign on this morning the comment section didn’t show up. The only way to get on was to click on BLOG – which then brought up today’s post from Chet, Spence and Admin. I wonder if anyone else is having the same problem?

    Good morning.

Let’s hear from Ian, Ean Eun, Een, or whatever. Show up or else!
There should be a rule about that!

Everyone must be pooped out after all the vedding festivites yesterday. And why is it that those English want to have weddings at 4:00 a.m.?

Hi Barb&Maggie! I wonder if there is some kind of time limit to claim the prize. Of course, we all are here on the blog most every day so are more aware of such things. Ian, if you are out there bark 3 times. We would love to say howdy and chat for a bit.

Time!… That Lurker has a whole freakin’ month to claim his prize…grump!… Anything else you want to know?…sniff! …Unless Admin wises up before then. I don’t see that happening though….groan!

Project!… My friend is kicking herself for not ordering her black paper earlier…grump!…Now she only has enough to do a little more at the top of this Auction Item…snuff!… Is everyone else working on their Items? I should have all the rules worked out this weekend. Since I didn’t get much feedback from many of you, I will be making up the rules myself, with a little help from Rebecca of course…snorkel!

Rio: Speaking of Rebecca, I see she sent Whitey-Lance & the working dogs off to their summer assignment on the glacier.

She is very sad and needs big hugs from all of us. So, gather round and let her know how much we care.

Hi Chet: Thanks, everything seems to be working okay now.

Friend of the Month: We are most likely getting too anzious about Ian claiming his prize. After all, it isn’t even the end of April and the winner’s photo will be posted for the entire month of May. He might not even realize he is a winner yet.

    12:12 pm on April 30th, 2011

    Greetings dear plunderers!

It’s Jasper here and boy am I tired from my very exciting morning. Mom got up and began running around cleaning at tip-top speed, which is very, very unusual–both for the tip-top speed and the cleaning. The dishes are washing in the whooshy box, and the clothes are being cleaned in the swishy box, and then, BIG surprise to me, she grabs my leash! I like it so much when she grabs my leash so I had to jump and jump for a while, but then I landed on all four paws, shaking and quivering in excitement, and then (!!) to the car we go!

Off on such an adventure. First, to a drive thru place where mom got some iced tea. She sure loves her tea. And it took so long in line they just told mom to take it for free. Bonus!

Then, off to my two-legged brother’s busy place where mom had a bunch of guys changing something in the car. The smells were so unusual. Grease, sweat, spit, rubber, old food, and a whole bunch of people smells. I said hello to everyone, then mom took me for a walk around a whole bunch of cars and I peed on all the bushes.

Then mom got a phone call and it was my very favorite Aunt, Aunt Mimi! She invited mom to join her and Grandma at a food place, so off we go in the car again. I waited and rested a bit when mom went in the restaurant. Mom left the sun roof cracked, and 3 of the windows were down just the right amount of space so the air could come in and people could say hi to me, but I couldn’t get my nose outside the window.

Then, we’re off again and back home. My house has some new smells that I have to check out. Someone was here! And I didn’t get to say hello. Oh well, I am so ready for a nap that I almost don’t care. Gotta go, eyes are closi..n…g…….

Snowhook!…I don’t know why Rebecca is so sad…grunt!…She will have all of us this summer to hang out with…sniff!….I know she will be busy selling calendars, t-shirts, hoodies and then of course there is the Auction to get ready for…huffle! …Don’t be sad Reba – just remember your guys are having the time of their lives pulling that sled around…heh! …I wonder what SiberH would do if he was ever hooked up to one of those things…yark!yark!

  13. Siber-H
    12:46 pm on April 30th, 2011

Siber-H’s mom here, Rio, if you have ever seen the movie, Snow Dogs, where the main character in it first hooks up those Siberians to a sled…well, I think that is what Siber-H would do. It is a silly movie, but we love it.

Rebecca, can you send the working dogs off with a laptop so that they can keep up with all of us on Chet? That would be awesome!

Jasper, I wonder who came to your house while you were gone? It is very mysterious, yes?

Rio, Mom’s toffee won’t take long to make. She does need to find some cute boxes though.

  15. Siber-H
    1:00 pm on April 30th, 2011

Siberian hugs go out to Rebecca because she will miss the team, but they will be having a blast on the glacier. Rio is right, though, she will have a busy summer. Mom is looking forward to tee-shirts, hoodies, or whatever Rebecca comes up with.

I think Whitey’s tag would bring good money at the auction. I told mom about it and she rolled her eyes, but she will come through.

How is Sam feeling today? Better, I hope.

  16. BearSpiritDog
    1:18 pm on April 30th, 2011

Siber-H: We agree Whitey’s dog tag would be a big auction item, no matter what the condition!
Wolfie: A great idea to leave Whitey with some sort of communication device. Toffee! Reminds us to dig out that auction item. Hmmm…now where did I bury it?
Hi Jasper: Wondering about that mystery guest here too.

Whew, just got back from taking YSAS to the train. This one is 2 hours away, but it’s only $15 to NYC. He drove there. We stopped in a nice town, had a walk, some brunch, got back in and went 15 more minutes, and away he went. :(

I drove back (with the GPS). It was the longest solo trip I’ve been on for over a year. I did great! (Patting myself on the back).

The Pack was glad to see me and Ellie reminded me that the new video is now on youtube. So here you go . . .

Riö: Auction item update. Dan’s book are ready to go just need the name of who buys each one, so he can write.

YSAS’s pic is a problem because the *^$%& printer quit on me. Have to figure that out, and send him the pics. He’ll sign with whomever wins and send them to me so I can send them out.

I’m having trouble picking out a picture for 11 x 14 framed Newfoundland print. The Pack? Snow? Water? Puppy? It’s a hard decision but I’ll figure it out.

Melanie, Love the video. Have to have Kelly watch it. McKey does a great job, but you are right, Alpha B**** is probably not a good thing to call Grandma. We thought his acent was good. Have you gotten a report from Liz yet? She would be a much better judge.

Barb’s friend Kim just brought over some eggs and we added some of ours and now have 25 in the incubator. 3 weeks from now there will hopefully be lots of peeps in there.

Melanie – We enjoyed your video, your son, and those great big dogs.

Rio – Your friend does beautiful work. There must be a number of art shows near where you live. She should be selling these.

Sam is still improving. It sounds like she has a cold but I didn’t know dogs could catch cold. She coughs and generally sounds bad and congested with her breathing. Her mom is watching to make sure it doesn’t go into pneumonia.

  40. Barb & Maggie
    7:03 pm on April 30th, 2011

Hope little Sammy is ok. Did she ever go to the vet?

Barb just set a steak out to put on the grill later. For some reason she stuck it way up on the top of the microwave. Wonder why?

Bee, Barb is hoping to sell this place and get something closer in on about 2 acres, which would still have zoning for farm animals. Some zoning will allow horses but not chickens, which makes no sense. Even if they didn’t allow them, we would probably sneak in a few, but would have to rehome our 3 roosters (the noisy ones). We don’t usually break the law, but if you can chickens in New York City, you should be able to have a few hens on an acre or two in rural Illinois.

Melanie, we were wondering if you could use regular flour instead of rice flour for the twice fried tofu. We don’t have gluten allergies, but were wondering if the rice flour would make a lighter batter.

  41. LizF
    7:29 pm on April 30th, 2011

B – slice straight down from the top of the mango so that you get to the seed then follow it down all the way to the bottom. Then do the other side, so you have two cheeks with the skin on. Cut criss-cross marks through the flesh (but not thru the skin). Gently turn the cheek inside out so you now have a convex cheek with all the little squares from the criss crossing sticking out. (I can’t imagine this making sense thru words, you really need a video!)

Dang, i haven’t watched YSAS and his accent yet (connection here is too slow, i’ll put a note to do it at the busy place tmw.)

WOlfie’s mum mentioned the toffeee!!!!!!!! 😀

    Hi Liz!

Barb & MagPie: I will ask YSAS tomorrow about the flour. Right now he is busy. I don’t see how he keeps going.

Next August he will in Hamlet as Laertes. So he and the guy who will be Hamlet are in Columbus Park working on their sword choreography. They also took a hat. I said, “Why on earth are you taking a hat?” I was told, “Just in case anyone wants to throw money in it.”

    Don’t know why I didn’t think of that . . .

Totally zonked and going to bed. Can’t wait to curl up in my bed and read! Maybe a little bit of camomile tea. Maybe some honey.

Hey, y’all! Mom just got home from work, so this is the first chance I’ve had to tell you about her new book. Last night she went to the Friends of the Library sale, so she could get some more books for my girl’s future classroom. One of the books she found is called “Kiana’s Iditarod,” about a dog running the race! When Mom saw the book she thought about the teachers’ part of the Iditarod site, and she bought it in case my girl wants to do that with her class!

By the way, she has an interview in a couple weeks to be a second-grade teacher — keep your paws crossed everyone!!!

It’s a terribly long flight and it never gets better – I’ve flown there twelve times! Mostly London, a couple of times other cities in Europe. Oh for a big lottery win and a ticket in first class (or a private lear jet).

Siber, Snow Dogs is such a good film, I’m on the edge of my seat every time. So hard to watch when the humans fly off…

Hi everyone – We’ve have been sorely abused and abandoned all day and we are not talking to Mama – she left us home with the KATS!
She said something about not being able to escape going to a birthday party for a 1 year old. We don’t believe it for a minute, cuz Mama does NOT get warm and fuzzy about 2 legged babies…..baby puppies and kitties and goaties, maybe. But humans…not so much. She claims that since this is her surrogate daughter’s baby girl, she had to go. And she did leave with a big box with a bow on it….but we are still pretty sure she was fibbing to us.
Anyway, she is home now, holding her head and mumbling about maurauding packs of toddlers – screaming, crying, pooping, cake covered, sugar-fueled toddlers. She really wants to hug us, her nicely behaved, quiet Corgis, but we aren’t sure we are ready to forgive her…..oh, wait a minute….she’s opening the magic treat cupboard….gotta go!

  52. B.Stover
    8:39 pm on April 30th, 2011

Liz: Laertes wounds Hamlet with a poisoned sword and in the scuffle the swords get switched and Hamlet wounds Laertes and he dies telling Hamlet it’s not his (Hamlet’s) fault but Claudius’. Horatio is the only one living at the end…along with Fortinbras and the English Ambassadors. “The rest is silence.” Love that line.

Clarkson!…Next August? …snort!…How I hope he has other jobs lined up inbetween then and now…sniff!…That’s almost how long we have to wait for the next Chet and Bernie book…gruffle!

Maybe someday there will be a video of Mckey and the sword choreography.

  55. Basil and Sage
    9:03 pm on April 30th, 2011

What a GREAT Day! Basil and I have had the best day ever. We started this morning off by helping our Mom wrap a big box. Basil helped by jumping into the box andrefusing to move. I helped by shredding the first paper she wrapped around the box, then Basil managed to catch his tail in the roll of packing tape, and went tearing off down the hall with the roll of tape bumping off his butt. I was laying on my back laughing my buns off! Then once the box was finally wrapped and the bow was on, Basil waited until she left the room, then he signaled me and I ripped the bow off and killed it. Bad bow…bad, bad bow.
Eventually, we were left here at the house. Now it was time to torture Corgis! We would wait until they dozed off in a sunny spot and then we would JUMP ALL OVER THEM! And the RUNNNNNNNN!
Tupper just growls and snaps at us, but Gilly will play tag. We knocked over all the stuff that she puts on the shelves – we got our KatGrass off the window sill and dumped that on the floor, we skidded every scatter rug in the house – hey, they ARE called scatter rugs for a reason! It was just the best.
    Hope she leaves again tomorrow!

I started sending good-bye last night to the dogs, and said the final good-bye to all the dogs heading to work on the glacier this morning. Tenzing, Luna, Belle Starr, Howard, Bridger, Savannah, Johnny, Garcia and I howled as the dog truck and trailer pulled away. As I watched the team go down the driveway, Tenzing got loose and chased after them…as if my heart weren’t already breaking…

I know the dogs will have fun—this is partly while we are sending them to the glacier. It also gives us the opportunity to save money for Iditarod, but the kennel looks awfully empty today. I will miss them terribly and hope that they understand how much they are loved.

The time I won’t spend doing dog chores at night will give me the time to focus on other things like t-shirts, hoodies and writing. We’re struggling with the logo so the hoodies and t-shirts have stalled.

Dog chores for eight dogs—a breeze tonight.

Rebecca!…One or two more thoughts…heh!…Your guys are not ‘house guys’, they are working guys, just like Chet….snort!….That’s what they love to do. If they hung around the Kennel all summer they would just get fat and lazy…sniff!…Like some of us here on this blog….grunt!…You know who you are too, so don’t deny it!!… huffle! …So be happy for them and relieved because your workload will be a lot less for awhile. Please, do not get fat and lazy while your guys are gone, they will need you in tip-top shape again this winter…chuffle!

I know they will have a good time and will get a lot of attention. I do hope that they don’t think we’ve abandoned them, especially the rescue dogs who have transfered hands.

Orion asked for an extra belly rub this morning before I put him in the dog box. He is very tender hearted and just needed an extra love.

Rockies!….heh!snort!heh!…. After the camera had panned the audience on of our wonderful announcers said, “A lot of folks tonight look like they are dressed for the Iditarod instead of a baseball game tonight.” …snort!….The wind will just not let up and it is cold and nasty outside. Someone said it was snowing in the Outfield. The weather patterns are different way out there…heh!

Rebecca!…You are going to make SiberH cry again…sniffle!

Rebecca – Its gonna be hard for you cuz you will miss your hugs and slurps from your dogs. But they are on their way to an adventure! For them, this will be like Disney, Six Flags and summer cap all in one. They will actually be learning more about sledding and will stay tough and strong and be ready to kick some butt next Iditarod. And Siber is right – these are WORKING dogs- albeit cuddly ones.
So, if you really feel the need for some cuddles and hugs and soft furry handfulls——we have a couple of KATS we would be happy to ship to you. Free of charge. Please.

    (catnip will be included)

Ha! Tupper and Gilly, AJ has made me promise not to bring any more animals home—my addtion to this rule is unless they really, really need a second chance.

I hope someone will send you and AJ some pictures of the team hauling the tourists around on the Glacier.

The dogs will have each other. It will be the team working together. I think that will be a big help toward their feeling secure while they are away from you and AJ.

Rebecca – (whispering – this is Gilly here. Don’t worry about Orion. He knows who loves him, who rescued him. I had a really awful life before my Mama saved me. And everyone says I am pretty new-rotic, whatever that is. But I ALWAYS know that Mama and Dad love me. I ALWAYS know that they are coming home soon. And even when I had to stay at the V-E-T, I KNEW they were going to come back and get me – they promised. Sometimes I get a little scared, but I do know I am safe now…and Orion does too.)

Rebecca!…Don’t go anywhere near those nitwit Kats…heh!..Nuthing but trouble, nuthing but trouble. In fact Double Trouble…grunt!…I’d come and stay with you for the Summer, but my friend says I can never ever leave the yard again…snuff!

Rebecca – tell AJ that Rio the Evil (Chubby) Pug REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needs a second chance! He needs to be strapped into a harness and run across the tundra.
We’ll work it out with his friend so that he can leave his yard.

    Thanks, T&G.

Gilly: you are very fortunate. Those who rescue animals are very special creatures in their own right.

I had to laugh this morning as Orion asked for just one last belly rub before I loaded him in the truck. Just this past race season, did Orion discover (and ask for/accept) belly rubs. It took a while before he would give/accept a hug or even make regular eye contact.

I’ve always loved how the whiskers on either side of Orion’s face are different colors—white on one side, black on the other.

Rio, the lead dog, I can see it now! Of course, the image I see has Rio leading from behind (as many good leaders do)—that is to say, riding the sled hood ornament style calling out commands whilst wearing a fleece jacket and matching dog booties.

Hood!….I could be the Guy in the Hood!….heh!…I love barking out commands and giving orders…snort!…What fun that would be by golly!…heh!snort!heh!…Except for all the cold, hardship, suffering and endurance. Those parts I would not like at all…sniff!

Gilly, you made mom’s eyes get teary. She remembers Teddy being dropped off on the side of the road sixteen years ago. For a day and a half, Teddy sat in one spot and waited for her previous owners to come back and get her. The third time that mom drove by, she took Teddy home with her and she has been mom’s girls ever since.’

Dogs have built in faith and my guess is that it wil be much harder on Bella that it will be on the team.

T&G: Plunderers would be welcome to visit the kennel anytime should you find yourself in our neck of the woods. I think CHarris is going to try and visit at some point after the dogs return.

I’m glad to have Chet’s blog. It gave me a good distraction during the race, but now is a place where friends are found. I’m thankful that a certain pug encouraged me to post in his soft-spoken, gently guiding, demure manner… :)

Rebecca, I don’t know where you are with your logo concept but an idea popped into by brain the other day. I would draw it but as you know, dogs do not have opposable thumbs and I cannot hold a pencil.

So I will try to describe it…..

If you google “snow hook”, and look at the images, then you will see that the third image on the right (the silver one) looks very much like a sled. At least, it does to me. So….if the snow hook becomes a sled, then you can have two ropes flowing off the sled. The top rope could spell out snow hook kennel in cursive, and the bottom rope could underline it. And what if the end of the rope could be tied to a certain handsome doggie with a red and white striped jacket. For simplicity, you wouldn’t need to show all of Whitey, just enough of his back to get the concept and have the rope end anchored to something.

And in small letters, perhaps on the bottom of the page, you could write out your motto “They want to run, they need to run, they love to run.)

Just an idea. It popped into my brain fully formed and thought I’d pass it along. Mom drew a sketch that she could send you but trust me, she is no artist!

Hi everyone. It’s kind of late, but I just wanted to add my two cents. All dogs that have been rescued, and I speak from personal experience here, always know how wonderful their forever homes are and are always so appreciative of those who rescued them. I know how much I love my mom and dad and how much they love me. And while Bella may be sad today, all of her “guys” will not forget her while away working at the glacier, and I know they will have a wonderful reunion when they return. Tummies for everyone. Staff had the tomato starts out on the porch the last few days but had to bring them in tonight. It is supposed to get in the low 30’s the next few nights. It sure doesn’t seem like tomorrow will be May.
