Post Mortem
Admin calls Spence, puts him on speaker.
“Anyone throw anything?” Admin says.
“Nope.”
“Then it’s a victory. You wore the red-checked shirt?”
“Lost it.”
“Serendipity.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You don’t know the story of the three Princes of Serendip? It starts with – “
Click.
Message from Spence: To those who ordered special inscriptions on their signed book: If when it arrives you see you didn’t get exactly what you wanted, let me know – spence.quinn@gmail.com. Books were going by pretty quickly at times.

I wonder just how bad that red-checked shirt was? And where is it now? Chet???
5:24 am on October 4th, 2010
Hey Chet! There really is a tale of the Three Princes of Serendip. I looked it up. Here's the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Princes_of…
Thanks Admin. Have a good trip home Spence.

Serendipity!… We love that word!…snort!… The ability to detect the importance of information revealed accidentally… sneeze!
5:29 am on October 4th, 2010
We are going to settle in and finish TFAT today. Just finished chapter 21. Think this is the best of the series.
Looking forward to hearing more about Houston today.
Rio, Barb ordered the Wallace and Gromit, 3 Amazing Adventures, that you recommended. It is about # 8 in the Queue, so it will be awhile before we get it.
5:30 am on October 4th, 2010
I can't wait for my and Dawson's books to arrive. Hopefully by Wednesday. Yip Yip Yippee!
5:41 am on October 4th, 2010
MagPie!…Tell Barb she does have the ability to shove Wallace and Gromit to the front of the queue if she wants to…snort!
5:54 am on October 4th, 2010
Staff: I think you should write about the farmers combining at night. Your image of "lights crawling across the dark fields" is beautiful.
5:55 am on October 4th, 2010
Rio, Thanks, I think she is going to do that right after Nanny McPhee is shipped.
How is Dan this morning?
6:21 am on October 4th, 2010
Note: All posts today are from mom.
Maggie, I think the note in pink was especially for you. Spence was aware that Barb wanted something different than what was on the sticky note attached to the book, but the store folds didn't want to change it. They seemed to want to rush him a little, but bless his heart, he refused to be rushed, at least while the Plunderers were there.
I have mislaid my camera for the moment and am too comfortable to go look for it right now. Hopefully it is here and not Houston.
Rio, as it turns out, Spence has a Wallace and Grommit type gizmo so that he is dropped into his pants both legs at the same time.
6:22 am on October 4th, 2010
Good Morning All!
I bet Kirby is right that the red-checked shirt's disappearance might have something to do with Chet. Isn't there a tree he likes to dig under and hide things?
Staff: I think B.Stover is right. Those words create a beautiful image.
Riö: I agree Barb and MagPie should put those to the head of the line. We love Wallace and Gromit.
Barb & MagPie: We are also waiting for Nanny McPhee.
Dan's procedure was this morning. We are waiting to hear how it went. They did NOT give him anesthetic. He hates that. He was awake.
OTAS and I are waiting to hear so we can go in and see him today.
6:27 am on October 4th, 2010
Min Pin!….Heh!snort!Heh!…Did you just make that up about his pants or is that something he told you??… snorkel!
6:55 am on October 4th, 2010
Rio: Was Wallander good? I haven't watched it yet.
6:56 am on October 4th, 2010
Another strange sight during harvest is on slightly windy days you will drive by and see a cloud of dust moving across a field. Combining is very dusty work.
But the weird thing is you can't see any reason for the dust to exist. It just moves down the field and when it finally gets to the edge, which is invisible to you on the road, it turns around and all of a sudden the combine emerges from the dust. It has turned into the wind and now the cloud is following it down the field.
Back and forth it goes, visible and invisible depending on the direction it is going and the direction of the wind.
I remember being really confused the first time I saw the dust moving like that. But then I married into farming, I didn't grow up with it.

I think the librarian can post of picture of Fatty Kitty with the red checked shirt. I believe the shirt has gone over the Rainbow Bridge too.
Good for Boston yesterday.
We wanted that home field advantage over the Yankees.
I am sorry Mollypop but that is just the way it is. I suppose you will whup us in three again but we will take any help we can get.
Now we have to wait till Wednesday. Heh heh heh
7:07 am on October 4th, 2010
Alice J. – Wait and see. heh heh heh

Staff: Yes, I remember a picture of that red-checked shirt being used to comfort a cat. Serendipity.

That couldn't be Spence's red-checked shirt. I remember wearing it to Dawson's son's college graduation, before Fatty Kitty took it over.

Meaning it is still a mystery. Che-et?

Mom has another Bookworm problem. The tile on fire is a QU.

Also, Rio, Spence's head is quite nice, not at all pointy.
8:09 am on October 4th, 2010
And he has a 15 foot commute to work.
8:19 am on October 4th, 2010
B., there's still a small glitch in my being able to post about Dad's cahors review. He went to our local store and found they had a third cahors in stock. Dad didn't like the Pigmentum from last time, $11.99, so he bought the first one that he did like and also bought the new one. This way he could now compare those two. Stay tuned.
He's testing Chateau Haut-Serre, $17.99, and Chateau Coustarelle, $19.99.

Staff, We love your descriptions of the fall harvest. We have field corn across the road and had some seed corn and soybeans behind us. The seed corn is much more labor-intensive than feed corn. They bring in a school bus full of day laborers, who are mostly hispanic, when it is time to detassel the corn. They are all covered up – some wear bright yellow long rubber raincoats, and others who don't have the gear, wear black plastic garbage bags over their bodies. They all wear hats. Not quite sure of the reason for the cover-ups.
9:13 am on October 4th, 2010
MinPin!…You haven’t been here long enough to know how the Pointy Head Syndrome came to be…snort!
9:19 am on October 4th, 2010
So tell about the pointy-head syndrome…hissss!
9:44 am on October 4th, 2010
Mollypop: (I've been off the computer.) Does your game allow "qua"?
9:48 am on October 4th, 2010
Sam: Okay.
B&M: It would be interesting to know why the day laborers wear that gear.
ACL: I like the name! (A Catty Librarian.)
9:55 am on October 4th, 2010
Mollypop: "Quim" is British slang. I'd try that first.
10:05 am on October 4th, 2010
Mollypop: If "quim" doesn't work, you have an "a" bottom right column and if your game accepts "qua" that will save you.
If you have to use "qua" I would first do "bob" far right column to see what new letters come down. If nothing useful does, then play the left of the board while the "qu" is dropping. On the left, first you have "hask" and then you have "hex."
10:13 am on October 4th, 2010
B. – No go on quim. Also the game makes 3 tiles have to be pressed and the qu counts as 1. So no 3-letter words will work with the qu.
10:16 am on October 4th, 2010
Would it be better to make words using the 2 columns next to the qu so there might be better chances?
10:22 am on October 4th, 2010
Mollypop: My game allows "qua" all the time. (I use it to get rid of "q"s.) The reason that the "q" and "u" are together is because it would be almost impossible to have them together otherwise. Have you ever tried qua? (I know that this would be an awful first try especially if your game won't accept it.)
Yes, to answer your question. Make words around it to see what new tiles you get.
10:36 am on October 4th, 2010
Hiss!…Why is the Librarian Hisssssing at me? ….grunt!….Strange Behaviour for a Librarian, I’d say…snort!
Molly!…Change the board – get different letters like Stover says!…snort!
10:46 am on October 4th, 2010
ACL, We like your name, too. Maybe Staff or Mr. Staff knows why they cover themselves in plastic. It was hot and it was not raining.
10:47 am on October 4th, 2010
We want to know about pointy-head origin, also.
10:56 am on October 4th, 2010
In the post of Feb. 5, 2010, Chet tells us that Bernie says that he sometimes wants to "crack their pointy heads together." He's referring to Spence and Admin who are arguing about whether or not to post the part of TFAT that gives the results of Chet's biopsy.
10:59 am on October 4th, 2010
Pointy!… I don’t remember when it happened but back some time ago Spencer and Admin were fighting, gawd knows what about, and Chet said something to the effect, “ I just want to bang their pointy heads together!” ….snort!….It was around that time we also learned that Spence could not type very well (now we know why!!) and that he wasn’t very tall (shortie!)….grunt! …And that Boys and Girls, Dogs and Kats is Serendipity!!…snicker!
11:00 am on October 4th, 2010
Stover!…Thanks! …snicker!
11:06 am on October 4th, 2010
B. – You saved the day! Qua worked!
11:08 am on October 4th, 2010
Mollpop: Yes! I think qua counts as a three-letter word even though it takes just two tiles.
11:10 am on October 4th, 2010
Whew!…I was sweating bullets over that one!…yipppeeee!
11:17 am on October 4th, 2010
The first episode of the third season of Lie To Me is on tonight. Here it's on the same time as The Event but I can get that On Demand.
Rio: Did you like Wallander? (I asked this earlier.)
11:19 am on October 4th, 2010
That must be right around the time we came to the blog, because we remember reading the results and the prior discussion about it. Must have missed the pointy-head part. Thanks for clearing that up for us.
We have to get back to our reading. There is no putting it down at this point-chapter 27.
11:22 am on October 4th, 2010
Book!… Who here has read End Of Story?….snort!…We started that one this weekend and of course it’s been very hard to put down since then….grunt!
Wallander!…I lost interest and never really kept up with the story line…snort!
11:38 am on October 4th, 2010
I read End of Story. It has a female lead who is a writer/teacher right? When Wallander was on before I couldn't get interest in it. I probably won't watch this series either.
11:53 am on October 4th, 2010
Prison!…Yes she is teaching a writing class to a few inmates….snort!…One of them writes just like the Charming Mr. Abrahams…heh!
12:02 pm on October 4th, 2010
Stover!… I have Hawaii 5-0 music running through my head this afternoon!…snort! ….It may be time to watch that second episode when my friend gets home and finishes all the stupid stuff she does…..grunt!
Stover!… I just read the part where she cut her hand on the iron cross that’s on top of the island…snort!… I always wonder if little things like this are going to turn into something big later on….wheeze!
12:08 pm on October 4th, 2010
Rio, Barb read it several months ago. She enjoyed the character development, and like all PA books, it was hard to put down. She had a little trouble identifying with some of the main character's choices. See what you think later on.
We are nearing the end – chapter 30. Had to stop reading for a few minutes to draw it out.
12:13 pm on October 4th, 2010
End of Story: I agree with Barb on the main character's choices. I remember thinking the same thing about the cross.
12:15 pm on October 4th, 2010
I think that the third episode of Hawaii 5-0 is also on tonight. Why do they have everything on at the same day and time? Good thing we have On Demand.
12:27 pm on October 4th, 2010
Competing!…Maybe they are all competing for ratings or sumthing….grunt!
12:58 pm on October 4th, 2010
I am not sure about the detasseling but maybe it has something to do with pollinating the corn. If they are going to get covered in pollen they might want to protect themselves. Pollen never comes out. I got some pollen from a lily on myself two years ago and had to toss that blouse. Here is a link, if you want a summer job.

Rio. We read End of Story a while back also. The plotting is excellent and it is hard to put down. Some of the choices made are questionable too. A portion of the book is set in Canada, where PA lived for awhile, so that part should be pretty authentic (although a bit gritty as well). We are about to start A Perfect Crime, although my dad may decide to save it until we get back from Vermont. Wookie
1:19 pm on October 4th, 2010
Wookie!…Tell your man to start the book!…grunt!… Waiting is such a questionable choice…heh!
2:21 pm on October 4th, 2010
We just want to say a special thanks to SQ/PA for the visit in Houston. Mom really enjoyed getting to meet him and hear about the development of Chet & Bernie. And listening to him read the beginning of the book makes Mom want to get the audio version of the series. Macy's Mom & Dad had listened to the audio of at least one of the books and really liked it.
We are also Hawaii 5-0 fans here. We really like the character of Dano. Scott Cahn is doing a great job with it. And the music and scenery are fantastic. Mom does remember the original series and does remember that she did like it. Special effects and filming is just so much more advanced now and this show is really flashy.
It's kind of a let down now that we don't have the release of the book to look forward too. Hopefully, book 4 won't be a whole year away. And who knows, maybe Chet will remember where he is with the Astrid case.
2:27 pm on October 4th, 2010
And Staff, that was awesome writing about the combining on the farm. It was very visual and we could just picture the combine appearing out of the dust cloud!!
Melanie, hope Dan's procedure went well today.

Over all, it was a super time. I took the pug pictures with my phone and don't know how to post them.
From the top:
Mr. PSQA came out, talked, signed, chatted, and posed.
Today is a little like the day after Christmas. You still have the goodies, but there is the letdown of the anticipation that was built up. Very worthwhile trip.
3:19 pm on October 4th, 2010
We also read End of Story. Like most PA books, very interesting, yet leaves you feeling quite unsettled.
3:21 pm on October 4th, 2010
I dunno, but in the close up photos, PA's head does look a little pointy to me.
I'm just saying…..
3:24 pm on October 4th, 2010
You know, since Spence hates to fly so much, maybe he could fly the winner to the publishers. And if it so happens to be in NYC, well, I for one would be willing to make that sacrifice.
(Assuming, A, that it is approved, and B, that I, Wolfie, actually won.) That's a lot of assumptions, but I have fleeting moments of optimism.
3:25 pm on October 4th, 2010
If you haven't guessed yet, I have a pretty good title in mind, even if I do say so myself.
3:40 pm on October 4th, 2010

Wolfie!…You get the Point too! I saw it in the Quilt photo myself!…Heh!heh!heh!…snort!
Wolfie!…At last some Title Competition!…woooo!
3:50 pm on October 4th, 2010
Only in Texas would they have a prison museum. Thanks for the clarification, for a second there I was having trouble connecting that to PA/SQ. In terms of interesting prison signs, there is a great sign near the New Mexico State Penitentiary between Albuquerque and Santa Fe that says something to the effect — Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers; State Prison Nearby. It's hilarious. Wookie
3:55 pm on October 4th, 2010
Wookie!….I laughed out loud at the Prison Photo…snort!…and I never laugh. The connection is very evident in at least two books that the Charming Mr. Abrahams has written…heh!

Allergies!…Spencer must not suffer from allergies. Look how he’s practically got his head right in that Begonia….snort!…Thank goodness for that what with all his other disabilities…snuffle!

Stover!…You were so right about Hawaii 5-0….snort!…It was really good and the team is forming and caring about each other!… sneeze!…We’ve still got the music in our head! The only downfall of the show so far!…cough!
Hot!…Someone whipped up a meatloaf tonight but she threw in a whole can of HOT jalapenos in the mix…grunt!…I think she does this stuff so I won’t beg for any of it….grumble! …Just the smell is making me huff….ach!

Poor Rio…..although I can't say I blame her!

Will catch up tomorrow. Went to see Dan with OTAS. He looks good. You don't want to know how much liquid they drained from around his lungs. Especially if you are eating.
His breathing has improved. They are figuring out what is causing the collection of fluid. He should be back in Rehab in a couple of days.
Zonked and hitting the bed.
Move OVER Patsy!
4:54 pm on October 4th, 2010
Glad Dan is doing better.
Finished the book tonight. LOVED IT! Just sorry it is over, but we did spread it out over a whole week. It is the best!
Hope to hear more from Macy tomorrow.
Spence is a lefty and he wears Ralph Lauren Polo shirts at the signings.

Rio, about the blog, he said that we probably meant to say blunder instead of plunder. He said the quilt was the 2nd coolest thing that had happened in his career. We're #2!!! We try harder.
He said that the blog has taken on a life of its own. I should have recorded him, because I Keep thinking of things he said that I am not sure he really said, or maybe I read it somewhere, or maybe I made it up.

Melanie!…Oh pur dear Melanie!….snort!…You and your family are going through the mill these days. Our hearts go out to you, Zoe, and the boys at this time….snuff!…It is so hard when a loved one is very ill….sigh…. Heart Breaking doesn’t even describe it all…sob!…You just want them to get better so badly! Get some sleep my dear and know that we are all here for you and I am diligently saying my Pug Prayers for Dan The Man!…gruff!
5:10 pm on October 4th, 2010
Wookie, every prison that I have ever been near has a do not pick up hitchhikers sign. Perhaps in the south they think that we might not notice the prison outfit and assume that the person was just a run of the mill serial killer. WE do not pick up hitchhikers, no matter what they are wearing, including nuns!
5:11 pm on October 4th, 2010
Wha!…I think Alice snuck in that word "pur" up above, I have no idea where that came from!..grunt!

Thank you Macy for the on going reports.

Min Pin!…Did he say what the Number One coolest thing was regarding his writing career?…snort!…Not including his wife and four children! They have to be way up there on the scale of very cool things I would imagine! ..heh!

Hee hee, that is funny, Macy. MT has an old prison that is now a museum. They give tours to schoolchildren and think it amusing to lock them in the cells for a moment – or so I've heard.

5:34 pm on October 4th, 2010
Hey everybody! Tonight was Mom's late night at the library, but I'm finally here!
For everyone wondering about detasseling, Mom grew up in Iowa and spent her summers detasseling, walking beans, putting up hay, painting fences, counting seeds, showing hogs, and all that other good farm stuff. She says when she was detasseling, she never wore raingear or trash bags — she was more interested in getting a tan! — but she has a couple guesses why others might: 1) If it's early morning the corn is dewey, so they might be trying to avoid getting wet OR 2) Corn leaves are razor-like, so by the end of the day you end up with teeny little cuts — kind of like paper cuts — all over your arms.
5:36 pm on October 4th, 2010
Kattie!…So Hissing is the new Shushing at the library these days???…chorkel! …As a well educated Kat what do you think of this “Blunder vs Plunder” story that Spence keeps propagating across the country…grump!…Stover said “One just Plunders On”…NOT …”One just Blunders On”…dammit! …She knows the difference in the meaning of the words for gosh sakes!…gah!… The blog records show this to be true! …wheeze!
5:38 pm on October 4th, 2010
Rio: Mom told you what the other cool thing was — I guess you were too busy conniping to remember what she wrote!
5:49 pm on October 4th, 2010
Kirby!…So you are going to make me go back to that painful Labor Day when your “mom” drug out her narration for the whole day….snort!…Which actually turns out to be much kinder than the way these guys have drug it on for over a day now. My sincere apologies to your gal Kirby…grunt!
5:54 pm on October 4th, 2010
Rio: If Mom had put everything into one loooong post at 6 0'clock in the morning you still would have found something to complain about! Besides, it was her story and it was up to her to tell it her own way! Same with the other Plunderers — and I like what they had to say and how they said it. The only way you'll get it just right is to do it yourself — which won't be easy if you won't leave your yard!!!
6:06 pm on October 4th, 2010
Yeah, what kirby said.
6:18 pm on October 4th, 2010

Do not take Anything I say on this here blog Personally….snort! …I love you guys, ALL of you guys!…snort!… Gee I even apologized to Kirby and he is still mad as hell!…wheeeee!…My writing must be improving immensely…snicker!…This is a writers blog and I like to write creatively in my Puggish spare time…snort!
Kirby!…You don’t have to remind me that I can not leave my yard!…snort! …That really pisses me off all the time!…dammit!…I have resigned myself to never meeting the Charming Mr. Abrahams ever in my entire lifetime…grunt!…That’s why I rely on you guys to tell me what’s what out there in the real world…sniffle!

8:31 pm on October 4th, 2010
Rio, Mom did think of something else…she asked why Chet's ear color was changed in the final cover…did it have to do with the movie rights and making it a less subtle mismatch? He didn't think so, just thought the publisher thought it made a better picture. We think it is better with the dark ear. More of a silhouette (know that's not spelled right, but you know what we mean). The other books had the same effect with Chet and Bernie and the color all in the background.
8:57 pm on October 4th, 2010
Not less subtle, but MORE subtle…duh
