Post Mortem
“How did yesterday’s appearance go?” says Admin.
“No one threw anything,” Spence says.
“That’s what we like to hear. This was at the Wequassett resort on beautiful Pleasant Bay at the elbow of Cape Cod?”
“Exactly. A luncheon sponsored by Where the Sidewalk Ends, an excellent book store in Chatham. Two other writers spoke – Maggie Shipstead and Ann Leary. They were great.”
“Did you tell the one-review story?”
“I hadn’t planned to, but yes.”
“So we’re talking off-the-cuff?”
“Very much so.”
“Uh-oh.”
Welcome Mosey Martin, Hobbes, Diamond (Didi) Diva Valentina, Jasper Valentine, Bella, couch dude, Doobie; and Hubert!

Gooood morning, everyone! Glad OFA’s appearance went well (even if it wasn’t close to us). And wowser, would you look at all of Chet’s new friends! Welcome.
Rebecca, You are still in our thoughts and pawrayers.
Have a satisfying Saturday.
8:57 am on August 2nd, 2013
Good morning all. Glad the day went well yesterday, Spence. Hope you had a good turn out and a great lunch. Just being on Cape Cod would be wonderful.
8:59 am on August 2nd, 2013
Have we ever heard the one-review story?
Good morning all.
9:01 am on August 2nd, 2013
HOH: We may have a “satisfying Saturday” tomorrow….
9:03 am on August 2nd, 2013
Good to hear everything went well, Spence, although Admin’s last remark somehow makes us wonder what came next.
Good morning to everyone!
WoooHooo we are off today for a 4 day weekend and a beautiful one it is going to be.
It’s SeaFair! No Blue Angels (sob) but it will still be fun.
Back on Tuesday. See youse then.
Yeah, HOH, B is right. You are jumping the gun here.
9:03 am on August 2nd, 2013
Gah!!!! B: You’re right, We’d better get the trash out 🙁
9:04 am on August 2nd, 2013
Frisky Friday!
Bella, please know that we are thinking of you and MaBella….may you cherish your happy memories of your uncle. Mom knows how difficult it is to lose a sibling.
9:05 am on August 2nd, 2013
We’ve got it! Since mom put her foootsies in it, have a fearless Friday.
9:19 am on August 2nd, 2013
Howler’s Mom: Don’t work too hard.
Rebecca: Thinking of you and your family.
Thank you, HOH. Now I can start my day.
Better go…lots to do.
9:32 am on August 2nd, 2013
We have a young cousin who lived in Albuquerque all her life. Her parents were killed in a car accident, and Carly was moved to the reservation to live with family there.
She spent every evening out in the front yard watching the sky. My aunt was worried and thought it was depression. She went out to sit with Carly and was surprised to see her smiling and laughing.
Looking at the stars, Carly explained that while living in the city, she could only see some of her family, but now in the silent desert, she could see thousands of her relatives dancing in the sky. And it made her happy because she knew neither her parents nor she was ever alone.
We hope Bella and Bev can find the new star in the sky, and watch him dance with his family. Peace and comfort to you.
9:34 am on August 2nd, 2013
Mom wants to thank some one ( B and Masquers) for saving her bacon but we haven’t seen any yet. She says her problem is because we woke her up @ o’dark thirty two days in a row. We pointed out she’s taken out trash and cleaned the peck o’ parrots. All she said was, “Nap time.”
9:40 am on August 2nd, 2013
Rebecca — thoughts and prayers with you and your family. As always, T&G’s mom said it best.
9:45 am on August 2nd, 2013
I’m always glad when no one throws anything at Spence although since he keeps mentioning it…gives me ideas for if I ever get to attend one of his appearances.
I don’t remember the one-review story. We’ve had way more than one on this blog.
Rebecca: My thoughts and prayers are with you, MaBelle and family.
Masquers: Your long weekend plans sound great. Enjoy.
9:47 am on August 2nd, 2013
Beautiful Day here. Mechanical Engineer Nephew came by at 8 am to do some things we have promised NOT to do (climb ladders) and reach high to put clocks back on the wall (he’s tall).
It’s a two coco day, and I think I’m going to put on a long sleeve shirt. Just the right weather for lettuce growing.
Thinking of you, Bev. It has been a difficult year for you and your family. Bella, take care of yourself. Leave time to laugh and talk to the new star in the sky.
9:47 am on August 2nd, 2013
Ditto Wookie’s Dad. Amalia expresses it so well. Rebecca, peace to you and your family.
Bee, the one review story is that Spence was talking to a young reader group who had read one of the PA books. One of the boys said he thought the book was “pretty good”. That is the one review that Spence treasures.
9:54 am on August 2nd, 2013
Melanie – we all know your penchant for assigning letter names to your near and dear. YSAS, OTAS , GLAD, etc.
Did you realize that Mechanical Engineering Nephew would be MEN? Oh, wouldn’t he just LOVE that!
9:57 am on August 2nd, 2013
Love one review and MEN. Now we will let mom take a quick nap. Oh, will try to show ya’ll clean peck later.
10:29 am on August 2nd, 2013
Rebecca: May peace be with you and your family. So sorry to hear of your loss.
10:34 am on August 2nd, 2013
T&G, Snort! I keep calling all them guys. Otherwise I’d be calling them “Hey, Sweetie”. They don’t seem to like that for some reason.
On iPhoto I have over 8000 pictures. snicker
I am actually using two of them today.
The septic dude is coming, and when the painters painted the house, they very carefully painted over the markings that pinpointed the opening for the septic tank.
Snort! We looked at the plot and it said “Not to scale”. I went in and found two photos of the Raven digging out the septic tank top (with the help of Mac and Ros).
The septic dude now has a chance of finding the thing.
10:46 am on August 2nd, 2013
Princess Sam: Sorry I didn’t get back with an answer to your request for an explanation of my letters yesterday. I was on the road all day and think that I didn’t even touch the computer. I’ve just read yesterday’s post and am happy to fill you in on the letters. Molly’s mom knows about them because my dad said jokingly to her that I have more letters after my name than he does. He has his degrees (he never uses the letters though, nor do I) My letters are CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) which I earned about a year ago and TDI (Therapy Dog International). I passed that evaluation last Sunday and now can continue my hospital/nursing home visits as an official therapy dog. I want to do library visits so that youngsters can read to me. There is a Reading to Rover program which has had great results with kids who don’t want to read in class or to a person because they are afraid of making a mistake. They read to dogs who do not criticize, correct, or tease if a mistake is made. This helps the kids build confidence and develops a like for reading. I do visit a university during registration and testing periods to help the students relax during breaks. Now that I’m registered I can get requests to visit lots of new places. I’m excited.
10:59 am on August 2nd, 2013
Good Morning All
Rebecca and Bev, You are in our thoughts and prayers. We love what T&G posted. The sky in NM is beautiful and filled with stars at night as long as you are away from the city lights.
11:00 am on August 2nd, 2013
TYB, CGC, TDI!! That would even confuse Melanie.
11:05 am on August 2nd, 2013
Mom is all happy because a skunk was caught in the trap last night. Animal Control will be out this morning to take it away. IMHO This is all unnecessary and stupid.
Melanie, Good luck with the septic dude. We had ours done this past Spring. Years and years ago, mom had them put a riser on it so it can be located easily.
11:29 am on August 2nd, 2013
Melanie, How can house paint cover up where you dig up for septic tank? Isn’t that out in the yard?
We agree with everyone who loves the story T&G told about the stars being our family members dancing. We will think of that from now on when we look up at the stars, which we do often.
12:01 pm on August 2nd, 2013
TYB, it is not the easiest thing to get your TDI. Congratulations!
Barb&MagPie, our Eleanor was CGC, TDI. Most of the rest of the Pack are CGC.
Siber-H, what is a riser?
O’Howlers, it is out in the yard. Under 18 inches of dirt. The Raven had four points, two on the house, two on the fence. If you took two pieces of string? X marked the spot.
The Septic guy gave up. I have a call in to the Board of Health. They are supposed to get a plot of “As Built Measurements” after the tank is installed. We will see.
He would not dig where I told him to! Snicker.
I will be taking out the ol’ dowsing rods and see if I can find the top handle. Then we will have another nephew dig.
12:07 pm on August 2nd, 2013
When our Aretha crossed the bridge last fall, mom’s son sent her this. Inside it says: “shining for the one who always be in your heart.”

12:08 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Siber, We had one of those above the ground things put in also. No more digging when the septic tank must be emptied. Is that what you are calling risers?
We are guessing that neither Poncho nor Lefty are CGC. Neither are we. 🙂
12:11 pm on August 2nd, 2013
But what is a riser? Metal? This goes in the stockade where Mac and Frank tend to mark.
12:12 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rebecca!…I am so sorry to hear about your uncle’s passing…sniffle!….I am sending You, Bev and The Coach my deepest sympathies.
12:26 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Yes, Risers are metal. It is a attachment to the lid of the septic tank that makes it very easy to locate the opening to the septic tank. A bit of dirt is put on top of it, but when it comes time to dig for the septic tank, they don’t have to dig very far to reach the riser and thus the septic tank. Our riser has survived years of dogs, including me, tramping around it.
Melanie, I am surprised your septic tank company hasn’t tried to sell you a riser before this because all of the companies here push them.
12:27 pm on August 2nd, 2013
FYI, Titles Newfoundland Dogs can achieve . .
WD Water Dog
WRD Water Rescue Dog
WRDX Water Rescue Dog Exhalent
DD Draft Dog
TDD Team Draft Dog
CD Companion Dog (Obedience)
CDX Companion Dog Excellent
TD Tracking Dog
TDX Tracking Dog Excellent (Newfoundlands are trained to become Water Recover Dogs)
They also compete in Agility (against other Newfoundlands, snicker.)
These are just a few of the things these gentle giants are capable of!
12:28 pm on August 2nd, 2013
I wonder if risers come in the form of fire hydrants . .
12:30 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Fellow Sibers, Yes, What you described is what all the septic companies here call risers.
No more digging down to get to the septic tank.
12:36 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Siber, ours is cement lid with metal handles on it. it sits above ground. This makes it very very easy to locate, and there is no more digging involved.
12:52 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Ours is a cement lid with metal handles on it also, but it is buried under a bit of dirt. My folks have always known where it is located so there has never been any problem finding it.
1:01 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rebecca, please add our sympathies to all the other warm wishes here.
Heat advisory here, will feel like 110. Mom not moving out of a/c, no way.
Melanie, WD Exhalent? Does that mean they can breathe under water? And were Mac and Ros helping the Raven dig or you look for pictures? Could you please post the current Pack roster, as mom can’t remember who has crossed.
Finally, something good about living in a metromess. No septic tanks!
1:10 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Mom’s septic tank was a snap to find. One small earthquake (3.1) and the pipe separated from the tank. The ensuing bubbly guck gave her a gooood clue 🙁
1:12 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Macy, it is a little known fact that Newfies can breathe underwater.
We have five with us.
Mattie
Mac
Ros
Frank
Grace.
All the others are in our hearts.
In news of a sort that goe along with that . .
Tomorrow we will be playing with Bess’s six and a half week old Grand pups!

Rio! Heh heh heh!
1:44 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rio, the letters behind each of our names is HHHH
(Howling Huskies Having a Hoot)
1:45 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Good ones Rio.
We had a septic lid that was above ground with a big handle on it. We had a big flower pot sitting on top of it to partially hide it. Now that we are back in town, no more septic pumping to deal with.
1:56 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We are Royals. We will NOT discuss septic tanks.
We love Rio’s titles. And we think Melanie missed one of the Newf titles – DRIP – Drool Really Impressive Puddles. All of the pack have top rankings in that field.
We gotta go apply more duct tape to Mama’s feet. We did let her up for lunch and “necessaries”, but now it’s back to the work table. At least she trult loves going to work…. not like when she worked at CrazyLadyLand.
2:23 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Wookie’s initials, as I recall, were OHMSS (on her majesty’s secret service). We thought Wookie would have made a great therapy dog but he could never pass his CGC test. He excelled at all the elements save for one, which was staying put when mom left. Some long running separation anxiety just made that impossible for him to do.
We hope to have Teddy certified as a CGC and as a therapy dog when he gets a bit older; right now his main initials are DCMLFD (as in don’t call me late for dinner).
2:29 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rebecca: take care. You and your family are in our hearts today
2:58 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Thank you for the kind thoughts and words shared on this here blog and via email. My uncle’s passing was unexpected, yet peaceful. It is the second sibling my mother has lost since the beginning of the year. She is very close to her brother and each of her sisters. My heart goes out to my aunt. I hurt at the thought of her sleeping without him by her side. My uncle was a horseman so I have no doubt he was greeted by his sister, his mother, his father and many, many horses on the other side of the Bridge.
3:09 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Luwking Wose: If you are lurking, that can only mean one thing—you need me, me, me to smooch for the weekend. I have my sparkly pink backpack ready to go complete with glitter and Swedish fish. I also packed some of Mick’s shine for Professor Griz. My Four-legged and I will be there when you get home from work. We’ll let ourselves in—we had a key made. Head bumps to my very, most, special best friend.
3:18 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We are an impressive bunch!
I was going to say something else, but got to laughing. Now all is out of my brain.
3:41 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Melanie: perhaps you were about to comment on the vast storehouse of knowledge. From poetry to septic systems!
4:20 pm on August 2nd, 2013
I agree with Wookie. When Barb took me to obedience class I was good with the heel and sit, but not the sit stay or the long down. There is no way she could walk away from me, and leave me in a down for 3 minutes. I go where she goes. I don’t even stay when she goes into another room inside the house. Whatever room she is in, that’s where you will find me. They don’t call us English Shadows for nuttin!
4:20 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We do have other letters behind our names: DETCY
(Didn’t eat the chickens yet.)
4:26 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Bella – thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Have a good weekend, Everybody.
5:13 pm on August 2nd, 2013
OH: So proud of ya’ll, so far. How is the combination great escape/chicken run coming?
6:02 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Bella, we send our deepest condolences.
6:21 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Dear Bella, Sympathy to you and Bev. Dawson and I know what it is like to lose a brother.
Our septic has a white tube about 12″ long sticking up from the backyard. It used to be out in the open where we could trip over it but now it is under the deck. We had the fantastic brothers who built the deck make a special trap door kind of place that we can remove so the septic guy can get to it. Smart eh?
Today we have been working on storm doors. We needed a storm door for the new east facing deck so I bought a new one for the front door. A fancy beveled one. And we will put the old front storm door on the new deck. So we have to install two doors and after we got the old storm door off the front I saw we had to prime and paint the surround. So we had to find the paint and primer. And ladders. And the drop cloth and the paint can opener thingy. Yikes.
They are primed. That is all for today. I am too old for this.
6:55 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We are also so sorry for your loss, Rebecca. Hope Bev and Coach, as well as you, can remember the great times.
LOVE Rio’s and Teddy’s initials! Beau’s should be BTBP (Bible Thumping Black Pug)!
Rio, Mom has a donation for either the auction or the boutique. She will email your friend sometime this weekend and ask her advice. If she thinks boutique, Mom will get a pic and description sent to Snowhook right away.
7:05 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We love what Chet posted on Facebookie “Is Friday the best day for humans or what?” Yes, Chet, it is most definitely the best day!

I do not have to water the gardens tomorrow!
I like this weather. It is beautiful during the day and rains at night.
8:34 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Melanie, This weather is making our grass keep growing. Whenever it’s nice outside, Mom and Pop have to run those loud mowers again.
8:35 pm on August 2nd, 2013
HOH, we are sort of getting used to those little birds. For now.
9:14 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Howlers!…Did youse guys ever watch that movie we told you about called “Chicken Run”?…snort!
9:20 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Well!…Well, well, well!…snort!….We were all sitting on the back porch hoping it would rain, but it did not…sniff!…So we came in and what to my wandering pug eyes should I see? The Rockies are ahead of the Pirates in the bottom of the 7th..WooooHOOOO!
9:21 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We were up before the sun, again! So, for now, nighty night.
9:33 pm on August 2nd, 2013
No, Rio. We still didn’t watch the movie, but we’re hoping to see these chickens run. Heh!
Early night for us. Good night.
9:37 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Good night all. We are turning in too.
9:41 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Friday!….Hey, it’s Friday night! Where is everyone going so soon…grump!
9:58 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Unbelievable!…This photo has shown up on the blog 3 nights in a row all while we are watching the baseball game…snort!…I think Agent Wookie is trying to tell me something…wheeze!…But I cannot hear him…sniffle!
10:06 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rockies!….
…. Winnit! Wooo!…It has been a very long time since I got to say that…sniff!
10:35 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Congratulations to TYB for getting all those initials behind his name.
Congrats to the Newfs and Rio for their intials too.
And lastly, congrats to the Rockies for their “W”.
G’day to LizF and good night to the rest.

Rio: The Wookster might be trying to tell you that you can never go wrong with plaid.
10:42 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Dawson!…You sound like you need a long vacation…snort!… Have you opened Staff’s box yet?…heh!
10:43 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Mr.Tenzing!…Wookie’s plaid bowtie is outrageous!…heh!heh!…I am hoping that Teddy the Ruff Rider will grow into it…snorkel!
10:51 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rio: If the the Theives have anything to do with it—which they are hoping beyond hope is the case—it will skulls and cross bones for the Ruff Ridger. My treat money is on Wookie’s sense of style prevailing.
10:54 pm on August 2nd, 2013
What!?…Skulls and cross bones!…What?!…sniff!…Teddy’s Maw will never let that fashion faux paw happen…grunt!
10:55 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Food!…It sounds like Teddy enjoys his food very much. He is a glutton after my own heart…heh!heh!
11:03 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Our Lady has been so busy we haven’t had much time on this here blog this week, but we wanted to follow up on a Teddy Update from earlier this week. Devil Dog—we’ve be called that before. We’ve also been called: Evil Doer Dogs, Vicious Beasties, Theives, Outlaws, Dirty Wrottens, and Damnit. We answer to each name.
We’ve been spending time with Teddy in the middle of the night teaching him everything he needs to know about being a dog. We typlically leave around 5:30ish in the morning (Teddy time) to get back home for our Kennel’s middle of the night howl. He was hesitant to really dive into Devil Dog 101, but once he did he was a quick study. We are proud of him, so very proud.
11:05 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Pancho!…heh!snort!heh!…Wookie’s Maw and Paw hardly have a chance in hell…chorkel!
11:12 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We secretly think Wookie’s Paw has a bit of a wild streak. We have intel that leaves us to believe he has a crooked halo. Our guess is he has a tie with skulls, crossbones or both on it. And, have we mentioned how pretty Wookie’s Maw is? Our Lady said as much, so it is the truth with a capital T.
11:17 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Maw!…You never mentioned Wookie’s Maw being a beauty queen..sniff!…How could you NOT mention something like that…grunt!…I hope her influence on Teddy prevails. As I would hate to see Teddy go the way of the Super Model Spy, Alice…groan!
11:25 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rio: Don’t knock it. Chances are very good that one or both of us is going to be clad in a kat dog blanket this year. Our Lady bought it on clearance specifically because one of the kats reminds her of Alice. We’ve come to terms with it. We recommend you do the same.
11:26 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Giles!…snort!heh!heh!…Giles, the creepy butler on “Whodunnit”, is playing a very bad guy on “Burn Notice”…snort!…Those Reality Shows are all such a farce…heh!heh!…Sammie would be the first to say “I told youse so”…chorkel!
11:28 pm on August 2nd, 2013
What? What is wrong with being a super model spy? Huh? Teddy will have style style style. Natasha will help.
Who’s a good dog?
11:28 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Thieves!….Aaaaauuughh…No.
11:29 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Alice!…Gah!…I knew she was spying on our conversation…grump!
11:34 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Femme Fatales are a must whether they be a two-legged like Wookie’s maw or a four-legged like Natasha or Alice M.
11:37 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Gasp!….Wookie’s Maw is NOT a Femme Fatale…grunt!..NO, NO, Never!…wheeze!…That is krazy-talk…grunt!
11:39 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Rio: She’s a beauty. Our minds won’t be changed. Plus, she can drive the Wookiemobile like she stole it—we like that in a two-legged.
11:47 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Wow!…I am re-thinking my whole impression of Wookie’s Maw at this point…sniff!…Here I thought she was a Quilt Making Gourmet Chef. Now I know she is a Glamorous Race Car Driver who knows how to use a needle…grunt!
11:47 pm on August 2nd, 2013
heh heh heh. Alice was in tonight, but she was in hiding. We thought she was out and I was wandering around outside the house calling and calling.
I finally came in and she was right there. Sniff. What a little sneaker she is.
11:48 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Post at the same time! GAH.
Say goodnight Rio
11:49 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Plus, she has beautiful skin and Wookie’s sense of style.
11:54 pm on August 2nd, 2013
Thieves!…A deadly combination!…snort!…I know in my heart she must be on the side for “good”…grunt!….And she is the one who gave Wookie his initial training. That is most certainly why he ended up being the most Excellent Secret Agent ’00Wookie’…sniff!
11:58 pm on August 2nd, 2013
We thought we were all on the side of good, the side against the evils in the world and the marauding goats. Some of us have to put a dew claw over the line between good and evil for the greater good, no? And, some of us just like to drive fast and look good while doing it.
12:03 am on August 3rd, 2013
Mr.Staff has come in to say he is going to bed. The Twins are in the 11th inning and have run out of position players and so Gardy has to make his pitcher bat.
Sounds like poor planning to me.
Later gator.
12:04 am on August 3rd, 2013
Good!…Alice has always been “iffy” in the good Kategory….heh!…But that was before your time on the blog Thieves…sniff!…You are right about the rest of it, the greater good an all….snort! …Will our small group make a difference? Who knows…snuffle!
