Post Mortem

“How did the talk go?” Spence says. “Anyone throw anything?”

“Not on target,” says Admin.

“Did you ever find the red-checked shirt?”

“Nope.”

(And he never will, at least if we mean by that a red-checked shirt in one piece.)

“So what did you wear?”

“The one with the blue stripes.”

“Those wide blue stripes?”

“They’re not wide.”

“What did you talk about?”

“This and that.”

“The one-review thing?”

“Yup.”

“Amazon?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Pre-school?”

“Oh my God! I told them I was going to circle back to it but I never did.”

“Circle back? Were you roaming around the room like Maury Povich?”

“That’s not funny.”

“I hear those other two writers, Lynn Kiele Bonasia and Brunonia Barry, are pretty charming.”

“So?”

“I’m just saying,” says Spence. “Did you read anything?”

“The tennis lesson scene in Thereby Hangs A Tail.”

“How did that go over?”

“They seemed to like Chet.”

A breeze springs up behind me. That would be my tail.

For people at the talk who were interested in the cover of To Fetch A Thief:

Admin wonders if B. Stover has read a book called Montaillou by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. He says she might like it.

I love listening in to Spence and Admin. (I don't understand the Maury Povich reference.) And of course they liked Chet! I'm glad the conference went well.

I was reading the post today and I think maybe Admin is P.A. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? If it is Rio has to be nicer to Admin. Or as nice as it is possible for that pugnacious little dog to be.

    Heh

I looked up that book Spence recommends to BStover and I will leave it to her. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie sounds like an interesting guy although I think I might prefer a book about his father in the resistance during WW2.

I just noticed the message under the TFAT cover. I've never heard of the book. I'll look into it. Thank you for the reference.

I ordered Montaillou. Here's a sentence from it: Ladurie is describing the 14th-century village: "Below [the chateau on top of the plateau] stood the houses, one above the other, often adjoining, but sometimes separated by small gardens where pigs illegally disported themselves." Wonderful!

I also learned a new word: Swingle. They grew hemp and the women had to swingle (clean by beating) and comb it in the winter.

I don't think anyone should shy away from the book just because it has footnotes. It's an historical study of a certain period and place but it seems to put the reader right on the spot. Thank you admin.

Now it sounds better B. I like to read history, I admit. I thought it would be boring, but if he can put in a sentence that pigs 'illegally disported themselves" it can't be boring. Heh.

Darn, no sharks or Mounties . . .

But the audiences aim was off, so that's a good thing.

And B. Stover got a SHOUT OUT! Excellent.

Riö, loved the "refresh, read then post." Ummm, I'm sort of guilty on that one myself.

Wöökie, can you slowly take the ARC out of Grandpa's hands while he's napping? Oh, and I totally agree on your musical classics.

Siber-H and Wölfie, I think they would allow him crayons.

Good news folks! He's not out of the woods yet, BUT the doc thinks Dan is doing much better than he thought he would!! Dan is awake and somewhat coherent. I called the ICU and the nurse let him talk for one minute. We put Zoë on the phone and she heard his voice, laughed and then burst into tears. . .

I finished the 1 minute up; he sounds good.

They will now wean him off drugs and hopefully go from an oxygen mask to just the nose thingies. If they can do that today, he'll be sitting up with his feet on the floor. Amazing. I mean they had his heart OUT of his chest to work on it. Whew.

Me too, Melanie..I am curious about what the pups weigh. My mom always says, "let sleeping dogs lie" even if it is just one adult dog.

The tennis lesson scene? In THAT? I'm gonna hafta read that book again! Siber H. do you remember it? Darn this brain.

Speaking of brains:Macy MinPin I loved Oblivion also. The best PA book I've read so far. Admittedly, I'm a bit leery of his books because the Tutor scared the crap out of me. I had to stay up all night reading it before I got to a safe place.

Speaking of Organs (were we?): Melanie, how's our patient this morning? Oh. I just refreshed as per Rio's instructions (so smart, that pug) and got an update. Hip hip hooray. Hang in there Zoe, You've been so strong throughout this whole ordeal. A few (or a lot of) relief tears are understandable.

In chapter 18 of THAT Ganz is getting a tennis lesson at his tennis club when Bernie and Chet go to interview him. Chet catches some balls and keep jumping over the net, spinning in midair to face the other way before landing.

Hey!… I’ve been gone all day long!….snort!… First her best friend came over and took us to the farmers market where I rumbled with a Golden Retriever! …grunt!… I don’t think he was nearly as big as Wookie, but it felt good to give him a piece of my mind anyway! …heh!…He did not know anything about the ARC…sniff!…So he says! Then we visited her mom and then we all went shopping for props and twenties style clothing… snicker!…Apparently, her best friend is having a great big Murder Mystery Party set in the roaring twenties next month!…snort!… So all day we were in and out of junk shops looking for all sorts of strange things…whew!

Early!… I tried to post early this morning, but my computer was not cooperating! …dammit!…I’m hoping it is working better now…snort!…Anyway, here is what I was going to post first thing this morning just because Alice really messed with my head… grunt!

    *********************************************

Alice!…You are just now starting to "think"!?…snort!…Where in the hell have you been for the past 4 months or so??… grunt!…It absolutely astounds me at times the complete lack of paying attention that you do… grump!

Admin?….Be nicer to Admin!?… grunt!…Are you out of your cotton pickin’ mind!??… cough!…When pigs fly my dear, when pigs fly!… snort!snort!

I have been meaning to tell you I did what you suggested and wrote a nice email to the book seller on Amazon….sneeze!…They wrote me back and apologized and said they had sent another book out to me this past Tuesday…snort!…Still no book on my doorstep!!… grump!… It seems I am not meant to read “Last of The Dixie Heroes” anytime soon…sniffle!…Unless it comes next week maybe. I will keep you posted….burp!

I'm catching up, here. Mom was out for a couple days having some kind of a "medical procedure" — one day to prepare for it, and yesterday to actually have it — then she had to work today, so this is the first time she's had the computer on for a couple of days.

Melanie: I'm glad Dan is doing well. One time Mom interviewed Dr. Bill Frist (before he became a senator) because he had just written a book about being a heart surgeon. He talked about holding a beating heart in his hands — powerful stuff! I'm just glad they put it back in the right place — you always hear about hospitals making mistakes! Give Dan and Zoe hugs from Mom and me.

Bee: When Mom was in 4-H in Iowa she raised hogs, and she says she's seen them disport plenty of times! The one thing she's never seen them do, though, is fly!

Sorry you haven't heard from me earlier today, but I've been catching up on my reading (heh, heh). Unfortunately, I am sworn to total secrecy as to the story, by the 47 page single spaced contract that I was required to sign with respect to the ARC. And Spence has a weapon at his disposal much more potent than Rocky the Undercover Squirrel (who the last time I saw him had an ice pack on his head and was chugging Alka_Seltzer) and that is the Fury of Audrey (even more potent than the Fury of Rachel Monette). I will say, however, that I can describe the book in two simple words: Pure Joy. Toodles for now, Wookie a la disport!

Wöökie! 47 pages? Did Grandpa read and sign that too? Did the entire family? Whew, all that and then still have enough energy to read. Wonderful.

Ooooh, Rio. Looks like the Padres are trying to sneak up on the Rockies! Did I ever mention that Mom used to live on the bluff overlooking what is now the Padres' stadium? It was just tumbleweeds back then. If she had been a little older when she lived there, maybe her heart would belong to the Padres instead of the Angels!

Hmmm!… We were interrupted tonight just a bit ago…snort!… Our lovely young neighbor came over and apologized profusely for interrupting the Rockies game …grunt!…He knows us so well!… sniff!… He and his body builder girlfriend are going to Mexico for the week and want us to water his outside potted plants…sigh… So we had to take a tour of his stuff and assure him nothing will die on our guard…heh!..As if!.. heh!.. She could care less about potted plants this year – usually she is queen of potted plants and stuff, but this year, it’s a no-show…hmmphf!… I do hope she does take care of his stuff cuz he is a nice guy and she works with his mom who is Admin to the President of the Company…heh! …What a coincidence that is!! …snicker!

Think the Angels can pull off a Rockies-type miracle? It's now 12-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Whoops, make that 13-0, but at least the 5th is over. When you got it, you got it. And when you don't, it's just miserable!

Wait!…heh!.. I did NOT include the Wine story with the moderated comment!..Thank goodness!…grunt!

Oh!Oh!… Another wine story for Spence and Stover!…heh!…Tad the Wine Guy was telling us all about fine wine and stuff…snort!… My friend’s friend said none of her guests were connoisseurs and mostly enjoyed Coors Light (gag!)….grunt!… So Tad took my friend’s friend to the isle of Boxed Wines…heh!heh!heh!… I about died of shame …sniff!… But to be kind and a good friend, my friend offered to buy and taste test the Pinot Noir in a box…heh!heh!heh!… The brand name is “Pinor Evil”….heh! …It’s all about me folks! Its all about Me!….snicker!

Oh Please Kirby!…Sammie has tough skin by now!…snort!… Give thanks to me for that!…grunt!…She is one tough puppy and can handle a lot now!…heh!…Love her lots! BIG Sloppy Pug SMOOCH to her cause she had a bad day…sniff!

Sam: You probably should go to bed — gotta get your beauty sleep because that's very important for a princess! And tomorrow's another day. Maybe They will pay more attention to lil ol' you!

Rio and SiberH: Looks like your Rockies held off the Padres. And the Orioles beat the Rangers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Angels are going to take advantage of that — still 13-0 in the top of the 8th. It's not getting any worse, but it's certainly not getting any better — two down already!

Rio's advice:…Never give up on your team Kirby!..Never!

Wine!… I should say, which I did not say before, was that we were at Tad’s store getting pricing and whatnot for the big Murder Mystery Party!… snort!…He was very helpful to her friend regarding the amount of liquor needed for her big party!…heh!…..For the first time ever we got to sit in his birds-nest office high above the store…Wow!…(He likes me a lot!) Tad is so cool!… He is at all the wine tasting events and is so good-looking …sniff!… No wonder my friend likes him so much…heh!…I bet Stover would like him too!!… He talks Tannins.

Oh, and your Murder Mystery Party sounds like much fun! Mom and Dad went to a murder dinner theater once, but Mom thinks it would have been better if they had gone with someone else they knew. A whole party sounds like a lot of fun! Are you invited?

Kirby!… I am invited and I will be wearing a bowtie at the special event!…heh!…My friend is Gina the Bartender. She is one of the major characters in the story! …snort!…She thinks she may be the murder victim because of all the nasty rumors and information she has in her possession…wheeze!…But no one will really know who the killer or the victim is till the night of the party!…heh!… I will be with her serving drinks and listening in on more conversations with the patrons (suspects!)… Fun times!…heh!

My girl is working her way through college as a bartender! Let me know if "Gina" needs any tips to make her character more believable! BTW, your costume sounds positively dapper! Are you going to wear a straw boater to go with it?

  90. Alice Johnson
    7:01 pm on July 10th, 2010

Isn't a straw boater a flat straw hat? With about a 2 inch brim and it always has a ribbon around it next to the brim.

I don't think it would last long on Rio.

Kirby!… I have learned this one remark for the Patrons (suspects) at the bar…grunt!… “I think you are a regular Joe and a Six Pack Charlie!”… heh!… How does that sound?? … snort! … She will be saying this, not me!…I’m just in charge of research!…drat!…She says I will bring in Lots of Tips if I just look like a gangster type dawg!…heh!

  92. Kirby T. Penworthy
    7:03 pm on July 10th, 2010

You're right, Alice, that's a straw boater. You're not implying that Rio would eat it, are you? I think if he's busy serving — and maybe drinking a few — beers, the hat would stay right where it belongs!

We saw the end of the Rockies game here. They sure are doing well.

    Excuse….

The Twins have a lot of players with injuries right now. Mauer shouldn't be playing in the all star game cause he is having hip problems and Morneau has been pulled because of a concussion.

No wonder we are losing lately.

    (((Sigh)))

    No Kirby,

Rio won't eat it. Now if it was a BBQ boater that would be another story. I think Rio will be too busy with the beer to worry about a boater.

    Heh

Now I have to go watch the staff brush her teeth. I always get fed right after that. Night all!

Hi Alice!…hey!…Are you mad at me for my “NONE WHAT-SO-EVER-ATTENTION-SPAN-YOU-HAVE” remark!???… snort!…That straw hat would be dust in like no time at all…heh!… If indeed that’s what a Straw Boater is… grunt!

  96. Kirby T. Penworthy

I know what a regular Joe is, but I've never heard of a Six Pack Charlie. I'll have to get Mom to do some research at the library — she says they have books about the Roaring 20s there. But the straw boater is more for the "straight" guy — like a Barbershop Quartet kind of guy. If you're going for the gangster look, you probably need a fedora — worn jauntily over one eye, of course!

I know what you mean, Rio. My Mom and Dad make me wear a special collar every time the Hawkeyes play football. I'm OK with doing that. But then they found a Iowa kerchief they wanted to put around my neck, too. No way, no how! Sometimes you've just gotta put your foot down and say that's enough! Luckily, they listened to me. The collar and nothing but the collar!

Yup!…We guys have got to make them know we are the bosses…heh!…It will not work any other way!…grunt!… If we are not the boss then we become the victim and that happens way too often to our brothers and sisters in the nation within the nation…sniff!

There's no doubt I'm the boss in my house! I have my dad wrapped around my little paw. Mom isn't quite as willing to cater to me as he is, but I have my way of dealing with her. Have I mentioned The Look? Looking tough doesn't get me anywhere with her. I have to look "cute" to get my way. Or else I do my Elvis impression — that's a sure winner!
