Good morning, everyone! Oh boy a quiz…no prize! Could the answer be Bob Dylan? Too much fun had here on this blog last night 🙂
In honor of that, let’s have a funny Friday.
8:38 am on May 23rd, 2014
HOH and Everyone–Bob Dylan? OK, I’ll vote with that (I really have no clue). I’ll be thinking of y’all as I sprint for my train and subway and bus. I’ll be going for a Fabulous Friday and wish you all the same.
9:01 am on May 23rd, 2014
I know but I wasn’t going to tell. The hint, of course, gives it away.
Good morning all.
9:21 am on May 23rd, 2014
But we like to win no prizes 🙂
9:31 am on May 23rd, 2014
Greetings!
Much shenanigans going on last night!
Is Richard Moir the answer. If it is, and I don’t win a prize, I will be in a very bad mood.
Anyway, there is ONE important birthday today…..My bestest friend on the blog, TEDDY RUFF RIDER is a year old!!!!! I can say I knew him when he was just a puppy. I love you, Teddy. I hope you, and your Princess, Zeta both have lots of fun and wonderful birthdays!
9:46 am on May 23rd, 2014
Good morning, all. We will take Bee’s and Rose’s word for it and do no more guessing.
Beautiful day here, actually perfect!
Staff, the Romas are popping thur the ground today. Always fun to watch beans sprout. If you watch carefully you can see the ground erupting slowing as the sprout starts to come thur. Then it unfolds and straightens all in one day. The miracle of nature! Doesn’t take much to make Barb happy.
Diane, on your last post last night you mentioned Slurp and Burp. Barb mentioned this a long time ago, but when she lived out in the country, there was a bar/grill named the Slurp and Burp. Barb thought that was an incredibly awful name for a place to eat. People would say “Hey, let’s meet at the Slurp and Burp”. Very typical of the mentality out there- her boss, the Crazy Lady- liked to eat there.
9:57 am on May 23rd, 2014
Rose: (Whispering)–It’s Bob Dylan. The hint is one of the lines of his song Love Minus Zero. Here’s a link to the lyrics:

Happy Birthday Teddy RR!
10:01 am on May 23rd, 2014
Bee, we knew you were right, but only cuz we Googled it. BTW, is it alright to use Google as a verb?
10:04 am on May 23rd, 2014
Who’s the Birthday Boy?

Teddy Ruff Rider! One Year Old!
10:06 am on May 23rd, 2014
Teddy: la-la-la
Whoo hoo, yodel, howl. Whoo hoo, yodel, howl. whoo hoo, dear Teddy Ruff Ruff.
Whoo hoo, yodel, howl.
P.S. Love your cake bone 🙂
10:07 am on May 23rd, 2014
Barb: I’m laughing. “Google” has become a verb just as “Xerox” is a verb meaning to photocopy.
10:17 am on May 23rd, 2014
One of the comments on that link about the Dylan song mentions Henry James’ Portrait of a Lady. It reminded me of one of my favorite lines in that novel: Isabel Archer (the “lady” of the title) describes her husband Gilbert Osmond (he married her for her fortune) in this way: “He has a genius for upholstery.” (One of the most wonderful lines in literature!)
10:26 am on May 23rd, 2014
Ah, an intellectual way of saying, “Couch Potato”.
10:33 am on May 23rd, 2014
Good morning, family.
Wondering if Rio has a Hot Wing Hangover today. And we are very glad his soft bed is thousands of miles away from ours.
Happy Birthday Teddy RR! Have a ball. Or a chewie. Whatever your happy heart desires.
Macy – how is your mom doing?
10:38 am on May 23rd, 2014
Diane, We canine lawyers do not require licenses from U.S. states. We are licensed in our State of Joy.
Bee, you are way too intellectual for our kind. We just like knowing that we can say we know ya’.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to TEDDY !!!!
10:40 am on May 23rd, 2014
Wondering about Macy’s Mom and Boobear’s dad.
Happy Birthday from Maggie and Lucy. You are such a dashing young man (dashing in more ways than one)!
10:51 am on May 23rd, 2014
Teddy: Happy purrs to you on your firstest birthday.
We will be looking forward to fotos of the big celebration with your gal Zeta (and possibly another video?)
11:05 am on May 23rd, 2014
Actually I think that the “genius for upholstery” line means that he is a fake who puts on a good front.
11:12 am on May 23rd, 2014
Stover!…Thank you for answering my unasked question…snorkel!
11:21 am on May 23rd, 2014
Birthday pictures of Teddy would be appreciated.
Birthday pictures of Dylan, not so much
Happy Birthday Teddy!!
11:22 am on May 23rd, 2014
Oh, that too.
11:22 am on May 23rd, 2014
Bee – why would “upholstery” correlate to “fake”?
11:23 am on May 23rd, 2014
Rio: You’re welcome.
Don’t you guys love that line? Henry James is wonderful. The novel is really about innocence becoming disillusioned. However, Isabel is a survivor…what I would consider a true heroine.
11:34 am on May 23rd, 2014
T&G: “Upholster” is derived from two Middle English words meaning to hold up. In other words, upholstery could be considered a cover in the negative sense: something not real. In the context of the line from the novel, it means that Gilbert puts on a manner for the public but he is really egocentric. In the novel his mistress, Madame Merle (Latin for Blackbird), sets up the marriage between Isabel and Gilbert so that she can benefit from Isabel’s fortune also. (Merle and Gilbert have a daughter whose name I’ve forgotten.)
What fun!
11:51 am on May 23rd, 2014
Happy B-Day, Teddy RR!! May your day be filled with joy!
Maggie, loved the picture yesterday. Mom really thought that the seed box was a cool auction item.
11:56 am on May 23rd, 2014
Bee – the name Gilbert origin is “bright promise”. Hmmm wonder if that was a deliberate name choice for the character, as in a bright promise often sounds good, but comes to naught.
12:03 pm on May 23rd, 2014
T&G: I didn’t know that. Yes, I’m sure James did it deliberately.
12:12 pm on May 23rd, 2014
And Isabel originally meant “God is bountiful”. More meaning?
12:15 pm on May 23rd, 2014
BWAK! Isabel is our flock’s main gal!
12:16 pm on May 23rd, 2014
HOH: I didn’t know that either. I love it!
12:17 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Bee -in a class on English literature, the professor deconstructed “Wuthering Heights” to such an extent that it ruined the book for us. According to that prof, every single word was planned for symbolism. While we are sure that the names were carefully thought out and chosen, we think she went way overboard on some of her theories. And we just don’t think Bronte would have been sitting, pen between her teeth, thinking about the exact word to describe Catherine’s curls to symbolize her sincerity. (Yup, that was an actual idea put forth by the prof)
12:34 pm on May 23rd, 2014
HRH, B. I love when you leave interesting info on the blog! Thank you for the info. Not a fan.
12:35 pm on May 23rd, 2014
T&G: Analysis is useful up to a point but, yes, it can be overdone. Wuthering Heights is a wonderful novel. I’d go back and read it just for the story.
12:39 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Queen Victoria and Bob Dylan share the same birthdate. May 24th is the day when it is safe (from frost) to plant the garden.
Happy Birthday Teddy!
12:51 pm on May 23rd, 2014
We actually still do love the book “Wuthering Heights”. Just the name of that house was enough to hook us – first read the book at about age 10. Most of the symbolism was way over our head at that time, but we have reread it many times since.
The term paper written that year was “Updating the Tragic Love Triangle in Literature – a Comparison of ‘Wuthering Heights’ and ‘Gone with the Wind'”.
I got a “D” because the professor said there was no way to compare a classic English novel to a trite penny dreadful of a low class American writer, and that “Gone with the Wind” could not be considered “literature”. I would say the prof had some deep seated prejudices of her own, hmm?
1:10 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Tupper’s Mama: Good grief! I think that sounds like a fascinating comparison. Pondering….
1:11 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Birthday!…Yippeee!….Teddy shares a birthday with my friends Mother…heh!heh!
1:29 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Happy Birthday, Rio’s Friend’s Mother!
(whew – not going to try saying that one three times fast)
1:47 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Happy Birthday to the Mother of Rio’s Friend! Will there be Cake?
1:52 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Mother!…My friend is going to put her on a big ole bus this afternoon…snort!…She is leaving on her annual Iowa trip. Beau and I will be left to fend for ourselves….yeeeeep!….What if she never comes home?…gah!
1:56 pm on May 23rd, 2014
We can only hope there is a Hidden Stash of Zingers.
2:04 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Happy Birthday and Bon Voyage to our friend’s friend’s mom.
2:10 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Boobear, Lily used the seed box for two years I think and she loved it. This year her gardening interest has taken a back seat to her horse. Kelly decided to “borrow” the seed box and we think it looks great in her display. That is a picture of the three kids on the bottom shelf.
2:24 pm on May 23rd, 2014
I remember that when I was in college, the trend seemed to be analyze works of literature using references to God or Christ.
2:31 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Hobbit – thank dog THAT trend is over.
2:42 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Amalia, You must have a way better memory than Barb. She cannot remember what any of her college English papers were about. She does remember that she got 108% on her high school Eng. Lit. final exam. She was in a class with all the brainyack kids and she got the highest grade. The scores were posted on the door, but school was out and almost nobody saw it. That was one of her best memories of academic achievements.
2:45 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Maggie, I can understand that a seed box would take backseat to a horse!!
2:54 pm on May 23rd, 2014
And an unknown 108% would be a memory/milestone 🙂
2:56 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Bon Voyage!…heh!snort!
3:14 pm on May 23rd, 2014
#101? Barb, Maggie and Lucy, doing chicken and sausage gumbo here tonight. We know y’all will top that as you’re great cooks. Mom’s favorite dinner is reservations !
3:15 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Oops, we meant 51
3:22 pm on May 23rd, 2014
T&G @ 2:31: Amen!
Rio: You’ll be losing weight now! Brutal walks, no zingers!
3:25 pm on May 23rd, 2014
HOH: I love Gumbo! The word and the food.
3:43 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Dawson, when mom cooks large pot thing, the amount grows. There will be enough for a HERD. Ya are welcome 🙂
3:52 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Dawson!…What!?…sob!sob!sob!…Mother don’t goooooooo!…AAAEEEERRRGH!
4:14 pm on May 23rd, 2014
RIO! Losing weight is a good thing. Next time there are thunderstorms, you might be able to find what you are looking for way under the bed!!!
BooBear and RIo side-by-side up top!
Happy Birthday to Rio’s friend’s mom!
4:18 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Have you all seen this???? (sorry for the long ad at first – that’s not the story we are talking about)

4:28 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Barb – Mama only remembers that term paper because she thought it was such a cool subject, she worked really hard on it, and she had never before been given a D on any paper in her life.
(she did have to wrack her brain just a bit to remember the actual title)
4:45 pm on May 23rd, 2014
T & G, We thought it sounded very cool too. And the teacher -what a doofus. Giving you a poor grade because she didn’t like the author of the book! Margaret Mitchell wasn’t it?
HOH, Barb has never made a gumbo. Paella and creole, but never gumbo. It’s like a stew isn’t it?
Tonight we are having grilled chicken thighs marinated in olive oil and Herbs de Provence, our new obsession.
4:55 pm on May 23rd, 2014
I am so happy today. I found eggs from real walking-around chickens at a local artisan’s market. I brought home a dozen and made scrambled eggs with one of the really good eggs and another from my previously best eggs and what a difference! The yolk was so beautifully golden. This is like Fern and Peaches and the flock. This place has an egg plan so you can pay ahead for 13 weeks of eggs. That way they can guarantee that you will get what you want. And I want!
5:02 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Chickens!…My friend found out that my yard is zoned for chickens…snort!…This got my friend thinking how nice it would be to have fresh eggs. I think her mother would flip if she came home to find a hen house in the backyard…heh!heh!
5:24 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Rio: Did we scare away mother last night when she found us finding your decoy balloon? We could tell she didn’t except to find us, but we didn’t mean to scare her to the point of catching the next bus out of town.
5:25 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Did I tell youse guys that I started laying again? It took me a while to adjust to my rehab coop, but you know me: The Egganator!
5:33 pm on May 23rd, 2014
B&M; stew like and served over rice…nice.
Rio, would you and Beau leave the chickies alone?
Go Fern..the Egganator 🙂
6:00 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Guess what, guess what, guess what? It’s COOKIE Maling Night! Wahooooo! Mama says tonight’s batch will have peanut butter, bananas and pomegranate yogurt.
Oh my!
6:01 pm on May 23rd, 2014
“Cookie MAKING Night”
sigh
6:11 pm on May 23rd, 2014
T&G, you are lucky gals to get special cookies made for you, you, you.
And speaking of baking, a friend just got a job at a bakery because she kneaded the dough.
6:41 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Royals: Cookies! I really had High Hopes there for a minute and hoping to be on the Mailing List.
6:41 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Crap! I liked the idea of cookie mailing night. I was halfway to our mailbox.
6:44 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Hounds: Wow! You have one for every occasion!
How do you Remember them all?
6:48 pm on May 23rd, 2014
The Royal Mum’s cookies sound so good…I’ll bet they don’t even make it through the night…let alone to the mailbox.
7:16 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Everytime Mama makes cookies for us, Gramp wanders into the kitchen to ask what smells so good. He always has to try one, even though we tell him he won’t like them. They are just full of really good stuff, but without salt or backing powder, humans just don’t like them.
Go figure.
7:16 pm on May 23rd, 2014
HOH, Barb was just sitting at the computer, shaking her head, for some reason. You are like one of those old time vaudeville guys.
MPM, What did you have to pay for a dozen eggs?
We are hoping we might get zoned for chickens at some point, because the IL governor now has them at the gov. mansion. The reason is that they are encouraging sustainable ag. So why can’t we have them? All the little local gov. have vetoed them so far.
7:19 pm on May 23rd, 2014
We were waiting at the post office until Luna came to tell us it was a false alarm.
7:42 pm on May 23rd, 2014
MagPie, the eggs were $4.60 a dozen. I will sign up for the 13 week plan and I’ll see what that comes to and let you know after. I can’t sign up right away because I have a couple dozen of my previously best eggs to use up.
7:47 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Our mouths were watering over the cookies. Bet mom won’t bake any till Monday.
The little town of Ringgold, GA has an 1890’s festival every Mem, Day weekend on Fri. and Sat. They are family and pet friendly so I think we are going down tomorrow for a bit. This is the town that had a tornado hit 3 or 4 years ago in the residential area. Sunday the DDD is going to inaugurate his new grill and has invited a lot of folks over 🙂 We are supposed to be good and not beg…heh, heh, heh.
7:56 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Wow! We just had HUGE thunderboomers and rain coming down so hard, we couldn’t see across the street.
Mama was busy hiding under the bed, so we crawled under there too, just so she wouldn’t feel like a wuss.
Thank goodness the storm stopped before the timer went off on our cookies! What if they had been burned?
7:59 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Grill!….My friend came home to find a brand new BBQ grill on my patio!….WOOOOO!….Last summer her mothers grill caught on fire and we have been grill-less ever since! This is perfect timing for the long holiday grilling weekend….wheeze!slurp!
Bus!…My friend acquired a Grill and lost her Mother…sniff!….She is on a bus to Iowa right now…gasp!
8:25 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Thieves!…Nothing scares that women except being late for an appointment….OMYDAWG!…She is 1/2 hour early to everything…grunt!
8:38 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. To celebrate, me and my gal Zeta have a special play date scheduled for tomorrow and some really yummy bones may be involved.
8:43 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Happy birthday to Teddy and your inner devil dog!
8:49 pm on May 23rd, 2014
And this is the birthday card my best gal PrincessZeta sent me.

8:56 pm on May 23rd, 2014

9:43 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Awww Teddy. You sure know how to pick ’em.
9:50 pm on May 23rd, 2014
What a great card, Teddy.
Speaking of Golden Retrievers, Barb picked up another Raine Stockton book at the library, High in Trial. This is #7 in the series. They may not be great literature, but we really enjoy them.
9:55 pm on May 23rd, 2014
SiberH!….Are youse guys watching the game right now?…sniff!sniff!
10:15 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Emergency!…Alert!…grunt!….Now we here are under a flash flood warning till 11:00pm…sniff!…But it is not even raining here yet. Maybe we will be lucky and miss out on all these weather shenanigans…wheeze!
10:21 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Rio, Not watching the game because we are having downpours of rain. The rain has caused the Dish to go out.
We never have this kind of weather this time of year.
Teddy RR, Very nice card your cutie sent you.
10:24 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Rio, I hope you are on high ground. I am on high ground.
10:28 pm on May 23rd, 2014
SiberH!….I am in the living room….sniff!…It is dry, but not real high…gah!…Not raining here yet. We are waiting for it to hit..sniff!
10:29 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Monsoon!…Season!…wheeze!
10:30 pm on May 23rd, 2014
We have a source for great eggs also. I was bummed to leave the co-op and its wonderful eggs when I returned. Then I discovered my quilting friend DeAnn has a grandson, Sam, who raises chickens for 4H. He sells the eggs for 2$ a dozen. I am on my 4th dozen right now. They are lovely and brown just like the co-op eggs but some are really small and some are extra large. And yes, MPM, the yokes are golden!
I put in carrots, rainbow colored, and spinach today. I expected it to rain so I hurried up and put them in. Mr.Staff said it poured up in Mayville which is 18 miles away. Here – nothing.
Some more firsts today. My first tick. Also I found the nest the catbirds are working on in the hedge. We will be banned from using the front gate for a while.
10:33 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Wait!….I thought i heard Thunder-boomers in the distance….yeeeep!….The game is tied at 2 ta 2, I can’t hit the deck yet…gah!
10:36 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Shenanagins! Did someone mentione shenanigans! Shenanigans are right up there with cahoots, not gettin caught, and getting caught red pawed.
10:39 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Staff, Barb was picking spinach from the garden today and now a couple of the plants are starting to bolt already. The beans we got from you are almost all up. Can’t wait to try then.
Saying good night all.
10:46 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Candle!…She just lit the big candle pre-active upon the power going out…sniff!…I hate that smell…grunt!…The game is a cushion chewer! too bad SiberH is not enjoying this stress…wheeze!
10:53 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Rio, I am following the game on the internet, but that is not the same as watching it.
It isn’t monsoon season yet. That is what is so weird about this weather. It is a storm system that will be moving east toward some of you guys.
10:58 pm on May 23rd, 2014
If it weren’t Ruff Rider’s birthday, we’d be gunning to be poster 101, but we think the birthday boy should get the slurpy pug kisses.
11:08 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Raining!…Now it is coming down, but not in buckets. Just a nice rain so far…wheeze!…All that blustery build-up was just to scare us…sniff!
11:10 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Heh!….I am 101 so I do not have to slurpy anyone tonight…heh!heh!
11:14 pm on May 23rd, 2014
We are turning in. Stay dry tonight, Rio.
I’ll give Zeta a kiss on her birthday. Mom says she sends a kiss to Teddy on his birthday.
Night All
11:18 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Gah!…SiberH!…Nolan is out with a broken middle finger…sniff!…That guy has not missed one game so far…snuffle!…This is going to be hard for him. And hard for our team to fill in for the amazing Arenado!…gasp!
11:23 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Well played, Rio. Well played.
11:25 pm on May 23rd, 2014
Mr. Husky, that storm system is supposed to be here by Monday. Please don’t squeeze all the rain out of it.
Happy Birthday Teddy! Who’s a big boy?
Mom went off this afternoon without leaving a light on for us, and the water bowl was empty. We would have called the ASPCA, but she took the phone too. She went off to play Skipbo with her mom’s church cronies.
Big news here, mom cooked actual food two days in a row. We think we heard Dad faint in heaven. First day was pork chops, baked potato and green beans. Second day was just Manwich, but it still involved the stove…
11:36 pm on May 23rd, 2014
I am not allowed to use the stove. I am also not allowed to have my own go-phone that I can use for texting. The latter makes me be in a very bad mood.
4:16 am on June 9th, 2014
Spot on with this write-up, I honestly believe this website needs much more attention. I’ll probably
be back again to see more, thanks for the info!
