Pop Pop Pop (Revised)

“I don’t like this,” Bernie said. “Not one bit.” He opened the closet door.

It was a deep closet, with space for this long bubble-wrapped package lying on the floor. Once I walked across some bubble wrap and pop-pop-popping sounds happened. I don’t like bubble wrap. Inside this particular bubble wrap there was a human body, not alive – the smell proved that. The face was all pressed out of shape by the bubble wrap.

“Damn it,” Bernie said. “It’s Astrid for sure.”

He bent down, started unwrapping around the face part. I’d never seen Astrid, but this wasn’t her, because it wasn’t even a woman. It was a pointy-nosed man I’d seen before. My memory of perps’ faces, especially the faces of perps who’d tried a little knife play on us, was pretty good.

“Ratko,” Bernie said.

Decatur Book Festival this weekend. PA at the Old Courthouse, Saturday 12-12:45; Spence at Ballroom B in the Conference Center, Saturday 5:30-6:15.

    RATKO!!!

    Who thought that?

Bubble wrap makes sense though. We have a greenhouse window that wasn't put in very well and so in our winters was REALLY cold. (This is in the puppy room) So last fall I wet the back smooth side of the bubble wrap and stuck it to the window. It worked so well knocking out the cold that Zoë used it under some cabinets where wind would blow through. Worked great!

This last group of pups (unlike Chet) loved the bubble wrap, pulled it out from the cabinets and popped it. Of course, they don't work around guns like Chet.

So in a few weeks, it will be time to put up more bubble wrap.

Someone asked about who else has pups here at the house. All the ladies (except Rose) have been mothers. Right now, it's Grace and Katie who are "intact." Bess has retired.

Bess is walking better. The insulin is helping.

We will know more about Dan later.

So did FOSTER wait for Bernie to leave (which didn't work) because he had killed Ratko? Or is he covering up for Astrid? (covering up, snicker) Or is Tulip, though a great petter, the perp?

Wha!?…. The bigger question is why will the Charming Mr. Abrahams only be at the Old Courthouse for 15 minutes??… snort!… And why is Spencer’s appearance only 45 minutes long…. Grunt!… I hope Kirby gets there early or he will miss both of them!!!

Wolfie: Why do you think Foster will get Albie's money?

Dan is off the ventilator and breathing on his own.

    Also making bad jokes.

I petted it gently, that seemed to help. I think it is quite common for kidneys to be a little slow after surgery. I will send all my kidney prayers to Dan.

I know the kidney doctors said it would take my new one time to "wake up", and it did! I hope Dan's will too.

Melanie, How long do they think Dan will be in the hospital? Is he trying to get early release again?

Dawson, Do you work in a nursing home? Do you still smell like garlic? One time Barb ate a whole bulb of roasted garlic and the next day it wasn't just her breath – her whole body reeked!

To make it, you cut off the very top of the garlic bulb and drizzle a little olive oil and butter on it, wrapp in foil and bake on the grill till soft (probably 30 minutes). Then you pop. pop, pop the cloves out and smear on buttered french bread. The taste is intense, but more mellow than raw garlic.

Huh, I didn't think it would be another dead body.

Geez, someone is really knocking people off here. Now this is interesting. Why Ratko, and why Albie. What is the motive?

We have to learn the motive!

Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog, 2009 by Steven Winn.

Steven Winn and his wife, Sally, held out for as long as they could. When the San Francisco couple finally gave in to their only child Phoebe's pleas for a dog, they adopted a scraggly terrier mutt from a local animal shelter. The new family pet, Como, turned out to hate men—especially the author—and proved to be a cunning escape artist.

Here is another one. Dog books must be really popular right now. Where are the cat books???

Last Dog On the Hill: The Extraordinary Life of Lou, 2010 by Steve Duno

Born of guard dogs on a secret marijuana farm in Mendicino County, Lou truly was one dog in a million.

On the winter day that the ailing, tick-infested feral pup was rescued by Steve Duno, neither dog nor man had a clue as to what they were getting into, or where the relationship would lead.

Last Dog on the Hill tells the story of an indigent young Rottweiler mix who, after abandoning his pack and the hills of his birth, went on to change the lives of hundreds of people and dogs, including the author’s, whose career as a behaviorist and writer was made possible through Lou’s extraordinary intelligence and heart.

Lou won the respect of gang members, foiled an armed robbery, caught a rapist, fought coyotes and kidnappers, comforted elderly war veterans and Alzheimer patients in their final days, taught ASL to kids, learned scores of unique behaviors and tricks, amassed a vocabulary of nearly 200 words, helped rehabilitate hundreds of aggressive dogs and saved them from euthanasia.

He was also a clown, consummate performer and Steve’s best friend for sixteen years. His story will make readers laugh and cry in equal measures.

Stover? I have the same question as Rio. Chet's first two books had covers on them.

  27. B. Stover
    6:51 am on August 31st, 2010

Rio: A dust jacket is the paper cover (that can be taken off) on hardcover books.

  28. B. Stover
    6:55 am on August 31st, 2010

SH: The covers on the first two C&B novels are dust jackets. They have the picture on them. If you remove them…the one on DOI for example…you have a plain black cover with a blue spine. The dust jackets give info on the inside flaps–front and back–usually with a story summary and brief bio of the author. The back of the dust jacket is often used to give quotations from other authors about the book. On DOI there are quotations from Stephen King and Robert B. Parker. Library editions usually do not have dust jackets.

    C. Bob? He started this whole thing; is he setting up Bernie?

I can't imagine from Ratko's description he would be the "other."

Was he blackmailing Astrid? or Albie? or Foster?

Tulip? Is she in with Foster? It seems fortuitous that she is somewhere that Foster said Astrid was. She's the one that mentioned the "suitcases" that no one else has. .

How about Husky smooches to Rio!

SH: I'm laughing. What did your mom think of those posts?

Rio: The clue left by David was "They hide in plain sight." I like the way Kathrine and Will finally meet at the party. Somehow the two plot lines are connected. What is the four leaf clover all about? It's connected to the clue in the crossword puzzle in episode 1. I think Kale is a good guy.

I think in the first episode the three branches of government were in the crosswords and Will didn't know what the fourth clue represented. That clue was the one in Latin for four leaf clover. Remember that the professor's wife (the one who committed suicide and Katherine finds the clipping in her husband's file cabinet) also had a four leaf clover that he had received. She also had the same picture of seven young boys on the beach–the one James Wheeler took from Tom's townhouse.

I'm here! And Rio, the time for PA was always 12-12:45 — I think the original post was just a typo. Don't worry — Mom has our schedule all written out! Besides PA and SQ she wants to see some other authors (I don't know why!), and there are stages and panels all over town — it's like an intricate ballet to be in the right place at the right time! She's got experience — there's a book festival in Columbia and she works at the library booth there, so whether she's at the booth or at a presentation, she's always where she needs to be when she needs to be there. Of course, that's just different rooms at the convention center. It'll be more of a challenge for her to be running down the block instead of the hallway!!!

My game's still scoreless, so while all the rest of you are getting excited about your games, I'd like to go on record as someone who predicted that Ratko was dead in the housing development. From the post of Aug. 21 @ 8:24 p.m., listing the possibilities for why the same scent was identified as Foster's by Chet, and as Ratko's by Tulip:

    3) Foster strangled Ratko in the abandoned housing development, getting the caretaker’s cologne on himself. If Ratko is dead in the housing development, that would explain the “scent that’s important in our work” that Chet smelled.
