Politics: From To Fetch A Thief

“No avoiding politics these days,” Admin says, “so I ran a search for the word politics or politician in all the books of the Chet and Bernie series so far. I got one hit, from To Fetch A Thief, and here’s the passage:”

“What’s a border, Chet?” Bernie said. I waited to hear. “Just a line on a map, drawn by politicians. Is that supposed to impress us?” I didn’t know. We came to a crossroads, the pavement continuing straight ahead, a dirt track leading off to the side. Bernie pulled over, shut off the engine.

It was real quiet. Bernie twisted around in his seat, gazed at Dos Jorobas. In between the humps lay a little clump of white. “San Anselmo,” Bernie said. “That was our plan. Do we cut and run, let ourselves get pushed around?” Were we getting pushed around? By who? I didn’t know, but getting pushed around was out of the question. I barked. Bernie laughed and gave me a pat. Then he opened the glove box and took out the .38 Special and a box of ammo. “Don’t know about you,” Bernie said, loading the rounds – those rounds, glittering in the sun, a sight I always liked seeing! – into the cylinder. “But I’m in the mood for pushing back.”

Me, too. That was exactly my mood, to a T, whatever that means. There were golf tees, of course, and once in a pro shop I’d gotten into a bit of a – but forget all that. How could this be about golf? Had golf come up in this case, even once? Hey! In fact, it had. I remembered Colonel Drummond on the practice tee – whoa, another T – and those yellow pants. So maybe this was about golf, after all. Fine with me. I was ready for anything, including golfers in yellow pants trying to push us around.

Good morning everyone. We got a nice long post this morning to make up for the short ones the last couple of days.

Hope everyone is out from under the quilt today.

Sunny but cold this morning in Illinois. Got down below 30 last night, hope the salad greens in the magic garden made it thru. Maybe we should take a picture for Rio, assuming they are still alive!

Greetings plunderers from the middle of the mitten. Cool but sunny day here. I’ve been basking in the sun while mom has been a busy, busy lady. She’s baked a blackberry coffee cake, made a pot of coffee, and has been working on her new quilting project. She’s been sewing, ironing and then cutting more material so she can sew and iron some more.

Barb and MagPie, Yes! The Sherlock Homes book has arrived! Thank you. Now I need time to read it. Going to finally rain today. Thank dog.

Dan is tired and trying to do too much. Franklin is now sitting on him.

About the book series from the 1940’s – 50’s, I once read the first two (original) Elsie Dinsmore books by Martha Finley. They do give a picture of the times. 1867 – 1905
I would not have done well in that when.

An adapted version of the books have been printed but leave out a lot of the harshness of the originals.

Today is a trip to the store. (whoopee) I will take Patsy because she makes everything better.

Here’s another part of Paradise Lost that I like. It’s the first time Satan sees Eve and is awed by her:

“That space the evil one abstracted stood
From his own evil, and for the time remained
    Stupidly good, of enmity disarmed,
Of guile, of hate, of envy, or revenge.” (Book IX, line 462)

Bear – The problem is that many computers have already been taken over. The infected computers have their Internet ‘go-to’ site addresses hijacked. When the Feds put these guys out of business, on July 9 the Feds pass-thru fix will go away.

The FBI web site is for real and it will check if your computer has been infected:

We checked out the Elsie Dinsmore link. In the notes a comment was made concerning something life altering (tongue-in-cheek) that occurred in the second book and that earlier story being different from those that followed. It sounds like there were 2 different versions of the second book?
Also, saw O.Henry wrote a parody called Elsie in New York, which has her dealing with such things as a fictional activist group called The Association for the Prevention of Jobs Being Put Up on Working Girls Looking for Jobs.

My computer is not infected. I went to the site and clicked on the link and poof in about 5 seconds I was told I was not going to shut down in July.

I too was wondering if I wanted to trust that it really was the gov’t. I guess I am just a suspicious person. To my mind it seemed like the perfect way to get a whole bunch of people to click on a bad link. My computer is still running though.

Oh boy – Sam is right – there’s a big storm coming. They said the higher elevations, like ski country, might get over a foot of snow. Well, I refuse to accept it, so there. In October 2006 I lived in Buffalo and we had 2 feet of snow. It was 50 degrees and the trees had leaves. The heavy snow brought all the trees down and I was without electricity for 8 days. Our trees are now getting leaves and I’m not, simply not, doing this again.

We got a small, but early start on next seasons’s firewood. When AJ came back from town a tree had fallen across the driveway. He walked to the house and grabbed his chainsaw.

He had to get a new drill at the hardware store and picked up a new and improved hammer for the building projects we have for this summer. I gave him his last hammer- a small tool—which I put sparkly stickers and ribbons on it. My theory was along the same lines of buying cheap sunglasses. It’s the expensive sunglasses always seemed to get scratched or last, but the cheap glasses are like roaches. He wouldn’t lose the bedazzled and ribboned hammer—this was my theory. And it worked. He used that hammer despite comments from friends and our closest neighbors. I can’t decide between a red or green ribbon for the new hammer.

Mom bought a set of flowered tools for herself, figuring that dad wouldn’t use them. It didn’t work. He used them and stored them away in the big bins in the garage, along with all the other tools that mom can never find.

Once I bought myself a small spade for gardening. The man at the garden center recommended painting the handle pink to keep my husband from ‘borrowing’ it. However it has such a tiny head that he doesn’t care for it at all. It is perfect for me though.

Rio, You need to bring the red blob out of storage. I know it means loss, but it also cheers me up.

I bet we could order Prime Rib if we get to that hotel in Denver. (If I win)

We should do a write-in effort for SiberH to win the contest.

I do trust all of the ideas you’ve presented in your post. They’re really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are very brief for newbies. May you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
