Pawscars
“Do we know about the Pawscars?” Admin says. “Sponsored by the American Humane Association, which among other things is concerned with the welfare of showbiz animals?”
“Now we do,” says Spence. “And the big winner? Yes – Uggie, from the The Artist. Did you like that dance at the end? And the way they depicted L.A. in the twenties? And the crazy anything-is-possible zeitgeist of the times?”
“Some of it.”

Good morning all.

Good morning, Bee and all. Craziness on the blog last night with our Avatars!
Admin. seems underwhelmed with excitement this morning.
Supper cold here today, wind child will be under 0. Brrr!

Hi there Wookie my man!
Did you see that Dawson has picked up some Lisa Scottoline to read? We are on our 3rd Andy Carpenter, Bury the Lead. Going to order Sudden Death this morning at the library.
9:52 am on February 11th, 2012
Hi Wookie, Barb and Maggie.
SH: To let you know–We have three inches of snow and the sun is shining brightly on it.
10:07 am on February 11th, 2012
Staff says to tell you all the snow is gone except in the shaded North Side of houses. Looks like late March here in Minnesota.
She and Mr. Staff are off to breakfast with a friend from the busy place.
(Good morning to B, B&M and the Wookster.)
10:10 am on February 11th, 2012
Hi Alice and Staff.
It’s 13 degrees here and -6 with the wind chill.
10:13 am on February 11th, 2012
Good morning, everyone.
Welcome back, TYB. We missed you and we’re glad that you are feeling better. Your dad is an amazing man.
10:54 am on February 11th, 2012
Off to do Saturday morning errands. Grocery, feed store, post office, library, and then home again.
Dolphin Tail came from Netflix, so will be watching that later. Looks like a fun movie, and true story, plus we always like Morgan Freeman.
11:10 am on February 11th, 2012
Good Morning Everyone!
I guess Spence liked The Artist and Admin. was not overly impressed. Congratulatitons Uggie!
Watched your video last night, Staff. Following the Yukon Quest is driving me nuts because of the GPS trackers not working, and they are slow to update their standings page. Lance has dropped a total of 5 dogs so far. He is running a very young team.
11:12 am on February 11th, 2012
Stover has SNOW!! We have nothing.
11:19 am on February 11th, 2012
Congratulations to Uggie for his Pawscar winning performance in The Artist and fine acting in Water for Elephants.
Clear skies here. Off to the library this morning to return a book that is (gasp) overdue. Nana is mortified…this is not something she is in the habit of doing…plus she thought she had returned it earlier in the week.
Siber-H: Sorry about the lack of snow. Life can be so unfair.
Have a Good Day Everyone.
11:36 am on February 11th, 2012
Good Morning Youse Guys!
Well, we were promised some snow here in Westchester, but all I’ve seen so far is one solitary flake fall from the sky. To steal a phrase from SiberH—GAH! We have not had a real winter! sob sob sob…
Tyb: I am so glad to see you back on the blog!! I was so worried about you and your pop. I hope you both are having a restful weekend.
Belle Starr: Do you think you could blur me to your place? Maybe SiberH would like to come too! I could help your two-legged mama with some packing and freezing, (whispering now…but mostly I could run and play in the snow with you, the team and SiberH! Maybe we could compare our sparkly things that we love so much!).
Then I would help your two-legged mama some more.
Admin: “The Artist” is a work of cinema art. Spence: I’m glad you understand. The dance at the end is just fab!
B: I know you will understand when you see it!
11:42 am on February 11th, 2012
Masquers: I think you asked about Zelda the other day. Yes, she is a friend of mine and the Prof. When the Prof and I do our little weekend get-aways at the Wildflower Cottage, we get to see her. She is such a sweet dog, and her humans are really nice folks.
11:44 am on February 11th, 2012
Two more cents…Chet’s friend, Bart from down-under is just too cute!
11:46 am on February 11th, 2012
Good Morning! We are between errands. It’s a busy Saturday as usual. We were so glad to hear from Tyb, and we sympathise with him and Jay on thei wfh.
We had a beautiful coating of snow here this morning, but it is melting fast. Supposedly a little more to come tonight. It is a vey gray day.
11:49 am on February 11th, 2012
Good Morning, Everyone,
As you know, it’s been a hectic week. We didn’t let anyone know that we’d be home and “idle” today, so we’re here getting some much neglected housework done. To put the cap on the week, I’m happy to report that I’m feeling great. Still taking it easy and on the pain pills, but I’m confident that in a couple of days I’ll be 100%. As for the MIL,
we had a nice surprise when we got to Buffalo yesterday. The doctors said she was ready to come home, so she did. She’s 90 years old and couldn’t wait to get home to snuggle with her Shih Tzo, Precious. She never had a dog until she was widowed a couple of years ago, and now her puppy is her life. Dog bless them both. Again thank you all for your care and concern. You are good friends.
12:02 pm on February 11th, 2012
Hi Rose: Will that gentle giant, Zelda, be joining us in Alaska?
Tyb: Excellent news to start the weekend! We think the MIL’s relatively quick recovery was due to Precious. She just couldn’t wait to get home to her friend.
Tell your dad to take these couple of days to relax and regroup.
12:07 pm on February 11th, 2012
Tyb: I love the description of MIL and Precious.

Rose: Yes! You must come play with us. You will also be able to see how tough life can be for me. My two-legged kept us up late last night packing food and making funny noises with a machine. She called is sealing. Did she share with us? No. I tried asking nicely and not nicely. The answer was still the same. Then, she got out of bed early this morning and started working again with all these bags scattered—they call it organized—throughout the house. I couldn’t sleep through that—what if it involved food?
12:24 pm on February 11th, 2012
Everyone is a helper when it involves food. Last night as I packed the naked burritos for AJ, five pairs of eyes followed my every move.
Now, let the peeling of 70 oranges begin!

Mom is making cream of broccoli soup and peanut butter brownies for her inlaws. Her FIL is in hospice care at home and this has been a long, slow goodbye.

Good Afternoon! Today, the weather is yucky. Cloudy, wet but dry, not chilly though. The Pack enjoyed the Walk/Run this morning.
Snowhook Bella, Slowly getting caught up. Whew. Expect an envelope with THREE photos in it AND a small something from Patsy. The thing from Patsy doesn’t go on the trip.
1:55 pm on February 11th, 2012
Snow!…Again!…Grump!
Busy!….sniff!…She is busy finishing the Flower Cart project and making More Hamburger Than Cabbage Rolls…sniff!…It smells Delish!…snort!
2:39 pm on February 11th, 2012
Hey Riö, do you think Franklin could come over and pick some of those rolls for us? I made the mistake of lifting Ellie up some stairs. Am now going to sit with a heating pad!
2:46 pm on February 11th, 2012
Molly’s Mom is here and we have already been resting. I will be such a help to her. Right now I want her to fill my kong – she uses dog biscuits and tops it off with peanut butter. I think she’s getting the hint.
2:51 pm on February 11th, 2012
Sam: What is your “kong”?
3:12 pm on February 11th, 2012
B., you can google kong and you’ll see all the sizes and shapes. Basically, it’s a hard rubber dog toy that’s hollow inside and can be filled with goodies.
3:24 pm on February 11th, 2012
B.

I was waiting for Sam to answer your question so that I could send you this picture. I just happened to have it on my desktop because somebody heard us talking about a kong at the store and asked me in an email what it is. They are very popular dog toys, but neither Blou nor Tyb shows any interest in them no matter what they are stuffed with.

Hey, y’all! Mom is feeling much better today — she went to work yesterday, but it really tired her out! And Dad is trying to recover from a baaad week of his Season from H-E-double-toothpicks! On Thursday night — when Mom was here still recovering from being sick — Dad had a game about two hours from here. One of his players fell and hit his head on the floor. Because he was knocked out, they had to call an ambulance for him and take him to the hospital. Mom asked what they did while they were waiting for the ambulance to come: delay the game or resume play? Dad says they called the game at that point because his team was already down by 50 points. 🙁 (Dad’s players were missing lay-ups, while the other team was sinking three-point shots from everywhere on the court!)
Dad went to the hospital with his player, and the team bus went back to school. Then they had to send a van to pick up Dad and the player, who had a concussion but was able to be released from the hospital. By the time the van got there and got them back to school, Dad didn’t get home until nearly 2 a.m. This is the second time they’ve had to call an ambulance for one of Dad’s injured players this year. Combine that with his only-one-win record — definitely the Season from Hell! Luckily, there’s only one more week, then Dad can try to expunge it from his memory!
3:33 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rebecca: I’m glad you got my package! Oh, and Mom would like you to check your SDD when you get a chance — no hurry! She says it definitely takes second-place to sealing all those bags! In the meantime, you want me to try blurring up there to help? I can suck everything out of those bags for you! Er, I mean just the air, not the food. At least I’d try to leave the food!
3:40 pm on February 11th, 2012
Thank you Sam and Tyb. An interesting toy. I assume it’s easy to clean….especially with peanut butter in it…..
3:56 pm on February 11th, 2012
Wolfie… so sorry about your mom’s FIL; long goodbyes are tough.
My dogs do not like Kongs either. However over the years I have found dogs to be great diet assistants as I’d have to debate whether I wanted something bad enough between meals to put up with the big eyes watching me and the pleading expressions not to mention the whimpers.
Still warm here, around +20 and it is supposed to be above zero all next week. We always have a false spring before winter gets its second wind. I will not be fooled again this year and will snort at people putting away their winter gear and washing their cars.
4:02 pm on February 11th, 2012
Mom just read about the death of Jeffrey Zaslow yesterday. He was leaving an event publicizing his latest book, The Magic Room. He also wrote The Girls from Ames, which Mom read because she grew up near there.

4:09 pm on February 11th, 2012
CHarris: Mom still talks about when they lived up in Watertown, NY, where winters were always cold and snowy, but most of all gray and dreary. One day the sky was bright blue, and everyone was stopping at the car wash and walking their dogs. All the mothers gathered outside to talk while they waited for the school bus. My boy got off the bus without his coat on, and when Mom asked him why he wasn’t wearing his coat, he said, “But Mom, the sun is shining!” Mom said the sun might be shining, but it was still 20 degrees out! In other words, CHarris, 20 degrees IS NOT WARM! If you look it up in a science book, it’ll tell you that 20 degrees is actually below freezing!
4:25 pm on February 11th, 2012
Kirby: ha, ha. I remember washing my car at +25 and creating a skating rink around the car while doing so. But it feels so warm after -60. Ah, memories.
4:46 pm on February 11th, 2012
Kirby, since your Mom has been sick, you gotta do what I’m doing for Molly’s Mom – cuddle up, lots of sleep, and have her feed you biscuits. That’s all good for her recovery.
4:53 pm on February 11th, 2012
See, like right now, Kirby, take notes here. Molly’s Mom found some slices of nice rare beef in the fridge, so she’s having it on a nice gluten-free slice of bread, with a big dill pickle and a glass of red wine. There were some scraps left on her plate and who’s going to help other that? See?
5:08 pm on February 11th, 2012
Nothing we post is making it to the blog. What is going on?
5:10 pm on February 11th, 2012
Getting food out of Kong toys is okay with me, but I am not about to play with the silly things.

Mom and Pop are finished running errands, and they brought home goodies for tonight’s Big Birthday Celebration. Here is our girl’s birthday profile on Dogster.

It must be the link that won’t go. Wonder why.
5:21 pm on February 11th, 2012
Masquers: Im not sure that I’m going to Nome. Like SiberH, I am not tech savvy. The picture I sent of myself to Rebecca was too big. I’m afraid I’ll have the same problem with Zelda.
Belle Starr: There are plenty of snacks and food at my house. And Sunday is steak day at our house. Putting an extra steak in the broiler would be no problem…You and your mom, Luna are always welcome to blur down anytime.
5:42 pm on February 11th, 2012
Winter!….C.Harris, you have the correct attitude towards the Second Coming of Winter…snort!…We here have had winter since early October and we are getting very very sick of it to say the least ….grump! …The snow this morning really put my friend in a bad mood because she had to drive across town for the make-up blood tests they messed up last year….grumble!… But the good thing was she stopped at the store and got the fixin’s for those cabbage rolls…wheeze!…They are all finished and in the fridge out of harms way…grunt!
Project!….She even made a lot of progress on her latest project, but still have to do all the finishing touches and whatnot….sniff!….Her mother says she likes it. …hmmm….Now she is wondering what she did wrong…heh!
5:49 pm on February 11th, 2012
Barb is thawing a big sirloin tip roast for dinner tomorrow. That is sort of like steak, as she roasts it to a rare to medium rare doneness. I know there will be enought for another meal or two, plus leftovers for me.
Glad everyone seems to be feeling better today!
Where are Rio, Melanie and T & G?
5:50 pm on February 11th, 2012
By the time we posted, Rio was right above us!
6:13 pm on February 11th, 2012
Hi Barb and everyone. We’ve been busy supervising all day and now Mama says we have to turn off the computer cuz she and Dad have a date. They are going dancing and they won’t let us come.
We wanna be Valentines too!
Maybe she will be home at a decent hour and we can check back in.
6:30 pm on February 11th, 2012
Steak!….Sirloin steak and Dancing…snort!….Youse guys live way more exciting lives than I do…sniff!… Beau does like to do a nice Tail-Spin now and then, but I don’t think he would do well on a real dance floor…sneeze!… That Sirloin sounds wonderful for Sunday Supper….sniff!….My friend says she is not buying groceries again. It is far time her mother ventured forth out of this house and bought something…wheeze!… I dare say she has not left the house in over two weeks now. Who does that besides me and Beau? And not by choice mind you…grumble!
6:55 pm on February 11th, 2012
Been a little difficult here lately. So I am resting and taking care of myself.
Dan will be making a home visit with the PT person on Tuesday. We have to have the house as safe as we can make it. Been busy with that.
The PT person will figure out what Dan needs (if anything) to work on to make sure that when he gets home he be okay. Then Friday we will have the Care meeting with the Nursing, PT, OT, Doc, Dan, Zoe and me.
That’s when all will be decided. I want him to come home and at the same time I’m concerned. Will he try to do too much? Probably. I just don’t want to get into constant arguments about what is safe and what isn’t.
So I will be in and out for awhile. And I’ll definitely be under the quilt!
6:56 pm on February 11th, 2012
We were sorry to hear about Jeffrey Zaslow’s passing also. The Last Lecture is one of our favorite books.
6:58 pm on February 11th, 2012
Melanie, I am sending loving thoughts your way.
7:00 pm on February 11th, 2012
The pug has burped. The sober has yarked. The newf has drooled. In other words, I finally got my hands on the last pair of over boots in AJs size. Whew!
7:02 pm on February 11th, 2012
Siber not sober…sheesh
Melanie: I left some cheesecake there during my last visit to the center of the quilt. Help yourself.
7:07 pm on February 11th, 2012
Melanie!… I showed my friend your last post and she said that you are definitely invited to the Mountain Get-Away Cabin this August….snort!….She says if you are interested she can add a few day onto the 4-day reservation….heh!….Seriously.
Snot!….Beau just jumped up and sneezed all over my keyboard…grump!…That guy is really making me mad today. He peed on our bedroom floor earlier this morning making those two really mad at him…grunt!…What the hell is wrong with him? We go outside over and over and over and over and over…wheeeze…Then he comes in and pisses on something….grumble!…Then everyone is mad …grump!
7:31 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rio: If Beau had been abandoned before he came to you and your friend, perhaps he’s marking things to feel secure.
Melanie: All of you are in my thoughts. Try to keep calm. You’re doing a great job.
7:48 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rose: Maybe one of the techies on the blog can assist with sizing the picture you are sending to Rebecca.
T&G; Sounds like a wonderful evening for your mum and dad.
Mom just returned from the market and wants to finish putting the groceries away before starting supper…nothing as tasty as you guys are having…more like soup and sandwiches. I did spot a can of tuna for me.
Howlers: Darn! I wanted to see your Dogster link. Tell us more about the big celebration when you have a minute.
7:51 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rio: I go and go outside, too, but there’s this place in Mom and Dad’s bathroom that I really like. See, they have this clawfoot tub and one of the feet just calls to me on occasion. I just can’t help myself. A dog’s gotta do what a dog’s gotta do.
7:55 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rose,
If you’re still having trouble with your pictures and can send them to me, I’ll resize them and pass them on to Rebecca. You have my email address.
8:06 pm on February 11th, 2012
Secure!…. Well Beau should feel as secure as a caterpillar in a cocoon by now…grunt!… I understand the need to mark my territory and I used to have a big plant I used when she was late getting home…sniff!…But that’s been gone a long time now and I’ve learned not to do that sort of thing, especially since her mother lets us out every time we even look sideways at the back door…grunt!….Beau is just being sneaky and spiteful for some reason…grunt!
8:09 pm on February 11th, 2012
Melanie: Joining Wolfie here in sending you Good Thoughts and Lots of Love from the West Coast.
Rio: This is a very difficult situation to deal with. Your friend is doing everything in her power to make Beau feel welcome and yet he is still exhibiting unacceptable behavior. Wonder what his background was prior to him joining your family…..
8:18 pm on February 11th, 2012
Thanks guys. Will keep you informed.

Bear!…His background, far as I can tell is, he is from Tennessee Land O’The Hillbillies…heh!…He got in a very bad car accident on the trip here with his family. No injuries except being scared to death of riding in a car now….grunt!… He was left alone for up to 14 hours or more a day, until finally someone felt guilty and learned that my friend had an affinity for us Pugs… bugger! … Who let the kat out of that bag I’d like to know!…sniff!…He will not let anyone pick him up and this bothers my friend, she really wants to pick him up for some reason…heh! ….When she picks me up I become dead-weight so she doesn’t do that very often. But at least she knows I will let her pick me up if she feels the need to…sneeze!
PS: The gal at the busy place who dropped him off at my house never asks about him. It’s been 3 months and she has NEVER asked how Beau is doing…snuffle!….I feel kind of bad for the guy when I think about that.

We all had Frosty Paws (well, Kat had the little Frosty Paws balls) to celebrate Meashka’s birthday. Mom says the special smoked bones must wait until tomorrow because it is too snowy, sleety, icy outside tonight. Mom has to go to work at 1:00 a.m., fortunately just working from her home office. So we must say ggodnight now so that she gets a little bit of sleep first.
Sorry that the blog guy won’t allow us to post the link to Meashka’s dogstar birthday profile.
8:33 pm on February 11th, 2012
Riö, sorry about Beau marking all over. He is (trying to figure out how to put this delicately) without some parts, isn’t he?
Patsy and I are under the quilt eating cheesecake. Delish!

Watched the two premiere episodes of The River last night. It takes place in the wilds of the Amazon jungle, so danger abounds… most of it coming from supernatural sources. At times it was like watching The Blair Witch Project because of the camera work. Still undecided about this one. Although they have thrown out some interesting tidbits to pique ones interest, we’ll have to see where it goes from here.
Trying to finish up with the series finale of Big Love. One more dvd to go. And, still waiting for the second season of Justified…a very popular show.
Rio: It seems, from what you’ve said, Beau did not have a very happy life prior to this. It may take him a long time to recover from all the past trauma. We wish you the best. Your friend must have the patience of Job and a very big heart.
8:42 pm on February 11th, 2012
Parts! ….Yes Melanie, it seems Beau is missing the part of his brain that says, do not piss on the furniture of the person who feeds you…grunt! …That’s the part that is missing…sniff!
Cheesecake!…At least you and Patsy have cheesecake to eat tonight…wuffle!
8:42 pm on February 11th, 2012
O.Howlers: Happy Birthday to Meashka! (the Hot One)
8:47 pm on February 11th, 2012
Speaking of Beau…there he is…at the top!
9:14 pm on February 11th, 2012
Beau at the top and looking all innocent.
9:16 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rio, I think Melanie was wondering if his underbits are intact? Boys with all their parts might be more inclined to mark inappropriately. Maybe if he was left alone for long periods, he never became totally housebroken. On the other hand, if he is doing it right after going outside, it might be a spite thing. What about keeping him in a confined area? Or have you called Cesar?
Bear, Your Nana and Barb seem to have similar viewing taste, but she is not going to watch The River. Too many special effects of something, so we will pass on that one.
9:17 pm on February 11th, 2012
What?! I just heard Whitney Houston has died!
9:31 pm on February 11th, 2012
Drugs…..another life ruined by drugs. So very sad.
9:36 pm on February 11th, 2012
What, Whitney Houston? She isn’t very old! Was it drugs? Bobbie Brown was not a good influence on her. They have a daughter together I think.
9:47 pm on February 11th, 2012
Surprised!…. You all sound so surprised that she’s finally dead…grunt!… I actually though it would have happened a long time ago…sniff!… Poor sad thing….(((sigh)))… Movie of her life to follow shortly….grunt!
10:12 pm on February 11th, 2012
Rio, You are right, there will be a movie. Still sad, even though perhaps not expected. Thought maybe she had conquered her deamons.
We are going to say good night. Hope Amalia and Leonard are having a good date night. Maybe they will post a video of their dancing on u-tube tomorrow!
10:59 pm on February 11th, 2012
Sorry to hear about Whitney Houston. In her heyday, she was one fine singer. Lately, not so much. Very sad all around.
I think we’re going to hit the hay around here, too. Dad’s standing by to cover me with the big Iowa blanket on the couch. I think it’s very warm and cozy. Mom just shakes her head and laughs at Dad. Not sure why. What’s wrong with tucking your kid in at night?
G’night, y’all!!!
11:00 pm on February 11th, 2012
Sleep-In!… This morning I was up early because of all the commotion about the snow and her going somewhere early…sneeze!…Tomorrow, we are going to sleep in. No one is getting up early. Especially me from my warm soft bed and all my baseball toys….sniff!…I don’t know how Beau sleeps in his cold hard bed but he does. Usually on his back with all four paws straight up in the air…chorkel!…My friend gets a huge laugh over that quite often…sniff!…Goodnight!

Dear Rio,
Tell your friend that I didn’t like being picked up either. Staff would pick me up very gently and put me down gently right away before I had time to get scared and fight. After a long long while it didn’t bother me anymore. I think it took me that long to realize that if I went up I could come down without harm.
I still don’t like to be held for very long time but I will sit or lay on them happily. I think it is about the choice.
She doesn’t think she would try it with a snappy pug though. She would have to start very simply and sneakily with a snappy pug.
11:31 pm on February 11th, 2012
We here of the Shake your Bootie team are very very happy that AJ has his new booties also.
Hip Hip Hooray!!!

Rio, Beau needs to go to a pet psychic. A friend of mine took her rescue dog to one after a few months of trying to figure out the dog. She and her husband were going to leave on a trip to Mexico and couldn’t take the dog. My friend was concerned that the dog would become even more of a nervous wreck. She said that the pet psychic told her about the dog’s previous life and the worries and stress she carried. Then she “communicated” with the dog that her new owners loved her and that they had to go away for a few weeks but she wasn’t to worry. It seemed to calm the dog and she was improved. Two years later the dog had been stressed again and my friend had tried several things without success. I reminded her about the pet psychic. Now she is trying to find the lady’s phone number again.

Mama is home from date night.
It was….ahem….an interesting evening.
The Valentine Dance was actually a fund raiser, and Dad had two tickets. He was told that there would be 5 bands, each playing a decade of oldies music starting with the 50’s. And he got the impression that it would be medium dressy.
So they got there, and everyone else was in jeans and t shirts or sweatshirts. The band playing was pretty good, doing mostly 79’s and 80’s.
Then the next band came on. They were playing Metallica and Van Halen and other very heavy metal stuff – VERY LOUD. A few people were dancing, but Mama said that they had been visiting the bar enough that they would have danced to the sound of garbage cans being emptied into a trash truck.
The next band was just kind of sad. Two young guys in plaid shirts playing their own compositions, into a very tinny microphone. Lots of people left to go out to the bar or the food area.
Mama and Dad still had a good time – they sat with friends who were just as puzzled by the event as they were. And it was an amusing people-watching scene….why do the people who really CAN’T dance jump out there on the floor for every song?
So, now they are home eating oatmeal raisin cookies, and planning some other way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
