Paw and Order Launch!

It’ll be Saturday, Aug. 2 at 6:30 PM, actually slightly before pub date, at Eight Cousins, a great book store in Falmouth, Mass. Cape Cod on midsummer – hard to beat! Y’all come – as we don’t say on the Cape.

Welcome Cici.

Nice write up about TM by Eight Cousins. And one can even pre-order a signed copy there. Interesting name. Wonder if it was originally started by eight cousins?

We have had our walk, Barb is getting ready to chow down on her cantaloupe, and then head out for a little shopping. Needs to get her glasses which were not right the first time.

Speaking of cantaloupe, the other day Barb had some chopped up rind that she was getting ready to bury in her garden. I counter cruised and ate the entire bowl. Barb says there is nothing I won’t eat. And I didn’t even get sick!

MagPie, did you pull the cantaloupe rind down to the floor so Lucy could have some too?

    Morning all

Mags – good girl! We love any kind of melon rind, but we only get little bitty pieces.

Hey- have we heard from Princess Sam lately? Wonder how HER diet is going.

Good morning to my fellow Plunderers.
There is lots of excitement in this household with this terrific breaking news! Early launch date! What could be better?
The Oley Howlers there to meet ‘n greet with The Master himself.
    That’s what!

And, to Maggie: Cantaloupe, not my counter-surfing food of choice, but – High paws!
(whispering) too bad it wasn’t a steak! (it’s hard to whisper about a steak. heh, heh)

Thanks for the kudos, friends. No, I didn’t share my rind, but something tells me Lucy would have turned up her little hound nose anyway. Barb isn’t sure if I really liked it, or if I just ate it because it was on the counter and within my looong reach.

High-Five from us, Maggie! Good job! Gotta keep those 2-leggeds on their toes, after all.
Trigger, we doubt very much if Pop will want to make that very super long drive up to Old Cape Cod on the very first day of vacation. He and Mom really hate driving up 95. Hate it hate it hate it.

    Morning Everyone.
It’s Raining Here and in My Heart.
Even the Early Book Launch News can’t cheer me up.
My Favorite Grand is Flying Away…to the Big Island of Hawaii.
To Stay. To Go to School.
It’s Good for him. He will see all my Bestest Friends, Koha, Fergie, and SamIAm.
But what about us? We Here Will Miss Him. So, so much. Sob, sob.

Poor Bear – but just remember, Sammie’s girl goes away to school forever, but she keeps coming home.

Howlers – are the ‘rents doing anything fun on vacation to lower your dad’s blood pressure?

  15. B.Stover
    10:23 am on July 23rd, 2014

Bear: It seems to me that that is a very good reason to visit Hawaii.

  16. Mollypop's Mom
    10:26 am on July 23rd, 2014

I can report on Princess Sam. Her diet is going well from our view, but not from hers. She is getting 1/3 cup of kibble three times a day. The people food is only administered by her mom in a very small teensy piece. After the first week of her diet she came here to visit and I weighed her. She had lost one 10th of a pound. And actually this was in the evening where she would have weighed a bit more from her day’s eating. If this keeps up, in a couple of months her weight will be perfect under 8 pounds.

  17. O'Howlers
    10:30 am on July 23rd, 2014

T&G, as a matter of fact, he had his blood pressure measured just this morning. It come down quite a lot. It is now not “high” but is still in the pre-hypertension stage. Now why was it so much lower? Well, he did cut out salt. And he was on call so no beer. But what we really think is that i was because this was first thing in the morning, before his schizo boss had a chance to raise it.
So therefore: (and we don’t usually handle the so therefores), just being out of work for 2 weeks will be enough to lower that there blood pressure.

Howlers – teach your Pop that mantra “not my circus, not my monkeys” for times when he is dealing with the schizo boss.
(Why is it that so many crazy people are bosses?)

And speaking of those problematic monkeys, we wonder how things are with ML.

Mom found another mutant zucchini, along with 3 nice ones. We here can’t keep up with these. She planted 2 plants. Note to Mom: only one zuke plant next year.

  21. O'Howlers
    11:07 am on July 23rd, 2014

T&G, but it is his circus, unfortunately.
Mom told him that he needs to not let his boss or 2 particular co-workers affect (Bee?) his health and life. He needs to let it all roll off, and remind himself this is just a job. And the reason for the job is to come here to our peaceful farm where those people can’t bother him (except when he is on call…grr)

O’Howlers, Yep, being our of work for two weeks will certainly lower ome’s BP.

The long list for the Man Booker Prize came out today. It’s the first time that the Prize is open to all novels originally published in English and not just British novels. Four Americans are included this year. (One time when I taught our English novel class, I created a syllabus that included only novels that had won the Booker Prize. Fun!)

BearSpiritDog: I am excited for your “grand” but know you will miss him terribly. It’s his time to soar!

Paw and Order coming up! I will have a few extra days of anticipation while Masquers (thank you, zen kat!) gets the book sent up to me.

Masquers: Perish the thought! There is really no such thing as priority mail up here. It all comes the same way except if the package is labelled “priority” it is as if the word meant, “put me on the bottom shelf for a week or two, then send”. If the package is marked “fragile” it is as if the word meant, “poke me with a sharp stick until you hear the sound of breaking glass”. I like that my book is coming NOT from Amazon. 🙂

It is very hard to not let the crazy bosses get to you. Even if your logical mind tells you they are nuts and need to be on meds, it still gets to you. Very lucky here to be out of that situation. John is a super nice, if mostly absent, boss.

Roly poly? It is so easy for women of a certain age to become roly poly. It gets harder to keep the weight off after age 40-45. Seems like the metabolism really slows down after that.

    Where is ML?

    The word “b o o k i e” is short for “b o o k m a k e r” and refers to someone who keeps records of b e t s most often at a horse race. In England the term “turf accountant” is also used. Thus, it’s similar to b o o k k e e p e r.

    Hey y’all, I’m still kicking,

Spent some extra time with the Alaska relatives, who left this area today, even some time with the sister and her spouse. Still in evening summer camp, about to leave in a few minutes in fact. Yesterday I applied for my very first loan on my own, to change the car to my name. Not that big of a deal but…I was approved, and they kept the interest rate the same 2.65% that it was so I am a happy camper. Now we have to repeat the process for Angie’s car that was also in Rick’s name.

Never fear, even through blogger’s block, I’m watching every move you make. Let that be a warning. (insert wicked laugh)

We made zucchini noodles tonight! We just used a potato peeler to make the noodles, then sauteed the “noodles” in oil and garlic. It was very good.

Siber, we don’t like recipes that try to disguise zucchini as something it is not. We like recipes where it is just zucchini, pure and simple.

We also had t-bones and corn on the cob.

  84. Tupper and Gilly

Gramp took one of our mutant zucchini to the farmers market today. We were right – it is actually a Hubbard squash. The very knowledgeable farm lady said the plant was probably spreading out all over the yard – it is. And she said that each blossom could become a squash.
Oh…My…DAWG! There are about forty nine blossoms on this dam thing. Guess you know what we will be offering to the next Snowhook Auction.

  86. Barb & Maggie

T & G, Mystery solved. However, every blossom will NOT be a squash. Squash plants have male and female blossoms. Yes, I am being totally serious! The male blossoms out number the female blossoms and are comparatively useless. Hahaha, just like is some other species, right? The female blossom has a tiny baby squash behind it and the male blossom does not. The males are there to fertilize and that’s it, sort of like drone bees. And we all know what happens to drone bees when the going gets tough! Feel free to pick some of the male blossoms if you want to cook them. And leave the girls to do their business!

Both the recipes for summer squash look good to me. Thanks guys.

I picked two more today. They were normal size. I also have a pan of beans to be processed and then frozen.

Sent out the package to CHObbit today. Tried to send out the one to BlueKat but evidently vanilla is a dangerous substance and can’t go priority (air), it has to go ground. So since I had packed it nicely in a priority box I had to repack it.
    (((big sigh)))
However Gail at the post office gave me a box that my priority box fit inside. So since I packed the vanilla very carefully in a small box, and then put that in the bigger priority box and now I have put that box in a third box I think this should be a really safe packing job.
I hope BlueKat will be able to get them all open when they finally arrive! Unless I encounter more problems it should go out tomorrow morning.

And for dinner tonight we had grilled chicken with citrus ginger seasoning, green beans, zucchini sauteed with green peppers and onions with Parmesan cheese, and our first Paul Robeson tomato, sliced.

I just went over to check facebookie and my cousin Mike who adopted Pepper, the Siberian Husky rescue dog, had this on his page. Tank is his other dog. A rather large dog…snicker.

“Got home from work last night, and it was the usual routine. Take the dogs out, go to the basement, feed cats, get dogs fed. But wait!
Where’s the pail of cat food? It’s been in the same big lidded pail for, what? 15 years? And it was gone. A big, square container holding 8-9 pounds of cat food.
    So I started searching.
Not in the basement. Not on the first floor. I found it in the upstairs bathroom. Pepper did it. I know Pepper did it. She says she didn’t. Tank says “Oh, God, I told her to stop. I did. But she wouldn’t listen!” Demon Girl. I think I can see the fork at the end of her happily wagging tail.”

I told Princess Zeta about Pepper’s grand adventure and she was quite impressed. Of course, it stll pales by comparison to Ms Zeta and an entire beef tenderloin.

I see that Miss Gilly now has top billing!

I have been upgraded (?) to all-day camp now 10-4 starting tomorrow. Anybody want me to make them a bracelet?

Thanks to those corgis I feel sure there will be squash in my dreams.

If you use a potato peeler to do the squash do you discard the peel (rind, shell, outer covering) Keep in mind I don’t generally do veg, but I am considering this.

And if you do zucchini with a potato peeler, leave the skin on, just wash it first.

Mike says the lid was still intact and no cat food was eaten by Pepper. She just seems to want the cute container.

I think Pepper is going to be a typical Mike pet. He has the oddest and most interesting animals.

I am not worried about the mutant squash. I don’t think they can get past the electric fence. Not with the amount of leaf and stem they are trailing.
