Patriots’ Day
“Probably the favorite day of the year for a lot of Massachusetts people,” Admin says. “Marathon day, and there’s always a Red Sox home game that starts at 11 AM, so they’re both going on at once.”
“Plus it’s spring, and everyone’s in a good mood,” says Spence.
Admin and Spence go quiet.
Welcome Rocky & Toby, Molly.

Well-said, Spence and Admin.

Hoping and praying for a bit of Good News today.
9:14 am on April 16th, 2013
We all need to take a moment to ponder and perhaps say a prayer. And speaking of prayers, any word on Leonard this morning?
9:22 am on April 16th, 2013
We are hoping for good news today. Still no news on who was behind this henious act. We are thinking it is not an organized terrorist group, as they usually take “credit” right away. Probably a deranged individual. They will find him.
Amalia mentioned a blood clot last night. When Barb had her surgery, they checked constantly for that condition. Evidently the chances of a clot spikes on the 7th day and then again on the 28th day. No idea why. Barb had to take shots in the tummy for 30 days. It was a thinner called Lovenox and was a lot more expensive than coumadin (warfarin), however, you don’t have to have blood draws to make sure the blood is not getting too thin. Barb was a little uncomfortable with the idea of giving herself a shot, but it really wasn’t too bad. Wonder what they have Leonard on? Hope to hear from Amalia soon.

“And much it grieved my heart to think/ What man has made of man” (Wordsworth, “Lines Written in Early Spring,” 1798).
Good morning all.
9:44 am on April 16th, 2013
Molly’s Mom is coming to pick me up today. Then she will get to see the needlepoint surprise that I bought with my treat money.
9:53 am on April 16th, 2013
B: Sad to think those lines written over 200 hundred years ago still ring true today.
Wishing everyone a good morning.
10:10 am on April 16th, 2013
Sammie, you are a good and generous princess.
We are worried about the Storyteller, and we hope that Rio’s friend stays home if the roads are scary.
Am unable to understand such evil.
10:11 am on April 16th, 2013
(I am referring to Boston, not the roads of Denver.)
10:13 am on April 16th, 2013
Masquers: (from yesterday) Smelling the potpourri instantly took me back to the same smell–the paste we used in elementary school. It was at least forty some years since I had smelled the paste. That demonstrated to me the power of the sense of smell.
1798 was nine years into the French Revolution, a period known as The Reign of Terror.
10:15 am on April 16th, 2013
Don’t know, Wolfie, some roads may qualify if spring storms continue.
10:33 am on April 16th, 2013
Greetings all. The doctors kept us informed throughout the night. They are treating Leonard for a blood clot and fever. He just called me a couple of minutes ago and said the fever broke and he has had a decent breakfast and a lovanox shot. But he may have to stay another day or two.
We continue to watch the marathon coverage and the phrase “man’s inhumanity to man” keeps running through our head.
Macy – where did you put that reset button?
10:39 am on April 16th, 2013
Will keep Leonard in our prayers as even good news could occasionally use a little assistance.
10:39 am on April 16th, 2013
Well said all. I listened to the on-line radio NPR station from Boston last night. I used to listen to it when we lived there.
My guys are shocked. We spent many good times in Boston. Day off? Let’s go. The Marathon, First Night, July 4th, going out for tea (once) after that going to delis, ice skating on the pond, Children’s Museum and then a few years later the art museums, it was our go-to town.
10:40 am on April 16th, 2013
Amalia, Is he going to take the Lovenox daily for a month?
11:09 am on April 16th, 2013
Today we are taking one car in to get worked on, leaving it there, going out to lunch and doing errands.
That is if either of us can move.
11:46 am on April 16th, 2013
Barb – lovanox just for a few days. But they will keep a constant eye open for swelling and redness. Interesting thing is the gigantic hematoma that has blossomed on his hip. Honest to goodness, it looks like a deliberate pattern – kind of like a black and blue tattoo.
This guy sure dies come up with some unusual after effects.
And now they are saying he CAN go to rehab today.
My head is just spinning…..
11:47 am on April 16th, 2013
Royal Mum: That is most welcome news!
Riö: Hoping it is a snow day for your friend and she is with you and Beau safe at home.
12:02 pm on April 16th, 2013
Yeep! Tupper’s Mama, Seems a bit Soon for rehab, but what do we know.
The Storyteller’s black and blue mark is an interesting memento of his experience.
B: Someone here remembers that smell of white paste from school days gone by. It was quite unique and very intoxicating.
12:03 pm on April 16th, 2013
The smell of a freshly opened box of crayons. No make that Crayolas. They smell better than the off brands. One whiff and I am at the first day of school, first grade. ahhhh
Hang in there Amalia. The hospital just wants to see how much confusion you can handle. I think they call it a stress test.
Hot and muggy here. Can’t turn on the A/C and am getting close to the minimum amount of clothing I am comfortable with.
I just discovered a whole new pile of info on dead relatives, so I am off to sort them out. My mom calls and asks, “who did you dig up today?” I promise, no shovels are involved.
12:04 pm on April 16th, 2013
Snow!…It is a snowy day, that’s for sure…grump!…But my friend left for the busy-place after shoveling the long, long driveway and digging out her car…sniff!…Beau and I just watched her go from the front door…wuffle!…I just know she will never come back again…sob!
12:14 pm on April 16th, 2013
To all youse birthday mamas and puppies. I had a friend who got her first ever kitten and reported being jumped on every night from the headboard by the little kitty at 2 am. She thought it was funny. I told her she had to stop that habit before the kitten grew up. That little kitty became an 16-pound cat jumping on my friend. I did warn her…
12:17 pm on April 16th, 2013
I hope the people under the quilt are resting and healing well and regaining their good spirits. I still think 4 Snowhook puppies and their mama need to blur in for a visit. Nothing puts smiles on faces as quickly as a puppy and 4 would just quadruple the fun.
12:21 pm on April 16th, 2013
C.Hobbit: It’s true. Nine or Ninety. Forever Young to Mom.
Macy: White paste, Crayolas and Mimeographed paper. Ah.
12:45 pm on April 16th, 2013
Macy: If you aren’t comfortable with being in a state of significant undress, do not play strip poker with the Sisters.
CHH: Many a time, I have looked over to see Belle Starr laying on top of Luna. Luna had a nasty habit of sitting on me when I was but a pup and she was a mature several month older than me. I was small for my age. She was not. If she didn’t want to play anymore, she would sit on me. It worked until I hit a growth spurt and then I sat on her.
12:51 pm on April 16th, 2013
I thik they try to get you out of the hospital and into rehab by the 3rd or 4th day if possible. Barb is on Medicare, so she had to stay 3 days before they will cover the stay in rehab. Boy did they boot her out on the 4th day!
We saw a new commercial for a Visa card. They show a giant Newfie and show the couple going to the store and buying LOTS of dog food. Then they switch back and show the couple when they first picked up the puppy. Only thing is, it is not a Newfie pup! Probably a Lab. When they were making the commercial the producer probably said “get a little black puppy in here STAT”.
Has anyone else seen the commercial yet? Anxious for Melanie to see it.
1:09 pm on April 16th, 2013
Good to turn on the computer and learn Leonard is doing so much better today.
Rio is having snow and we are having blue skies, over 80 degrees, and wind. Rio and I are not that far apart “as the crow flies”.
Mimeograph paper was Mom’s favorite smell. She says you could get high on it. I think she is having some sort of false memory issue.
1:18 pm on April 16th, 2013
Siber-H: It is true…Mimeograph paper & White paste were the “drugs” of the day…but not Crayolas.
1:29 pm on April 16th, 2013
Barb – thank goodness someone else saw that commercial! It was on last night, but the Storyteller had the sound turned off since he was sleeping. We told Melanie about it, but we couldn’t remember who the advertiser was. (doesn’t that tell you something about the effectiveness of the ad?)
Our Grandma was a school teacher for many years, and in those days only certain teachers could run the mimeo machine, she being one. Mama remembers late summer days of going to the school and “helping” mimeo worksheets and puzzle pages etc. That smell evokes wonderful memories of close times of mother and young daughter, laughing and playing in a big, warm empty school, while outside there were sounds of playground swings squeaking, tether balls being bounced back and forth, and the chants of jump-rope and hop-scotch games.
sniff
Thank you for bringing back the wonderful memory of a special time.
1:36 pm on April 16th, 2013
Mom remembers choosing her wardrobe to “go with” ink from mimeo and later ditto machines 🙁 Aretha, the original newf here, got tired of being “picked on” by her sissies so one day just sat down…on whomever was close. End of problem. Class smell of the 80″s…white board marker. That stuff could kill braincells!
1:48 pm on April 16th, 2013
Amalia, We had to chuckle over your comment on that commercial. Had to watch it a second time to see who the advertiser was so we could tell Kelly. After the first time we had no idea either!
1:53 pm on April 16th, 2013
Whiteboards should be illegal.
2:08 pm on April 16th, 2013
B: Please elaborate as I knock the chalk dust off my rump.
2:16 pm on April 16th, 2013
The markers really stink and the whiteboards are impossible to clean completely. (Of course chalk dust always drove me crazy.) Using a projector connected to a laptop or tablet is the answer.
2:19 pm on April 16th, 2013
Ah, would work if one were computer literate. Fortunately mom retired before that was needed, just had to learn grading program and zip drive load and unload.
2:29 pm on April 16th, 2013
I am not really that literate when it comes to computers but the students definitely were. It was fun having them help with the technology.
2:49 pm on April 16th, 2013
Yep. Little angels could really make computers do anything.
3:17 pm on April 16th, 2013
Remember being in high school and getting the mimeograph papers to pass from the front of class to the back. Every student would strongly inhale of the stack of papers before passing it back.
Mom works at a car dealership now and one of the file rooms is behind a couple of racks of tires. Mom likes the smell of the tires! Weird woman!
Hang in there, Leonard. It will get better (but we are still saying prayers here!)
3:34 pm on April 16th, 2013
Time for Barb to take off. Get Jack up from his nap, pick up Lyla at school, got to their house, change clothes and do homework. Then back here to let me out and give me dinner. Next back in the car and head down to Kelly’s home for Lily’s 11th birthday celebration. Lily got to pick the dinner, so it is Italian beef from Portillos, home made mac and cheese, salad and chocolate cake. Yummy!
Bye for now. Will keep all under the quilt in our thoughts and prayers.
3:51 pm on April 16th, 2013
Barb, You are a Busy Chickenlady.
Magpie: What do you do all day while she is off doing her thing?
A Very Happy 11th Birthday to Lily!
4:06 pm on April 16th, 2013
Speaking of smells, puppy breath is the best. Ah, just the thought of it takes me back to…last night when I was hanging out in the pupternity ward.
When my Lady was a girl she helped MaBella prepare for the school year just like T&G’s mum. Copy, stack and staple.
4:17 pm on April 16th, 2013
Bev!…She’s a teacher? What grade?…sniff!
4:20 pm on April 16th, 2013
Rio: She teaches first grade. She is an amazing teacher, plus she has understands the importance of having a secret treat stash. I like that about her.
4:28 pm on April 16th, 2013
Mom has jury duty today. She is trying to decide whether it is better than working…..
4:30 pm on April 16th, 2013
The Storyteller has officially arrived at Weldon Rehab. Woo Hoo.
His nurse is lovely, the bed is comfortable and he has his own tv. What more could you ask?
4:33 pm on April 16th, 2013
Mr. Tenzing!…Tell Rebecca to check her SDD when she can…sniff!
4:34 pm on April 16th, 2013
Home, hale and your own germs!
4:36 pm on April 16th, 2013
Tenzing: Wow! K & 1st. Mom always said those were the hardest and need the most respect. Without that foundation, where would the other grades be (but don’t get her started!)
5:01 pm on April 16th, 2013
“Take one and pass it back” the daily litany of school. I was always at the back of the room. At my school, we had to sit by height so that us “giants” didn’t block the view of the “littles”. It was not until 4th grade that I realized that I should be able to read the board from back there. I really wanted to sit on the front row, just once.
5:06 pm on April 16th, 2013
Barb is back for a bit. BSD, she never leaves me alone for more than 4 hours, so I usually just take a nap while she is gone. Even when she worked 2 days a week out in Lena, she always came home and saw me at noon.
Having a private room with your own tv is the only way to go. Room mates never have the same taste in viewing.
5:14 pm on April 16th, 2013
You school daze smells are taking me back. I had Zoe as a teacher fourth grade. The third grade eacher said I seem to have trouble seeing the board. I was also a biggy. I was five foot eight inches in the seventh grade. Zoe told me to sit in the back of the room and behave myself.
Several months in she bean to realise that I COULD NOT see the board much less the writting on it.
I remember coming home with my new glasses. I would slip them on and off. I was amazed at the world.
5:55 pm on April 16th, 2013
Sam and I are now here in golf country. The golf course opened yesterday – just the front nine holes. The other side of the creek is the first fairway. If anyone decides to play that hole, they better have the golf balls that come in all the bright colors!
I love the needlepoint surprise! Instead of plain wool yarn I have some lovely silk and wool which gives a subtle sheen.

6:05 pm on April 16th, 2013
MollyPop’s Mom, when I was very young, I did embroidery. Shirts and skirts. I loved going into the shops and seeing all the colors and the feel of the thread.

Tomorrow I am NOT going anywhere. Thank Dog.
I’m zonked.

Hey Riö and all,
Has anyone watched the movie “Bag of Bones”? Taken from the novel? The novel scared the pants right out of Franklin. snicker
Want to know:
Is it worth watching?
Is it a day or night watching movie?
7:10 pm on April 16th, 2013
Melanie!…It sounds like my kind of movie!…snort!…Too bad I have never heard of it before….sniff!
7:21 pm on April 16th, 2013

Home again, home again, jiggedy jig
Whew! Mama is just worn to a frazzle. The doctor kept calling her last night, all night, every two hours to report on the status of the blood clot. Then a well meaning friend called at 7 this morning to see how everything was.
She went to the hospital at 10, was told the Storyteller would be moved at 3. She did errands and got gas (actually Gramp pumped the gas for her – Mama has no idea how to do it) and got back to the hospital at 2:30. The ambulance arrived at 3:30 and Mama followed them to the Rehab – good thing she drives like Mario Andretti, cuz those ambulance guys sure do.
After getting him settled in and unpacked, she left the Rehab just in time to see an eagle circling up overhead. Feeling much better about things, she stopped for coffee, and on a whim, bout a lottry ticket. Won $10. Things must be looking up.
But now she is toast, and is going to bed. Thanks everyone, and see ya tomorrow.
Oh – and Kat, good for you. The Howlers will make a “real” Sibe out of you yet. tee hee

T&G’s Mama: Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.
Good Storyteller news, thank dawg.
Mom has had siber mixes in herds past. Loving, inquisitive, clever, vocal handfuls!
Shutting down here early. Nighty night. (Last part of sleep tight is: But if they do, just grab your shoe, and beat them till they’re black & blue! The grands love it 🙂 )

Speaking of puppies, two of the four were loose this afternoon. They may or may not have seen me scale the fence a couple of days ago. Quick learners, I say.

HOH – you vill please refrain from saying Sibers are cleaver, smart, or intelligent. There are certain Sibers on blog who already have big enough head vithout encouragement!
(Is only CERTAIN Sibers. Vons who live in desert. Vons who live on pretty horse farm, vell, maybe they are cocky, but still very cute)
9:11 pm on April 16th, 2013
Kat, your portfolio is breathtaking.
9:13 pm on April 16th, 2013
I was in the 7th grade when I told Maggie I needed glasses. She was not sure I really needed them. Maybe I was just trying to get some attention in Maggie’s Herd of Kids.
She had to let me say ‘I told you so’ though. I remember being in my first gym class and finally being able to see what was happening on the other side of the gym.
I too liked the smell of mimeographed paper.
Storyteller! Way to fight off the infection! We are still keeping you in our thoughts.
Kat, you have to stay in the east. If you came to North Dakota I would worry about our rock foundation.
9:19 pm on April 16th, 2013
Blind!…Someone here says she was blind in 2nd grade. Her trick of pinching her right-hand thumb and index finger together on the pad of her left-hand index finger and making a little hole to look through so it would focus the letters on the blackboard was not keeping her afloat in the grades dept….sniff!…So she finally broke down and admitted she could not see and ended up with those pointy tipped glasses (for the rest of her live-long days)…grunt!
9:25 pm on April 16th, 2013
And speaking of Rose’s favorite team…..

Announcers!….They just said “It feels like Anchorage.”…heh!…I doubt they have any idea what the temperature in Anchorage actually feels like…chuffle!
11:04 pm on April 16th, 2013
Anchor town! It is t-shirt weather for many two-leggeds. It is in the forties this week. At the kennel, we still have a few feet of snow left, but it is melting everyday. Nice days like this make me want to have a nap in the sun, or two, or three.
11:07 pm on April 16th, 2013
HAAAA!…I laughed out loud for a split-second…sniff!…If I knew how to get on that thing-a-ma-jig where you can type in questions to our announcers during the game, I would inform them of the high temps in Anchorage right now….heh!…I’m hoping someone else will..sniff!
11:16 pm on April 16th, 2013
