Oscar Night

Normally on Sundays we take a look at the beginning of a Peter Abrahams novel including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker, but since it’s Oscar night, how about this little snippet from A Fistful of Collars, the Chet and Bernie novel where a movie star plays a big real-life role? Bernie is talking to Nixon Panero, owner of Nixon’s Championship Autobody, but also movie buff.

“That’s a whole scene?” Bernie said. “A guy tosses in his sleep?”

“All depends on how it’s handled,” Nixon said. “Film’s a director’s medium – gotta keep that in mind. Take the cigarette lighting scene in Now Voyager – what would that look like on the page? Zip. But on the screen … well, there are some things you never forget.”

Nixon couldn’t be more right about that scene in “Now Voyager.” I have never seen the film, but I have probably seen this scene 1000 times!

HOH: I am more of a classic film buff. I think the only nominated film of 2019 I have seen is “1917.”

    Good day to all!

There is an interesting article about the film on Wikipedia. It includes a description of the cigarette-lighting scene. The title of the novel that the film is based on is from a Walt Whitman two-line poem, “The Untold Want”: “The untold want by life and land ne’er granted/ Now, voyager, sail thou forth, to seek and find.” And I love the main character’s line in the film: “…don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” (This is all in the Wikipedia article.) Fun!

    Good morning all.

HRH B, Thank you for the info on Now Voyager, the poem and the movie.
We enjoy your background and insights into today’s topics.
We have always been tickled by Nixon Panero’s insights.

I interpret Whitman’s poem to be about death: If the voyager can’t find what he wants in life, perhaps he can find it in death. I think the reference to sailing is interesting because in Greek mythology Charon (a psychopomp) is the ferryman who took the deceased to Hades. It seems that the last lines of the main character in the film (played by Bette Davis) is telling the man she loves (but can’t marry because he is already married) not to ask for too much in life.

I think the poem is about being on the big bed.
