Opening Day!
Bernie’s pretty excited. “Baseball’s back!”
Love baseball myself. I have two at the moment. One’s buried under the middle tree out front. The other – what’s left of it – is out on the patio, behind the swan fountain. The insides of a baseball are so interesting! I’ve proved that to myself many times and just might dig up that ball this morning and prove it again. Why not?
Bernie picks up the phone. “Should we plunk down a little wager on the World Series, Chet?” Wager: please no. We don’t do too well with wagers, and our finances are a mess. The Hawaiian pants, the tin futures – and what didn’t happen at the end of The Dog Who Knew Too Much!
” … a grand,” Bernie is saying. “Phillies over the Red Sox.” He hangs up, gives me a big smile. “I’m feeling it, big guy,” he says. Oh, Bernie.
Welcome two dudes from South Carolina, Sammi. Paddy and Rocky: please try reloading.

Oh, Bernie! Chet: What “swan fountain”?
Good morning all.
8:46 am on March 31st, 2011
And I wonder what didn’t happen at the end of Dog Who…….
How many hangovers this morning? (Martinis are my specialty and the secret ingredient is Vernors.)
8:49 am on March 31st, 2011
Hey B! I’m wondering too….
Good Morning to all!
Oh, Bernie!
Let’s go Yankees! Moose is throwing out the first pitch!
8:53 am on March 31st, 2011
Bee, Barb says she remembers Vernors from 40 years ago when she lived in Detroit. Very unique taste!
Bee, you and I have a long season ahead of us. We are in the minority here. Bernie never learns, does he?
Great time was had by all last night. Good thing we don’t drink any more. No hangover here, just full!
9:25 am on March 31st, 2011
Hi Rose and B&M!
I remember tasting ginger ale for the first time and wondering why it didn’t taste like Vernors.
There must be a point to baseball, etc., but…..sigh.
9:26 am on March 31st, 2011
Good morning! Mom got back from Florida late last night. There was a long delay in Atlanta due to bad weather. Then Mom saw snow here and said “phooey!”. I see I missed a big party last night. Well we still have to get back to ski country after we drop Sam off at the groomer.
Lots of catching up to do but I see I finally have someone to root for the Yankees with. Hi Rose.

Good Morning all. MollyPop- HI! Glad you and Sam are back, but we did miss you at the party last night. Natasha was especially hoping to meet you – something about you being the Head of Computer Intelligence??
OOOOF – trying to move sleeping, snoring Newfs and one Siberian Husky…boy, he was right…he doesn’t listen to ANYBODY!
Thanks again for coming everyone. Looking forward to next week.
(Bee…could you make Rio’s martinis just a little more Vernors and a little less vermouth?)
oh, and Bernie, Bernie, Bernie……sigh….
9:36 am on March 31st, 2011
Good Morning All! I’m feeling tip-top today. Not sure how the Pack is feeling. The Newfs came home around 6 am and fell asleep.
What was Bernie thinking when he placed that bet? The Red Sox won’t lose!
Speaking as a mom of two of the Red Sox Nation . . .
I don’t watch the games, I nod when my guys are talking, and I never call during a game, or if the RS have lost a game, other than thatI totally support the Red Sox.Leaving for PT. Will be back later.
9:59 am on March 31st, 2011
Baseball!… I didn’t think it would ever come back, no I didn’t!…Woooo!… I still have to wait until Friday for my teams opening day. Then I will have to watch most of the game alone because it is in the afternoon and she will be at the busy-as-hell place….snort!…Oh well, I will still enjoy it….chorkel!
Bernie!…Thank gawd he didn’t mention the Rockies in his bet. Everything he puts money on goes down the drain….snort!
10:01 am on March 31st, 2011
I am not a baseball fan unless the giants are in the World Series!
Welcome back, Mollypop and Sam. We missed you! Have you read the exciting news regarding Whitey-Lance?
10:23 am on March 31st, 2011
Welcome back Mollypop and Sam!
T&G: I’ll put all Vernors in Rio’s martinis, with a twist to match his tail instead of an olive…shaken not stirred.
11:03 am on March 31st, 2011
Tupper&Gilly:You sure know how to welcome the Party Animals! The hors d’oeuvres were out of this world (thanks for the recipes!) Sorry about having to leave early, but we were informed of a power outage which had to be handled pronto. If those judges don’t invite you to that art show we will be very surprised. Let’s just hope your kiln person is a little more careful in the future!
11:12 am on March 31st, 2011
Stover. That is very interesting about Vernors. My dad’s mom was from Detroit, so he has more than a passing familiarity with Vernors. A bit of an acquired taste, but once you do acquire it, regular ginger ale is pretty bland. Putting it in a martini (my dad wants to know if that is in lieu of or in addition to vermouth) is quite inventive, perhaps making it sort of dirty martini (for those who don’t know, a dirty martini iw one with olive juice as well as the olive mixed in). Also, my mom likes her martinis with Italian hot peppers rather than olives — gives it a real spicy kick. Me, I am a bit of a traditionalist, taking it the same way as my inspiration, Mr. Bond (as in Bond, James Bond . . . ) does. Wookie
11:16 am on March 31st, 2011
Mollypop:
I am so happy to know someone other than myself recognizes how great the Yankees are!!
This is the 50th anniversary of the Mantle-Maris batting title…I think the Yanks play the dreded RS on the actual day..
11:26 am on March 31st, 2011
Baseball! Nana doesn’t show much interest until later in the season, but we know there are rabid fans out there (Rio?).
Chet:I prefer tennis balls myself – very chewable. But, what’s this about Bernie? Oh, no! Here we go again…
11:28 am on March 31st, 2011
Wings!…I’m still eating hot wings….heh!….I stuffed my little knapsack full of them. They are delish!…snort!…I doubt I will have any left for the Rockies first game….chomp!chomp!
11:32 am on March 31st, 2011
Hello all. Wish we could have been at the party..sure sounds like you all had fun.
Opening Day here is tomorrow … in the afternoon so we hope we can manage to catch updates while Mom is at work.
12:01 pm on March 31st, 2011
Wookie: Vernors instead of vermouth and Absolut Vodka instead of gin. However, if one insists on gin, then Beefeater. Bluecheese-stuffed olives top it off.
12:36 pm on March 31st, 2011
I bet some of you cats on the blog can top this. Click to hear the purrrrr.

12:43 pm on March 31st, 2011
Baseball: Giant’s opening day today at L.A. Home opener is April 8th at S.F. Wilson & Ross still on disabled list. New guy, Brandon Belt, will be 1st baseman.
12:46 pm on March 31st, 2011
B: Stoli’s is good too (I’m sure Natasha would agree). What’s the difference in taste between Vernor’s and vermouth?
O.Howlers! We missed you last night. Maybe you can come next Wednesday? Who else was missing?
Mollie: Yep! That’s kinda what Masquers sounds like volume-wise.
12:57 pm on March 31st, 2011
B. I like Stoli’s also. I like Grey Goose too. I love Blue Cheese stuffed olives.
1:06 pm on March 31st, 2011
Actually on the gin front, we prefer Hendricks, which is just great in martinis. Hendricks is produced by William Grant & Sons in Girvan, Scotland. In addition to the traditional juniper infusion, Hendrick’s uses a hint of Bulgarian Rose followed by a mash of cucumber. Hendrick’s gin is bottled in a dark brown apothecary-style bottle. It was rated by the Wall Street Journal as the best gin in the world in 2003. Also partial to Bombay Saphire. On the Vodka fronnt, both Absolut and Stoli are fine; just not that big a vodka fan (sorry, Nathasha). Wookie
1:34 pm on March 31st, 2011
B! I just remeembered! I know what Vernor’s is – although it has been a long, long time. Your mention of ginger-ale did the trick.
1:38 pm on March 31st, 2011
Ve also love Vernors – vhen we vere based in Detroit to spy on ….oh, cannot tell you that part…but anyvay, ve loved to make ginger tea vith it. Just put tea bag in cup, fill vith Vernors and microvave for minute or two until Vernors is very hot, then just let tea bag sit for minute or two.
Very good for hangover, or after eating too much good caviar (or hot vings).
1:41 pm on March 31st, 2011
Mollie: Didn’t the Giants play & win yesterday in San Francisco? Must have been a pre-season game.
1:47 pm on March 31st, 2011
I love Wookie’s “gin notes”! Stoli is good but I think that Absolut is smoother.
Bear: Vernors is labeled a “ginger soda” and is a stronger version of ginger ale. Vermouth is a fortified wine with herbs. To me it tastes like bland medicine. Vernors (just a soupcon–one quarter jigger to two jiggers of Absolut) gives the martini a bit of a zip. Has to be served very very cold.
I wish I could have a glass of Cahors….
1:56 pm on March 31st, 2011
B! Our paws are covering our face in embarassment! But must say – had never heard of Vernors in a martini, or blue cheese stuffed olives. Sounds good!
2:00 pm on March 31st, 2011
oops! that’s “embarrassment”.
2:16 pm on March 31st, 2011
We have Bombay Saphire but after reading Wookie’s post I will have to get some Hendricks. If it was voted best in the world, it must be good.
Bear: Yes, it was a pre-season game. They played the A’s and won.
Zito was in a car accident, but guess he is OK.
2:24 pm on March 31st, 2011
Reposting something Zoë wrote on yesterday’s blog
Zoe here. Loved lurking the party. Dan is from Flint and introduced me to Vernors’ in1948. Never did figure out the loyalty. Must have to be from Michigan. Thanks for sharing. Melanie’s Mom (and proud to be!)
2:30 pm on March 31st, 2011
Zoë told me that I have had Vernors when I was very young.
I don’t remember it.
I dislike helpful idiots. Some guy added 45 minutes to my driving because he said there was a FedEx on my way back home. Right . . .
It was an UPS.
Had to drive back to PT and from there FedEx was only 2 minutes away.
Jeez.
Now the computer is calling for 7.5 inches and the TV forecasters are calling for over 12. It’s 42 right now and snizzling.
3:02 pm on March 31st, 2011
On the eagle cam, two eggs now and the larger one has cracks in the shell!
3:17 pm on March 31st, 2011
If it comes down to the Phillies vs Red Sox most of us on this blog will be for the Red Sox. Mom and I will. The watch will be going back to the pawn shop.
I don’t have a hangover but I have a very full tummy. Thank you T&G…it was a lovely party and a fun sleep over. I slept really good. It is a nicer climate up here than NM. Suppose to get up to 75 here today.
Hey Rose, Have you ever seen that movie, 61, about the Mantle/ Maris home run race. That is mom’s favorite baseball movie. Mom is a big Mickey Mantle fan, but a Roger Maris one also.
I’m going to post this, but don’t worry if I don’t make it back today. My internet is trying to freak out on me.
3:20 pm on March 31st, 2011
Melanie!…Can you put up the link to the Eagle thingy. I want to see big sister eat little brother when he hatches….heh! ….Talk about hot wings!….yeep!
3:23 pm on March 31st, 2011
Stover!….Or anyone. What do you make of the book I found on Amazon called Was geschah in Echo Falls?….snort!….It is written by the Charming Mr. Abrahams, and it has the look of an Echo Falls book, but there is no description available…grunt!….Doesn’t “geschah” mean “was” in German?….sniff! …Strange stuff.
3:28 pm on March 31st, 2011
Bear: I think I may have invented a Vernors martini. It’s very nice….if you can’t drink Cahors…sob!
Melanie/Zoe: Vernors is very good for upset stomachs also. Try it in a martini (snicker!).
3:48 pm on March 31st, 2011
Rio: I think that would translate to “What Happened in Echo Falls?” It may be the German translation of one of the Ingrid books???
3:57 pm on March 31st, 2011

Boy I never knew that sleeping on a Newf could be so comfy.
Great party T & G and Herbs. Sorry I left before breakfast, but I had things to do at home.

Stover !….That explains it! Thank you very much!….snorkel!
4:28 pm on March 31st, 2011
Melanie and Rio, It looked like there were still 3 eggs, but you are right, one is hatching. Last week there wer 6-8,000 live viewers. Today, almost 51,000. This pair has 3 prior hatchings-2,3 & 3 eagletts. Evidently in the past, they fledged all hatchlings, which means there was no murdering of little brothers. Sorry to disappoint! If you Google Decorah Eagles, Ustream, it should give you the link.
4:42 pm on March 31st, 2011
B: What’s with this sudden yearning for Cahors? Can it be found only in France? I’m not familiar with it, but do like a nice glass of Cabernet. Thank you for the ratios in the Vernor’s Marini.
5:10 pm on March 31st, 2011
Bear: I think I have an “allergy” to sulfite/sulfate which is in red wine (actually white wine contains more sulfites). Cahors is my favorite and I have four bottles which I can’t drink. Actually, I will probably drink it but not yet.
5:12 pm on March 31st, 2011
Wolfie – Yes, I do see that we are sponsoring a very special dog, Whitey-Lance, for next year’s Iditarod. Mom will send money to them and she said it won’t even have to come out of my Internet shopping allowance.
5:21 pm on March 31st, 2011
Mom has been watching eagles since about 1998, so for 13 years now. The first were in Barton Cove, Mass. and the cameras were not video, just a still picture once a minute. Then the equipment advanced and one time Mom got the see the baby come out of its shell, just as she was talking on the phone to her boss. The tree with the giant nest blew over in 2008 and the eagles built a new one in a nearby tree, but no camera. So for the last 2 years Mom watches this one in Virginia. Three eaglets are there and getting big. Mother Eagle is still brooding them with great difficulty.

Welcome back Mollypop! We missed you.
I think they have gotten my internet fixed, for now.
6:02 pm on March 31st, 2011
Hi, Molly, we missed you, but hope you had a good time.
Just got a call, Grands and Kelly will be arriving in a half hour, and Barb is just leaving work. We will probably not have a chance to post till tomorrow. Have a nice night everyone!
6:16 pm on March 31st, 2011
Hey Wookie, do you have your martinis like James Bond did in Casino Royale, with the Kina Lillet?
Natasha, I love your accent.
Morning everyone! I’m going to go look at eaglets now.
6:19 pm on March 31st, 2011
I’m loving the eagle cam! That is so cute. The mother looks like she’s thinking really deep thoughts.
6:27 pm on March 31st, 2011
Howdy MollyPop! Glad you’re back.
BearSpiritDog: It is not a “sudden yearning for Cahors”. There were long discussions about the best, where to get it and everything you ever wanted to know about it. Sometime last year, I believe.
Time to do the kitchen. BBL
6:57 pm on March 31st, 2011
Hey, y’all! Mom’s here and she turned on the computer. Not only that, but she’s going to be here for a loooong time!!! Dad has spring break next week, so Mom decided to take off work starting tomorrow. Dad would rather go somewhere on vacation, but Mom says she’s taking time off to get a lot of projects done on the house. She wants to finish the closet and a bunch of other little things that have been lingering. Dad went right from football practice after school last fall, to basketball practice in the winter, and now lacrosse practice in the spring. He doesn’t get home until after 6:30, plus some nights he has duty or games, so it’s even later. And with Mom working every other Saturday, and Dad having Saturday classes and weekend games, they’re hardly ever here at the same time, which makes it hard to get stuff done.
Mom says she’s giving Dad the weekend off, then after that it’s work, work, work. I’ll be around to supervise, and I’m sure I’ll be a big help!
7:10 pm on March 31st, 2011
KirbyT. I’m not sure how long she’s going to be on the computer. It soundsas if she wants to do a WHOLE bunch of things on her time off.
7:12 pm on March 31st, 2011
Liz – vhat accent??
Rio – so you vill not holler on Natasha for short post, I vill tell you – my butt itches.
7:15 pm on March 31st, 2011
Melanie: She says that now, but when push comes to shove (not sure what that means) she’s happy to slack off — a lot!!! With me supervising, I’m sure I’ll be able to talk her into a bunch of computer time!
7:21 pm on March 31st, 2011
Natasha is cracking me up.
7:49 pm on March 31st, 2011
Natasha!… You do know how to scoot and rub, right?…snort!…Squat down, one of my favorite positions, and pull yourself across the best and most lightly colored carpeting in your house….heh!…This always does the trick for me as far as butt scratching goes…sniff!
Eagles!…. I wonder which web cam will be more exciting, the one with the cracked egg and little brother waiting to be devoured or the one with the Eaglets fighting for food….heh!
7:51 pm on March 31st, 2011
*whispering* that borzoi is funny!
Hey Nat, how does the itch justify the short post?
7:56 pm on March 31st, 2011
Yuck . . .
They’re still calling for about 7 inches. We’re having rain right now. The Cape has had some snow and ice. Hope Audrey is enjoying herself.
Night all!
TTFN
8:00 pm on March 31st, 2011
Liz – Rio Pug scolded everyvon for making the short post. He said ve vasted time and his precious first von hundred vith silly little posts about things such as butts itching.
But this is proof that B.Stover is actually Supreme Commander of Plunderers. Even Rio, the very grumpy little spugnik does not dare to scold Bee for the short post. Is very funny vhen he snorts and sniffs but ve think he is only pretend to be grumpy.
8:19 pm on March 31st, 2011
Natasha!…or should I call you Bozo for short…heh!snort!heh!… Prof. Stover has proved herself a worthy Plunderer and Agent over time, even taking on Mike Baker during one Mission….snort!…She is beyond reproof, and I am glad to be in the same blog spot as she is on any given day….huffle!…You on the other hand, are Nefarious, Sneaky, and assume others Identity. You may even be a double-spy, our Agents haven’t figured out what you are up to…sniff!sniff!….So no short posts for you or you will be on the Blame it On Rio Shit-List…grump!
PS: I do not pretend to be Grumpy…snort!… I truly am Grumpy when I seem Grumpy…sniff!cough!sneeze!
8:36 pm on March 31st, 2011
Wow!….I spent a lot of time trying to get Molly’s Bald Eagle link to show me something, but it never did…grump!…So I went to MagPies’s link, thank you Melanie, and am amazed at seeing a mother Bald Eagle on her nest right now!…Zowie!…How cool is this? She is so majestic looking, and proud to be an American…heh!
8:37 pm on March 31st, 2011
So – you admit that Natasha is Nefarious and is Vorld’s Best Undercover Spy!
But my dear little chubby blintz – you spelled Borzoi wrong.
8:43 pm on March 31st, 2011
Hi everybody! Its been a loooonnng day. One of Mama’s co-workers at the Crazy Lady place was rushed into surgery. She is going to be fine – home already, thank dog – but, she will be out of work for 3 weeks. So the Crazy Lady is about to become a grandmother to the very first baby ever born in this universe (that’s pretty much the way CL sees it), and she is freaking out cuz now we are short staffed, and she wants to be away for a couple weeks too.
So Mama is going to be working lots and lots and lots of extra hours. We won’t see much of her at all since she will get home late and want to just crawl into bed to get ready for the next day.
But the party is on for next Wednesday. Thats Mama’s day off and she refuses to change that for anyone.
8:45 pm on March 31st, 2011
Gasp!….She, the mighty Eagle, just got up and gently rolled her eggs over, and then nestled down on them again….sigh!…I will never sleep again, I will continue to watch this unfold till the wee hours..….wheeze!
Bozo!…You’ve once again got it all wrong, wrong, wrong…heh!
8:55 pm on March 31st, 2011
Tupper!… My friend is nearing the intensely busy-place season, so she will be late all the time and I will practically starve to death …grump!… I can’t make it to all your dinner parties, my friend refuses to drive me that far every freakin’ Wednesday night for hot wings for gosh sakes…heh!… I will comment on the activities though, so have fun! I will be there in Blame It On Rio Spirit…heh!heh!
9:01 pm on March 31st, 2011
Rio – repeat after me – B O R Z O I
Vhat are you? Some kind of clown?
9:05 pm on March 31st, 2011
BOZO!…Yes, I got it!…heh!…Your perfect nickname…snort!…Love-it! Live it Natasha, live it!…heh!…What are your thoughts on the American Bald Eagle my dear Bozo?…grunt!
9:06 pm on March 31st, 2011
Gosh Rio, I think you have discovered Nattie’s button. You are very good at pushing those buttons. Poor Natasha to have revealed her weakness to the Plunderers like that.
Heh heh heh
9:10 pm on March 31st, 2011
Web-Cam!…You guys who are experts at this like Molly, doesn’t the light at night bother the mother Eagle?…sniff!…That just seems very intrusive into her life on the nest….grunt!…Why can’t they turn the light off at night and give her some privacy?…wuffle! …I feel bad watching her now when its nighttime and she is trying to sleep…sniffle!
9:14 pm on March 31st, 2011
Melanie: Thank you for the update!
B. Sorry to hear about the allergy…
Time to sign-off. See you all in the a.m. You remember what day it is, right?

9:34 pm on March 31st, 2011
How do you get taht emoticon to dance???
9:40 pm on March 31st, 2011
Gosh I have to go to bed now. Too bad just when things are getting interesting. The Twins are at Toronto tomorrow. Our opening Day isn’t until the 8th. After Toronto we go to NY and let those gol-durn Yankees beat up on us.
So sad.
goodnight all

Liz!…heh!…That is for me to know and you to find out…snorkel!
Mother!…On the other bald Eagle web cam, mother has her back turned away from the light…sniff!…I hope she sleeps well tonight. That light would bug me if I were her…dammit!…Molly’s web cam seems more attuned to the Eagle and I will try to see it tomorrow in the daylight…gruffle!
9:49 pm on March 31st, 2011
Liz!…Stick around this year for baseball season, maybe you will learn a few things…heh!heh!heh!
9:53 pm on March 31st, 2011

I can tell it’s going to get very basebally in here!

Liz!…And everyone, I promise it won’t become Baseball Central…snort!…I will contain myself and only if provoked by other baseball fans, will I get baseball central-like…heh! …I promise! At least for the first 162 games…snorkel! …If we go farther than that, all bets are off!,…gruff! wheeze!…I will probably report on the outcome of the game, or if anything wonderful or unusual happens..sniff!..Just because!
10:05 pm on March 31st, 2011
Sammie!…I am so glad you are back!….snuffle!…I missed you so very much…gruffle!…I hope you are well and too bad about the wonderfluffy stuff…cough!

We missed you Sam. Glad to have you back with us and looking lovely.
I read your baseball reports, Rio.
I’m following the Giants/Dodger game tonight. Posey made an error which got the Dodgers one run ahead. Tim is pitching.

Aunt Mollysmom was packing bags today and when she left the room I wanted to see what she had. I love to poke through bags. I had to get my head and front paws in there and I found the bag of microwave popcorn still in the cellophane. It was hard work but I got it out and dragged it into the next room. It took about four tries before I could jump up on the couch with it. After all my hard work i got caught and my loot was taken away. No fair!

It is a good thing it got taken away from you, Sam. You could have ended up with a serious tummy ache.
Rio, that is ditto on the choke, cough, sneeze…blowing sand today and pollen. Mom just took two allergy pills, so she will be out of it soon.
