On The Medical Front

“What did the vet say?” says Admin.

Spence sighs. Don’t see that too often. “Looks like she’s got a torn ACL in her left rear leg.”

“Torn ACL? How can a dog tear the ACL? Four legs means less load on each, plus … plus all sorts of reasons why it’s impossible.”

“Nevertheless,” Spence says. “The surgeon will have to confirm the diagnosis next week, but it seems pretty certain.”

“Never heard of such a thing,” Admin says.

Silence.

Welcome Whitey-Lance (get some rest, big guy) and Rusty (pretty sure it’s Rusty; please repost if not).

Audrey? Has to have surgery?? Poor girl. I hope she goes okay.

Oh Audrey, The Pack is sorry . . . If you have to have surgery, swimming is very good for joint recovery.

Audrey, my poor Audrey. Please don’t worry. Veterinary medicine has made great strides in treating everything and I know that you will be just fine. Look what they are doing for me. If I can do it, you can too. Prayers and paws crossed for successful surgery (if necessary) and a speedy recovery from your special friend Wookie.

Melanie, Barb tried to watch the eagle cam yesterday, but one of the little gals was hopping around precariously close to the edge, and teetering backwards (shudder) so we had to shut it off.

Barb’s bro has a Chessie that had to have the ACL repaired, and Kelly’s Newfie, Max, who has now crossed over, had to have one done, too. Both were on back legs. Surgery is not inexpensive, but our results were good with both dogs.

Hmmm. The Eagles’ camera lens seems to be getting warmer.

We’re going to have two days of rain. Of course, the weather people are saying “just small amount of rain.” That’s 1 inch. Which (if it were cold enough) would make 6 to 12 inches of snow. That they would call a major snow storm.

    Pondering here. . .

Spence and Admin: Wookie is correct. Audrey gets love and care from you and she’ll get top treatment from her vet. My best thoughts are with you.

Audrey is going to be just fine. Mom has up close and personal experience with the torn ACL in the rear leg.
The dog before me, the Border Collie, tore that ACL in the rear leg when he was 5 years old. He had the surgery and did the recovery and never ever showed any lameness or favored the leg once it had healed from the surgery. It was as if he had never had a problem in that leg. Mom does know how he tore the ACL…he ran into a low concrete block wall while chasing a ball.
Spence, please keep us posted on this because we all love Audrey, and we are sorry she will probably have to have this surgery.
This is not an uncommon injury in dogs…Husky Rescue had to get a torn ACL repaired recently in one of their guys before he could go to his forever home.
Husky Hugs go out to Audrey and Spence and family.

Rio, (from last night) I did see Lincecum almost fall over. I would not want him to pitch a no hitter against the Rockies, but I would love to see him get a no hitter…tee hee against the Dodgers would be the most fun of all. If he pitched a no hitter at Dodger Stadium that would be the coolest as long as the cops were out in force to protect Giant fans.

I’m off now to find that picture of one of my heroes, Whitey-Lance, in the Friends of Chet section.

  28. B.Stover
    1:35 pm on April 19th, 2011

Melanie: I chose “human” on all of the samples but I think that’s because I’m so familiar with the pieces that the mechanical didn’t “sound right.” One thing in the article intrigues me: “We got the best-sounding music from the velocity curve of natural human gestures, compared to other curves of tempo not found in nature.” Pondering what that means.

I’ll see if I can find any decaf coffee that looks “real.”

    Crap, crap and triple crap!

Mom was on her way to a meeting last night when some guy came around the curve on her side of the road. She was lucky because she wasn’t hit completely head on, but she ended up in the er and the guy was arrested. What a mess. No broken bones but everything hurts now.

Awww, Wolfie…I am sorry to hear that. I am very glad your mom doesn’t seem to have any serious injuries, but, yes, everything will hurt for awhile. It does mess up your life and is no fun to deal with. Your mom is in our thoughts and prayers.

    Ouch!
Audrey: It seems as if this is a fairly common injury for dogs. Take it easy until your next appointment.
    Me too!
Walking briskly to appointment with tax preparer yesterday. A dusting of snow on the sidewalk covering up some glare ice. Whomp! Suddenly I was flat on my back wondering what hit me. Nothing broken, although wrist is still sore today. At least I get a refund on my taxes.

B.Stover: I picked the human on two and the 50% human on one and the even volume on the last one.

Siber H: Did that just happen automatically or did you actually hit submit twice? Either way, welcome to the doubles club.

Wolfie, Oh, no, here comes Barb with some insurance info –
Mary, you probably have some medical coverage on your own insurance policy. In most states people carry it, tho not required. Auto medical is always primary, so even if you have health insurance, auto medical will cover first. That covers you and anyone in your car, whether at fault or not. If you carry collision, your company will cover your car and then go back and subrogate against the other company – or induvudual, if there is no insurance. As long as it was not your fault, most copmpanies will not raise your rates. Also check to see if you have rental and towing on your policy.

  59. BARB & MAGGIE
    4:47 pm on April 19th, 2011

Mary, Also if the other driver’s insurance is in effect, then a “permissioned driver” woud be covered too. If you loan your car, you are loaning your insurance.

If you have to cover the car on your own policy, the collision deductible will apply till they collect back from the at-fault driver or company.

Audrey: Owie! How did you manage that? (Of course I come from a family where my girl torn her knee picking up her pom-poms, and Mom sprained her ankle doing storytime! I guess sometimes it doesn’t take much!) I hope your better and trotting on all four in no time!!!

    1/2 to 3/4 pound hamburger
5 to 6 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled

    1 T worcestershire sauce
    3/4 C barbeque sauce
1 C brown sugar (NOT packed)

Drain and rinse beans. Brown the hamburger in a large pan; drain. Add beans and remaining ingredients. Heat until warm.

(Note: The fun thing about this recipe is to let everyone have a taste and say what it needs more of! Dad took over this recipe, so this is his version, but you can vary the ingredients to taste. Oh, and I tried to tell him that brown sugar is supposed to be packed into the measuring cup to get an accurate measurement, but he says that’s not how he does it. So just spoon it into the measuring cup without packing it down!)

Now that we are about half way through Started Early, Took the Dog, we are loving it! Definitely worth reading if you liked the first one, Rio. Not sure how many of her books have the character Jackson Brodie in them, but I think this might be the 3rd or 4th in the series.

I think Bear is going to keep us guessing as to what his current energy form might be.

Update: no baby goats yet, but we can see them kicking on the sides of the mama. Last time, before they lived here, Stormy had twins, and accepted one and rejected the other, who had to be bottle fed. That baby grew up to be Sandy who is now her best friend. Hopefully she will be a better mother this time. Otherwise we will have to see if Rio has any spare bottles.

Heh!…We are reading an older book by the Charming Mr. Abrahams and today we read a passage that kept my friend laughing all afternoon…snorkel!… I wonder if it would be alright to quote it here…sniff!…I think so. First a little background to set it up. In the book we are introduced to a guy named, Brucie who blatantly does illegal things, but his slick lawyer always gets him off. This annoys his enemy, Chang the INS agent, to no end. This agent wanted to be a policeman, but he is too small, 5 foot 2 inches, 103 pounds…heh!…He has it out for this Brucie cause his lawyer just got him off AGAIN amazingly! …snort!…Here is the passage:

“Brucie unchained his dog. Man and dog got into the Trans-Am. Brucie pulled away from the curb, burning rubber like an adolescent. Chang followed. The beer can soon came floating out of Brucie’s window, bounced on the pavement and off the bumper of Chang’s car. Chang, perched on the phone book he needed to see over the dash, his tiny feet on the blocks attached to the pedals, spoke aloud. ‘You’re dead meat, asshole,’ he said. He didn’t let Brucie out of sight.”

Oh!… It was so unexpected the phone book and the blocks on the pedals, we laughed so hard I can’t tell you….yark!yark!…heh!snort!heh! ….Maybe you will have to read it to get the hilarity…heh! sniff!…oh my.

Oh – that’s a relief! Amazing variety though… When the brits eat BB on T they are in a tin that says ‘baked beans’! They’re navy beans in a tomatoey sauce. This recipe calls for navy beans – are they plain ones in a tin, no sauce?

  115. Siber-H
    10:01 pm on April 19th, 2011

Liz, I am sure that when the recipe says navy beans that they are plain ones in a tin (no sauce)that just have to be rinsed. I understand that the navy beans and kidney beans have to be rinsed, but Kirby will have to let us know about the pork and beans. I have my doubts about rinsing them just like Barb does.

Sorry, guys! Dad called me in to supper just after I posted the recipe, and I’m just getting back to the computer. Yes, indeed, you do rinse all the “juice” off the all the beans — otherwise the result is too “liquidy.” (Before Dad started doing that, someone thought he had made chili!) And Liz, pork n’ beans is just beans with a few little pieces of pork fat in them. And the navy beans come in a can with a very thick sauce — almost a paste!

Even then he was an ‘old pro’ and one of the wives brought these beans to the pot luck. I asked her give me the recipe. This is it exactly except maybe for the amount of brown sugar. Staff: It doesn’t surprise me that you have the same recipe, since you live in Minnesota and Mom was living in Iowa when she got this recipe. I think it’s one of those Midwestern things! How much PACKED brown sugar does your recipe call for?

  123. Staff
    10:36 pm on April 19th, 2011

My recipe calls for one cup of sauted onions and I only use 1/4 C. of the brown (packed) sugar, and 1/2 C. of the barbeque sauce. I rinse the other beans, but not the pork and beans. OH! and the pork and beans is the larger #10 can, not a small (15 oz.)one.

So OK it is not identical, but I bet they were once upon a time. My recipe is over 25 years old.

Sounds like a lot of accidents on the blog today. But if you are superstitious, we had 3 and that is all we need to do. Things come in three’s and we have had ours.

Healthy healing thoughts to Audry, Wolfie’s Mom and Dawson.

I would like to help Liz with the cookbook too.
Also I think we might need to consider that we shouldn’t sell these recipes if they are copied from another cookbook. Even if it was many years ago. I don’t know where the beans came from, for instance, so we might not want to use them. We might be sued. Probably B. knows the rules. Or Spence and Admin. would be good sources for this rule.

I think if we make it just for ourselves that would be not problem.

Unless we actually made up all the recipe’s ourselves. I only have two that I truly created myself in all my recipes. ((Sniff))

CHarris: The first year that Mom’s family moved from California to Iowa it was hard for everyone to get used to winter. One day Grandma went down the sloped driveway to get the mail. You guessed it — she slipped and fell. She picked herself up and dusted herself off and went back inside, where she proceeded to roll out a couple of pie crusts. Her arm kept hurting, so she finally decided to go to the emergency room. They were bringing in all sorts of injured people — including a little girl with a splinted leg who they plopped in a wheelchair and rushed into an exam room. Grandma started feeling silly — maybe she should just go back home because it didn’t feel so bad after all. But then all these people started coming out of the exam rooms wrapped in ace bandages — just sprains. And when they finally got around to seeing Grandma, turns out she was the one who got the cast!!!

And then she did the same thing a few years later — when she was pregnant with my Uncle Michael. Everyone was worried about the baby, but he was fine. That’s when she belonged to a bowling league, so she had a “bowling ball” in front, her right arm in a cast, and she was bowling left-handed! I wish I had been around to see that!!!
