Good Morning HOH, tupper’s Mama, B. Stover, Staff and everyone else as you check in.
I just found a cache of training pads I had forgotten about, so have started the day by saving money and am thus happy. Plus six bunnies sighted! Now I just have to make it into school and give an exam, maybe read a few papers.
I am looking forward to a wonderful day and wish you all the same.

Good morning all. Our rainy day is transitioning into a snowy day. Temps are dropping and we are supposed to get 30-40 mph gusts later today. 2-3″ snow accumulation which sounds like nothing compared to 7 feet.

Rio, We talked last night about Joel and Julia on Parenthood. I did like the new guy too, and Joel behaved pretty badly over the last season. I think that he realizes his mistakes and has his priorities straight. Julia came close to an affair with the recently divorced friend last year, and that was what started Joel’s derailment. If they end up together, which I think will happen, their marriage will no doubt be stronger and better for what they have experienced. IMHO

I have one more question for you regarding Parenthood. What did you think of the way Kristina and Adam handled the problem with Max at school?

I thought they displayed a total disregard for the other students involved and showed that they really are not qualified to be school administrators. Sometimes Kristina is very annoying.

The first morning the Storyteller had his artificial ears, the microwave beeped when it finished heating something. The Storyteller asked what the beep sound was since he had never heard it before.

Rio, funny but we don’t find Crosby annoying at all. But I really like Dax Shepard in real life, so maybe that has something to do with it. He and his wife, Kristen Bell, seem like very normal, down to earth people and very family oriented.

T & G, funny story about the talking coffee pot!

Snow pack is why all the Minnesota houses have highly sloped roofs.

Mom, Maggie, could hear the leaves rustling in the trees when she got new hearing aids. (Years ago) She wanted to know what that sound was and none of us could figure out that it was the leaves for quite a while. I LOVE the sound of the leaves. Especially in North Dakota where the wind through the shelter belt sounds like the ocean.
    **** CAUTION>>> Mr. Staff cooking story follows…
Dawson and I raided two grocery stores today and came home laden with food to find Mr.Staff doing the dishes and boiling what he thought was a hot dog on the stove. I know Rio will love this story. When he took it out of the pot it sort of fell apart and he discovered he had been boiling a frozen banana. He was rather grumpy and went out to a local store for a meat hoagy. I did offer him some egg salad but he refused.

Tomorrow we are going to Penzey’s for some special East Indian spices for Dawson.

Diane, Sorry to be carrying on about these t v characters as if I really know them. However, after watching the Braverman family in Parenthood for 5 seasons, one can get pretty involved. The show almost got canned last year, and then was renewed for this last season. With all the actors involved, it was just too expensive to continue. We are down to the final four shows. It has been one of my favs for all 5 years.

Collapse from weight of ice or snow is one of those perils insurance companies list that always sounds like it is never going to happen. Same with buildings being damaged by falling aircraft. Really? Well just the other night in Chicago a plane crashed into an elderly couples house, and missed killing them by inches. I think it destroyed the entire house. They were unharmed.

Gov. Cuomo did talk about implementing New York State’s own weather forecasting system. Don’t know if he’s really going to or not but he was very unhappy with the poor reporting when Superstorm Sandy hit and now this snowstorm. In both cases there was not adequate preparation because the National Weather Service didn’t know/report how bad either storm was going to be.

    Good Afternoon All,

Just a quick update from the trails…. As many of you know we’ve had exactly one inch of snow fall this year and that has made training a challenge for this time of year. In fact rain last week brought everything to a halt for a couple of days this last week.

Last weekend I packed up the team and headed into the mountains to the town (gas station and lodge) of Eureka where they reported four inches of snow. Skeptical all the way up with no snow in sight when I arrived there was in fact trails. We broke out the sled and 110 miles later felt much better about our training schedule.

I just returned yesterday from Eureka again where the team and I ran around the clock and managed a 150 mile run. The catch to this however is that only about 30 miles of trails are actually usable right now so we did loop after loop. With one exception.

Bored with the trails I called out a “gee” to the team and headed off into the bushes and tuseks to see if I could access a different trail. This proved to be reminiscent of last year’s Iditarod but eventually we got to an open valley with an amazing view. Sometimes it’s worth getting off the trail to see what’s on the other side of things. The photo is from this weekend’s trip onto the Eureka lakes. The team is doing well and is working according to our plan for them. I’m excited to see what they can do once we actually get some snow and can do more diverse runs.

The team that Phil is running is also coming along. As many of you may know Phil is a rookie musher this year who has been learning the ropes from Rebecca and I on how to run Iditarod. Phil comes out on weekends to run the dogs and together we’ve been putting everything he needs for this race. At times from my perspective it’s a lot like training a puppy but he is learning. He has been running my veterans and a few puppies. Phil was able to come along this weekend and from my observations my veterans on that team are working flawlessly. Though when they see me go past them it seems to me there is a longing in their faces to be back on my team. I do miss running those guys. The puppies are also working well and are advancing as planned. The only catch with the dogs that Phil is running is that he has been struggling with foot care which worries me some. No paw, no dog as the axiom goes. Putting together two teams for Iditarod with Phil’s part time help has been a challenge for Rebecca and I but it seems to be coming together.

In other news, the Iditarod Trail Committee is slowly coming out with the news that they are making significant changes to the trail. Along with Cruz construction they brought in heavy machinery to the “farewell burn” area of the trail in order to expand out the trail and eliminate obstacles. Apparently they grinded a path 10 feet wide and 26 miles long from the farewell lakes back towards Rohn. This area has the post river glacier, burned out woods, gigantic holes and much more that will be supposedly eliminated this year. As some of you may know this area took out the largest number of mushers last year. It’ll be interesting to see if it makes a difference in the safety of the trail. I can however now say “back in my day we didn’t have these fancy safe trails”.

Thank you as always for your support and care. We appreciate everything all of you have done for us. If any of you are coming up for Iditarod this year Rebecca and I look forward to taking you out on a ride.

    Safe trails,

I know this is the season of giving, so tell me if you think I am being uncharitable. There was a bearded, semi-scruffy guy sitting on the curb by the grocery store. He was holding a sign that said “Help a Vet” and he had a can for donations. I almost rolled the window down to hand him a couple of bucks when I noticed he was smoking. I thought, if you can afford to buy a pack of smokes for $7-8.00, why should I hand you money. What do you think.

  47. Herd of Hounds

Barb, do not beat yourself. Sometimes folks like that are legit, but occasionally it is a scam with 3 or 4 guys with a “route” they work and make good money. The smoking was bad PR. You did not engage him or verbally judge him.

Barb: in Anchorage there are scruffy men wearing camouflage pants or jackets and holding similar signs at main traffic intersections. There is no way to know if they are legit or not–I see the same ones at the same intersections everyday. It is actually illegal to give them money from a car since it often holds up traffic. So even if they only get money during the brief time the traffic is stopped at red lights, they must be making enough to make it worth their while.

I prefer to give to charities that in turn help the homeless or underserved.

It’s official – we have adopted a spoiled rotten little kitty. We had him secluded in Gramp’s office, with occasional visits out into the world while in a crate. Then we started bringing him out sans crate to see how introductions would go. We then put a baby gate in the office doorway to keep certain kibble munching Corgis out. Basil and Sage would leap in and out to visit and showed CubKat the technique. Today he has been out of the office all day, socializing, tearing up and down the stairs and sitting on the kitchen table – usually a no-no for kitties, but he is just so dam cute….

The Storyteller has taken to calling him the Wild Kat. Coincidentally, one of brother’s favorite songs and one to be featured at his funeral was “Born To Be Wild”. So CubKat’s new theme song is……yup, you got it.
