Now That We Have A Title, Here’s The Opening: The Dog Who Knew Too Much
Was I proud of Bernie or what?
True, he’d been pretty nervous going into this gig. I can always tell when Bernie’s nervous – which hardly ever happens, and never when we’re in action – because his smell sharpens a bit, although it’s still the best human smell there is, apples, bourbon, salt and pepper; but now, up on the stage, he was doing great.
“Which, um,” he was saying, “reminds me of a joke. “Sort of. Maybe not a joke,” he went on, turning a page, “more like a – “ and at that moment the whole wad of papers somehow jumped out of his hands, all the pages gliding down in different directions. He bent and started gathering them up. That gave me a chance, sitting a few rows back, to recoy or recon or something like that the joint, always important in our line of work, as Bernie often said.
We were in a conference room at a hotel near the airport, and everyone in the audience – maybe not quite as big as it had been at the beginning, when Bernie had tapped the microphone, a painful sound for me, pounding like drums right next to my ears, although no one else seemed to mind, cleared his throat and said, “Can, uh, you hear me all right?” a terrific start, in my opinion – was a private eye, on account of this was the Great Western Private Eye Convention. We’re partners in the Little Detective Agency, me and Bernie, Bernie’s last name being Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple, and we’d been in business for almost as long as I could remember, although we’d never been to a convention before. “Not our thing,” Bernie said, so that was that, until Georgie Malhouf, president of the Great Western Private Eye Association, offered Bernie five hundred bucks to give a speech.
“A speech?” Bernie had said.
“Twenty minutes, tops,” Georgie Malhouf told him. “Plus questions.”
“I’ve never given a speech in my life.”
“So what?” said Georgie Malhouf. “There was also a time in your life when you hadn’t had sex. Did that stop you?”

For Rio, who needed a hug yesterday.

Love the beginning. Though equating speech giving and sex is a bit of a stretch.
I wonder what Chet is going to find during his "recoy or recon or something like that . ."
I'm thinking that the dog that knew too much, might not be Chet. . pondering here. .
Also Riö, the Pack sends you big slobbering from the tip of your tail to the tip of your nose kisses and then they think maybe you could use a great big group hug from all of them.
I send a small kiss on your "wettle wet nose."
4:49 am on November 4th, 2010
Love it. Title and beginning and wicked humor.
Rio – please accept a head butt from a Kat. Love you, babe. Hope today is better.
4:59 am on November 4th, 2010
Rio, I'm giving you kisses right smack on your Puggy nose. Then some ankle nips from little Princessy moi.
5:01 am on November 4th, 2010
Love the beginning, I'm sure looking forward to reading more!!
5:10 am on November 4th, 2010
Anyone with the name Malhouf seems questionable to me. Bernie's finances must be more of a mess than usual. I feel for him. And I love the beginning. Thanks for the sneak peek Spence.

Again, Hi Joe, hope you join our frolicking gang!
5:13 am on November 4th, 2010
Welcome Joe Erickson and good morning all.
5:14 am on November 4th, 2010
Oh, and don't let a certain Pug pull your tail, he's harmless.
He's just in an incessant grumpy mood, lightened a tad by a biting sense of humor, with a very soft heart.
Speaks the "scarecrow"

Good morning all, we are at it early today. Mom feels anxious, I think it may be like getting all poodled up, but anyway, she is trying to settle down by going online, so we will see how that works. She could use a few head bumps herself. We are trying to be good, we will see how long that lasts.
5:19 am on November 4th, 2010
Stupenda! …Geniale! …Bravo!… What a great opening (and a great title)….snort! … I can hardly wait for it….snort!snort!
Gosh!… Thanks for all the hugs, kisses, slobbering, head butts and even the ankle bites… sniffle!… You guys are the best pals in the world… snuffle!
Look! … Joe’s back for the third day…sneeze!… I wonder if he is going to become a regular?…hmmm!
5:31 am on November 4th, 2010
Scarecrow!… heh!… You’ve embraced your nickname….hoorah! bravo! magnifico!….I feel like Italian food today and all I have is dry kibble and a chewy strip hidden somewhere in this house.… grump!

Here's an article from the NYTimes Music section for Bernie. It's a review of a concert given by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

Good morning Rio. Such Italian exuberance!
Macy's mom: Calm down and plunder on. You know you can. (As I always tell my students, "Plunder your minds and find the solution.")
5:47 am on November 4th, 2010
Okay!… All you English majors, minors and everyday hackers what do you think of this sentence up above? …sniff!… Spence leads off with “We were in a conference room at a hotel near the airport, and everyone in the audience – “ then he inserts the vivid description of Bernie starting his speech and then finishes with “- was a private eye, on account of….” snort!… I think it’s genius!…wow!
6:15 am on November 4th, 2010
Rio: It's genius in the way it demonstrates the quickness of brain and senses (in dogs and humans I think). How many had to go back to find the subject of the sentence?
6:17 am on November 4th, 2010
Rio: Also, the content of the sentence and the manipulation of the reader are very humorous.
6:19 am on November 4th, 2010
I've just seen my first Junco of the season. He's in my garden hopping around for sunflower seeds which I threw out. The first sign of winter.
6:25 am on November 4th, 2010
B, my Mom loves juncos. She says they look like they've been dipped in white paint, because they're white around the bottom. It's not like the standard bird breast that comes up the front.
6:28 am on November 4th, 2010
Stover!… I almost laughed out loud at this line, “…and at that moment the whole wad of papers somehow jumped out of his hands, all the pages gliding down in different directions.”…. Poor Bernie… wheeze! … I think their finances must be in an awful mess to put himself through such obvious torture…. heh! … He’s going to have to do something about those Hawaiian pants!….snort!
6:39 am on November 4th, 2010
Sam: And Juncos are so clean-lined and compact. They find food with their feed instead of their beaks. They jump forward in one spot to find any buried morsels. They do that in snow and in dirt.
6:52 am on November 4th, 2010
B, we didn't know that about juncos. We see them on the terrace getting seeds that fell from the bird feeder. We will have to watch more closely.
6:53 am on November 4th, 2010
I know Bernie pays child support but does he also pay alimony? That should stop after Leda marries Malcolm shouldn't it?
6:55 am on November 4th, 2010
Macy my dear,
Here is a purr from me and a tail wave from Alice. We hope you are feeling less anxious after a little blog time.
I have started taking my blood pressure after I read Chet's blog and I am down about 30 points from before I did it this way.
I am sure my kidney doctor will be very happy when I tell him the news.
6:56 am on November 4th, 2010
Oops.
That is Staff has started taking her blood pressure. Mine is fine, but now Rio will laugh at me. sniff sniff sob
7:08 am on November 4th, 2010
AbbieTheKat!… If your blood pressure is down that much you’d be dead as a doorknob…snort!… Although, with all that weight you carry around, maybe it’s a good thing it’s a little low…..grunt! …Are you guys still out at the farm or did you move back to “town”….snuff!
7:32 am on November 4th, 2010
Love the opening. Can hardly wait for book #4.
I know most of you don't care, but the parade for the S.F. Giants was wonderful yesterday. They had a ticker tape parade down Market St. with orange confetti. Some of the players gave short speeches. Brian Wilson went crazy. It was interesting to see him without his hat on. My boy's friend tried to go but the bridge over to S.F. was at a standstill with cars. I don't know if he made it or not. They say 1 million people were there.
7:39 am on November 4th, 2010
MollieABP: Thank you for the great description!
Where is SH?
7:46 am on November 4th, 2010
Mollie!… I care – The Giants are the World Series Champions!…snort!… Not a small accomplishment!… grunt!

Poor Bernie! Wonder what Chet's looking for with his recon. Loved the beginning and can't wait for more. Here's hope that the release date will be a matter of months, not a full year.
Gus gave M&D a scare last night. He has a heart condition and had some kind of a seizure last night. They were pretty crazy until he came around. Only lasted a few minutes but seemed longer. He seems fine today. Hope he doesn't do that again.

WOW!! Mollie (ABP) Thanks for all the photos! I'm happy for the Giants and enjoyed watching them play.
Delayed Husky hugs to Rio! I don't want to make him sick so there will be no non-slobbery kiss…just a hug.
This is a great beginning to Book #4! I am hooked already and looking forward to the Great Western Private Eye Convention and Chet and Bernie's new adventures.

Mollie APB — Incredible pictures and a great use of the blog space, so no worries there. And a hat tip from Admin via Chet to boot. Wow!
Boo Bear — I think you had mentioned Gus' heart condition previously. Doggie prayers and best wishes hoping that he is much better today.

Hey everyone – it's my Dad's Birthday today. Had to ask Mom to post this since Dad would be too shy – but not me. Birthdays are great — usually friends over for dinner (and are they messy – lots of food falls to the floor but I help clean up for Mom.) Then that helpless, poor me, nobody ever gives me anything look gets them every time and before you know it I've done the rounds of the table and I'm full! I've still got the Magoo Dad says (whatever that means.) So Happy Birthday DAD!!! Wookie

Gus is truly in our prayers…mom has had a lot of experience with seizures so Gus has a special place in our hearts.

Yes Mollypop, Canberra Australia, and B, the weather is very dull at the moment, chilly and overcast. Most unseasonal! I like the summer, personally.
So goodnight – you are probably all in bed by now!

LizF!…Lots of time zones here in the US. Are you a Cricket Fan or a Soccer Fan?… snort!…Or an Australian Wine Fan?…heh!

whoa, you're all awake….better check the world clock. Yes, we have cricket matches, and our national team is doing quite badly at the moment (they used to carry all before them, so there is much wringing of hands).
Quite right, Rio, definitely not soccer! Rugby league is more my game. They've just started a baseball league here, actually – this week I think.

I've forgotten what Rugby is. The next season there is spring right? We are heading into winter (in Michigan).

Baseball!…Really? In Australia?…snort!… You have to give me the teams name. NOW there IS a WAY to follow baseball during the Winter!…heh!heh!…I’m giddy with happiness!…Liz! Who in the World will they play against??…gruff!

I was in Michigan once, and Minnesota, in winter, it was SO cold. Beautiful snow!
It's spring, nearly finished now – heading for a hot Christmas (if the rain ever stops…)
Thanks Rio! I would be very happy to sell you something too. We have a local team – i had to google them to find out – Canberra Cavalry. Here's an appropriate one, there's a team called Adelaide Bite!

Thanks to everybody for all your warm birthday wishes. It was a great dinner and the Wookster did just fine too. This is a very special place and I consider myself very lucky to be part of it (and thanks to Wookie as well for letting me use his computer to post this message).

We do get cold winters but I like the change of seasons. Let's see…baseball all year long? Sigh.
I'm glad Wookie's dad had a good birthday.

Liz!… I am at the mercy of Her Almighty….snort!… If she forgets to turn HER computer on for me, I am SOL – (Stover will probably ask what that means later)…heh!… I also have to read HER nagging emails from the Busy Place or my computer privileges are reneged …grump!… It’s rough being the property of someone else…snort!…Course the alternative is way worse I bet…sniffle!

Late!…Good grief!…She is yelling at me from her big ole bed and I have to get off HER computer now…grump!…Liz, nice chatting, come back when you are not creating beautiful artistic visions ….gruff!… I need to log off now. Tomorrow I feel it might be time to check on Rockie and his Hill Billy gang of scoundrels…grump! Double Grump!…sigh
