And my Amazon order for Quacky Baseball has shipped!
Good morning all. One wind chill here but the sun is shining brightly on the very white snow.

There was an earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and the cathedral was destroyed.

Melanie and Mollypop: I received an email from Amazon about the new software updates for the Kindle. There is a link that explains how to download them.
9:45 am on February 22nd, 2011
The software update for the kindle is starting distribution.
Melanie – if your kindle screen is still frozen, you will need to do a reset.
9:50 am on February 22nd, 2011
The kindle will update automatically. Just have wireless turned on.

Yay! Quacky Baseball! Our copy is on the way! We can’t wait to see what the reference to the Plunderers is all about!
Oh…………maybe Quacky blurs his way around the bases!
10:01 am on February 22nd, 2011
Finally!….I have been waiting for this day since last April when he first announced it…wooooo!….My first order shipped yesterday, so hopefully the Quacky order will ship today or tomorrow…snort!
Wolfie!….Do you think the “inside joke” is about the Plunderers?….snort!…I was thinking it would be about Chet for some reason….hmmmm!
10:21 am on February 22nd, 2011
Good morning, everyone. You baseball guys must be very excited. New book today and baseball season coming up.
We had a very icy day yesterday, work closed early, lots of slip/slide accidents. Got a dusting of snow, but it is a pretty day today.
11:03 am on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie: On Facebook are you a friend of Spence in addition to going to Chet Appreciation page?
11:03 am on February 22nd, 2011
QUACKY BASEBALL
“Should we post the cover of Quacky Baseball?” Admin says. “It’s coming out February 22.”
“Why not?” says Spence. “I read it, by the way.”
“Yeah?”
“Love the inside joke you put in there. Maybe we should run a contest about it.”
“Heh-heh, as someone would say.”
11:06 am on February 22nd, 2011
Rio…….
Golly, I had just assumed that the joke was about us.
Pondering……
11:14 am on February 22nd, 2011
Baseball!….Heh!snort!heh!….My friend just emailed me and said one of her friends at work who is also a baseball fan sent her an email that said, “Seeing Ubaldo in his purple pinstripes – gosh he is as pretty as a petunia.”….snorkel!…For some reason we both think this is very funny…heh!heh! chorkel!
11:21 am on February 22nd, 2011
Am I seeing things? It looks as if a black wild boar with a tick is standing behind Quacky!
(Shaking head with bafflement.)
Maybe I need to get my eyes tested?
11:24 am on February 22nd, 2011
Thumby!….Isn’t Thumby Duckling the best looking duck in the whole world?…heh!… He looks like a strong baseball player too!…sniff! …He’s got his eyes on the ball!…snort!
Wolfie!… I guess we won’t know until we actually get the book and read it… grunt!
11:48 am on February 22nd, 2011
We have two coming in two days. Hmmm. So that means THURSDAY! I would go and buy it in person, but no one is going that way down the hills until the weekend. Bummer.
B.Stover and MollyPop: Yes, my Kindle is still frozen. It doesn’t even show up on the computer when I plug it with the cable. The first thing that was suggested was to plug it into the wall, wait awhile and remove it and it would work. Ha. I do not know how to reset it, because we can’t do Whispernet, because we have a Mac.
Will be looking this up today.
B.Stover: Yes, we are also a friend of Spence.
Today is the first day I have felt better since the operation. I had acupuncture today. And even though JG found every sore spot I had and stuck a needle in it, it was good.
11:49 am on February 22nd, 2011
Off to the uninteresting parts of the interweb to be a manager!
11:51 am on February 22nd, 2011
My Quacky Baseball order with Amazon has not shipped yet. They need to get with it. I should have gone with speedy shipping instead of standard shipping. Since it is PA, mom would have agreed to that.
11:56 am on February 22nd, 2011
From last night:
Kaia, We don’t have any cats or possums to ship you, but mom would send you a few skunks free of charge.
12:05 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Glad you’re feeling better Melanie.
I’m laughing at SH and his offer to ship skunks.
12:14 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wolfie,
I took a good look at the picture and that is not a tick. It is a catcher’s glove. On the other hand I am not sure what kind of thing/creature is the catcher. It looks a little like the Michelin man around the legs.
Alice is looking forward to the ‘inside joke’. She thinks the “heh heh heh as someone would say” is a hint.
12:17 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Catcher!…I’m betting that the Catcher behind Thumby is another duckling wearing Catchers gear…..snort!….Their team is called the Webbies….sniff!….In other words, an all duck team….heh!
12:19 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Mr. Husky, depending on just how you want the skunks to be received, you might want to punch holes in the box. Or not.
Ok, listen up everybody! Whoever gets Quacky Baseball first, zip your lips about the inside joke so that we can each enjoy finding it for ourselves. K?
12:27 pm on February 22nd, 2011
RIGHT ON! (Lordy, I haven’t used that in years) No spoilers!!
Thanks, Macy
Who’s the one who wants the beaver? In what shape should the beaver?
We haven’t seen the beaver for a couple of days. We have not done ANYTHING to the beaver. I asked the Pack, and they said they are innocent. Of course, they were licking their chops when they said it.
12:39 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie – did you take “bea-ver and after” pictures of the Pack?
12:52 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wolfie – Gilly and I were discussing the “inside joke” of Quacky. We think that the reference allude to a certain baseball fanatic who is known to snorkle the phrase “heh heh” when his pugly thoughts are posted – he may make an appearance in the book.
On the other hand, Basil and Sage are convinced that it is Alice Johnson who says “heh heh” and that since (they say) kats are the most important thing in the universe, that surely it will be a golden haired kitty kat who has a cameo.
We can’t wait to see – we have a big bet riding on this – who ever wins gets first crack at Mama’s empty yogurt containers for a week!
12:57 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Oh Tup, you’ve been around the Kats too long! shaking head here.
1:07 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Guess!….Here’s my guess as to what the inside joke will be….snort!… It will have to do with The Fans watching the Webbies play ball. There will be dogs and Kats who look like the Plunderers…gruff!… I doubt there will be any humans in the book though, just my guess….sneeze!
1:13 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Rio – we like your idea!
1:14 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Rio: The catcher behind the plate is not on the same team as Quacky, right?
1:16 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Perhaps it’s a dog in catcher’s gear. What does it look like on the right (our right) side of Quacky?
1:22 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Catcher!…That is correct, the Catcher would be on the opposing team….snort! …I see where you are going with this. The other team might be a different type of animal altogether….grunt!….I guess I was assuming an all duck little league….sneeze!
1:33 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Oh dear
Mama is having a bad day. First she went to her email box and it was stuffed full of fanatical ravings about a certain Political Figure – not factual but fanatical ravings, mind you. And 27 of them??? Delete delete delete…..
Next all her clay sculpture pieces are cracking during the drying process – she isn’t sure if the weather is to blame or if there is a problem with her new batch of clay.
And then this afternoon – she has to go work for the Crazy Lady.
Mama is sayng some very bad words right now – she NEVER uses those words to us….well, sometimes she says some of them to Sage, but she also says that he is a miscreant…whatever that is. We think he is just a brat.
1:40 pm on February 22nd, 2011
I have noticed that when T & G’s mom has a bad day and says some very bad words, that storm clouds tend to form over her head and lighting bolts can be seen.
I’m keeping my head down.
1:42 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie – Mom doesn’t have the snazzy new kindle like all the rest of you, but this may work to reset it. Hold the off slider For 15 seconds. Or Alt-shift-r for a soft reset. Or stick the end of a paper clip in the little reset hole. Or read the instruction manual on the mac.
1:44 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Latest on Kindle: Though I thought I had charged the Kindle for two hours yesterday, the plug behind the sofa (and let me tell you that is difficult to move with a knee problem) was connected.
Jeez. Well the nice people at Amazon Kindle support are helping me. We are now charging the Kindle correctly. And in an hour they will call back, make sure it’s working and then tell me how to get the new software.
Onward and upward!
1:45 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Thanks MollyPop, the nice lady had me try that, but there is no little reset hole anymore and the instruction manual was not a help. The nice lady who lives in the phone is working on it. Will give info she says to anyone, but I hope this does not happen to anyone else.
1:48 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie – dum da da dah! dum, dum da da dah! dum….
The Valkyries are riding!
2:11 pm on February 22nd, 2011
It seems to me that this is the first time I’ve heard about clay sculpture pieces and T&G….very interesting. Could we have pictures at some point?
2:14 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Uh-Oh T& G and the Herbs. Sounds dangerous where you are. please be careful.
2:21 pm on February 22nd, 2011
ummmm…Bee, remember when we mentioned that Mama is somewhat of a luddite? Taking pictures and loading them on her computer is not something she does a lot..she needs to, but it hasn’t happened a lot. She will be taking pics soon for jurying into an art show she is applying for, so maybe then she can post some.
Meanwhile, the wonderful and brilliant Melanie just might possibly be able to post a pic of one of her pieces…..
2:23 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Maybe the catcher on the other team is a wild Boar? Or an anteater? I’m just saying…..
I do agree, though, that the brown tick may actually be a catchers mitt.
On the other hand, Quacky is adorable.
2:26 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Hmmm I was just going to ask if I could maybe post a picture of a certain clay piece.
In ten minutes I have to talk to the lady in the phone and after that, I will go upstairs and take a pic and post.
The catcher: If both of the things on the left are with catcher’s leggings then on the right it looks like some kind of tail???
2:27 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Time to go see the Crazy Lady – talk to you all later
3:13 pm on February 22nd, 2011
I can see the glove on the left. A tail or an anteater?
3:14 pm on February 22nd, 2011
There is also something on the right between the head and tail of Quacky.
3:23 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Kindle is working and update complete! YEA!
3:33 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Okay, let’s see who fanatic fans we can be!
This is a more detailed close up of the section we are looking at.

I definitely see a catcher’s mitt, but I have NO idea what kind of animal the catcher is. If the object to the right is a tail, it is definitely not a pug’s tail! snicker!
3:52 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Hmmmm.
After seeing Melanie’s enlargement the two black segmented things under the bat could be leg guards, but they are at an angle that suggests there are two more legs obscured behind the batter. The black under the batter’s tail appears to be a tail.
There may also be an umpire back there out of sight.
3:54 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Hmmmmm……well, it doesn’t look like a wld boar either. Maybe some sort og beetle?
3:55 pm on February 22nd, 2011
The catcher’s glove is being held by what?
3:58 pm on February 22nd, 2011
*****OG beetle.
Rare beetle that enjoys playing baseball?
I keep thinking that we are missing something here…..
4:27 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wölfie: We are missing the book!
T&G’s mom is an artist. This is one of her clay pieces. She does a lot of other things and she has just started the clay. Please ignore the out of focus. I tried to find light in my room, but it was fading fast.
I’m going out to dinner!
4:35 pm on February 22nd, 2011
All we can see on the right is Quacky’s tail and shoulder. You guys are seeing a lot more than we are in that picture.
T & G, Barb works part time for a Crazy Lady, too. What does your CL do? Barb’s is a Realtor.
4:35 pm on February 22nd, 2011
T&G: That is so neat. Now I want to try to analyze the “symbols” on it.
4:52 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie, Have you started Hotel? If so, what do you think so far?
Barb is still reading Memory Keeper’s Daughter. Good, but a little tedious in its detail.

I have some information that I need to pass on to everyone on the blog. My mom and dad took me to the vet about five weeks ago, because I had some blood in my urine. I thought I was feeling fine, but the vet was concerned and did a bunch of tests. While the blood in my urine went away very quickly after the vet gave me some pills, when the tests were all completed, we found out that I have something called lymphoma. It turns out this is a very common thing to happen in mature goldens, and at 9 and 1/2 years old, I fit that profile very well. This is not a good thing to have, but my mom, dad and me met with an oncologist a week ago on Monday who is a very nice lady (I like her a lot, and she did the surgery on me several years ago to remove the mast cell tumor I had then). She thinks that I am a very good candidate for something called chemotherapy and, while it will not cure the lymphoma, it should put it in remission and hopefully extend the time that I can spend in my forever home with my mom and dad and grandpa and with all my friends here on the blog. Fortunately, all the bad side effects that happen to humans when they get chemotherapy do not normally occur in dogs, so hopefully there will not be any bad side effects for me. I will receive a total of 16 treatments spread over a 19 week period (4 weeks on, one week off, repeated for a total of four times). I actually received my first treatment last Monday and my second treatment yesterday, so it has begun and so far I feel just fine. I know my mom and dad love me very much and are very worried and sad, but I am an optimist at heart and am going to do my best to fight this lymphoma thing the best that I can, and will keep you posted on how things go. Your friend Wookie

Wookie, You will be in our thoughts and prayers, Big Guy, and we hope you sail through the treatments with few problems. Kisses and tail wags, Maggie

Your mom and dad love you very much, Wookie, and we love you very much. I know your folks will do everything they can to help you beat this thing, and I know that you have what it takes to win this battle. We are with you all the way and you are in our prayers. Mom knows how your folks feel…special hugs and prayers go out to them.
Your friends,
Siber-H and Mom

Wilkie, I am so sad to hear of your plight. You are wonderful and bad things like cancer should not happen to Good Dogs.
This explains why you have been so quiet on the blog lately.
I am sending lots of love.
5:31 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wooks you may need to change your name because iPad does not approve. It likes Wilkie much better. Sorry.
5:31 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wookie: Please get better. I am thinking of you and sending you and your family good thoughts of love and strength.
5:34 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Sniff.
I think I need a hankie.
5:35 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wookie!… Say it isn’t so!….sob!sob!sob!
5:43 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wolfie, Pass your hankie over to Barb, she is looking pretty teary right now.
5:55 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Dear Wookie: Like your family I am very sad but I appreciate your optimism and hope only for happiness for you. You are approaching this new road with all the dignity and class that makes us all love and respect you as the best of the blog. Kleenex needed.
5:56 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wookie!…Have you read this article? It actually mentions the word ”Cured”…snort!… (sob!sob!sob!)

That is a good positive article Rio.

Siber-H, my Mom says I have to pass on the skunk offer. Dunno why. Sounds great! I am 8 months old and haven’t yet met a skunk…. possums, squirrels, bugs, lots of dogs, a strange Kat that wouldn’t run and play chase (batted me on the nose. I was surprised and didn’t mean to yelp and run. I am taking a lot of ribbing from the other two pei that live with us). Skunk sounds good 🙁

Wookie, there is a shar-pei that we know who has the same thing. She has been through treatments and even though it was rough–She had tummy aches and didn’t want to eat or problems with the “other end” but there were pills for that and she gets lots of home cooked yummy food that we guys only dream of–she is doing well and has finished all the treatments. Keep your courage up!
7:30 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Kaia, My mom says your mom is wise to pass up the skunk offer. Skunks tend to get humans upset, but us dogs, not so much. I don’t know why humans make such big deal out of dogs getting skunked.
7:35 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Melanie, Thanks for posting the clay piece for T & G’s Mom. It is very beautiful. What do the symbols mean?
7:44 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Clay!… My friend says she used to like to play with clay when she was a very little girl…heh!…But somehow this looks a lot different than anything she ever produced with clay during her whole childhood, or so she says…snort!
7:55 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wookie: Mom was at work when she read your post. She got all teary eyed at the desk, so she had to go to the back. You and your family are in our thoughts. If dogs don’t get the same side effects as humans, does that mean you’ll get to keep all your beautiful golden fur? I hope so!
8:17 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Tears!…. I have wiped away my tears and now it is time to get down to the business of encouraging our most beloved friend….snort!….Agent ‘00’Wookie is a strong willed, smart, energetic and fun loving guy. He will do what is necessary to stay healthy like eat right, work-out and go through his treatments with courage, determination and humor….snorkel!…Because this is what he is. He is strong, determined and amazing. We all love him for his grand debonair qualities. These excellent qualities will bring him through this storm. This unexpected storm which he faces….sniff!

Oh my Wookie,
I know it was hard for you to tell the blog your news. I am glad you did and that we will be able to share it with you and your Mom and Dad. There are some things you shouldn’t have to go through alone. I am getting out my yellow wristband in your honor. Love, hugs and prayers to you and your family. Keep us in the loop. We all care. You are one special fellow.
Abbie, (and Alice and Staff)

Lots of encouragement and support for our Wookie. We all love you lots.

A friend of ours Newfoundland named Pinkie (she had another very long name but this was her call name) at the age of 8 was diagnosed with lymphoma. She went through the same thing you are going through. She is at the Rainbow Bridge now, but she lived to be 14 years old. That is very old for a Newfoundland.
Her owner misses her, and kept two of her puppies, more of her grandpups and great grandpups.
You are a grand dog Wöökie!
Now where is Patsy so I can hug her?
9:22 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Oh, Wookie, my debonair friend, I know you will go through your treatment with your usual grace. Tissues here, but then no more tears, just loving positive thoughts.

Sheesh.

I just want to thank everyone for all your words of encouragement, prayers, good wishes and love. I cannot begin to tell you how much that has meant to me and my mom and dad. Knowing that I have the support of all of you makes what I am going through so much easier to bear. Rio, thank you for the article, we will definitely look into that, and thank Rockie for his kind words as well. Kirby, you can rest assured that I will not lose any of my golden fur as a result of the chemo; I do however shed from time to time and that will continue. (My mom says our home is decorated in golden retriever fur compatible colors.). As regards hankies, my mom and dad had to break out matching hankies of their own after reading all your comments. Thanks again, so very much. Your friend, Wookie
10:23 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Dear Wookie -Mama just got home and is catching up on the blog. She wants to let you know that she has seen some amazing things happen with the power of prayer from those who love you. A year and a half ago her very best friend in the world got a diagnosis of cancer. After Mama stopped crying, she started contacting people to pray for her friend, and she and Daddy did lots and lots of prayers too. And later on, her friend got word that the cancer that had been found in one test could no longer be found.
All of us here are sending up prayers for our beloved Golden One, our Secret Agent and Most Dignified Diplomat. We know that your strong heart and the love of your mom and dad will see you through this trial, and the Plunderers will be here day and night with good thoughts and support.
Tell your mom that boiled chicken and plain boiled rice are really good for doggies with difficulties. And yogurt and cheese and ice cream and scambled eggs and….oh, sorry, we get a little carried away.
You just keep letting us all know how you are doing, and pretty soon all those treatments will be behind you to be swept away by your beautiful swishing, wagging golden tail!
Love to all of you from Tupper, Gilly, Basil and Sage and Mama and Daddy too!
10:25 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Wookie: love and prayers to you and your family. Please keep us posted often so we can send positive energy your way. Take care! Maybe you will be getting lots of treats to keep your appetite up. :-}
My car has been dug out and in another 5 minutes I can head home. Regular school day on Wednesday. Tomorrow morning will come all too soon.
11:07 pm on February 22nd, 2011
Charris!… I am hoping you made it home safe and sound with your car this time….snort!…What an unbelievably bad winter you have had so far….sniff!… We here hate winter with a passion and cannot even imagine what you have to go through each and every day…grunt!…Please get some sleep and have a good day tomorrow in school with all the rug-rats…heh!

Good night all. Another hard day on the blog. However I am told that my local bookstore will get Quacky Baseball in for me “unless there is a weather disruption of the shipping” on Friday.
Remember, no telling of the inside joke (in Quacky Baseball) on the blog. We are keeping it secret so we can all discover it ourselves.
For Wookie…

As of this evening, we have a new Mayor Elect in Chicago. Rahm Emanuel has won a victory, and there will be no run-off election. After approx. 40 years of Daley rule, this is going to be quite a change. Rahm of course, was Chief of Staff for our POTUS and is now back in Chicago. We had a variety of canidates – men, women, white, black and hispanic, but Emanuel received the winning votes from all sectors. Should be an interesting year ahead.
We are going to bed. Sweet dreams to all, especially Wookie.

A Day!….A day that started out one way and ended in another. Joy and best wishes for our Author, then news of a disease that dares to take one of our strongest….snuff!…A day of pulling together for all different reasons…sniffle!… This will be a very special year for all of us. It will be a dozy and it will be a roller coaster ride. It will make us all stronger if we stick together.…gruffle!

Oh, Wookie!! We’re so sorry you and your Mom & Dad are having to face this challenge. We’re certain that the treatments will help you handle this, and keep you with your folks and with us for a good long time. Have you told Audrey yet? She won’t let you quit “fighting the good fight”! We can’t say anything any better than all the others have said, but know that we love you and your family and will be here for you.
