Good morning. Mom says we have the same sort of priorities today. Weed Garden! Plant grass! Weed peonies! Weed bank!
Oh, and then there is the usual cleaning of stalls.
And poor Pop is still under that there quilt.
But then: Art for Arf’s Sake Gala! Which is for us “arfs” but for some reason, we can’t go.
8:32 am on May 4th, 2013
Good morning Oleys and everyone. Hope Pop feels better and is able to enjoy the weekend.
Everyone around Barb is sick, so we are hoping she doesn’t get their germs.
Barb is going to check out the Farmer’s Market opening day. Had a good time last night at dinner. Had the fish tacos which were yummy.
Have to go back now and read the posts from last night.
8:48 am on May 4th, 2013
OH NO! Jaqueline must have been here too and she has a thing for shearing white dogs!

8:50 am on May 4th, 2013
Morning all!
Didn’t sleep much at all last night. Can’t blame the weather.
Today I will try to slow down. We’ve seen that has turned out before. Sigh
8:53 am on May 4th, 2013
For Dog’s sake. That can’t be Gramp’s dog, Callie. She looks like a pup!
8:54 am on May 4th, 2013
Good morning Callie. My you do have short hair. At least you have years.
8:55 am on May 4th, 2013
EARS!
9:03 am on May 4th, 2013
Gooood morning everyone! No garden work for mom here…Raining kats and more kats. Too many!
Sammie and Callie, your cuts look nice, doglike. I, on the other paw look like a Chinese crested pot-bellied pig. -Pookey:(
9:08 am on May 4th, 2013
Hmmmmm, for some reason, I can’t imagine Admin mowing the lawn.
9:10 am on May 4th, 2013
Callie looks lovely.
Woolsie, can you imagine any of us Howlers mowing our grass?
10:42 am on May 4th, 2013
Good (cold, rainy) morning.
Spence: Get to it before the weather changes. I can totally see you behind one of those push mowers.
Wolfie: Macy wants to know if you are near the fires? Me too, are you?
Melanie: I hope all your dreams last night come true. And that you get some rest and relaxation time today.
I’m starting to like that smooth cut on white dogs. Nice of Sammie to point out Callie’s
ageears.Tyb: I’ve heard of several canine officers being left in cars overnight with horrible results. Something needs to change.
11:11 am on May 4th, 2013
Lawn!….I bet he makes Spencer mow…heh!heh!
11:19 am on May 4th, 2013
Spence is into spring.
I went to farmer’s market and bought some lovely herbs. The fruit trees are in blossom, the leaves are coming out on all the trees, everything is beautifully green, the swans are on the lake and geese are in the parkway. And I heard a red-winged blackbird. Yep, spring is here!
Good morning all.
12:01 pm on May 4th, 2013
Bee, we have a crowd of red wings at the feeder. Love sitting and watching all the different varieties of birds. Had a Chipping Sparrow (summer only) and a White Crested Sparrow (migratory only) this week.
Barb is filling the four barrels part way with potting soil and then moving them one at a time to the back yard. Too heavy to carry, so using the little yellow wagon.
I wonder if Spence does any veggie gardening. Maybe Chet knows.
How is The Storyteller this morning?
12:13 pm on May 4th, 2013
Spence, If you lived in the Southwest, you wouldn’t have to mow your lawn. Most of us here do not have lawns.
Macy and Dawson, Wolfie does not, I repeat, does not, live near the fires in California. He lives way north of where they are burning.
12:21 pm on May 4th, 2013
We couldn’t read the link to the Story About the K-9 Officer last night, TYB, but it’s just as well. The mere thought of one of the nation within being left in a car overnight, let alone of my kind, Makes Me Sick. His human(?) partner should be brought up on charges.
The Kentucky Derby is today. Rosie Naravnik riding Mylute is a 15-1 Long Shot.
Some Good Weather News here…a Spectacular Day…Warm & Sunny.
Have a Good One Everyone.
12:26 pm on May 4th, 2013
Thank you, Siber for the fire location info. We never answered Macy’s (the abandoned) question because it was addressed to Wolfie.
The fire is on the coast north of Los Angeles.
Time for a nap in the sunshine.
1:05 pm on May 4th, 2013
Barb: Red-winged blackbirds have never come to my feeder. I don’t know why. I’ve only seen them at a distance in the parkway or while I’m driving along the freeway with trees on either side. I love their call. Chipping sparrows and tree sparrows are back in my garden and yesterday I saw a white-crowned sparrow who I think was on his way north. House finches are back but I haven’t seen an American goldfinch yet.
2:13 pm on May 4th, 2013
We are about 300 miles from the fires. They are very scary. One year they came so close that Chad got up on the roof and started hosing it down.
Mom is replacing broken and chipped tiles in the kitchen today.
2:16 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sleep was beyond me yesterday. Oh well, tonight is another night.
It is another beautiful day thanks to the high over Greenland. Had to take the net off the asparagus bed, the poor asparagus were trying to escape. I’m also having to slap Zoë’s hands because she wants to eat them NOW. Not until next year.
I emptied the old salad gutter into the squash bed. Put down some hay in the gutter. Tomorrow I will add compost and move the strawberries that managed to make it despite the rodents of lesser size.
I put compost tea in the beds with no plants in them. Don’t want to burn the roots. Tomorrow I will irrigate the soil.
Whew, I love Spring. Luckily, Deb (Jesse’s Mom) who is helping us out is an avid gardener.
Birds: Blue Jays, Mourning Doves, Red Winged Blackbirds, Cardinals and more.
The King Fishers are back! I can hear them, but have not seen them.
Here is a picture of just some of the Blue Jays that have been visiting.

2:21 pm on May 4th, 2013
Wolfie: Good to know we Don’t Have to Worry about Youse.
Just Remembered…..
It’s Star Wars Day. May the Fourth Be With You!
Callie: You do Look Like a Puppy. You do!
Sammie: Don’t let the pug make fun of you! It is a Cool Summer Do. (that is You, isn’t it? heh, heh. just kidding)
2:23 pm on May 4th, 2013
Someone here is a day late and a dollar short. snort.
2:42 pm on May 4th, 2013
Melanie, why do you want to irritate soil on Cinco de Mayo? Is it a new way of celebrating my b-day that no one has told me of? -Pookey
2:49 pm on May 4th, 2013
Pookey: I’m going to have Mexican food tomorrow in honor of your birthday. I hope you are having a good hair day.
3:01 pm on May 4th, 2013
Mom’s doing chicken enchiladas just for me, but I’ll share. I’m still having a no hair day 🙁 Mom got a FOC foto, but hasn’t had luck with ones for blog yet (he,he, the curse is working). Tanks for celebration with me!
3:04 pm on May 4th, 2013
Pookey! Happy Birthday a day early, but still a dollar short. Do we get to see a picture of the great Pookster?
Oh. By the way, it is very important to irritate the soil. Just ask Siber-H.
Or ask Rose, the four legged not the two legged. She has quite a trench going in one of the play yards.
3:11 pm on May 4th, 2013
Melanie, the only pic of Pook at the moment is the blonde in the FOC pic. I have directions to put pic on, but so far, no go. I think the girls have put a curse on me. I’m trying to get one of Pookster in her b-day suit!
3:24 pm on May 4th, 2013
A gorgeous spring day here in Chevy Chase. The Avon Walk for Cancer is actually going through our neighborhood this year. Debbie did it a few years back with another friend (who was a breast cancer survivor). Debbie took the preparations very seriously with a lot of training walks to build up endurance, and on every single one she was accompanied by her faithful companion, Wookie.
The farm markets this morning had some incredible strawberries in, and we got a bunch. I think some strawberry preserves will be in our future before the weekend is out. Some great asparagus too (although I don’t think Debbie has a recipe for asparagus preserves).
3:30 pm on May 4th, 2013
Spring?…sniff!sniff!…Maybe. Maybe it is warm enough and the wind has died down so that my friend says she is going to take her project and work out on the pation….snort!…She tried to do this before and a gust of wind came out of nowhere and blew all her paper hither and thither…heh!heh!
3:39 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sage doing law mower duty at our house. He loves to be in the backyard, and Gramp leaves this one patch of grass long for him. If course HE has to be on a leash. Maybe there is even more of a Siber/Kat connection than we knew.

3:45 pm on May 4th, 2013
Strawberries won’t be out here until June. I love strawberry jam.
Asparagus is delish steamed and then with butter melted on top. Preserves….I think not.
4:13 pm on May 4th, 2013
T&G: Why does Gramps have to be on a leash?
4:27 pm on May 4th, 2013
I was wondering the same thing. Poor gramps. Is the Storyteller still doing well?
4:31 pm on May 4th, 2013
I’m laughing over pronoun confusion (a Banned Error!). Isn’t it Sage who has to be on a leash?
I’m going to watch the latest episode of Elementary on On Demand.
4:44 pm on May 4th, 2013
Oh pook! You know what we mean.
(Of course when Mama thought about putting Gramp on a leash…..well, lets just say that after the shower fiasco, the idea isn’t in unappealing.
5:03 pm on May 4th, 2013
Melanie, If your tea is made from compost and not fresh manure, it won’t burn anything. As far as we know, only fresh stuff is hot. Barb learned that the hard way when she first started gardening about 40 years ago, and burned everything in her garden with too-fresh chicken poop!
Went to the farmer’s market, but was a little disappointed with plants we saw. Think we may go buy some from Gary Gauger in Richmond, who runs a certified organic farm and sells to a few restaurants. If you want to read an interesting story Google him. He was Barb’s client for years when she was in insurance. Gary is a gentle soul – sort of a bearded what’s happenin sort of guy. He was arrested 20 years ago for the brutal double homicide of his parents and was on death row for several years. Then in a random arrest a member of a motorcycle gang admitted that his gang had killed them. Gary’s sentence was commuted by then Gov. Ryan. He mostly stays out of the spotlight, but in the early years of his release he traveled ang gave speeches against the death penalty. If you met him you could never imagine him killing anything, even an insect.
5:24 pm on May 4th, 2013
Gramps on a leash . .Snicker. YSAS wore Osh Gosh overalls until he was five. I could grab his straps and lift him right up before he took off.
Pookey, will check out your photo after supper.
Maggie, whoa. Have to read that again after dinner.
PIZZA
5:36 pm on May 4th, 2013
What kind of bird is the black bird in Melanie’s photo? I saw one just like it in my yard today.
5:39 pm on May 4th, 2013
Pizza! Is it too early to think about Din-Din? I say no, it is not.
5:41 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sorry for the Interuption, Siber-H. I would like to know the answer to your question as well.
5:42 pm on May 4th, 2013
Barb and Maggie, Would you tell me where you got your corners for the raised beds or didn’t you buy commercial corner supports?
We are thinking about making a few raised beds in our garden.
5:53 pm on May 4th, 2013
Kentucky!…Derby! We just came in in time to watch the race…snort!…I do not like the look of that track. It is very muddy. They always have injuries when it is muddy…wheeze!
5:53 pm on May 4th, 2013
Elementary was a cliff-hanger. Hate cliff-hangers. I don’t think I’ve seen J.J. Abrahams since Amadeus.
5:58 pm on May 4th, 2013
Staff, maybe we can post a picture tomorrow if it is sunny and Barb gets some ambition. We constructed ours with a 2×12 on the bottom and a 2x 10 on top. Then used 2 x 4s with a point cut on one end. These were pounded into each corner on the inside and then another one was placed on the outside half way (6 feet). The end board were cut at 5′ and the side boards at 12′. The 5 footer was placed on the inside, and 3 screws were drilled into each end, then screwed into the 2×4 uprights for additional support. We used treated lumber because it holds up longer. We researched it and it is evidently safe to use but for additional protections against the chemicals in the wood we put a sheet of black plastic on the inside as a liner. The second bed only has the bottom 2 x 12 because we ran out of dirt, but that is very adequate for growing veggies. Probably more than you wanted to know!
5:58 pm on May 4th, 2013
Jockykins!….Those Jockys sound like Munchkins to me when they talk…heh!heh!…I watch this every year just for the Munchkin fix…snorkel!
6:00 pm on May 4th, 2013
Barb!…My friend says she wants to come live with you after she tells the boney-fingered one to go to hell this coming week…snort!…She thinks she wants to learn how to garden from a professional…heh!…The deal is, I get to come and live with you too. Oh, and Beau….grunt!
6:00 pm on May 4th, 2013
I am rooting for Rosie. Our Rosie loves to run. I know that Rosie is the jockey not the horse.
I am enjoying the hats.
6:02 pm on May 4th, 2013
SiberH: I think the black bird in the photo is a grackle.
6:11 pm on May 4th, 2013
Bird!…That black bird looks like a felon…sniff!
6:16 pm on May 4th, 2013

Horse!….I wonder which horse Beau bet on….sniff!…He won’t tell me…grunt!
6:24 pm on May 4th, 2013
Grackle gets our vote too. They are a very shiny black with a greenish black sheen on the head.
Rio, We vote yes to you moving here. I think it would be fun and Barb thinks your friend’s case noodles and stuffed cabbage would be a hit.
6:27 pm on May 4th, 2013
Go Mylute!!!
6:28 pm on May 4th, 2013
Barb!…Beau and I will start packing just as soon as he picks up his winnings from the big race today!…snort!snort!….I’m twirling! I’m spinning!. ..I’m spinning and twirling!….Woooooo!
6:29 pm on May 4th, 2013

Bear! …Isn’t there a song about your horse?…sniff!
Flys in the buttermilk, Shoo, fly, shoo
There’s a little red wagon, Paint it blue
Lost my partner, What’ll I do?

Can’t get a red bird, Jay bird’ll do
Cat’s in the cream jar, Ooh, ooh, ooh
Off to Texas, Two by two
Skip, skip, skip to Mylute
Skip, skip, skip to Mylute
Skip, skip, skip to Mylute
6:36 pm on May 4th, 2013
What do they call the horses that were with the race horses? They were beautiful in their ribbons and flowers
6:36 pm on May 4th, 2013
ORB!…wins it!…chuffle!
6:37 pm on May 4th, 2013
Orb was impressive. He really did like the middle of the pack.
6:39 pm on May 4th, 2013
Where did Rosie end up?
6:41 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sharon. Please tell Pookey that is difficult to picture her without her fluffy tail.
6:43 pm on May 4th, 2013
Orb won it, no horses went down in the mud thank dog. All the horses look mud brown.
Off the Josh’s for Jack’s 4th b-day dinner. Barb had a choice of Chucky Cheese pizza for lunch or steak on the grill tonight. What a choice! Hope she brings me a doggy bag!
Love that song, Rio, but isn’t it Skip to my Lou? Or did Barb sing it wrong as a kid?
6:47 pm on May 4th, 2013
Stover, Thank you.
6:49 pm on May 4th, 2013
Oh we get it, Myluth is a horse. Duh!
6:50 pm on May 4th, 2013
Wow, as impressive as those wonderful horses are, it does not inspire me to race The Pack.
Let’s see, they would have to be lead by a treat trail to the start line. At that time, Mac would stretch out in front of everyone. Mattie would then clean his ears. Ros would lick the starter, Frank would just sit on someone. Gracie and Rose would be ready to race.
After the starter pistol, Rose would go looking for something to herd to the finish line. Gracie would head to the closest pond and swim.
Yup, we are not ready for the big time yet.
6:51 pm on May 4th, 2013
Beau!….grunt!….Well, he is sitting in the corner sob!sob!sobbing!….sniff!….Seems he picked Black Onyx to winnit. I should have guessed….heh! …All his toys are gone!gone!gone!….chorkel!
6:53 pm on May 4th, 2013
Barb!…Needless to say, our moving plans are on hold for a bit…grump!…Black Onyx indeed!
6:55 pm on May 4th, 2013
Agree bird is probably grackle but doesn’t have the golden eye.
Melanie, Sharon is attempting to get a nekkid foto of Pook here. Stay tuned.
7:09 pm on May 4th, 2013
7:10 pm on May 4th, 2013
Don’t ask mom how, but she did it and a durty, nekkid Pookey is there in her b-day suit. Whoo hoo!
7:11 pm on May 4th, 2013
Melanie – the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a bunch of state songs:
•State Song: “All Hail to Massachusetts”, by Arthur J. Marsh
•State Folk Song: “Massachusetts”, by Arlo Guthrie
•State Ceremonial March: “The Road to Boston”, composer unknown
•State Patriotic Song: “Massachusetts (Because of You Our Land is Free)”, by Bernard Davidson
•State Glee Club Song: “The Great State of Massachusetts”, words by George A. Wells and music by J. Earl Bley
•State Polka: “Say Hello to Someone in Massachusetts”, by Lenny Gomulka
•State Ode: “Ode to the Commonwealth”, by Joseph Falzone
The horses that lead the race horses in are called “Lead Ponies” no matter how big they are. The rides and horses that are along the race track at spaced furlongs wear full formal hunt clothes and tack, and are known as “outriders”.
And just for the record, Mama’s pick actually won. She picks by the names she likes the best.
7:13 pm on May 4th, 2013
Golinka!…Beau wants to know how much money you won and if he can borrow some….snort!
7:20 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sharon, According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology ” Eye color ranges from dull brown along the western Gulf Coast to bright yellow along the Atlantic Coast.”
good luck on that photo.
7:25 pm on May 4th, 2013
Umm, The Grackle looks like the Purple Grackle. Known here on the Atlantic coast. Has a purple sheen to the chest and sides.
Pookey! You look like a lion. Cool . .
The littlest Newf is getting big. snicker
A state Polka???? I’m NOT dancing to it.
7:29 pm on May 4th, 2013
Mom is still learning her eastern birds. Only been here a decade (is that more than 2?). Lots more color but variety seems smaller, maybe? She is always saying, “Look at the….”
7:35 pm on May 4th, 2013
HOH: We are very impressed. Your mom did it! Wooo!
Beau: Black Onyx was a good name. I liked it too.
Time to catch up on Elementary and see what B is talking about.
7:38 pm on May 4th, 2013
Rio – Mama won a million dollars. Now, she just has to get the Storyteller to pay up.
Melanie – come on – No Polka? Then how ’bout dancing to the UNofficial state song:

8:23 pm on May 4th, 2013
Saw AJ & Rebecca today–always a pleasure. I do hope someday we do get to have a Plunderer reunion so everyone can meet them. Good things are happening and we have helped!
Picking a winner based on name? That is something I would do (very unscientific)
Still winter, still snowing. Nursing my dog Lady who is not well. Vet visit yesterday and another coming up on Monday.
8:58 pm on May 4th, 2013
CHobbit!…You are so lucky to get to see the Giants!…Wow!…Is AJ still growing?
Lady!…On a sadder note, I sure hope Lady will be okay. I will be saying some mighty pug-prayers for her and for you tonight and tomorrow and well, you know…sniffle!
9:00 pm on May 4th, 2013
Rio: The Giant and Rebecca were both taller than I remembered but maybe they did grow? Hmmmm…or I might be shrinking.
Vet said to try chicken broth in water for Lady so I am off to the store.
9:13 pm on May 4th, 2013
CHobbit!…Maybe a real chicken would be better…sniff!
9:15 pm on May 4th, 2013

HOH: You did it! Pookie does look like a lion. Darah the Bear and who’s the other one?
Turtleman and “E” came over for cards today and I have never heard such language from that little woman. She does not like to lose and I won every hand.
Dad is back to listening to The Thunderbolt Kid and laughing loudly. I may have to re-read that book.
9:59 pm on May 4th, 2013
Dawson!…My friend really misses playing cards with her family…sniffle!…So much fun. Way too much laughter and silliness. Those were the days…wuffle!

10:50 pm on May 4th, 2013
Howdy everybody! Finally home from the Great Texas Roadtrip. I must apologize for Macy. She was getting a little peevish from us being gone so long.
Everywhere we went it seems like there was a pug. Gift shop pug – Puggy Sue. Beach two pugs, Pugsley and Bitsy. San Antonio Riverwalk – Winston Churchill Pug (Winnie to his friends) Apparently Siber Huskies, Newfies, Corgis, Min-Pins, etc don’t travel well.
10:52 pm on May 4th, 2013
Pugs!…Have Pug Will Travel!…snort!…That doesn’t work with Beau, he thinks he wants to go for a car ride, but once he is in the car riding, he doesn’t want to be there anymore…wheeze!…He is such a pain in the @ss…sniff!
11:02 pm on May 4th, 2013
Miss Macy, Glad your folks are home, and we hope they had a nice time on their trip.
Thoughts and prayers going out for Lady. Get better, girl.
I declare the Rockies the winners of this game even if the game isn’t over with yet. I believe I can safely go to sleep now and not worry about the game.

Beau: my dog Sadie leaps and whines the whole way when she is in the car. Let’s just say that I am not looking forward to the 6-hour drive to Anchorage in a couple of weeks. I do have a couple of “sleepy time” pills from the vet so I think I will give her one.
11:47 pm on May 4th, 2013
Sleepy!…Time?…snort!….Does that have the same effect as drinking a bowl of beer really fast?…sniff!
2:20 pm on July 2nd, 2013
Howdy would you mind letting me know which hosting company you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in
3 completely different internet browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot
quicker then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider at a reasonable price?
Thank you, I appreciate it!
