Good Morning! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Barb. Maggie, give her lots and lots of kisses.
8:22 am on September 12th, 2012
Yawn.
We read deep into the night.
Good dog, Chet.
Great book, Spence. AFOC is our favorite so far.
Happy Birthday Barb!!!
Good morning all.
8:45 am on September 12th, 2012
Good morning, I slept!!! Until Dan’s bell went off. Whew . .
Patsy was whining and barking and I was struggling with the bed covers and fell out of the bed. Got my robe and by the time I made it downstairs, Zoë was coming back in. He was okay. Not sure about me.
Since The Pack had an early start they’ve been cooking up something in the kitchen. It has to do with chickens. Doesn’t smell like chicken so I guess I better get up a second time and see what’s going on.
8:45 am on September 12th, 2012
Thank you for the birthday wishes, and thank you to youse guys that posted on FB too.
Going to have a quiet day till I pick up Lyla and Jack at 3:00. Then going to wait for Josh and Jessica, then out for a birthday dinner. Then Friday will meet Kelly and Chad and the kids for another dinner, then Shannon will come out this weekend. Seems there was not a common day where everyone could meet, so I will be having multiple celebrations. Nothing wrong with that!

Greetings OHs and BlueCat!
Many happy returns of the day Barb!!!
Rio! Aren’t you lookin’ goooood in your pictures! You have the physique of a young Schwarzenegger…broad, muscular chest, and slim through the waist. Those brutal walks have you in tip top shape, my pug luv.
Oh, and I also like the picture of you and the Chinese student. You looked very mellow in that picture.
Good day to all!
9:12 am on September 12th, 2012
Belle Starr, I saw you earlier this morning up top, when you were still a puppy.
9:21 am on September 12th, 2012
Morning Rose!
Morning All!
I finally got downstairs and The Pack came in VERY proud of themselves. They did make Barb a chicken for her Birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARB!

Have a good convention Spence.
Happy birthday Barb. I’m laughing at Melanie’s picture.
I’m still reading slowly.
Good morning all.
10:03 am on September 12th, 2012
Morning everyone.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARB!!!! How nice to celebrate in your new home.
Great cake from the Pack! Who knew that 36 giant Newfie paws could do something so delicate.
Plans for our day? Go for a walk on the beach. Sit in the sun on the beach. Go for another walk on the beach. Go home and nap on the screen porch. After dinner, go for a stroll on the beach.
Yup, it’s tough being a Corgi. tee hee.
10:05 am on September 12th, 2012
Top of the morning to youse all and happy birthday to Barb.
Good to have Rose back in the fold, although I do think we all need to work on our Morse Code skills a bit more, just in case.
We’ve just read two chapters so far; mom and dad are in the savor/stretch mode, so we may be lagging behind some of the rest of you. But so far, it is grrrreat!
Good visit with the v-e-t yesterday and can report, all things considered, I’m holding my own. The cooler weather we have having has also made me feel a lot better.
Got to go and get ready, got quilt ladies arriving later this afternoon and I certainly can’t let them down.

Pictures from the Royals:
Another lovely morning. We think the butterflies are about to leave on their migration. Every one that we saw this morning was resting, wings folded. This one agreed to sit for a portrait, and after being thanked, lifted off and went over the top of the hedges.

10:09 am on September 12th, 2012
We haven’t seen these here before, but this morning they were everywhere.
10:12 am on September 12th, 2012
I let Molly’s Mom sleep this morning, with me all cuddled up under her chin, and she said I was a good dog. Then we went in the kitchen for breakfast but she was poking around. I had to move things along because no eggs were in sight. A few head bumps and snoot pushes helped her so much that she called me a petit monstre and that means good dog too!
Happy birthday Barb!
10:12 am on September 12th, 2012
News from our basement. We now have two new smoke detectors. Patsy did not approve. She does not like ringing and binging. She had Dan’s emergency ringer early this morning. THEN, when Tom put in the new smoke detectors they talked and binged.
She is not pleased.
I am not pleased because all of the brandied peaches exploded.
Am I ever going to be able to read AFOC???
10:25 am on September 12th, 2012
Happy Birthday Barb!!!
Heck, Happy Birthday Week.
Good job River Bear Pack! Grreeaat Cake! “eat” being the word of the day here. Yum!
We’re with Wookie. Easy does it. Savor each chapter, each page, each WORD.
Royals: These Monarch butterfly photos you are sending are beautiful, beautiful. Nice to hear you are enjoying your vacation. The beach! You lucky dogs.
Welcome back to our Wose!
A Very Good Morning to All.
10:29 am on September 12th, 2012
Melanie: What’s this about exploding brandied peaches? We’ve heard of high notes breaking glasses, but smoke detectors? Poor Patsy…what a morning.
11:11 am on September 12th, 2012
T&G: That butterfly is called the question mark because of the markings on the underside of the wing. Here’s the Wikipedia article on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Question_Mark_Butterfly
11:13 am on September 12th, 2012
I wonder why the brandied peaches exploded. All of them?
Sam: Did you get your soft-boiled egg?
11:24 am on September 12th, 2012
So far, we have only read Chapter 1. We were hoping to get back to “I Thought You Were Dead” last night, but Mom and Pop decided a good, long walk was not to be missed on such a magnificent evening! We had a great time, especially Kat, who had never done this particular walk and so everything was new and needing to be explored.
11:24 am on September 12th, 2012
Another beautiful day…The sun is shining…A good book to read. What more can I say…Is this Heaven on Earth or what?
11:25 am on September 12th, 2012
My brother sent an email with jokes, one of which was, “Ok, so what’s the speed of dark?” I of course asked my physics prof friend who wrote: “Exactly the same as the speed of light .. as the light moves forward, the dark must retreat .. otherwise you have a mixture of light and dark – can’t have that!”
“Okay,” she said in a hesitant tone of complete incomprehension. (And why can’t we have a mixture of light and dark?)
11:27 am on September 12th, 2012
Oh, and forgot to say…Happy B-Day to Barb from moi!
11:28 am on September 12th, 2012
We just saw on the news yesterday that butterflies that normally are in the southern part of the US are being spotted in the mid section of the country. It is thought to be due to warming climes.
Exploding peaches? What went wrong?
Wookie, Glad you are feeling tip top.
11:30 am on September 12th, 2012
B: I’ve always thought of the gloaming as such a combination.
11:45 am on September 12th, 2012
B., I got my soft boiled egg and it even had some bacon bits in it! Now I smell some ham and salami in the refrigerator. That would make a great lunch.
11:46 am on September 12th, 2012
Masquers: I asked my friend about twilight and he said that that simply refers to the period after sunset: “…still a glow in the sky (sunlight bouncing off the dust particles in the air), but the sun isn’t above the horizon.”
11:49 am on September 12th, 2012
Sam: I think you need to watch your princessy figure–stay away from salami (and ham is too salty). I’m glad you had such a lovely breakfast.
12:16 pm on September 12th, 2012
What went wrong . .
I listened to people on the internet and did not do what our ancestors did. There is a reason why you use a crock with a loose top and DON’T seal the jars shut.
It’s called fermentation. Or, if not enough room in the jar from the gases the tops blow off, spreading half fermented peaches everywhere.
I was thinking a mixture of Light and Dark would be shadows. But I like the gloaming. That is one of my favorite words. “Gloaming”
12:37 pm on September 12th, 2012
An Author’s work is never done.
Melanie: Ouch! I take it Grace was not named after you? I hope you are okay. And…exploding alcoholic peaches! Never a dull moment at your house. I am taking a few deep breaths and sending them to you. Breathe in the calmness, breathe out the exploding peaches. In between all that you had time to bake a cake! And frolic with ? butterflies? You are amazing!
Barb: Happy Birthday. You get to celebrate multiple times with family close by. Nice. Enjoy. Reap the rewards of all that hard labor the past few months.
Wose: Are you going to tell us what the morse code said?
12:42 pm on September 12th, 2012
I like the idea of light and dark as shadows.
Gloaming is from the Old English word for dusk.
12:45 pm on September 12th, 2012
Just for you, Awesome Dawson:
My first post said “I’m here”
The second said “A smooch is nice”, since Kat interpreted the first message to be that I need smooches.
I think one of the dashes in my first message should have been separated…

We are very glad to hear from you, Wose.
The cake is great! Can we taste it? On second thought, we’d rather have a real chicken!
Bee, thanks for explaining twilight. We never knew what that meant exactly, but now that we know, we love it. Twilight is our favorite time of day. Such a beautiful color to sky and land.
1:05 pm on September 12th, 2012
Seeing white butterflies here in the past couple of years. Wonder what that means?
Wose: Whew. Thank you for the Morse Code translation. My skills in this area are a bit rusty, if non-existent.
O.Howlers: There is a lovely song about Twilight Time…trying to remember…….

We have white butterflies here also like the one pictured in the article. As far as I know, they reproduce in the butterfly stange; they eat in the caterpillar stage.

Bear,
Staff says white butterflies mean cabbage plants are near. heheheheh

Thanks for the morse code translations. I tried looking it up last night but all those dots and dashes had me confused in no time.
2:10 pm on September 12th, 2012
There are three twilights: civil, nautical And astronomical. The order is reversed before dawn. I always have the charts in my sail bag for my latitude and longitude.
Civil twilight is right after the sunset until the sun reaches a certain angle below the horizon. Then nautical and by the end of that you can no longer see land when out on the water. Finally astronomical is pitch dark.
2:13 pm on September 12th, 2012
Maggie, Check you SDD again.
2:21 pm on September 12th, 2012
In the gloaming the light has a blue cast. In the morning it is more of a gold. You can really see this if you take a long exposure photograph.
Love the song.

Staff & Abbie: Wow! Thanks.
2:43 pm on September 12th, 2012
Bear, Thanks for posting that song. It truly is lovely. Our favorite line is “When purple-colored curtains mark
the end of day”. We love that purple shade the world takes on at twilight. We have a beautiful Julia Longacre print of a barn in snow, with just that shade of purple that we love. Like we said, it is our very favorite time of day.
Speaking of beautiful, it is gorgeous here today, with this feel of Summer about to end. It is so darn beautiful, it makes us sad somehow, or maybe just melancholy. It’s like you can feel the earth settling in.
MollysMom, we were with you right up to astronomical. If it is pitch dark, isn’t that just nighttime?
2:48 pm on September 12th, 2012
Staff, The badges are awesome! All will be thrilled. Thank you again for your hard work.
We see a lot of the white cabbage butterflies in Illinois. They are attracted to anything in the cole family – cabbage, broccoil, brussel sprouts, cauiflower, etc. Butterflies are harmless, catipillars eat nonstop and are destructive. Always soak your home grown broccoli in salt water for a few minutes or you might be eating little green worms.
Barb got the most birthday (birth-week) messages ever. Now it is time to shower, get changed and go pick up the kids. Then back to their house for a couple of hours, then we are going out to dinner. BBL

ThumbsToenails up for your good v e t report. I am also enjoying the cooler weather.Triple Twilights: Mollypop’s mom you are a wealth of knowledge!
Twilight Purple: For awhile I had my house in Montana painted just that shade of purple that the mountains take on at twilight. Lovely.

I think we’re all reading, Masquers.
Wöökie, good to hear your news. Patsy is also feeling better with the cooler weather. She’s not as chipper as she once was, but she still loves her tummies.
Today did not get much better. Hoping for GREAT tomorrow.
6:56 pm on September 12th, 2012
OHowlers – I was afraid I was boring everyone to tears. Astronomical twilight is when the center of the sun is between 12 and 18 degrees below the horizon. All the twilights are based on the number of degrees the center of the sun is below the horizon.
My use of that info is that civil twilight is when we want all the boats that are out racing to be back in so we don’t have to call the Coast Guard. Nautical twilight is when you had better have a compass or be close to buoy lights. Astronomical twilight is when its really dark. It looks the same to me after the astronomical twilight is done.

I’m here…about the time I was finished resting while mom put stuff away we had a really big storm so I couldn’t post on the blog. We got 1.5 inches of rain. The monsoon arrived two months late and I’m guessing this will be its only appearance. The rain did a number on some of my projects in the backyard.

9:28 pm on September 12th, 2012
I better post this for her until she can remember…
This is from Alice M. Johnson
I am going to tell you of all the troubles Mr.Staff has been having this last week. First Mr.Staff decided to ‘help’ by cutting some branches off some trees that Staff planted (with help from a nephew and NO HELP FROM MR.STAFF) twenty years ago. Staff has been shaping and tweeking those trees for years and was she mad. Ohhhhh it has been a long time if ever that I have seen her that way.
After two days she decided to talk to him again. Mostly it was to demand he cut off the ugly stubs of branches that he had left sticking out like amputated limbs This was in a last ditch attempt to make the trees look less like they we being tortured.
Second the water pump stopped over the weekend and he had to dig down WAAAYYYY over his head to uncover the well and the plumbing tube that goes into the house. So the plumbers came today and it isn’t the pump and it is the line. Somewhere there is a blockage. They did not fix it today however they did pound up our concrete floor and empty half the basement onto the lawn in order to do it. They come back tomorrow.
Staff hasn’t had a shower since last Friday. She is getting a little niffy.
Third yesterday morning Mr. Staff go a phone call from Credit Card control wanting to know if he had tried to make a 1900.00 airplane ticket purchase. Nope. Now he is getting lots of phone calls from Credit card control
Staff says this is all bad Karma caused by torturing her once beautiful maple trees.
We don’t know for sure but we are feeling sort of sorry for Mr.Staff.
Staff says she will be glad to go to visit Dawson tomorrow on her way to the TOGA and TAKE A SHOWER!
9:28 pm on September 12th, 2012

Hi Beau! Yes, we had a few campfires and I sang a few songs. Your mountains are beautiful. The aspen trees are turning gold and snow appeard on the highest peaks while we were there.
I am watching the game. Timmy has a such a bad pitching record this year, but he is doing okay tonight…sob

Grudge!….I sort of get the impression that Staff holds a grudge. …heh!…I mean she remembers that 20 years ago Mr. Staff DID NOT help plant some trees….grunt!….And still holds it against him to this day….heh!….Maybe I should have saved him a piece of pie…..Naw!

“Wait Until Next Year” The Rockies will really do better next year.
I had heard rumors that Tulo would return in September, but I agree with you…let him heal completely.

We can’t stay awake any longer.
The Rockies could still save this game.

Cargo!…He stole another base!….Woooo!… Now if he could just get to home plate…grunt!…We are getting tired here too and might just go upstairs and listen to the rest of it on the radio….grunt!….Trouble is, I always fall asleep before the game is over…wheeze!…In fact I usually fall asleep the minute my head hits my warm soft covers…sniffle!

When mom was cleaning out the flower bed, she found 2 eggs! Then tonight when she was dumping the trash another one fell out. I would love to have seen whatever laid those eggs. It is a little bitty flower bed.
Then tonight a flock of geese flew over mom and dad at about 50 feet altitude. They were in a perfect V and flying due south. very low. I could have told them that there is a pond just a few blocks to the west. The Goose Positioning System must be off.
Mom would take the pruners to dad if he messed with her carefully crafted shrubbery!

Banter! By the time I made it to consistent Internet access worthy of this here blog so I could banter with a certain pug, it is no doubt said pug is sound asleep in his warm, soft bed with all his baseball toys.
Rio: If you want to hear them, I have tales to tell about adventures in flying and eating.
Barb: Happy Birthday!!!

It occured to me today that I say thank you only after all the monumental things you all do for the kennel. With that in mind I just want to throw out an independent “thank you”. We very much appreciate the support you’ve given us.
What it means in real terms is that dogs who wouldn’t have had a home now do…. Even if they insist on running through their poop before jumping up on me… I still love them.

Happy Birthday Week, Barb! Sorry this is late, but Mom had volunteer night at the shelter so she didn’t get to the blog.
You are more that welcome, AJ! We are a bit selfish in our sponsorship meaning that we just love “living your lives” in the north. So, let us throw that “thank you” right back to you!

PS: Welcome back, Wose!! You were missed.
