The conference is expensive. OFA of two names was doing his bit this morning. Here’s from their brochure.

8:50-10:00 The Engine That Drives Your Story: How Not to Get Stuck
Peter Abrahams will discuss the importance of understanding the engine or heart of your story and how to make its beat work for you. He will show how plotting, POV, and characterization all flow from this central concept. He will also reveal the secrets of Enid’s Laws. Questions & Answers.

Edgar-award winner Peter Abrahams – “criminally gifted” according to the New York Times Book Review – is the author of 27 novels. These include the New York Times bestselling Echo Falls mystery series. Among his adult books are OBLIVION (Shamus prize finalist), THE FAN (made into a movie with Robert DeNiro) and LIGHTS OUT (Edgar award finalist). DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE was a finalist for the Edgar best young adult mystery award and won the Agatha in the same category. BEHIND THE CURTAIN and INTO THE DARK were Agatha finalists. In her Cleveland Plain Dealer review of NERVE DAMAGE (2007), Michelle Ross wrote: “I swear, if one more literary person says in that oh-so-condescending tone, ‘Oh, I don’t read … mysteries,’ I’m going to take a novel by Peter Abrahams and smack him on his smug little head.” As Spencer Quinn, Abrahams also writes the Chet and Bernie mystery series, the first of which DOG ON IT, reached #7 on the New York Times bestseller list.

Thanks, Melanie. Now we know exactly why the boys weren’t around this am. The conference looks very interesting, but we still can’t wrap our head around the doctors and lawyers mix.

Hi Siber-H (at the top) and Everyone.

Melanie? Did you know that Zoe and I bought one of the last remaining Kindle One Touch e-readers? Amazon isn’t going to sell them anymore. I suspect they want people to buy the Kindle Fire.

Good morning! Kat is back home, and very very tired from her trip to Maryland. She can’t remember much of it, except for the most wonderful sleeping with a humming underneath, and being rocked like a baby. She does remember being on thesmall boat, and allowed to run loose with the wind in her face. She says that was exhilarating. Thanks to Bear for posting the picture of her on that boat. The rest of us don’t think we would have enjoyed being on all that water, but we do think Kat now has great sea bay ice water experience she could use should the Snowhook’s team call her up.

Mom is having some sort of allergic reaction to something. Her face is blown up, and she has itchy, hurty rashes all over her body. Jeez! This isn’t looking like a great 2nd week of our vacation.

Fellow Sibers, I am concerned about your mom. If it gets any worse take her to the ER. Could she have been bit by something?

Kat has the long legs of an Iditarod Dog. She could do it!

This was in this morning’s news about Amherst where Sam lives. It’s a northern suburb of Buffalo. There is already a huge uproar about drowning the beavers.

Siber-H – I agree Oley’s Mom needs medical attention. Is there an Immediate Care nearby?

  9. OleyHowlers
    2:43 pm on August 12th, 2012

MPM, It seems to us that there must be a better way to handle the beaver problem than trapping and killing them.

Siber and MPM, Mom is taking benedryl which has her feeling very groggy. She said she would call her doc tomorrow. These rashes and swelling have been coming on gradually since ~mid-week last week. At first, she thought it must be poison, but now it seems like some sort of food allergy response. We are afraid that it has to do with all of the wonderful fresh tomatoes she has been eating!

Howlers: Take care of your mother and make sure she goes to the doctor if it doesn’t improve by tomorrow morning.

    O. Howlers’ – have your Mom cook the tomatoes first just in case that’s the problem.

The reaction to the news article is already overwhelming. People wonder how there’s no money to put fences around the commemorative trees but there’s money to hire a wildlife expert.

O.Howlers: My question is…why do these things always happen on weekends when it is a hassle to get help? Dog forbid your mom is allergic to tomatoes that delectable fruit we all love!
Siber Mom: Climb under the Quilt for a spell. As Siber-H says, Meashka is keeping a close watch til you are feeling tip tip once again.

    Disturbing story about the beavers.

Hi everyone – Mama has been on the phone with Melanie for a while. Now she and Dad are talking about a special prayer for the family tonight.
We would like to have the Plunderers with us – we Corgis are going to be outside with them at the regular time. Those who have been here can visualize the prayer bench that we showed you. Please picture that and come stand with us.
And to everyone that hasn’t been here – picture an old wooden bench glider, sitting on a flagstone patio in the backyard of our house. It faces out into a down sloping clearing, and then a gigantic mountain laurel bush marks the beginning of the trees. At 9 tonight, it will be dark, so the trees won’t be very clear, but there will be lots of night bird and insect sounds, and very often a big brown toad is sitting on the flagstones, just listening to the world around him. Please paint this picture in your mind, and then reach out for the hand of the Plunderer standing next to you. We also hope all the four leggeds will be there. We will make a circle, and send up our prayers on the wings of sage smoke.
    See you tonight.

OMD!!! We just now watched the Irish Olympic commentators. That was hysterical! We want more more more of those guys! Mom said she didn’t even keep track of her itching, swelling mess while she rolled on the floor laughing. Did youse guys know that we are all Irish Huskies? Mom says it is so.

T&G, what is the reason for the prayer tonight?

Home!…My friend is home from errands and hobby store shopping…grunt!…With all the frames she has collected she never seems to have the right one when she needs one…grump!…Groceries are done, laundry is done, project is on-going, someone says its time to to sit downstairs and cool off before roasting pans and pans of chilis which is next on the list of things to do….wheeze!

Prayer!…this sounds ominous for some reason..sniff!…I hope Melanie, Dan and Zoe are alright…wuffle!

We have been busy today with more moving stuff. Had to catch the last 10 chickens and haul them over to friend Kim’s home where they are boarding for a few weeks. Then Kim’s husband came back and took out all the nesting boxes and roosts in the coop. Tomorrow it will be cleaned out.

We feel an urgency and are concerned about Melanie’s family. We will clear our evening schedule to able to join everyone at the prayer vigil.

Food!…To change the subject I have to tell you about all the food thats been happening!…heh!heh!…Someones been roasting chilis again. That is hot work. And the smell!…wow!…Those things pop and crackle like crazy…sniff!…Since the oven was hot and the kitchen was roasting my friend made a crazy big meatload with green chilis and bell pepper from the garden…slurp!…She even made a mini-meatloaf for me and Beau. It doesn’t have any seasoning in it, she assures me…grunt!… But it is baking right beside the gigantic spicy meatloaf so I am sure it will absorb some of that hotness…wheeze!…If that isn’t enough, she is baking two huge potatoes and says she wants to make twice baked tators later for supper…yum!

Cool!…Now we are downstairs cooling off and watching the Rockies game…sniff!…Surprisingly, they are behind right now…wuffle!sneeze!

I have sent Melanie’s video to my sailing friends and they are really having a good laugh. I can give a brief explanation of what’s going on, but not as good as the announcer.

When the video starts the time at the bottom hits 4 minutes and a horn sounds. (We use to use guns shooting blanks.) The boat that Spielberg is on put up a blue flag with a white square in it – the prep flag. The horn is to alert the sailors that a flag change has been made. The prep flag stays up until 1 minute before the start, then another horn and that flag comes down. These racers are so good you see them all getting into position. They want to be as close to the starting line as possible without going over. If they go over, they have to come back and do it again at a big loss of time.

I forgot to mention in the sailing video – all races start going directly into the wind, which sailboats can’t do straight on. They have to be at a 45 degree angle, sometimes it can be pinched to 40 degrees but that can get them into trouble if they lose the wind in the sails. The Olympic sailors make this all look easy, but it’s not.

Creator – we thank you for giving us the gift of life. We thank you for not only the things of this world that keep us alive – the air, the water and the food. We thank you also for giving us the things that keep our hearts and souls alive – love, devotion, and caring.
Creator – for some, the ability to care is hard, for their hearts are afraid. They are afraid to suffer the hurt that caring can bring. They are afraid to suffer the pain that comes from loss. We come to you to ask for a way to open those hearts, to teach them to rejoice in what is, not to fear what is to come.
There are times in this life that can be hard. And many of those times come from caring. It is hard to care for a child lost in the labyrinth of drugs. It is hard to care for a loved one whose mind is distorted or unclear. It is hard to care for a parent whose body no longer allows them to live free and unfettered. But Creator, we ask you to give us the strength to not just endure, but to succeed through the hard times, strength to push aside the anger and frustration, and let the care and love we still feel deep inside soothe our pain.
Creator – you chose to give us these hearts, these frail and easily injured center of feeling. Guide us to use them well. When our skin is injured, it is healed by becoming thicker. When our bones are injured, they are healed by becoming harder. But let our hearts not be healed in these ways. Help us to not let them grow hard, let our spirits not become thicker and dulled to the emotions of others. We ask that in a time when it is most difficult to care, our hearts grow and allow in the love of all who support us to counteract the pain that we endure in our caring.
Just as each of us has a different appearance, a different voice, different likes and dislikes, so also each of us has different strengths and ways to endure hardship. Let us borrow from each other the strength that another has. We reach out into your universe and hold the hands of our friends and family who need our strength. Let those who need support feel that comfort; feel the circle of love that surrounds them. Let them feel these hands that will hold them up when their hearts are too heavy to carry anymore. Let them feel these shoulders that will bear their burden alongside them. Let the pain in their hearts be lifted away as the smoke lifts from the sage.
We ask you to watch over Melanie and Zoe and help their hearts be strong. We ask that they understand their importance to many others, so that they will believe they must be important to themselves. We ask you to watch over Dan and guide him gently as his feet head towards his next path.
Creator – our time in your world is our lesson. We can choose to learn well, even when the lessons are hard. We ask you to continue to be our teacher and help us to live your lessons well.
Creator – we thank you for this day and for giving us the gift of life. We thank you for not only the things of this world that keep us alive – the air, the water and the food. We thank you also for giving us the people and the animals that keep our hearts and souls alive. We thank you for our families, both the ones of blood and the ones of choice, and for bringing us together in this circle. We are a family together.
    Amen

Melanie, please know how much you mean to Zoe , Dan, and your family of two and four-leggeds. Please remember how much you mean to us here on the blog, and how much we love you. It is difficult and tiring for you and Zoe to take care of Dan, but know that even though he is not well, he does love you both.

Please know that my prayers are with you.
