“Why not?” says Spence.

“Because I’m stuck in the HOV lane on the Southeast Expressway,” Admin says. “We haven’t moved for 25 minutes. I’m timing it.”

“How’s your blood pressure?”

“At the moment? Can’t be measured by current technology.”

Welcome Katie.

Good morning, y’all! Sorry, Admin, sounds like you should have stayed on the Cape! That’s why Big City living just isn’t for Mom. In fact, that’s one of the reasons she wasn’t so sure she wanted to go to Atlanta to meet Rebecca. She’s a little terrified of the traffic there. Luckily, she decided to go, and managed to get there and back with only a few terrifying moments!

About to drive to Anchorage…7.5 hours. Should be highway speeds but with tourists’ rvs and tour buses, who knows? My trusty Subaru had been parked in the garage 6 months = dead battery and two flat tires. I charged the battery for 8 hours without success and my air compressor evidently was not powerful enough for the tires. So I will be taking my Toyota Prius: good gas mileage but room for only one dog kennel. #tryingnotstressandIhaven’tevenleft

Gah. Returned home to a katastrophe of the dreaded computer variety. I asked what was being done about it. BSD said he had put in a call to someone who is fast becoming quite techno-savey: Siber-H. So, until help arrives (hopefully today) we may be incommunicato.

Big news here in Chevy Chase. The Wookiemobile got upgraded to a new, 2012 Volvo Cross Country this past weekend. I did make sure that dad kept in all the secret antidetection devices and the combo hot wings griller/beer dispenser, but other than that, it is fully equipped with all new stuff. Woo! Woo!

Also, question for B&M. My folks got a new heirloom tomato they had never heard off at a farm market this Saturday called Cherokee Green (I think it is a counsin of Cherokee Purple), and were wondering if you were familiar with it. It is a completely green tomato, with green insides. They thought it was quite yummy and may try to plant one next year, in addition to the Cherokee Purples, which are still doing terrific this year. (Unfortunately, the rest of our tomato plants this year are not doing that well.)

Finally, we just got the latest Rosenfelt Andy Carpenter book, called Leader of the Pack (I think it was just published last Tuesday). So far, really good, but they are taking it slow to savor it.

Stopping in for a quick hello. Been busy today with many real estate calls trying to order things, schedule things, blah, blah.

Just found 50 cds tucked away in a cabinet. Kids don’t want them so off to the thrift store they go.

Wookie, We here have not heard of Cherokee Green, but it must be related. The partially green, yellow and orange tomatoes we have sampled in the past were just so-so on flavor. We had our first Black Krim the other day and it was excellent. The Box Car Willie will not be repeated nor will the Black Sea Man. It is not producing well at all. Plus it is determinate (all at once) so not a great producer. Several of the others have lots of large green tomatoes. How is that new pink variety doing that you got from White Flower Farm?

I’ve always wanted to drive to Anchorage but it would take a lot more than 7.5 hours, even in light traffic. Going up the AlCan highway starting from Long Island, I’d be happy for 8 days.
Yesterday we took the train and subway to the Bronx to see the Chelsea Football Club play Paris St. Germaine at the first soccer game every played at the New Yankee Stadium. Donna and I had time so we walked the perimeter of the baseball park they’ve created at the site of the old Yankee Stadium. Our seats at the park looked over at Monument Park. I pointed out to Donna that if you went by the size of the plaque Steinbrenner’s contribution to the Yankees was the equivalent of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe Dimaggio combined.

It doesn’t look like the pregnant husky rescue will happen. I was told one dog was small (35 lbs) so I thought she would fit into a medium crate which would fit into my car. That information was incorrect. Also, both pregnant huskies are 2 hours away. The dog owner leaves the property at 3 am and doesn’t get back until 8 pm. Anchorage rescue would have to crate the dog, drive it to Anchorage, keep it overnight in the crate until I picked her up in the morning. Crate w/dog would be lifted into my car (if it would have fit) then I would drive 6.5 hours home without stopping. They were already worried about the stress of a 2-hour drive to the Anchorage rescue on a wildl, pregnant dog much less a 7 hour drive to back to my place. Plus I have no one at home to lift the crate with dog into my new dog run. Anyway, I think it would have been cruel to crate a pregnant dog for 19 hours without a break. The dogs are completely unsocialized/wild so they can’t be leashed. The have progressed enough that some have collars but even that is an ordeal.

I’ve been on pins and needles about this for over a month (these are two dogs that they just discovered were pregnant–part of the 19 left with the owner out of 70 original dogs). Puppies could arrive anytime and I can’t transport a mom and pups as she would be stressed enough to harm the puppies either intentionally or unintentionally. It just wasn’t meant to be. I was willing to work hard to socialize the mother but taming a feral dog who then has essentially feral puppies is probably unrealistic. If I wasn’t working half-time, I would just bring the future puppies home if they could be gotten from the mother and feed them night and day. But that is risky too. I feel bad. Life is hard and sometimes there just isn’t a solution or a good ending.

CHarris I hope you are safe in Anchorage now.

Bear good luck with your computer and Mr.Husky with your Kindle and Melanie with your nasty old phone box. heh

Dawson I used to put the temp down to 75 in Dad’s room in the daytime. Turn it up at night when Mom went to be. Dad never noticed. snicker.

    Love the red Nasturtiums, B.

I have been slowly trying to integrate two years of quilting stuff back into my quilt room. When I go back to Minneapolis I will have to have a no buying quilt stuff rule. Sigh….

Staff: Dad is onto my shenanigans now. Whenever I have turned it down he has turned it back up…sigh. I just leave it off rather than turned up to 80 degrees.

CHarris, don’t feel bad. You have done everything you could. What you have just described is an impossible situation. We are proud of you for trying. Thank You

I need some help with math. Anybody? I’m trying to figure out the ratio of how much I can get away with to how much AJ loves me. My heart is hurting for HawbitHookHarris and the poor dogs in this situation. Can I seriously be considering fostering them? AJ will kill me. Of course, it was almost 24 hours before he noticed Howard in the kennel. Carry the two…Gah! I hate math.

Snowhook Bella: No! SiberH: What say you?

Oh goody! Mom has gone to bed early. Me too. Goodnight all. Hoping all is well in pugland. Prayers for Plunderers.

Rebecca, I am going to say the same thing Dawson said, NO!
I am going to tell you what you already know: The two adult females dogs are not adoptable and it is probably impossible to fix their behavior problems. You, or the rescue they came from, would have them for the rest of their lives.
There is all the hope he world for the puppies, but that would be close to a full time job for someone. You and AJ already have more than enough to do.
Rebecca, We love you for considering this, but mom says sometimes in life, we have to be realistic.

    Mr.Husky up top for me.

Rio hasn’t posted since last night. His friend was really hot under her collar last night. I hope she is in her cool basement twirling paper and watching the Rockies win a game.

I hope she is OK and didn’t blow a gasket.

    sniff…

We are a little late in chiming in, but we are here at last. Mama and Dad spent the day traveling and unpacking and all thast, but now they are home home home – until the next Really Big Shew.

CHobbit, and Rebecca – your hearts are obviously bigger than your common sense. We understand the heartache you are both feeling, but as Siber says – sometimes we do have to be realistic. Otherwise, each and every Plunderer’s home would be jam packed with puppies and kittens and oldsters and tripods and special need critters. Sometimes we have to let the universe take some of the burden off our shoulders.

Mama said we can report that everyone was good for Grampa this time. No spots on carpets, no messes on couches.

And now Mama is going to be buckling down and getting some of her past due orders completed and in the mail. Really.

Hope all is well with Rio – sounds like things have been a little stressful there in PugVille.

The numbers just didn’t add up. It was too close to how much AJ loves me and how much I can get away with to ignore reality. I’m frustrated, because Dawson, SiberH and Golinka speak the truth—a truth that (they’re right) I already knew— and that makes it all the worse. Life isn’t fair and often seems to slide against those souls that need a break the most.

I held the dogs a little longer as I did chores tonight, talked a little softer, nuzzled a closer and thanked the heavens for the newest rescues in the Kennel: Elmer, Leonard and Florence.

I also thanked the heavens for CHobbitHarris, who committed herself to loving and caring for the dogs despite the difficulties the situation posed. CHawbitHookHarris—you are tops in my book!

Oh, if AJ asks, can we all agree to tell him I came to the realistic and sensible conclusion on my own? It will help me for future dealings.

    Tops, CHobbit, tops!

Your secret is safe with us, Bella. I know what you mean though. Sometimes I have to close my heart off or it will break. Not that I am weak, but so many sweet souls do not deserve the lives they are handed.
