Good morning from show central. Last day of the “big”show. The art is wonderful, creative, inspiring and imaginative. Unfortunately, it is also mostly still here. We are praying for a great sales day for EVERYONE.
And we are going to ask the show management to observe the 3 o’clock Moment of Silence that is observed around the country at major events. Even major league sports halt at 3.
Hope you all have a glorious day in every way.

Ooooo – bad karma for show organizers. We were told that an art show is no place to have a moment of silence since we “don’t want people to be sad; we want them to buy art”.
Hmmm. Really makes us stop and think about the intentions and soul of these people.
And we will hold our own moment of silence at 3.

    Greetings All!

T&G, I don’t understand the problem with having a moment of silence. We should all be proud of our country, and give eternal thanks for all those who have served this country. Hope there are big sales for you today!

Happy Memorial Day everyone. T&G, you are right, those conference folks seem fairly misguided in their approach to this very important holiday.

B&M: We planted six tomato plants, five heirloom and one more standard. Mom ordered the heirlooms from White Flower Farm. Those are Cherokee Purple (two plants, because they were so yummy last year); Pierce’s Pride; Rose deBerne; and Bloody Butcher. We had planted Brandywines a lot in the past, but last year they did not turn out very well, so we tried some others this year. The non-heirloom is Sweet One Hundreds, which are yummy cherry-type tomatoes that mom just got from a local nursery. Because March was so hot here, we actually planted the heirlooms in mid-April, which was a lot earlier than in the past. The only one that was a bit slow at first was the Rose deBerne, but all are doing really good now. The Sweet one Hundreds was just planted last week, but it has a shorter gestation period anyway. Zuchinis have also been planted, some lettuces (yum Arugula and other stuff too), the standard crop of herbs, and voila! — some watermelon (this is just an experiment, so we will ser if they actually grow).

That’s all for now, the folks are heading back to the porch for more cleaning.

    11:19 am on May 28th, 2012

Wookie, We agree, Cherokee Purple is one of our favorites, but we couldn’t find it this year. Local place was sold out. So we got Black Krim and Black Sea Man to try instead. We grew some Bloody Butcher (can’t you just picture him?) last year, but it wasn’t our favorite for size or taste. Let us know what you think. A friend from Jefferson City, Mo. sent us seeds for German Giant and Pink Ponderosa which are both new for us. We got our plants in about a month after yours, so that excplains the size difference. We are going to Google those other two.

That was a great story on the 11 animal heroes. Thank you for that.

Wookie, That Rose deBerne looks very interesting. Do you ever seed save? We would be interested in some of those if you do. When we Googled White Flower Farm we noticed that they also sell Paul Robeson. That is hands down our favorite tomato. Put it on your list to try next year, if you haven’t already grown it.

Dawson, not sure if we commented last night, but the link for the onions that Staff put up is exactly the same as the onions we had. We eventually dug them out and started over because they were taking over!

    12:11 pm on May 28th, 2012

I placed my order. Rio will now have to make the final bouquet of flowers. Heh. I want them pink, teal, and cream. They will nicely go in the living room. I have the perfect vase.

And I also ordered some of Linda the lurker’s pretzels. I am going to share them with my quilting buddies. I have had those pretzels before and they are yummy!

And a hoodie! Zowwiieee. I hope it has a zipper down the front. Let me know Rebecca.

I just had to refresh the hummingbird sugar water. I was ordering away on Snowhook and the hummer came to the door and hovered- staring in at me. I went out and checked the nectar and it was yucky. Had to clean and refill. Should be good to go now. Those hummers can be rather bossy. Snicker.

Staff & B&M: Wonder why that creepy type of onion was developed in the first place…seems one would require an entire patch for them to grow.
Heh, heh. The little hummingbird has it made! A beautiful container for water and “Staff” to serve at its beck and call.

With all this talk of tomatoes (which we Love) we may just try our hand at growing a few. Calling Wookie, Barb & all the gardeners out there, which variety do you recommend for a beginner?

  20. Barb & Maggie
    1:04 pm on May 28th, 2012

Bear, We like the heirlooms better, but you need to stake them or use cages, as they get tall. They do not do well in patio pots. If you are going to grow one in a patio pot, the little cherry tomatoes do better as the plant is more compact. They need lots of sun, and a rich well drained soil. Another secret we have learned, plant them deep-several inches deeper than they are growing in their little pot. Makes for a sturdier plant.

Barb just tried to use a credit card for an on line purchase and it was refused! She called Cap One and they said they put a hold on it due to “possible fraudlent activity”. This is the 2nd card in the last month. Small charges for a hotel in Kansas. Last one was a hotel in Mexico. Now she had to cancel the 2nd credit card and get a new one. How does this happen?

    My silent thanks went forth.

Finally back. Hmmm. Zoë had gotten her arrival time wrong. It was noon not 10:43 am. So I’ve been on the road all day. Passed several memorial services at local graveyards and two parades. Still managed to be on time for the wrong time.

There is no Starbucks in Springfield. sigh.

Had a book, read, texted GLAD. They had a great time camping. YSAS went to a birthday barbecue last night.

Today? He’s going to an Italian BBQ at Hamlet’s mother’s house. I’m drooling.

Zoe had a great time. She’s glad she doesn’t live in NYC. Missed the dogs.

We stopped in to see Dan. He’s looking grand. Had his Navy Korea fight cap on. He looked go.

It is now time to get a heating pad on my back and crash!

Oh, got to find a link to something that Steve put on Facebook. Be back then I’ll crash.

They had a moment of silence at the booth. They explained it to the two customers in the booth. The man removed his hat and all stood for a minute. Then the folks asked why the art show didn’t do the moment. And Mama told them….snicker.
They have officially decided that this show is not for us. When people start asking Our Dad if the feathers on the bears are ones that HE wears when he is “in costume” – well, some people are too ignorant to even snap back at. But Mama was very, very bad. Another lady asked Dad why he wasn’t “in costume”. Mama gave her a full up and down look – (she wad wearing a very ugly, artsy fartsy outfit) and said she was very glad the lady had worn HER costume for the day. A couple people in the booth snickered, but Dad said Mama wasnt very nice. He’s right. She’s hot and tired and fed up.
Especially since she didn’t get Rebecca’s suggestion til just now. She SHOULD have just said” that will be $75 please” and smiled.
Oh well – theres always next time….oh wait….NO THERE ISN’T!
we like all our other shows so much better.

    Hello Everybody!
It is a very hot day again. Poor Ned and Annie had to go on a ride up in the hills, but they all enjoyed themselves. Then Mom and Pop’s riding friends came back here for a “Hunt Breakfast”. We wanted bacon…looked our cutest…really sucked up. But no go.
We did a Moment of Silence with IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) at 12:01. Then we did a moment with youse guys at 3:00. Now we are back to chores. Then delicious pork chops from Caw Caw.

Or, for a healthier meal, brush the fish with olive oil and then put the bread crumbs on the top of it and bake it.
My favorite way is this: Melt butter in the pan you are going to bake the fish in and then coat both sides of the fish in the melted butter. Place the fish in that pan with the remaining melted butter and coat the top of the fish with the bread crumbs and bake. Yum

Blou is up top right now. I hope Tyb and his pop are doing well. They seem to keep pretty busy.

Rose, no need to worry about the $5.00 difference. It’s for Snowhook and I’m still getting a great item.

Mom had to work today, but she snuck some time to look at OTAS and GLAD’s wedding pictures. She got about 2/3 of the way through then had to stop. What a beautiful, beautiful wedding. Glad she doesn’t have to chose which pics are the favorites! Thank you, Melanie, for sharing the link.

Home home – they are finally home. They are hot and tired and stinky and dirty, but they are home and we love them anyway.
(Plus – Dad set up the air conditioner in the bedroom – we love that!)
Mama wishes this art show was better for her. Being right in her own backyard, it would be so wonderful if it was a rip roaring success. We think its just not her crowd.
But she got a real laugh out of all of your comments. We had a great time imagining Siber, Wookie, Alice, Rio, Maggie and the Pack running rampant thru the art show, grabbing folks by their pant legs. Thanks for helping cheer her up – it was a great help.
You all would have enjoyed the fabulous art that was at the show. There is a guy who makes porcelain fish with wonderful faces – some funny, some scary. And a potter who creates his own glazes that are irridescent and look like oil on water. There is another guy who does sculptures out of scrap metal – our favorite this year was the one of a giant bird – it was titled “Egret – I have a few”. There were over 220 artists with their creations. What an experience – to be surrounded with so many talented creative people, each putting their heart out on display for the public. Wow.
But we’re glad she’s home now. She wants to get back to playing with her clay just for the sheer fun of it. And we want to sleep on her feet under the table in the Mud Room.

Welcome back Stinky Mama! Annabelle is concerned that Leonard, the Storyteller not the dog’s lap will get cold if the Royals and Rio are hogging your lap. Now that she is retired and has extra time on her paws, she can make future shows to make sure he doesn’t feel ignored.

Bella – tell Annabelle that she is welcome anytime, but Dad’s lap is a territorial battleground between Gilly and Sage. Its really pretty funny to watch. One of them will start with sleeping half in Dad’s lap, and half on the couch. Then the other one starts insinuating themselves very innocently into the other half of Dad’s lap. And then, starts to casually streeetttcchhhhhh out in “sleep” and start pushing the other one off. Little by little the original “lapper” get pushed very gradually onto the couch, and the encroacher settles very comfortably into the middle of the lap. Until the original lapper realizes that their position has been usurped, and that one starts the whole process in reverse. Sometimes the action is a better show than the reruns on tv.

T&G: I will let Annabelle know that the Storyteller’s lap is covered. She was concerned that it was going to be a three way paw brawl between the Royals and Rio leaving Leonard, the person not the dog unattended. She said that was unacceptable. I think she’ll rest better knowing that his lap isn’t left unattended.
