“Why not?” says Spence.
“Factors beyond our control,” says Admin.
“Meaning you’re expected on the tennis court in twenty minutes?”
“Something like that.”
“Before you go, did you see those great pictures of AJ and the team on the trail yesterday?”
“In the comments section? Yeah. Maybe we’ll get some more. Good luck today, AJ! Bye for now.”

Kat back asleep shortly thereafter!
9:22 am on January 28th, 2012
Good morning, Oley and all y’all! Good news: Those Girls are gone! Bad news: So is my girl. 🙁 Sigh.
9:22 am on January 28th, 2012
Have fun playing tennis Admin. Good luck AJ.
Good morning all.
9:33 am on January 28th, 2012
Tennis wins.
Oley Howlers: Was Kat keeping you awake? Maybe Kat had a sympathy upset stomach for Rebecca.
Kirby: You and Sam have something in common. You will both be missing your girls.
Snowhook Bella: If I’m reading the stats correctly, it looks as if AJ is in first place. WhoooHoooo! Go Snowhook doggies!
Good Morning B.
9:40 am on January 28th, 2012
Dawson, nobody got much sleep last night. We didn’t even know where Mom, Pop, and the pipsqueak had disappeared to until they got home at ~1:00 am. Then they still had to eat their pizza that they were ready to eat earlier.
Kat is not allowed to play with us today either.
9:45 am on January 28th, 2012
Oh, KirbyT. Change is hard.
Tennis? Burrr! Hope it’s a heated surface. Admin would be playing ice tennis here.
Glad Kat is feeling better, OH! May she continue to do better.
Dawson? Are you getting rid of more wallpaper?
B.Stover. Looking forward to seeing you with a retired sled dog in your lap.
Good morning all!
I tried to find out where Kershner’s is on the trail map. Asked on Facebook.
Well, time to go to the dump!
9:45 am on January 28th, 2012
I hope Kat gets better soon.
Any of the Snowhook dogs are welcome to join me here on my easy chair.
Good news Jasper regarding the bump. I’m glad they appreciate you.
9:47 am on January 28th, 2012
Quick good morning to all!
Kat and Rebecca: Hope your tummies are feeling better this morning.
Go, AJ, Go!!!!
Admin: Indoor tennis, I take it?
Rio: The Rose Bouquest has special restorive powers. I was twirling in bed last night!
Interesting fact:

Lots going on today! I hope Kat, Rebecca, and Staff are feeling better.
Congrats to Dan and Zoe!
Good luck to AJ!
I hope that Admin has a good game.
Mom is going to play bingo today at the Elks Lodge. My boys are coming. Cody has six months sobriety and has held a job for that long. Chad has been sober for about 3 weeks, if he is being honest. Neither one is working a program, although Cody is back in therapy. Actually, he is undergoing hypnotherapy. He has some deep, deep wounds that need healing. I would like for Chad to go, but he has to make his own appointments.

Good morning all.
We agree with Rose, That must be inside tennis. Have a good game, Admin.
Hope Kat is feeling better this morning. Sometimes puppies eat things that are not good for them.
Barb is off for errands – grocery, li-berry and an extra stop to pick up my salmom kibble.
Go Snowhook!

You guys won’t believe where I am! My Dad and my Boy decided that on their way to the Syracuse football game today they could drop me off at my Girl’s dorm room. Right now I’m zooming down the I-90. My job for today is to help her study, something I am very good at.
10:14 am on January 28th, 2012
I am glad you are getting your sleep Kat. It really helps me. Sleep is important. I don’t suppose Rebecca is getting any sleep though.
10:20 am on January 28th, 2012
Sam: Sorry, but I’m just not buying it. I don’t how you can possibly be quiet enough to help your girl study — after all, you wouldn’t let Mollypop’s Mom sleep when she was so sick! I have a vision of you spending the day jumping on your girl’s bed!!!
10:32 am on January 28th, 2012
Ha!
Kirby? Are you just a little jealous of Sam?
Melanie: The wallpaper is gone from the itsy bitsy bathroom. The wall is half painted with primer. Only half done because I had a mini break down at that point and quit! Today I work the 12 hour shift and after that: gamboling! I will be easy to beat tonight.
Wolfie: Congrats to Cody on keeping sober and a job for 6 months. Hopefully Chad is not bullshitting you and is also on the right road. I love Bingo.
Kat and OleyHowlers: Sleep, sleep, sleep.
Go Snowhook!
10:49 am on January 28th, 2012
Wölfie, good tail thumps and paws clicking for you boys.
Jasper, your mom’s bumps are great. YSAS gets bumps for his own wardrobe and other things, but his bumps are not as HUGE as your mom’s bumps were!
Dawson, good luck.
B.Stover, hope your recliner is expandable.
Sam, have fun!
Staff, hope you’re feeling better!
Okay, I asked DBMSDR where Kershner’s was and their reply was on Trapper’s Creek. Snort! as a certain Pugster would say.
So I went on Google Earth and found one thing on Trapper’s Creek. Is it the correct creek? Is it anywhere near where AJ and team are resting? Lord knows. I just know that the picture of that area is a WHOLE bunch of wilderness. The part where I found a Trapper’s Creek is marked by a push pin.

10:56 am on January 28th, 2012
Dawson: Me? Jealous of Sam? What, just because she gets to see her girl? Nah! I’ll probably get to see my girl in April…sigh.
10:58 am on January 28th, 2012
I got here as early as I could to find out what is happening in the race. GO SNOWHOOK!
Kat, I read last night’s posts and got very worried about you. I hope you are on your way to feeling better.
Same goes for you Rebecca. You really had no time to recover from the stomach flu.
Wolfie, Prayers for your boys.
11:14 am on January 28th, 2012
AJ!….Where is AJ and the Junior A-Team at this morning?…snort!…Are they on a lay-over?…sniff!

Rio, I don’t know but the Standings page shows that AJ hasn’t done his 6 hour layover yet. So, maybe he is doing it now?
The map on their website isn’t very good, but I am sure this race doesn’t have a lot of money to play around with.
11:26 am on January 28th, 2012
Wolfie: My best to your boys.
Cool map Melanie.
Sam: I hope your girl doesn’t have any exams she has to study for. (Just kidding.)

So far: Aliy, Ryne, Dallas, Justin, Tamara, and Jerry are all into Kershner`s cabin. They all have a 6 hour layover here. I will update when i get more info :)”

Thanks Melanie and please do update us when they post more info.
11:34 am on January 28th, 2012
Here’s from their web site, no mention of the photographer.
This is the Morgan checkpoint. AJ has already been through here.

Errands!…Someone here has to run all kinds of errands this morning…snort!…I get to go along because the grocery store is not involved…heh!…I hope AJ and Rebecca are both getting some sleep…grunt!
11:45 am on January 28th, 2012
Morning all. Sorry the Kats were so rude to you last night Rio. Now you know what we have to put up with all the time. sniff…
Kat – you just snuggle up inthis here quilt. We’ll all take care of you. Very glad it was not an obstruction. Wonder if there is a stomach flu that afflicts the Nation Within?
Another errand day in the making. Hope we at least get some chews to keep us busy.

The mushers are starting to head south! Aily was the first to leave Kershner’s at 7:14 am!
AJ was not far behind her. He should be pushing off soon. I believe that Bella is up there with him. Hope her tummy is okay.
11:46 am on January 28th, 2012
Snowy and windy day here in the middle of the mitten. Mom has cleaned the kitchen and put a custard pie in the oven. She’s drinking her kawfee. I’m heading off for a nappy. snooz…
12:00 pm on January 28th, 2012
T&G Yes, there are stomach viruses that can affect the nation within a nation. Mushers have had to withdraw from races because of those viruses spreading quickly through their team.

Thanks for the photo, Melanie. Lots of SNOW!

Oh, I didn’t get to say happy anniversary to Dan and Zoe and happy birthday to Josh. So Happy Anniversary, Dan and Zoe! Happy Birthday, Josh! (Sorry I’m late!)
Last night Mom and Dad took my girl and my boy and his girlfriend out for dinner. (They had a gift certificate from Christmas for the whole family, so they wanted to use it while the whole family was still together — I want to know why I wasn’t invited. Aren’t I part of the family?) Then they took everyone to see the new Stephanie Plum movie, “One for the Money.” I don’t know if any of you have read the books, but Mom says some of the characters just weren’t the same as the ones she has in her head, so Dad and my girl — who haven’t read the books — enjoyed it more than Mom and my boy’s girlfriend — who have read the books — did. There were some funny moments, so Mom says it wasn’t a total loss.
Anyway, now that my girl is gone, Mom said something to Dad about having an empty nest. Huh? What am I, chopped liver???
12:19 pm on January 28th, 2012
Bee: I have a grammar question for you. Why do we say “We are, aren’t we?” and “He is, isn’t he?” but “I am, aren’t I?” Shouldn’t it be, “I am, amn’t I?”
12:34 pm on January 28th, 2012
Laughing here, Kirby T.
No updates that I can find. Anyone?
12:40 pm on January 28th, 2012
Kirby: “Aren’t I” is actually incorrect usage. It should be “am I not.” However, we are lazy speakers and “aren’t I” is apparently easier to say which is why it has become common.
12:44 pm on January 28th, 2012
Kirby: And I don’t know why “am” is never used in the form of a contraction when used as a question. Am’t is no sillier than isn’t….is it?
12:45 pm on January 28th, 2012
Bee: Well, if “are we not” has been shortened by you lazy humans to “aren’t we,” shouldn’t youse guys also have shortened “am I not” to “amn’t I”? I still don’t get it!
12:46 pm on January 28th, 2012
Oops! Bee, it looks like you were answering my question while I was still typing it!
12:47 pm on January 28th, 2012

From Facebook: Don Bowers Memorial Sled dog race
Aliy, Ryne, Justin, Dallas, Jerry, and Tamara Have all headed back south to Morgan`s and on back to eagle quest, where the 200 will finish and the 300 will have another 6 hour layover.
Okay, on the map from the web site (reposting it) you can see where Morgan Cabin is. I’ll try to find it on Google Earth, but?

Hi Plunderers! I am all better now (why doesn’t Mommy believe me?) They cooked me a most fabulous meal of hamburger and rice and I even got seconds an hour later. I am done sleeping, and ready for action but worry-wort Mommy will not let me out to play. Grrrrr
Rebecca, you need to go get a shot like I did. Then your belly will get better. And you need rest (just not this much rest).
Staff, we have all been discombobulated this week and we missed that you weren’t feeling good. Please take 2 kats and get plenty of rest and call me in the morning.
Someone please call my mommy and tell her a kat has got to play!
1:59 pm on January 28th, 2012
-50 this morning AND it is supposed to snow today. I can deal with the cold or with the snow but not both at the same time. Once when it was snowing at -60 I thought “isn’t there a point at which it is too cold to snow?” Not fair. Plus I am driving into Fairbanks this evening for a Capitol Hill political satire show. I already bought the ticket so I can’t chicken out. {{{brrrr{}}}}
2:05 pm on January 28th, 2012
C.Harris, I remember some weather forecaster talking about how cold it was once and he took a cup of water and threw it in the air. It turned into snow.
Don’t be throwing any water around! Movie … Glad you got out to play. Patsy and I are just about to go for a walk.

2:39 pm on January 28th, 2012
That was from Facebook, the website standings still have AJ at the layover.
So from what I can tell he’s third through the Morgan Checkpoint.
Here’s his standings on the web site.

Kirby and Bee, Barb says one of her kids (she can’t remember which one) used to say “I amn’t either!” when they were little. Worked for them!
Busy morning here, so just a quick check-in, then reading and nap. BBL
2:42 pm on January 28th, 2012
Here’s the official photo from the website (no photographer listed) that shows AJ at the start. I have done some magic with it. Hope they don’t mind.
2:56 pm on January 28th, 2012
Do they go by the elapsed time in the very last column? Because I think that shows AJ is in the l*e*a*d. (I don’t want to say it out loud lest I jinx him!)

Kat, You don’t need to start playing yet, but I am glad you are feeling better.
Kirby, I have hoped and thought the same thing about the you know what.
4:02 pm on January 28th, 2012
1/28 11:52am: Justin is through Morgans, followed by Jerry Sousa as our 200 leaders; Dallas Seavey is through Morgans running third in the 300. [Sunny and clear: Willow −27°F, Talkeetna −23°F]
Woooo Hooooo !
4:05 pm on January 28th, 2012
That was so not Kat posting the race update. As if she had that ability… She can’t even read the v-e-t’s orders that clearly state that activity is to be restricted for 48 hours, and strict leash walking is required.
Nope that was Sasha whose memory is failing.
4:14 pm on January 28th, 2012
Crap, it is 2 degrees *colder* than it was this morning.
Melanie….you can also boil a cup of water and throw it into the air at -60 and it evaporates before hitting the ground. If you wave one of those soapy bubble wands outside at -25, the bubbles become ice bubbles. When I am running late in the morning and have no time to blow dry my hair, I go out at -30 (or whatever) and freeze-dry my hair. If I have to wash a throw rug and can’t dry it in the dryer, I hang it outside over the porch rail and freeze it dry.
4:16 pm on January 28th, 2012
That is The Hot One’s photo on the avatar.
GO SNOWHOOK!!! I hope Rebecca is feling better today.
4:18 pm on January 28th, 2012
C.Harris, I read in the Anchorage newspaper that you are having one of your coldest winters on record.
4:20 pm on January 28th, 2012
We honestly don’t know how anyone could be feeling o.k. In those temps. We may be Sibes but we like a nice warm home when we go on break. And there does come a point when even we Sibes think it is too darn cold outdoors.
4:26 pm on January 28th, 2012
A brief reiteration: (my memory is failing me)
I wished all who are not feeling well to be feeling tip top asap.
Welcome back Rose. Rio’s friend saved the day.
SDD messages will be answered on Monday.
GO SNOWHOOK!!!
4:34 pm on January 28th, 2012
Oh My Dog, C.Harris. Freeze dried hair? Freeze dried rug? WEll, actually I do sort of remember stuff like that when reading my sci-fy. Putting things in vacuum, but maybe instead of the vacuum it was the COLD that did the cleaning!
KIrby T. is correct but I’m not going to jinx it either.
This in from the web site.
“From Ham Central re Steve Geiger:
Just wanted you to be aware that Steve Geiger informed us about great race sportsmanship! Jeff Hemann spent 6 hours with Steve while he was sick. Jeff refused to continue in the race until he knew that Steve would be alright! Steve convinced him to continue on, but he refused, watching in the trees and covering his headlamp monitoring Steve until he was able to continued on. He then reported Steve’s condition to the officials when he arrived in the next checkpoint! That’s a caring musher, who would sacrifice his place in the race for a fellow musher.”
Awesome!
4:50 pm on January 28th, 2012
Siber-H: Anchorage is having their coldest January on record. In our neck of the woods, we are having our 7th coldest January based on records dating back to the early 1900s. However, we are expected to move up in ranks by the time we reach the end of January. Of course, they use the Fairbanks Airport temp as the official temperature of the region and it has yet to reach -50 this winter. I’ve been -50 and lower a few times.
”
Question for Rebecca: I know that “giant” mushers like AJ are at a disadvantage speed wise in sprint races. Is there a disadvantage in the long marathon races?
4:51 pm on January 28th, 2012
Here is what Rebecca wrote on Facebook eleven minutes ago:
“Our timing was perfect; Handler Jeremy and I arrived at the Kershner checkpoint/layover shortly before AJ and team arrived in the ever so wee hours of the morning. Not able to assist AJ as he tended to the dogs, we helped race volunteers where we could and hope it eased their burden and fatigue.
AJ left the layover at 8:08 this morning and the team looked good as they left the layover; he left… the checkpoint in first place for the 200 mile heat. AJ has made it through the Morgan/Oil Well checkpoint on the return trip home. He plans to camp along the way.
After collecting our dropped dogs, Marco and Radley, Jeremy and I arrived home to our own dog chores—no rest for the wicked, weary, frozen and sleep deprived.
Before some much needed rest (and perhaps a slice of cheesecake) a big thank you to Handler Jeremy is in order. He co-piloted our venture, kept me awake, handled, and helped. Thanks!
My eyelids are getting heavy. That slice of cheesecake may have to wait…”
5:07 pm on January 28th, 2012
Plunderers! I am home at last. My stomach really started to bother me again last night, so I delayed my departure to the layover by 30 minutes. I couldn’t delay any further so I said a quick prayer that it wouldn’t trouble me while I was handling for the race; I couldn’t stand the thought of not seeing AJ and the dogs. He came into the checkpoint shortly after Jeremy and I arrived. The team looked good and AJ was happy with the run. One of the first things he said to me was that I look cute. This was unexpected—I was wearing my standard issue SK hat which has cute factors in it’s fibers—but given the -30 plus temps I was wearing my fleece union suit, pants and jacket made out of foam, insulated coveralls and my oversized mushing parka. Cute was the last thing I felt, but it made me smile.
Jeremy and I couldn’t help AJ with his chores, so we tried to help the race organizers/volunteers. Jeremy chopped wood for the bonfire, and I helped watch for incoming teams and helped check them in. The Boy Scouts were also volunteering so there wasn’t as much to do as in years past. AJ joined me by the bonfire and he dozed for 20 minutes. I gave him my parka to lay on so he’d have an extra layer between him and the snow.
He arrived at the layover in first place of the 200 mile heat and therefore left in 1st place. The team looked good going out. Elim has a song in his heart that is sung loudest when it is time to run; I also think it’s part of his race strategy to halt the rest of other teams.
One musher, Steve, had a run of bad luck. Medical issues hampered his race, yet he was helped by another musher that put Steve above his own race. His handlers ran off the road on the way to the layover. We would have stopped to help, but someone else had already stopped and our tow strap was in our other vehicle, and his truck got a flat tire as they waited for him to arrive at the layover. One of his dogs, a male, had his undercarriage frost bitten. We stopped at the nearest gas station and got him some fix-a-flat, but had to leave to collect our dropped dogs who were being snowmachined to meet us. He had to scratch. A scratch hurts. He is in my thoughts.
Jeremy and I arrived home and tended to the left-behinds-at-home. Feed, water, scoop, love.
Now, that I’m inside, the race stats show AJ going through the Morgan checkpoint on the return leg home in first place. They team behind him is not far behind him.
I haven’t slept since yesterday morning so will try to crash for a couple of hours.
Melanie: Thanks for staying on top of the race updates.
SiberH: Thanks for sharing your race knowledge with everyone.
Sleep cometh…

Before I completely drift off, YSAS and his fellow Young-Successful-Something-or-others are on my mind. Melanie mentioned that he was working with some folks on a big project. Snowhook is built on dreams and I want YSAS’ dreams to come true, too.
I’m heading to the center of the quilt for a bit. If I see YSAS and his fellows, I’ll share my cheesecake.

Hi, guys!! We missed quite a bit. Mom lets us read and sometimes post all week and then around Thursday, she is either too busy or too tired to let us on the computer. So…..
Happy Anniversary to Dan and Zoe! Many more to come. Melanie, LOVED the song. Looked at our pic of Franklin and we think he does look like a king…in a snowy kingdom.
Happy B-Day to Joshie. (Maggie, our Mom thought that he was quite the handsome guy) Loved the pics of the bike shop.
Rose, glad you are feeling better. The picture of your quilled roses was beautiful, so we imagin the real thing is spectacular.
Rio’s friend just keeps getting better and better.
Jasper, congrats on those pay bumps! Mom and Dad have forgotten what a raise looks like. But both are happy they still have jobs.
C.Harris, don’t know how in the world you do it.
Staff, be careful and take care of your bumps and bruises.
Wolfie, paws crossed and purrs for your boys. Hope the improvement is the beginning of a new life for them. We know that would make both your Mom and Dad very happy.
Kat, listen to the vet and stay calm for 24 more hours. Of course, that is like taking ALL the antibiotics even after you feel better…NOT.
Go, AJ and Snowhook!!! If what we read in an earlier post is correct, he took first in the race last year and is leading this year, and with a young team. This is so exciting. Don’t know how y’all do this. Mom read about the “outhouse” conditions to Dad, and they were both amazed by that. Mom is going to register for the Iditarod Insider right after we finish this post. How long does the Great Race take? Only 1 more month to go. Dad has 1 job this weekend. He is supposed to remind Mom to print a picture of us so Mom can mail it with a donation check to Rebecca! We’re going on the race!

Temps are in the low 30’s here, so we will not complain after reading CHarris’s posts. Hope she enjoys her evening out, and also hope Rebecca is feeling better.
Going out to do some quick chores, then in to keep up with the race and curl up to watch a movie.
Go A.J.!

My goodness – so much happens so fast when we aren’t looking.
Bella – we are sending you thoughts of peppermint tea and warm, fleecy bunny slippers. Our best prayers are for AJ and Company to cross the finish line safe, happy and FIRST!
This is very embarrassing. We had to get our bums clipped. This weird winter is playing havoc with our normal shedding season, and we had so many “cotton balls” coming off our flanks that they got all tangled up and messy when we tried to take care of business.
So Mama got out the clippers, and viola! We look worlds better. Now excuse us while we go chase those dam Kats who keep giggling at us.
BBL to see how the race progresses.
GO SNOWHOOK!!!

Mom says we on mini-vacation (whatever ttat mean…..)
6:18 pm on January 28th, 2012
Thanks for posting all the news, Rebecca, Stover, and Melanie!
Rebecca can get some much needed rest and recovery now.
Gus&BooBear, I’m going to look into your question and get back to you, but I know the answer is, No, you don’t have to join the ITC to be an Insider.
Your other question, How Long does the race take…it depends upon how long you want to follow those mushers and teams that are at the back of the pack. The leaders in the race will take around 9 or 10 days to arrive at the finish in Nome. It will take several more days for the middle and back of the pack (mushers and teams) to come in.
6:24 pm on January 28th, 2012
Standing picture:
Notice that AJ went out just under an hour before the next race dude!
6:28 pm on January 28th, 2012
Melanie!… snort!…Thanks for all the good updates. I’ve been drug all over today and haven’t been able to follow the race as close as I wanted to…sniff!…We are home and downstairs now. She is working on her next project and I will be checking the Standings page along with you….heh!….Is AJ running in the lead so far? It looks that way to me?….chuffle!
6:28 pm on January 28th, 2012
Gus&BooBear, On the Iditarod’s home page where it says “Experience the Iditarod as an Insider” click on that. Then in small print it says “subscribe today”. That is to be found in the log in box. When you click on the “subscribe today” is how you set up an account and join.
The Iditarod should make this process easier to locate on their website.

Mom and Dad are back! Unfortunately, Dad’s team didn’t too hot. Mom ran into a friend she used to work with, so she was a few minutes late getting to the game. When she walked in, the score was already 18-1 — and not in a good way! At one point it was 34-1. Luckily, the guys ramped it up a little in the third quarter — after Dad yelled at them a bunch in the locker room! — so the score at the end wasn’t quite as bad. But it wasn’t good, either!

I hope AJ makes up for Dad!

Our kind are in the top 4 Siber (we think). Besides, they are probably covering more ground. We do, when out with the ‘rents. No such thing as a straight line in this pack!
6:51 pm on January 28th, 2012
Riö, I believe you are correct in your thinking!
Siber-H: At least, your Slowberians look fantastic. Their makeup won’t run.

There is a great article on Yahoo’s network today for which we tried to create a link. For some reason, the site won’t let us do that, but the article was about those iconic giant white birds that haunt the Arctic. (sorry – can’t say the name of the birds – tradition forbids saying it for fear of calling them. Just think Harry Potter’s bird) There is a mass migration of the birds this year – scientists are baffled as to why they are showing up in Missouri, Arizona and right here in Massachusetts.
These things are over 2 feet tall! Thats a BIG bird.
If you want to see the article, you can go to the Yahoo home page and find the article in the news thumbnails.

We just had our first pork roast from the package that we ordered from Caw Caw Creek. The meat was amazingly better than any pork we have had. And they are certified humane raised and handled…a tough certification to get. Normally, we like to buy our meats locally, but we have been wanting to try Caw Caw Creek for a long time. It was definitely worth the wait.

SiberH, that’s what Mom was clicking on and it brings up the insider but the page is blank except for the heading. No login, no place to subscribe. Maybe Mollypop’s Mom can tell me what to do. Wonder if something is blocked.
7:30 pm on January 28th, 2012
Gus&BooBear, it comes up for me just like it should, so we do need technical help. Help anyone? Mollypop’s Mom?
7:46 pm on January 28th, 2012
Gus&BooBear, I found this: You need to have cookies enabled in your browser and don’t use Safari as your browser.
If we need to, I can come up with an email address for the Iditarod Insider.

Tracking!… I really miss the tracking feature during this race….grunt!…Wait, what am I saying? We didn’t have a tracking feature on AJ during the last race ….sniff!… I guess I just miss the tracking ability all together…grumble!
Where?….Where in the World is AJ and the Junior A-Team?….snort!…Does anybody know? Can anybody tell me where they are?…wuffle!
8:28 pm on January 28th, 2012
Oley, we are going to check out that site. Did you place a large order, like a quarter or half?
8:36 pm on January 28th, 2012
Where is AJ? I can’t stand this. I need a piece of cheesecake, but mom doesn’t like cheesecake so we have none.

GO SNOWHOOK!! WOO WOO
9:19 pm on January 28th, 2012
Had to take a phone call …
this just in from the web site
1/28 4:50pm: Justin is through Nowhere! At 4pm! He did in 5:31 incoming what took 7:53 outgoing. How can I forecast with differences like that? And Bob’s out of Morgan’s, dropping two dogs.
9:24 pm on January 28th, 2012
Okay, Jeremy Rutledge (also following the race) says he thinks it’s 30 miles out.
That means (whispering so no one gets jinxed) Justin is doing really well.
9:25 pm on January 28th, 2012
Now I really must needs to go to bed …
Run fast, run smooth, run safe Snowhook!
9:32 pm on January 28th, 2012
Ok – so now we can sit down and stay online to see what is going on with the race.
It sounds like Snowhook is showing them what dogsledding is all about. GO SNOWHOOK!!!

Okay, SiberH, after much ado and help from Dad, we are registered as Insiders for the Great Race. But it is really weird. We enabled cookies but the page still pulls up nothing but the heading. No login request or info. Have to scroll down to the bottom and click on sites to get the page. Maybe tomorrow, Mollypop’s Mom will help us to make sure all is done right. It finally took our credit card info, so we must be registered.
Go AJ!
9:43 pm on January 28th, 2012
Yawn…stretch…
So what did I miss? Oh, yeah, AJ and team were the first team of both the 200 and 300 mile races to reach and leave the Nowhere checkpoint. Nowhere is 30 miles somewhere from the finish line. He still has 14 dogs in team.
Charris: Was it your question about the advantage or disadvantage of a giant’s size? In either race, being less of a giant is good because it means the dogs have less weight to pull. AJ has often said he was my size to which I reply, “And, there are several times I wish I had the strength and stride of being 6’4″ and 200 pounds.” I have to mush differently than he does, becuase he can power the team and sled through difficulties that I can’t. He’s been loosing weight—about 16 lbs since the beginning of this season, so he now well under 200 lbs. There have been races in the past where teams have been caught in deep snow—waist deep on him can be armpit deep on others—and his height is certainly an advantage.
SiberH: Don’t box yourself in with your race watching menu. Last year, in a pinch—there was no Sara Lee in my grocer’s freezer section— I discovered that mini eclairs are satisfactory race watching fare as well.
Jeremy and I plan to leave the kennel and head for the finish line in about and hour to wait for AJ. He is making good time, and so far running an hour ahead of our predictions. I think he only camped for an hour when he originally planned to camp for two hours.
I don’t mean to brag but I have a pretty fierce Stormy Kromer / bed head combo going on right now. I’m not sure that I’d say it is a thing of beauty, but…
9:57 pm on January 28th, 2012
AJ did the 300 mile heat of this race as a qualifier for Iditarod in 2008. Below is a link to the photos from that year. Fargo, my main leader and the one that tolerated AJ (and AJ did the same of him) is the lead dog on the left of the picture. Tomboy, Fargo’s baby girl is the other leader in the picture—nothing like running alongside your paw.

Rebecca!…Someone here said I had to thank you for the neck gator that showed up in the mail …snort!…She says it is perfect and much better than that stupid long black scarf she wears every morning….heh!…She also told me she will write you a thank you email tomorrow when she isn’t so tired…heh!…She has no idea what tired is compared to youse guys….sniff! …Anyways, just know all arrived safely and is very much appreciated!…Wooooo!
Bed!…Head!…heh!snort!heh!

Rebecca, thanks for posting that photo. Great to see Fargo and the team.
Maggie, we knew you and Maggie would love Caw Caw. We ordered the “package” which is the equivalent of about a quarter pig.

Maggie, we knew you and Barb would love Caw Caw. We ordered the “package” which is the equivalent of about a quarter pig.

AJ is kicking butt!!!!! WOO !!!!!
10:11 pm on January 28th, 2012
Rio: I’m so glad the package arrived! I was worried that the goats had focused their attentions on you.
Jeremy and I are going to head to the finish line checkpoint in a few minutes. They have hot pork sandwhiches on the menu and I think Jeremy is hungry.
I will try to post if I can from the finish line. The race expects AJ to arrive around 730 AK time.
10:12 pm on January 28th, 2012
This is very exciting!
10:18 pm on January 28th, 2012
Pork sandwiches sound good, but did I mention I got pizza crust tonight? 🙂 Mom and Dad stopped giving me pizza crust when Those Girls were here, because we started getting in food fights. But now Those Girls are gone, and the crust is mine, all mine!!!!! (Insert maniacal laughter, thunder and lightning here!)
Oh, and GO AJ!
10:20 pm on January 28th, 2012
Gus&BooBear, Seems like you are now registered. If nothing else, you can send them an email to make sure. I don’t know why the site is being difficult for you.
Good idea, Rebecca, Mom likes eclairs. Thanks for posting the photo.
I am a nervous wreck. GO SNOWHOOK!
10:26 pm on January 28th, 2012
Mr.Husky,
Can you give me the name of the kennel that runs all Sibe’s again? I want to look at their pictures.
10:27 pm on January 28th, 2012
Oley, We knew what you meant the first time. And it does look very interesting. Seems like it works about to about $6 per lb with shipping. Right? We still have some meat left from our local guy, so keep us posted on some of the other cuts you try. When you order the package, they said it was about 50 lbs. Is it a misc. assortment, or do you specify thickness on chops, size of roasts, in other words, customize your order?
10:29 pm on January 28th, 2012
Oh, and Rebecca said 7:30 Alaska time, what time is that in the mid west?
10:34 pm on January 28th, 2012
I want to stay up to “see” the finish of the race, but everyone here is conking out. Mom and Dad had asked my girl to call them in the middle of the night last night to say she got to Clemson OK (she had to stop there to clean out her storage room), so they’re a little tired. My girl called again a little while ago to say she got to Nashville OK. I wasn’t worried about her at all, but you know how mothers are! So now I know Those Girls are really and truly gone. Now if I can just get rid of Those Kats. Hmmmm. Pondering here.
G’night, y’all!

Jeremy and I are at the finish line having pork sandwiches. Race officials are watching for a headlamp of a certain musher, but AJ has a nasty habit of running without a headlamp on.
11:07 pm on January 28th, 2012
Rebecca is at the finish line and can communicate with us!!!
WOO WOO
11:09 pm on January 28th, 2012
Finish Line!…snort! ….Pork Sandwiches!….heh!… I knew there was Ham involved in this race…chuffle!
11:20 pm on January 28th, 2012
Maggie, we got the assorted package, but you can order parts you want too. We got lots of bacon and sausage, which we wanted. He included all of the different types of sausage too. You will really like the owner. We called on the phone and he put us in the queue for when he would have some available. Then presto! On Monday Mom got an email from fedex saying it was on its way.
We had pork tonight, and so are Rebecca and Jeremy. Is that karma or what? Does that ever happen to you?
11:20 pm on January 28th, 2012
Rio? Are you staying awake for this?
11:23 pm on January 28th, 2012
Mr.Husky, Now you have learned the secret of how we send a link. We copy and paste the website address into our posts!
Can’t wait to see if Justin is first. Keep on Blogging Rebecca. Well after you hug the giant and take care of the dogs….
11:25 pm on January 28th, 2012

Wowzer!
They did it! They did it first! Way to go Snowhook Kennels! I just got home and whooooooooeeeee, this is great. Congratulations to AJ, Rebecca and Jeremy and all the doggies.
(And, by the way, guess who won at cards.) Heh. That’s right…me me me me. What a night!
1:28 am on January 29th, 2012
Who was on the winning team? Annabelle, Rory, Twig, Quig, Elim, Louisa Mae, Jesse and Frank, Fritz and Charlie, Abe, Garrett, and Orion. AJ carried Wyatt in the sled for the last 30 miles—Wyatt is resting well. Hugs have been given to all with a little extra squeeze thrown in at the request of Staff.
AJ is finishing up tending to the dogs’ paws and wrapping them in jackets. They’ve been fed a healthy dose of food and will soon be sleeping. I brought in extra firewood and have the fire stoked so AJ can get warm. It was -30 when he crossed the finish line.
My stomach? Well, the prayer I said worked. My stomach didn’t bother me again until we arrived home and I tended to the fire, and only then did it start to twist and turn. Maybe I should have save the pork sammich for later.
I fell earlier doing dog chores earlier today and landed on my bad hand. That pesky heart shape bruise has started to reappear and it is aching a bit tonight.
Thanks again for all your support and following the race. It’s nice to have company.
Kat: I’m glad you’re feeling better.
2:56 am on January 29th, 2012
Just on home myself. Congrats to our team!

There are also a number of additions that can go into a grilled cheese sandwich, like ham, tomato, herbs and spices, or sauces like ketchup or mustard. Some of these will go between the slices of bread before the grilling takes place, and some are sprinkled on the top or used as a dip. Many Canadians enjoy dipping their sandwiches in ketchup or applesauce, while people in the United States tend to prefer their sandwiches with tomato soup or French fries on the side.-
