No Post Today

“Why not?” says Spence.

“Because we have to research an important Xmas question,” Admin says, “one that probably goes all the way back to the pagan origins, at least in a metaphorical, or possibly Dickensian sense.”

“And the question is – can you deep fry a goose? Dickens invented modern Xmas by the way – along with Clement Clarke Moore.”

“Did you get enough sleep last night?”

Message to Dan: Sorry about your leg. Get well soon.

Christmas Carol is the only Dickens I like. And I’ve never had goose. Wonder how the C&B fifth novel is coming.

    Good morning all.

I actually cooked a goose once. Tasted good. Not a lot of meat. Well, actually there was more than enough for the goose, I had just been used to seeing store bought turkeys.

Thanks for the shout out Spence, Chet, Admin and all. Will let Dan know.

My sis and Zoe have just left for the hospital. I am still under the weather and will stay at home maintaining the level of luxury of which the Pack has become accustomed.

Mom says she’s never cooked a goose — although her goose has been cooked on more than one occasion. Huh? I don’t get it!

Melanie: I’m thinking a broken leg is better than a broken hip in the scheme of things — not that either is good. But is a broken leg near the hip worse than one down lower?

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Dan, and your family.

    Don’t forget to vote, Everybody.

I just went back and tried to catch up on yesterday’s posts. I’m amazed at the references to stick shifts and foot dimmer switches. Reading most of what had been written makes them sounds as though they were relics from the Dark Ages. The 50’s don’t seem so long ago to me. I do have to say that I remember them (the shift and the foot dimmer, not the Dark Ages), but in their last days. I still prefer the dimmer switch on the floor. So to all you youngsters out there and that includes most of you, I say, “When people talk about the good old days, they know what they’re talking about. Everything new isn’t necessarily ‘New and Improved”.

Went back and read Melanie’s post from last night. Glad, if there had to be a break, that it was leg rather than hip. Hope recovery starts today, and that he can be home for Christmas.

Barb says she cooked a goose once years ago. Mostly dark meat, and very greasy. Deep frying a turke is supposed to help with juiceness, but that really isn’t necessary with a goose. Pioneers used to use goose grease for all sorts of things, and you do get A LOT of grease when you roast a goose.

Did you know that the modern turkeys, which the wonderful American poultry industry has genetically altered, can no longer function normally? They can still walk to their feed and water, but that is about all. They have been bred to have such large breasts (because people like white meat better) that they cannot stand as adults, and they cannot breed naturally. They have gone the was of AI, if you know what that means. No PAR-TEE for the tom and hen. As TYB said earlier, modern is not necessarily better.

A million years ago, just as I was ready to take my driver’s road test, my father came home with a new car with a stick shift. A lot of teen-age drama ensued, but I finally learned how to drive a stick shift and got my driver’s license. After that, for reasons I don’t remember, every car I drove was stick shift. When I was in my 40’s I bought a new Corvette, gold with gold leather upholstery, and told the salesman that it had to be an automatic. He was stunned. I never went back to driving a stick shift car – enough was enough.

From the folks at Ducks Unlimited:

    Deep Fried Goose
large duck or goose, skin on 2 to 4 gallons peanut oil
Tony Saccherie’s Cajun Spice Mix 2 cups white or brown rice

    Outdoor propane cooker
    large “turkey-frying” pot

Wash and clean thawed goose. Place goose in pot and fill with water until goose is covered. Make a note or mark of where the “water line” is. Empty pot, dry it, and put peanut oil into pot until it reaches the “water line” you noted. Heat oil to 350 degrees. Rub goose inside and out with Cajun spice mix. Let it sit while the oil is heating.

Carefully lower goose into the oil. Cook goose approximately 5 minutes per pound, or until it floats. Carefully remove goose with long-handled utensils. Drain goose on paper towels and let sit for about 10 minutes. The whole goose should be moist and delicious, but the crispy skin is the best!

MM, When Barb was 16 her dad bought her an old 1954 dark blue Chevy bomb for $325.00 (they were asking $400). She wanted a 1956 or ’57, because they were cool, but also cost $600-$700. The car had a 3-speed column shift, and that button on the floor for the dimmer. She hadn’t thought about that old relic for years!

My dad fondly remembers his first car. It was an automatic (he had trouble with a stick, but learned to drive one in college because of a job he had; still prefers automatic although a stick can be helpful in snow) and a real classic, NOT. It was a 59 Studebaker hatchback stationwagon, which had belonged to his grandfather. Some idiosyncrasies as well including the best way to turn up the volume on the radio was to step on the gas. Mom’s first car was a Buick LeSabre, which she referred to affectionately as “Tank”. It was only missing the gun turrets to qualify. She had it in grad school in snowy Rochester, NY, for two years, and man could it drive through anything. It must have weighed about two tons. Perfect for Rochester and all that “lake effect” weather they had up there. Wookie

Mom tried to learn how to drive a stick on Grandpa’s car. They lived out in the country, so that seemed a perfect place to learn how. Mom came to a stop sign and obediently stopped, but then she couldn’t get going again — and two(!) cars pulled up behind her. She’d put it into gear and die. She’d put it into gear and die. They had to wave on the other cars. And it was quite entertaining for the farmer who was out plowing his field. He’d come to the corner where she was, then turn and do the long row, and then he’d come back and Mom was still sitting there. After a few rounds like that Mom could see him laughing when he got to her end of the field again — worse, he was the father of one of her friends. Finally, Mom and Grandpa changed places and Grandpa drove back home. Mom never tried a stick again!

Dan is resting comfortably. He has seen a cardiologist. The one Zoe doesn’t like, but he was on his best behavior. For the first time he was nice.
Dan’s pulse is high. 110 beats per minute. The cardiologist put him on another med that will bring that down.
He has broken his upper femur. The hospitalizes (YSAS’s favorite people) have said Dan will need an operation and Zoë won’t say yes until he’s seen the bone doc specialists and talk to the good surgeon who did all of Dan’s other operations about complications.

When Barb’s dad got that old blue bomb, they also had an “Anniversary Gold” 1958 Chevy station wagon (Her dad was a Chevy man). He traded that in on a Way-Cool 1961 Chevy convertible, white with aqua-blue interior. Now when Barb drove that, she thought she was something! When Barb’s little sis, who is 6 years younger, learned to drive, she also learned on that old ’54. She remembers that Barb had to teach her, because their dad did a lot of yelling over the shifting process.

Melanie: Our prayers joining the rest of the Plunderers that Dan heals quickly and will soon be home.

We have had duck which may or may not be the same as goose.

The dimmer switch was easy to operate. The gear shift took some getting used to. Nana’s second car was a German Opal Cadet…a cute little sporty model. She bought it from a co-worker, knowing zilch about driving a car with a standard transmission. Much laughter ringing in her ears as the gathering crowd watched her lurch down the street. Somehow, followed by a friend, she made it home and in the days and weeks to follow learned to drive her “new” car.

TYB: Once again, thank you for the reminder. I wonder if the other contestants have such a loyal little band of followers.

Snickering here. I put it that way so people would have a good time wondering.

Yes, I was doing the laundry when Jesse came in, grabbed the fire extinguisher, and said, “Oh, by the way, the lawnmower is on fire.”

He ran out and I followed first grabbing another extinguisher just in case. By the time I got out there the fire was out.

Jesse has nursed that mower all summer long in hopes that it would at least last the season. He was using it to gather the leaves and fallen apples. One time too many for the engine!

So we stood over the smoking remains, said we were glad we didn’t have to call 911 AGAIN, and pronounced it dead.

Told Zoe and Martha. They were in hysterics! Glad they got to laugh about something today.

    Siber-H! Congratulations on your snow!

Siber H: Wow! enjoy! I know you are in bliss.

Melanie, pt 2: do you ever do alternative healing? Years ago I was trained in Reiki techniques and I really believe they help in healing–not to replace doctors, etc but to assist the body in utilizing traditional medicine and to help the body into a healing mode.

I drove a stick shift until 8 years ago. My sister wanted me to teach her daughter to drive a stick shift while I was visiting–which turned out to be the longest week in my life as we stuttered around empty parking lots. I am so short the dimmer switch on the floor was awkward for me.

I grew up in a farming community where the legal age to drive was 14. Coach started teaching me how to drive at 11. We would go on drives looking for new put-ins for fly fishing so I learned how to drive pulling a trailer with a drift boat. The dimmer switch of that old truck was also on the floor, but I’ve been the same height since I was 10 so it didn’t give me any trouble.

When my older brother—my very popular older brother—got his drivers license he wanted a sports car. Coach gave him an old Ford Granada. He said it was to humble him a bit. The Beast, as we called that old car, had a faulty starter along with several other faulty parts. You had to have a certain ‘touch’ to get it started if it sat for too long. Only my father and I seemed to posses the ‘touch.’ There were several days when my brother would come over to my middle school (next to the Jr. high) and ask me if I could start the car so he and his friends could go out to eat.

Bluecat, Thanks for splainin that to me. I was so confused. I thought the book was coming from you, but when I saw Wookies dad’s name in there, I thought he had sent it. Now I am clear- I will send it on to him and not Bear. Started it already, and it is going to be fun. Think I may buy a copy for my granddaughter who is 12 1/2.

Rose: Under no circumstance is Belle Starr to use my debit card. Nope! I don’t care how cute or sparkly or must-have the item is. She hasn’t paid me back one nickle for the hockey tape she gave AJ last year for Christmas. I did send Luna with a visa gift card for emergencies, but she knows the rules. I also shared how Wolfie is still trying to work off his moments lapse of self control at the World Series.

I’m going to start stock piling root beer floats for B’s retirement party so we don’t run out again. Why do people laugh when I ask for a keg of root beer…?

Rio: Junior is not a spaz. He is a yearling. Only a few dogs are born old—Luna for one, and Fargo my main leader (deceased) for another. They all go through this stage. It is his first season and he is doing as expected. He doesn’t have huffle and gruffles with his neighbor, he has a good attitude and he likes to, what is the word?—Oh, yeah–RUN!

Melanie, It is fantastic news that Dan won’t have to have surgery! We hope you get to feeling better soon. Bad colds are miserable.

Rio, Since Junior comes from Buser lines, he could end up being a very speedy boy.
Please tell your friend not to stress about mailing the boxes. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we can wait. None of us are apparently giving them away to anyone for Christmas. We are keeping them!!

SiberH!….Nice of you to say “don’t stress” but my friend wanted to get them out early enough so everyone could give them as gifts if they wanted to….snuff!…You might change your mind when you “finally” get them. Your Ma may want to give them all way….snort!

Melanie: I am so glad that Dan does not have to have surgery. I hope you get over that cold soon…rest, fluids and chicken soup prescribed.

Rio: I guess Staff sent you my address. I was busy flying over the Rockies and the Cascades and making my way up to the border of Canada. Quilt and fan are still safe. Tomorrow I fly home. Are those huge boxes the little cards? That is going to cost a fortune to send up to Canada. Remember…surface mail only…I am not in a hurry because no one else but me is getting those cards…(and a little secret…they fly everything up to where I live anyway). Don’t write “fragile” on the box or they will poke it with sticks just to see if it really is fragile. And definitely don’t insure it or anything like that. We will never see it again if you do that. I will take responsibility for any damage that occurs if you follow those instructions. Since I will be paying for the postage could you please have them put expensive stamps on the package instead of an ugly metered postage sticker? I like value for my money.

When is this party going to happen. Is a date set?

Woo hooo ! A Party! We vote for the party to be at Stover’s house – that way there will be snow outside, but with Wolfie’s help, those who want to blur down to the Florida condo to warm up real quick will be able to.
(And that way, Bee’s pies can be hot out of the oven. Mmmmmm – hot pies with cold root beer floats….heaven…
Rio – we love a Christmas Carol too – fell in love with it at about 10 years old, and have most versions of the “real” story. We discount the Mickey Mouse and Susan Lucci versions.
Our favorite is the Alistair Sim version – his “redemption” scene where he celebrates his new vision is the BEST!
By the way, the show was very good, and Mama was very bad. She called in sick today since she can’t stand up or walk without being in terrible pain.(yup, she’s missing the “open house”) Sitting and laying down are the only pain free options. But she is going to see Melanie’s magic man with the needles tomorrow, so she will be feeling tip top after that.

You all are welcome at my house anytime, but we are going to have temperatures way below normal for the next week. It would not be a party in the warm desert. The weather is going to be fit for only me, the Howlers, and the Snowhook gang.

Siber – Mama doesn’t seem to be having any say in whether she goes to CLL or not. Dad called the CL this morning, and told her in no uncertain terms that Mama wouldn’t be there today, and most likely not tomorrow.
Mama says we’ll see what the needle man says. (we think she will also check and see if there are any good Christmas movies on tomorrow daytime. She is a sap for Christmas movies)

I don’t like a Christmas Carol much. The Guthrie theater puts it on every year. I love watching Miracle on 49th Street. The original one! By the way I found the book in a used bookstore and bought it. Cute book.

Sob, it is in North Dakota though so I can’t read it again.

    Speaking of books…
The good reviewer a few days ago mentioned Donald Westlake and his Dortmunder series and Liza Lutz’s Spellman Files as being comparable to Chet the Dog. Well! I have always adored Westlake to pieces. So I downloaded the first Spellman files from Amazon and gobbled it up. She is hilarious. So now I have a few more funny books to read. That was a very useful review.

Macy, of course it isn’t too late to order toffee. Don’t forget to email your address to mary (note: there is no space between “Mary” and “a” but I can’t convince the ipaw otherwise.

Hurrah! Dan doesn’t need surgery. He seems to have a thing about spending the weeks leading up to Christmas in the hospital.

Party! Sounds like fun! I am going to bring some figgy pudding. Once I figure out what the heck it is.
