    Only a title?

I’m going to try turning in only a title for my first assignment with Prof. B.Stover. How do you think that’ll go over?
B.Stover: Our Tigers didn’t do so well yesterday. Today is the day they will show their stripes!
I have been called in to work for a long shift. Someone needs to hire more staff. Enjoy the day!

No post today…and no reason given? Do you think they stayed out too late with Melanie?
    Good morning, B and Dawson.

Hi Bee. Hi Dawson. Hi OHs. Dad and The Boy went to the ND game last night. The Boy, ND class of 99, was pleased. Dad, Purdue grad, not so much.

Warm thoughts to all who are not so well, and have a good week, Everybody.

    Morning B., Dawson, and OH:

No post today?!? Maybe SQ is too busy signing all of Mealnie’s photos. Hope you’ve had a good rest, Melanie, ’cause I can’t wait to hear the 411!!!

Dawson: Sorry, but I am twirling and skipping over my boys, the Yankees! I just hope AJ isn’t pitching today, because that would certainly guarantee a Tigers win.

Rebecca: Hopefully Belle Starr doesn’t get overly excited too often! 🙂

Dawson: My twirling has turned to heartbreak…

There is a nasty rumor circulating that the most beloved manager of the Yankees, Joe Torre may be approached to become the next Red Sox manager! The absolute HORROR!!! Say it ain’t so, Joe.

Bluecoat, good thing your dad and the boy were at the game, and not home with you. That could have been ugly. Mom’s cousin went to a wedding in South Bend yesterday. The groom is a Purdue fan and was talking smack to Mom on Facebook. LOL We think his wedding night might not have been too great after the way the Irish tore them apart!

Aww Rose, For Torre to go to the Red Sox seems wrong. I know how Rio and I felt when we lost Ubaldo this summer and that was just a pitcher. I’m sympathizing with you.

Spence deserves a day off. I hope he does something fun today.

    Good Morning, All.
I hope everybody is doing better healthwise today and that you don’t have to go to Vegas, B. The “good” news from here is the fact that we actually had some snow lying on the ground this morning. Though I live in a ski area, I still think October 2 is way
too early for the white stuff. We haven’t had fall yet, but here in the mts of PA we
frequently skip fall and spring. We’re either HOT or Cold. To me the best thing about winter is the fact that spring or summer will come next.

O.Howlers: Bluecoat (lol) a smile to start the day. Hope your Shiek is getting better. How is your mom’s bee sting?

B: I hope your brother is doing much better today. We continue to send healing thoughts his way.

#2Son has improved. Nana talked to him this morning. They have now started him on liquids and will begin solid foods in 24 hrs. Praying all tests come back showing nothing serious. So far, so good.

Can’t wait to hear from Melanie! It must have been some visit they had with SPQA since there is “no post” today.

My brother is having more tests. They still don’t know the cause of the bleeding. I talked to my SIL this morning.

    11:57 am on October 2nd, 2011

Bear: I’m glad #2 son is doing okay. Keep us posted.

Stover, 411 means information…as in, “I’ll give you the 411”.

All paws with prayers crossed for Nana’s son and Stover’s brother.

The rumor about the Yankee’s manager going over to the Sox (otherwise known to you as the Darkside) is bad news for Yankee fans for sure, but I can see smiles on the faces of Red Sox followers. What a coupe that would be! I love the history of the Yankees, but have always been partial to Red Sox. Yes, I know… tough words to hear from your good friend.
Tyb: Wow snow! Same as CHarris. It is way too early for me to even think about.

Okay, I’m here . . . barely! We are not the fault of no post today. We went home right after the signing. Two hours away for us is a long way! Luckily, YSAS did ALL the driving. We kept him awake. This morning we left the house at 7:15 to get him to the train at 9:00 am. Then I drove home, picked up ZoĂ« and we drove 30 minutes the other way and took the car back. Then came home and I completely crashed. I have just gotten up!

So first here is the small set up they had at the front of the store.

  40. Melanie
    3:18 pm on October 2nd, 2011

We got there an hour early. Love bookstores. So we wandered around and had a great time. When the time approached we found seats (front row of course) and waited. Spencer came in and for some reason they were waiting, so I introduced myself (hmmm, he knew who I was, laughing here) and then introduced him to Dan, Zoe and YSAS. What a gracious guy.

Then he had to talk . . .

  41. Melanie
    3:31 pm on October 2nd, 2011

I listened very carefully, took notes and laughed! So let me try to decipher my notes . . .
First, he does Not like to read from his own reviews. He said he was on a panel of writers (at this point he digressed and said you should never put writers on stools in front of people either they can’t sit still or they’ve had a drink and it’s just not good) and one of the writers was quoting from their own reviews. Spencer knew this was JUST NOT DONE! And then he told us a review that someone gave his books.

Very nice and well done. He is a good speaker.

    He told his puddle story.

He talked about the the 5 paragraph essay system is now taught and how that stifles people. YSAS was laughing in agreement there.

His writing for school was before the 5 paragraph essay and when he would finish it he would leave it on the kitchen table so his mother could read it. She was a writer and helped him realize that adverbs and adjectives are not that important. She also didn’t like connecting words. One of the main things she taught him that the power house words are the nouns and the verbs.

He still leaves his writing on the kitchen table so it can be read. When he was writing the Echo Falls series

Alice, that is hilarious. SiberH, you have to try again to open the link, you will LOVE it. I like the way he is casually chewing on the ivy.

Melanie, we did not have to intoduce ourselves. Spence saw mom and GandBB’s mom and hopped right up. Of course there we only a few people there at the time, so their tags showed up easily. Wasn’t he great??? Not at all what mom expected of a famous-Stephen King likes-him, best selling authors. No tweed in sight. Can’t wait for more details.

Oh boy, details instantly. We like it.

  44. Melanie
    3:42 pm on October 2nd, 2011

A few other things that were cool.

Spencer picked the “Valley” for the setting of the books because he wanted Chet to have the urban connection and still have the wild steps away.

Some one asked him why he wrote. He said he was good at two jobs: writing and free dive spearfishing. He did the second during after college, but since you have to hold your breath down to 80 feet at his age now he thought he best stick to writing.

Why the 1st person? None of his other books (except the new Robbie books coming out) have been in 1st person. He always thought that would be easier for him to write. It is. He’s been “Calvinistic” in his approach to writing. lol

Dan asked if he uses a white board like Bernie does. He doesn’t. He doesn’t think he’s cheating if he goes back through the manuscript! He also loves the find / replace on the computer. He does not like spell check.

Typing? He does not know touch typing. Enough said.

The next book in the series? Probably in September thought the Publishers keep upping the date.

  45. Melanie
    3:47 pm on October 2nd, 2011

We then moved to the signing area. For some reason the storeowner thought Spencer was there to sign books. Shaking head here.

I did wait until everyone was done and then we had a grand time talking. Dan gave him the LAST copy we had of “White Wings”. I had gotten one from Amazon, but when we opened it? Markings all over the title page. So Dan went up into the attic and found one more copy . . .

Melanie: Wow, way cool! Sounds like a great event, and a great time had by all!

Dawson: You are just too funny. A good cry does sometimes clears the boogey-nose. (As the Prof and I call it)

Rio: Thank you for the update. Clocking in at 16 hours, 5 minutes. No new pictures?

Masquers: The Prof told me this morning the reason I don’t want Torre to go to the Darkside is because, he’ll turn the team into a great team like the Yankees….SOBSOBSOB

  47. Melanie
    3:51 pm on October 2nd, 2011

Diane, Peter’s wife, (not sure what she was doing going to a signing with Spencer Quinn, lol) is wonderful. She did not want her picture taken.

YSAS talked to Spencer about the Indie and how they are going to be filming it. Very much like a Peter Abrahams book. Those where you don’t always know who the nasty guy is or what they are going to do . . .

I had a grand time. A few other things . . . Spencer talked about how writing this series has gotten him interested in animal welfare. In fact, there was a no kill shelter who was helping to sponsor him to be there. I had brought a collar for them. Too small for our dogs and very pretty, i knew they could put it to good use.

The pictures he’s signing for us. It was late. There were a lot of pictures. He took them with him and will be sending them to me to send out. As he put it he can take his time and make them look nice.

He really loves the quilt. It means a great deal.

Oh, and here’s our picture. We were still talking. (Can’t shut me up) YSAS did take another one but it was out of focus.

I arrived home in the wee hours of the morning after taking AJ to the airport. I was caught in a down pour on my drive home and was exhausted.

While single-parenting 48 dogs this morning, I was hopeful that I would come inside and have the play-by-play from Melanie. Excellent! It sounds like the two-leggeds of the Newf Pack had a great time and that our favorite author is very gracious. I’m glad that the soon to be famous YSAS was able to do the driving.

Rose: I begged my two-legged mama not to spill the beans about me tossing my cookies, but did she listen? No! Did she mention that it was her fault? Again, no! She got me so excited with the prospect of a belly rub and a hug at the same time. I lost myself and my breakfast in all the excitement. It doesn’t happen all the time.

I need to get back to watching over her. She keeps mumbling to herself about locking doors and asking, “What am I twelve?” I think she’s lost it.

Oh, I forgot. Spencer and Diane drove up from the Cape that morning. He had gone swimming in the morning. So he dressed for the weather down there. Heh, heh, heh. Notice all of us have on sweatshirts. It was raining and in the 50’s in VT.

Whoops, noticed I didn’t finish the Echo Falls thought. My sister called and I hit submit . . .

To go back “He still leaves his writing on the kitchen table so it can be read. When he was writing the Echo Falls series . . .” his daughter that was of that age would take a pen (everyone else used a pencil) cross things out and add dialog. If he liked it? He’d use it!

    I LOVE those leaves.

Gosh Rio, if I had only known I could have sent you one of those tools for your friend to use. They ‘gave’ me one when I was in the hospital getting my new kidney last year.

Although it has sentimental memories for me I would give it up for such a good reason.

PS I have no idea how that works. Do you stuff the paper into the narrow little grooves on the tool? Does it make different sizes depending on the groves spacing?

FINALLY – We have been begging Mama ALL DAY to put the ‘puter on so we could read about Melanie’s adventures with Spence. But she is just so selfish – gotta work on clay, gotta get ready for the show….yadda yadda…jeeze, you might think this show was important or something.

Melanie – fabulous pics and reports. Wish we could have been there too but its cool that your Pack had Spence all to yourselves (kinda)

Macy – not to be indelicate, but how is your drooling problem, my dear? Did it stop after you were away from the dogpark? We have heard that when a dog suddenly starts drooling a lot, you should make sure they don’t have something caught in their teeth or under their tongue, as that can make the drool thing happen too.

Bee – we will keep sending the good thoughts out for your brother.

Rose – we have heard that some warm brandy with honey and lemon is a wonderful tonic for a cold – and if it doesn’t work, you just don’t care anyway. Mama also likes to chew on a little bit of candied ginger to break up the congestion.

Rio – still hoping to see the new fancy-schmancy leaves

Sorry, we just can’t get too worked up about who works for what baseball team. We just don’t care that much. Our local newspaper yesterday had a banner headline that said “The Nation Mourns”. Oh puh-leeze….

But we do hope that everyone who was’t feeling well is better (Belle Starr included) And everyone who is healthy – please stay that way.

And someone turn off the dam rain machine here in the Northeast!

Hi everyone. Sorry for the absence!

Wolfie, you’re a sweetheart, Cricket is fine. In fact, she’s REALLY fine. We saw a doggie naturopath last week and she has all sorts of new supplements and special foods and the treatment is going very well, she seems to have more mobility and her tummy is great.

Melanie, thank you for the terrific reportage. My connection is too slow so the pics aren’t loading. Very frustrating.

I hope everyone’s people are better today, it’s great to see #2 son is going well, Nana. Thoughts for you and your brother B.

Rio: Those leaves are beautiful! Is your friend planning to sell her projects in the Musher Mercantile Store or is she making them for gifts?

Alice: That Husky picture is so cute! Thank you for going to all the trouble for those of us who couldn’t open the link.

WW, the supplements are boswellia complex for the inflammation, plus a thing called tissue regenex to help with rebuilding bone and muscle and stopping the body from attacking itself. Slippery elm for the tummy. She now eats BARF (!), Biologically Appropriate Raw Food – do you have that there? Plus pureed vegie patties i make up. We are sure that we are sitting here talking to ourselves, but Mama is finally giving up on her working for the night.

Yes, she does love every minute of her clay time. Every little aspect. So, she is just waiting to see if the crowd at the big art show likes her work. (whispering – she and Dad talked it over, and if her work is a “hit”, she is going to leave Crazy Lady Land, since she just got accepted into the big show spring version. If customers don’t buy….well, she will just have to put up with CL a little longer)

Bee – Rio’s bone theory made us remember – we had a friend who was in the hospital for bleeding like that. Turned out she had swallowed an apple seed; it was very hard and scratched her insides before it passed thru. We are truly hoping for that same kind of scenario for your brother.

Its been kind of a long day here. Our Grampa’s dearest friend passed away very suddenly. Mama really loved him too – he told the WORST jokes you ever heard. She went to the wake with our Gramp; something she normally would never, ever do. But she really wanted his family to know that she loved him and will miss him. This man’s family was lovely – he was 94, and was sitting out in his garden having coffee, and he just slipped away. Can’t ask for better than that.

Anyway – we want Mama to go to bed. She is working day and night – the show is this coming weekend. She is excited and nervous and happy and nervous and anxious and nervous – well, you get the picture. So g’night everyone. See ya tomorrow.
