No Post Today (Revised)

“Real busy,” says Admin. “Health plan renewal time. Those new rates! Don’t get me started. Plus Spence has to touch base with a few people to get the Snowhook thing coordinated on the New York end.”

Is this about Alaska? Don’t know where that is, but Bernie wants to go real bad. I wonder if … and then just like that I forget whatever I was wondering about. Does that ever happen to you?

New York end? The publisher may be getting involved. Interesting. Good morning Chet, Kirby and everyone.

Good morning, Bee! Is the publisher really getting involved? Or is Admin just dangling that so we’ll get all excited and forget — once again — about Astrid?

    Good Monday Morning to Everyone!

Chet, I forget what I’m wondering about all the time!

Did anyone see the news story this weekend about the dog that had 18 puppies…the puppies were adorable!!!

  5. Kirby T. Penworthy
    9:33 am on March 28th, 2011

Mom says they’d have to be adorable to make momma dog forget about what she just went through! Personally, I have no experience with such things, so I’m not sure what she’s talking about!

Rebecca wrote this on Facebook six hours ago:

“Claiming to be the sensible one, AJ banned Rebecca years ago from going to Animal Control or pet rescues alone. Yet, somehow and the details are fuzzy, or furry in this case, we are welcoming a new member to the kennel!

Shortly after returning from Nome, AJ left for a 4 day work trip and is returning tonight with a new lead dog. Based on a short phone call her name is Zepy and she’s a love…”

Rose, don’t know how they are going to do 16, it was hard enough with 12 last time . .

    NEW DOG! Love it, Snowhook.

    Good morning!

Have the check made out and taking it to the Post Office later this morning. Looks like Admin and Spence and maybe the publisher will get involved. We will have Whitey covered in no time!

When Macy said she went to the vet’s to get “improved”, did that mean so she wouldn’t have 18 puppies?

Thanks for the reports from Facebookie, Stover. Facebookie is a new word I learned fom Rio, but mom says it is a better word than some I have learned from Rio.

New lead Dog, huh? That is way cool and I hope we learn more about her in time.
In case some of you haven’t found this yet on Snowhook’s blog, Whitey is not a lead dog. He runs as a wheel or team dog. Rebecca says that when they tried Whitey in lead, “it wasn’t pretty” I would have loved to have seen that.

Chet, old pal, please keep us informed about New York and Snowhook.

We will watch Newf videos on youtube Melanie.

Good morning Everyone: A sunny, warm day off. House cleaning will be involved.
Melanie: Those Newf videos sound like fun for us…but won’t it be work for you?
Kirby T: No, no Mondays with Astrid. It’s been so long now that your Astrid Case Chart is buried somewhere in a “safe place”. I think it should be re-filed under “Cold Cases”.
Snowhook Kennels: AJ brings a new lead dog home named Zepy. Zepy probably gave AJ one longing look and a lick and AJ was smitten.

Stover, other than refuse to take the lead, I don’t know what Whitey could have done that “wasn’t pretty”. Maybe Rebecca will tell us sometime.
There are many sled dogs that just do not want to be lead dogs, These dogs are perfectly happy being part of the team.

New York getting involved in Snowhook? Wonder what that is all about. Something to do with Admin?

Wolfie:Isn’t that Bernie? But we certainly can’t count Spence out. Looking forward to those videos on YouTube, Melanie!

Melanie!….Hold off posting any photos of Whitey till we know what Rebecca is up to!…sneeze!….How exciting this is!! Is everyone as excited as I am?….woooooo! ….And baseball starts this Friday. I feel like I am going to explode with excitement….snorkel!

    After two weeks of +35 and +40 in the afternoons, people started putting away snow shovels and winter gear. I myself washed my winter coat and put it deep in my closet. I’ve been opening doors and windows to let in the fresh air and sleeping with my window wide open. Last night I couldn’t figure out why the room was so chilly. Then I found out winter had returned with 4″ of new snow. I felt like I should apologize to my co-workers for washing and putting away my winter coat but a fellow teacher said that he had washed and waxed his car this weekend so I will let him take the blame for jinxing our weather. I always fall for these “false springs” even though I know we aren’t safe from snow until the end of May (and 3 years ago it snowed three days the first week of June). {{{sigh}}}

Hi everyone – Mama is gong to have to leave in a few minutes to go work for the Crazy Lady. She doesn’t much want to go out- there is some kind of pollen that has just popped and its very windy. If she stays in the house, she’s pretty good. But ehen she goes outside, she sneezes and sneezes and sniffles and snorts. She kind of sounds like a Pug!
Barb – Mama says that if you would like to come early on Wednesday, you could help roll the cheese and chutney balls. The Pack is coming to help set up tables – ummmm, maybe it would be better if you jut come early and “supervise” – that way maybe there will be enough crabcakes for everyone else to get one.
And Rio – Mama says if you aren’t nice to our Wrotten Kats, she might not let you take any leftover Hot Wings for Baseball night.
Talk to you all later – off to the nutty place.

Dawson, you may be correct in guessing what Whitey did when he was put in lead. I’m laughing picturing it, but mom says that as a Husky “owner”, it is not funny. I think it is.

Me too, Rio, I think this is very exciting and so is the start of Baseball Season!!! This calls for a lot of Woo Woos.

Rio, We did that – just included a little note mentioning that we were from Chet’s blog, etc.

Has anyone tuned in the eagle cam today? Last week there were around 8,000 to 9,500 live viewers, now today there were almost 16,000. Eggs should start hatching this week. If you look at it, notice the dead bunny laying on the left side of the nest. Never saw that before. Wonder if they are chilling some food for the wee ones when they hatch. Should be fun watching them shred the Easter Bunny!

Hi Rebecca, just having nine dogs keeps us busy. I can’t imagine the poop patrol you guys have going on.

Taking videos or pictures is fun for me. In fact, I love doing that and working on photoshopping. No problems, mate.

Speaking in “Aussie” reminds me, have we heard from LizF lately? Did I just miss her?

This is just such terrific news and welcome to Rebecca. I had a good day too, chemo treatment number 6. My back had been bothering me a lot last week, but I also saw my acupuncturist today and I am doing a whole lot better now (actually I was doing better even before, but that always helps a lot too). Even took a nice little walk this afternoon with mom and dad. My dad will mail a check tomorrow from his busy place (that’s where he will mail it from; the check is from us, not from the busy place). My mom and dad are both in the pro-brussel sprout camp, by the way. Actually, they just like them steamed, nothing fancier than that (although maybe a spot of balsamic vinegar on the side). Looking forward to Wednesday night’s dinner and the start of baseball season. Wookie

We are in the pro-brussel sprout camp also and steamed is fine with us. Tupper and Gilly don’t dare serve any, though, because there was such anti-brussel sprout hysteria on the blog.

That is funny that you mentioned vinegar with the sprouts. Barb says her Mom used to fix them that way many, many years ago. Didn’t know that other people liked them like that. We are pro-sprout. Barb grew them 2 years ago, and she couldn’t even give them away!

I can’t remember if I’ve told this story. If you read it before just skip this comment.

A friend of mine was talking two large males Newfs during the winter. While going down her snowy driveway (very long), the males saw a deer. The deer saw them. The deer ran into the woods. Did I mention my friend is only 5 foot 2 inches? Walking two male Newfs? Each weighing more than she does?

    Off the Newfs went . . . Down went my friend . . . She didn’t let go of their leashes . . . A musher without a sled!

She was pulled all the way down the driveway . . . Until . . .
    Each went a different around a tree . . .

    She still didn’t let go.

Now why does this remind me of what could happen if Whitey-Lance leads?

  51. B.Stover
    7:32 pm on March 28th, 2011

Melanie: That is a good explanation about Whitey as lead. Now I’m wondering what happened to your friend.

  52. Siber-H
    7:51 pm on March 28th, 2011

Melanie, Your friend did what every experienced musher knows to do….never, ever, let go of the sled, or in your friend’s case, the leashes. Sled or leashes, these stories often end at a tree.
What did happen to your friend? I think it might have been in last year’s Iditarod that a musher was knocked out for about 30 minutes after flying into a tree. There are so many stories like this from the trail.

Zebbe…that is cute and I bet she is cute .

Hi everyone – HI Rebecca and AJ and Whitey-Lance and Zebbe! So glad you checked in on the blog. We already feel like you are family, so its great to have you here. Be prepared for teasing, interesting factoids, gardening tips, baseball cheering and lots of snorting and sniffling from a certain Pug.
We hope to learn more about Siberian Huskies from Snowhook – Siber keeps us chuckling with tails of his exploits and “obedience trials”. Are SH’s really so hardheaded?
To all diners coming on Wednesday – remember, this is just the gathering time, just little snacks and appetizers. The dreaded brussel sprouts may appear later in the dinner….they do go so well with prime rib…..

Poor Riö . . . (aside: I should have KNOWN Riö was an Aries!)

My friend was bruised but nothing broken. Having Newfoundlands can be about being bruised. Another friend who trained her Newf for water work (he is now a WRD, water rescue dog) always had bruises. The dogs tend to bump into you when you are training them, and even though you are wearing a wetsuit, OW! She went to the hospital for something else entirely and they thought she was being abused and called the police.

Not easy to explain that dogs can cause big bruises like that.

Okay, time for me to go up. The whole 4 and 2 legged Pack is looking forward to Wednesday’s feast and recipes.

T&G Snowhook doesn’t have Siberian Huskies. Their dogs are Alaskan Huskies. Alaskan Huskies do have some Siberian in them mixed in with hounds, pointers, and whatever else makes for a good long distance sled dog. Whitey actually looks to me like he may have more Siberian in him than most Alaskan Huskies.
If that is true, that may explain why he wanted to take a four day vacation last year.
I don’t know if Alaskan Huskies are as hardheaded as Siberians, but yes, every word you read about Siberians being stubborn and hardheaded is true.

    Woo Woo—Looking forward to Wednesday!!!

Check sent to Snowhook with a note to put it towards the Chet’s Blog Plunders acct.

Was reading some of Rebecca’s stuff on her log & have a few questions maybe Siber-H can answer.

Who will be the two dog “leaders” in next Iditerod (I know one of them won’t be Whitey). She uses some terms & I don’t know what they mean. “Leader” I guess is 2 dogs at the front. Swing, Wheel, Team, Gang Line are some of the terms. I think she said Whitey’s position was Wheel. We all are going to be experts on the Ititerod aren’t we? Thanks to Siber-H who started all this.

    Thanks for the explanation Wolfie!

Woof! You too, Rio, I am aware PA is the author of the Ingrid/Echo Falls series plus several mysteries. I thank you for your help. Being new, sometimes I can use the expertise of those more knowledgable.

Stover!… I will try, but some things really bug me and I get all riled up…grunt!… I think just saying nothing is best sometimes….sniff! …I will try to say nothing in regard to the whole Quacky Blog Tour as some just don’t “get it” and also about the New York connection to Snowhook as some just don’t “get it” …(((sigh))))

Hey Bear Spirit Dog – don’t even worry about it. Gilly and I And our Wrotten Kat roommates Basil and Sage) are all kind of newbies to the blog too and have to ask questions now and then. Heck, Rio won’t even let us compete in the Dog Talent Show at our big dinner party cuz he says we are “too new” to the blog. But let us pass along some advice to you that one kind blogger soul passed on to us when we first jumped in….”pay no attention to that grumpy pug behind the curtain”…..
    (We’re glad you’re here)

And Siber – thanks for the info on AH’s vs SH’s – we’re learning quite a bit from you. Next year at the race, we will be able to follow along with the experts.

Hey, y’all! I’m back! And just to change the subject — because it seems it can use some changing! — choose a book based on the author’s gender? Mom came home from work today and was telling us about one of her co-workers, who was looking at a pile of new Advanced Readers Copies. She looked at one and said the author’s name, then added, “Well, there’s one strike already.” When Mom asked if she didn’t like that author, the co-worker said she just doesn’t like reading books by men if she can help it! It’s not like she reads romance novels by women, she reads “literary” novels, mysteries and more. She’s the second one of Mom’s co-workers who has said that. Mom is just flabbergasted! She loves many male writers, such as Lawrence Block, Bill Pronzini, alan Bradley, Aaron Elkins, jonathan Kellerman, John Hart, Steve Hockensmith, Jefferson Bass — who is two men writing as one — and Spencer Quinn and Peter Abrahams — who is (are?) one man writing as two!

So let’s hear from you — do you ever read/not read books based on the author’s gender? Or even take that into consideration?

    9:28 pm on March 28th, 2011

Hi Cousin Kirby – we think choosing books based on gender makes about as much sense as refusing to eat a homegrown heirloom tomato because it isn’t red, round and perfect. Or not wanting to eat a brown egg, cuz it looks dirty.
How can you tell if the inside is good unless you crack it open?

Whitey!….Hey everybody! Bear, are you listening?.,…heh!… Here is the photo Rebecca sent us to post of Whitey….snort!snort!… She said, “This picture was taken at the end of the Ceremonial start this year in Anchorage. AJ picked W.L. up to give him a hug, thank him for staying with the team for the first eleven miles of the race and reminded him that there were still many miles that lay ahead.”…wheeze!…This photo has a lot of meaning for the Snowhook team…gruff!

Mollie, We don’t yet who will be the leaders on Snowhook’s team. We can all keep our paws crossed that Zebbe will shine as a leader.
Yes, the two dogs in front are the leaders, the two dogs behind them are the swing dogs, the dogs behind them are the team dogs until you get to the two dogs right in front of the sled and they are the wheel dogs. Whitey has been both a wheel dog and a team dog.
The gang line is the long line stretched out from the front of the sled that all the dogs are hooked into…the wheel dogs to the leaders.
I hope this makes sense. A nice little diagram would have worked better.

T & G Thanks for the good words about our tomatoes and eggs. We will see you Wednesday evening.

And Bear, Rio likes to give all the newbies a hard time. Pay no attention and ask as many questions as you wish. If you don’t ask questions, how do you learn? Just ask Barb. Kirby, yes, mom has a general prefernce when it comes to chosing a book based on gender but she doesn’t want to say anymore than that because it would incriminate her. She pleads the Fifth.

Kirby, Yes, mom will choose a book based on an author’s gender, but she won’t let me say anymore than that.

SiberH: Yes, the Huskies are still in the basketball thingy! They’re in the Final Four! Their next game will be this Saturday at 8:49 (Eastern time). The Connecticut Huskies will be playing the Kentucky Wildcats — yes, more Wildcats! Earlier in the day, the Butler Bulldogs will be playing the VCU Rams at 6:09 — where do they come up with these times??? I’m thinking that since we don’t like marauding goats, rooting for the Rams is out of the question! Go Butler Bulldogs!!!

The winners of those two games will meet on Monday night for the championship.

Kirby T. Penworthy: If the subject of the book was menopause, or something gender specific, I might want to have it written by a woman, otherwise, not so much.

Siber H: Thanks for that explanation of the lead, the swing the team and the wheel dogs. We sure are lucky to have you to explain the ins and outs of dog sledding.

Sorry to stir up a hornets nest earlier. Just thought a cute form or attachment to send with the checks would pop to Rebecca that the check came from one of Chet’s blog. And keep from having to re-write the info each time someone sends a check. Guess Mom’s just lazy that way. Sooooooooooooo, please scratch the idea. Mom will make her own and send her checks that way, but certainly not suggest anyone else do the same.

SiberH, thanks for the info about the positions on the dog sled team. Next year will be that much more fun since we will know more about the dogs and the sport.

Rebecca, thanks for checking in and the awesome picture of Whitey.

I think that Gus and BB have a good idea. We will need to design a patch for the 2012 race. I know I would proudly wear one on my jacket!

Bee is right about the gender question. And look at P.A. Some of his books are written from a man’s perspective and some from a woman’s (not to mentions S.Q.’s perspective). A good writer should write so that you lose yourself in the story, and it should be so believable that you don’t even know or question the gender of the author.

On that note we will say good night.

Wolfie!…. Even before you posted your last thought about Booties….snort!… I was remembering that Rebecca had written about them and I wanted to share that part with you…snort!… Here is what she said about Booties, “As far as booties—I haven’t even had time to think about booties for next year yet, but that thought will likely wake me in the middle of the night all too soon. Booties, while made from specific materials are fairly easy to make, just time consuming. My sewing machine thanks this specific Plunderer for the offer.”…heh!….See, she will need your help later in the year when booties become top of the list…snort! …So be prepared Wolfie!!!!!

Thanks Rebecca & Rio for the fun picture of A.J. & Whitey. It makes me smile each time I look at it. I wonder how much those dogs weigh, maybe Whitey jumps up himself.

Siber-H: Thanks for all the interesting info. Now I can sort of picture the team in my head. I bet Whitey was a Wheel dog so A.J. would not have so far to chase him if Whitey decided to go exploring.

I read books that the story sounds interesting not by author, although I do have my favorite authors & look for books by them. Sometimes I look for ones that are about San Francisco.

Every time I visit Chet’s blog I find my cheeks hurting from smiling so much.

One thing you should know about Whitey-Lance is he loves hugs. All of our dogs love attention. Some prefer belly rubs to hugs or ear scratches, but for W.L. it’s all about the hug. Why do I tell you this?—when we tried Whitey in lead during a fall training run rather than going forward, he tried to run back to the four-wheeler for a hug. He would have been fine to lead the team in circles so long as there was a hug involved. What a goof…

Who will be the lead dogs in the 2012 Iditarod? Good question. We have six, now seven leaders with Zebbe that we can call upon to lead the team to Nome. It’s good to have more than just two leaders on a team because you can change the leaders around to give them a break and if you have to drop a lead dog or two you can still continue on the trail. Some teams have had to scratch because they had to drop both their leaders and had no other dog that could fill their booties. A good lead dog is an extension of the musher and is priceless.

To C Harris: Please feel free to email us if you want to come out to the kennel and interview Whitey-Lance on behalf of the Plunderers: snowhookkennel@gmail.com.

Dawson, we are not old farts at all. Guess Rio just thinks of us that way since our ideas never please him. She is a really great hugger though and I know how much she loves me. Thank you Rebecca for sharing Whitey and his life story with us here at Chet’s Blog.
