No Post Today

Why not? Because we just found out Bernie’s mom is coming for Thanksgiving. Bernie’s mom is a piece of work. For one thing she’s bringing a new husband, name of Lenny. “How many husbands does that make?” Suzie said. Bernie didn’t know, so that means it must be a big number. Bernie’s real good with numbers, except when the numbers are about money.

Here’s another thing: She calls Bernie Kiddo! What’s up with that?

So now Bernie and I are searching the whole house for the pot that we deep fry the turkey in. “How can we have lost a big thing like that?” Bernie says. A good question, as humans say. But what does that mean, exactly? I’m not sure I like questions of any kind. But I do like Thanksgiving, my very favorite holiday. Is it tomorrow?

Doesn't cooking in that turkey pot mean that the firemen come?

We hope Bernie cooks that turkey outside, if he is going to use a deep fryer. They can be dangerous if used inside.

We saw on the news this morning that special security is in force during the Obama's visit to India to protect them from MARAUDING MONKEYS!

Since Thanksgiving is over two weeks away, I don't understand why Bernie is in a dither so soon.

Good morning Mollypop and B&M and everyone.

MollyPop: I think you are correct about the firemen.

Barb & MagPie: Between Staff's coyotes and marauding monkeys, rampaging goats, and beaver attacks, do you think Nature is trying to tell us something?

B.Stover: I think if Zoë were like Bernie's mom, I, also, would be in a dither.

Good morning all, from the ice encased Western Hills of Massachusetts!

Zoë needed to go out to get a new vacuum. For some reason they do not last too long here. So 20 minutes before she left I went out to start the car. I had to crawl in the passenger side and use my cane for the clutch! Yup, normal for up here.

    The furnace is FIXED!

MagPie! Oh no – not marauding monkeys now!

Melanie – Are the beavers marauding yet? Maybe they have to get their dams built before they attack.

Good morning, y'all! I'm not sure what Thanksgiving will bring around here. My girl has to work the next day — there's a big interstate rivalry football game up there on Friday, so she's going to be busy! So Mom and Dad are wondering if she should make a quick trip back home for the holiday, or if they should go to Clemson for the day. But if they do that, there won't be any goodies for me! Yikes!!!

P.S. I still think Thanksgiving is not much of an excuse for no post today. Unless Bernie's afraid it's going to take him two and a half weeks to find that pan!!! Maybe Spence just wants to string us along until Christmas so he can give us all a special present: the solution to Astrid's case!!!

  10. Kirby T. Penworthy

Oops! That should be intrastate rivalry — between Clemson and the University of South Carolina. Inside the state, not between!

Mollypop, Do you think Rio will freak out when he hears about the marauding monkeys?

They said the monkeys bite children on their way to school, and one governor (I think) fell to his death when he was trying to fend off a monkey attack on his balcony. Evidently the monkeys are sacred, so they will not destroy them, only relocate the captured ones. Good grief!

Mom has to leave, too, and shut off the computer. I would grumble about that, but one of the errands she's doing before work involves getting Buford and me some of our special dog food from the special dog food place!

Oh, and I don't know if I'll be back tonight, because my boy's getting inducted into an honor society at his college. After all Mom and Dad have been through with him, they're pretty proud of it, and they want to be there to cheer for him! And then they're taking him out for a special dinner — Mom says not McDonald's!!!

Maybe it's too cold where SQ is and he can't get over to his office. Or maybe all Chet can think about is turkey!

The winter advisory will be over at noon. So all this dagblasted ice better be gone by then! The main road is fine. Our road is "interesting". Zoë had no trouble with the car. Though why people decide that ice is a good surface to speed in the cars is troubling.

I'm having trouble with being awake. A Nor'Easter will do that to me and then there's the time change. I think my idea of 1/2 hour back would really work.

I just don't see Congress agreeing to that.

SEX! That's the third thing you are not supposed to discuss at dinner parties. Sex, politics and religion. But that was the saying 30/40 years ago. Nowadays everybody talks about sex.

B.Stover: The video/audio of the starlings was a great way to start the day. And: Rio was seeing double which was why he had so many toys – because he absorbed some of Staff's medication during the mauling he gave her.

A special hello back to LizF – my Aussie friend.

Congratulations to Kirby's boy being inducted into honor society. Wow.

WolfieSadButt: Get that wiggle back! I can see your boys being inducted into an honor society as well. They just have some work to do first. Give them time and love.

Melanie: You should write a book! Of all your funny stories with the Newfs. Loved the Rosie story about peanut butter and melatonin. Bess looks wonderful. Glad you got out for the walk with the dogs. Be careful of those beavers. And: A huge boom – the nasty smell of oil? Has BP set up shop in your basement? Glad you got it fixed so quickly.

Chet: Tell Bernie that there was one really great speaker at the convention I went to on the way here: Maude Barlow. She talked about the world's supply of fresh water and how and why it is dwindling.

Rio: Great list. I didn't realize how very many of us regulars there are. And I'm the bubble gum.

It is absolutely a lovely day here so I am going on a bike ride.

I know that there was some kind of disaster when Bernie deep fried a turkey. On the blog on Dec. 2, 2009 ("Leftovers") Chet tells us about the deep fired turkey and that Bernie fried potatoes in the same oil. That isn't what I'm thinking of but can't find anything on a Kindle search.

  28. Siber-H

What do you mean Thanksgiving isn't tomorrow!! How many days to I have to wait? It is my favorite holiday just like it is Chets.

It is going to be 70 degress here today, also. I'm glad they got Melanie's furnace fixed so quickly, on a Sunday evening no less. We never have ice like that here. I hope they get Stover's car fixed quickly. As mom says, we are at their mercy.

Bernie, every year at Thanksgiving on the news they show a house going up in flames because the people used a deep fat turkey fryer. Our neighbors on both sides of us use one of those turkey fryers. GASP!

Dad deep fries his turkeys every year but he's smart enough to do it outside. It can make a real mess sometimes. But it is soooooooo good! Of course down here it's usually pretty warm and no problem being outside.

  38. Barb & Maggie

Barb's brother in N.C. usually deep frys their turkey, too. He also has the sense to cook it outside. He says it is very moist and nott greasy it all.

The following is a Rant. If you don't want to read the Rant, please skip.

Soo, it's not enough today that we had an ice storm, and

my knee will be doing fine and then all of a sudden send shooting, unbelievable awful pain, and

the hospital lab lost ALL TEN of my vials of BLOOD and

wanted me to go back to Springfield, that's one hour and 45 min. away, no that's not enough.

I'm standing out side and a NASTY person in a mini van, aims for a puddle AND

sprays slush all up my left side.

There are times I wish I drank alcohol.

My knee appointment is on Thursday.

I'm only going to Northampton, 35 minutes away, to have my blood taken again.

And if I see that mini van, I'm shooting it.

Melanie what is it about your family that causes your blood to be so good at hiding? We second the motion that you should shoot the van.

Mom says that they have a turkey fryer at The Big Orange Box that does not use oil. Uhh..doesn't frying by definition require frying? It says it cooks with infrared, but by me that makes it infraredding. Either way, I like turkey, turkey, turkey and would not mind a turduckin either.

AND Wölfie's back! How's the dude? Are you wiggling your butt yet? Will send you a message when I need you to blur over and pee on that van.

I'm very sad. My Boy's dear friend was killed in Afganistan. His parents have gone to pick up his body.

I don't want political comments – I just needed to say this and that Mom is writing a letter to President Obama.

I'm sorry Sam. YSAS's best friend was killed there two years ago. He went to the funeral and said that it was very reaffirming the way his friend's unit and other people in the Army supported his family.

His friend was also an actor but decided that he needed to follow his grandfather's footprints and joined up. He loved the Army.

    YSAS misses him.

And I misspelled it – Afghanistan.

Molly and Aunt Mollysmom came today and we all had dinner and talked and talked. I positioned myself just in case anything fell, but otherwise I was part of it too. Dad came home early and made dinner – stuffed pork chops.

I'm back! Mom says it was a very nice ceremony, with candle lighting and everything. And then they went to Red Lobster for dinner. Mom brought home a doggie bag, but it went into the refrigerator instead of my tummy! What's that all about?

Sam: I'm so sorry about your boy's friend. My Dad used to be in the Army, and post was a really sad place whenever something happened to one of the soldiers. Mom says that when Dad was in Somalia — twice! — she was really scared a lot of the time. She's glad he retired before this new business started.

Thanksgiving! … I think during this Thanksgiving we should all say a very special Thanks with True Gratitude in our hearts to all of the men and women who have given so much for the most part of a decade now for our homeland safety from terrorism …..grunt!… Unbelievable, as that is…sigh!…So many lives lost or destroyed, so much grief and despair… sniff!…This is a world of sorrows….

Hope!… We here still live in hope. The world is tough and very harsh for so many of us but there is still Hope…sniffle!… She has a heart for those in need….snort!…Main reason we NEVER go on extravagant vacations….grunt!…We here, she says, have so much compared to so many in the world…wheeze!… Having a home, enough food to eat, clean water to drink, a car! is WAY MORE than the majority of the people who live on this planet… sniff!.. That is a very amazing thought. We all should give more to those who do not have enough. …snuffle… World Vision is the main organization we give the most to…snort!…Help the kids.

Rio: Thanks, I think Dad was a pretty big hero, too! I hope when you're remembering the veterans you give a little thanks to their families, too. They sacrifice a lot, moving every few years, saying goodbye to their loved ones and not knowing if or when they'll see them again. Especially these days — many of our military units are in their third or fourth deployment overseas — that's tough all around.

Sam, we are sorry for the loss of your boy's friend. We are very glad there are young men heroic enough to stand and defend this country, but hate the loss of life. Words aren't enough.

Well, it's after midnight now, and Mom says 5:00 comes awfully early, especially when it's cold out! Not that our cold compares with the cold you Northerners are having, but Mom's still a California girl at heart! And my Southern bones aren't liking the morning chill too much either. I've gotta try talking Dad into putting my coat on when we go for our walk tomorrow! Luckily, they've been covering me up with a blanket when I go to bed at night — nothing better than a nice, warm bed to cuddle up in!

    Good night, y'all!
