“When was your last haircut?” Admin says.
“Can’t remember,” Spence says.
“But you’re going like that?”
“What choice do I have now? I’ll miss the flight.”
Admin shakes his head and leaves the room.
Spence gives me a look. “Do you think I need a haircut, Chet?”
I give him a look back.
Spencer Quinn will be there Saturday at 4:15, maybe a little earlier.

Hope you have a big crowd, and have fun at Barkworld Expo. I wish I could be there, but I couldn't get the time off work to be able to travel to Atlanta in time. Anyway, have a great time!!!!
3:37 am on August 20th, 2010
Does Astrid need a haircut, too? We don't know, because you haven't found her yet!!!! When oh when are you going to look for her again?
P.S. I've been practicing my fierce straight-ear look in preparation for scaring off PA/SQ fans at the Decatur Book Festival. I think one time I had both ears standing tall and proud for at least 10 minutes. There ain't gonna be anyone at those programs but me!
4:23 am on August 20th, 2010
Spence: I could braid it for you…would that help?
Good Morning Joe.
Kirby: Your flow sheet does make things in this long-suffering Astrid case a bit clearer than mud and since we have to wait another day!!! I'm gonna need it just to remember the facts. Thanks. Acturally the fans are long-suffering…the wait for facts is just long…very long.
4:37 am on August 20th, 2010
Dawson: I think I'd like to see Spence with braided hair! My girl used to try to "do" her dad's hair with barrettes and such — very fetching!
4:40 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby: Are you fiercer when both ears are standing straight up?
4:44 am on August 20th, 2010
My boy took a picture of me napping the other day, and everyone around here seems to think it's pretty funny. I don't get it! I was pretty darned comfy, and what's so funny about that? (I think that's pretty unfair, by the way, taking a picture of me when I have no say in the matter! Don't some cultures think taking pictures of someone steals a piece of their soul?!)

4:45 am on August 20th, 2010
Dawson: Indubitably!!!!
4:48 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby: You do look very comfy. 🙂 Since it's gonna be a slow news day maybe you can come up with a word of the day for us to ponder?
4:55 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby!…That’s one way to keep your ear up!… heh!…snort!
4:57 am on August 20th, 2010
Rio: You're right — my ear is up, but I can do it even without the pillow!
4:58 am on August 20th, 2010
OK, I haven't had a whole lotta time to ponder, but how about a quick word of the day. In honor of recent posts, the word of the day is: HIRSUTE.
5:09 am on August 20th, 2010
The Sailor – a guy who hangs around here occasionally – is hirsute. Once Christy asked if he ever needed sunscreen on his back, as the hair caused so much shade?
The Librarian likes your picture, Kirby. She says,
"Extremely cute. I want to hug him."
Harumph. I prefer one ear up and one down. Also, the tongue hanging out is a nice touch.
5:13 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby!…. hmmm. This is a hard one! …snort!… and then Fatty gave me a clue!…Hirsute – old hippie? ….snort!
5:14 am on August 20th, 2010
Fatty Kitty: I love hugs! And I definitely look friendlier with one ear flopping, and fiercer with both up. But I don't know why the tongue was out — don't normally do that. Maybe I was dreaming about a big, thick steak?!
5:18 am on August 20th, 2010
Leaving!…. She is packing up to go so this is goodbye till later!….snort!
5:27 am on August 20th, 2010
Rio: Our prayers are with you!
5:27 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby, Oh my gosh what a perfect word. How appropos is that! We were thinking a ponytail would work for Spence, too.
5:30 am on August 20th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: That's true — Mom is re-listening to Dog On It right now, and there's a place where Chet talks about someone who has a ponytail, and how even though he doesn't like horses, he likes ponytails. So Spence with a ponytail would be perfect!
5:45 am on August 20th, 2010
By the way, guys, I am the shining star in Barb's eyes this morning. I'm feeling treats in my near future! Last night #5 ratty-rat bit the dust, right after I bit him!!
Barb took me out to the coop late last night and the little scoundrel was feasting in the chicken feeder. He took off for the hole they chewed in the floor, but I nailed him just before he made his escape. Now he is over the Rainbow Bridge (if rats go there, not sure). Just one little laggard to go….
5:46 am on August 20th, 2010
I know hirsute: One of our "inmates" is hirsute…or was…he convinced a new employee to make him "un-hirsute. Now he itches all over!
5:48 am on August 20th, 2010
Way to go Magpie! Personally, I'm not sure I could do your job. For one thing, the rats would probably be almost as big as I am! But I can be pretty fierce! Just this morning I took off after our new kat, and if Dad hadn't stopped me I could have…well, never mind. I really don't want to hurt the new kat, I just want to get to know her. It's not my fault she's scared of me!
5:50 am on August 20th, 2010
Oooh, Dawson. Why would anyone want to be un-hirsute? Being hirsute is the greatest thing in the world! Is your "inmate" re-hirsuting now? That would probably relieve the itchiness!
5:51 am on August 20th, 2010
Ho Ho Kirby: I hope that Kat doesn't decide to make a stand. If she does, cover your nose with your hirsute paws.
5:56 am on August 20th, 2010
I know Kirby: I was shocked when I saw him. I know my jaw dropped. I told him he'd been watching too much televison. He was pleased as punch though so I didn't go on about it. To each their own.
5:58 am on August 20th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: Maggie you must be so fast to be able to catch those nasty rats. Cangratulations and be careful.
6:00 am on August 20th, 2010
Dawson: LOL! In other words, I laugh in the face of danger. 'Cause that kat has a mighty strange face!
We got the new kat a couple months ago because her owners were moving and couldn't take her. She was supposed to be Siamese, but when we picked her up we saw she's only part Siamese. Later we found out she's a special kind of kat called a Snowshoe — a mix of Siamese and American shorthair. So she looks like a Siamese, but she has a white nose and her front paws and back legs are white, too. She was supposed to be Mom's kat, but she has "adopted" our boy and runs whenever she sees Mom. Mom thinks it was because her previous owners were two men, so she's more comfortable with our boy. So now Mom says when our boy moves out, he has to take Possum with him!
6:03 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby, I like your photo, and by the way, you look like you could have a little Rat Terrier or Min Pin in your background. I think you could handle those rodents just fine. They are really just oversized mice you know.
6:03 am on August 20th, 2010
When the pretty young blonde went to the beach, all the boys thought hirsute fit her just fine.
6:06 am on August 20th, 2010
Sam: That ought to be the "use-it-in-a-sentence" sentence in the dictionary!
6:11 am on August 20th, 2010
Sam! I'm laughing. By the way, Princess. I sure did miss your royal self while you were gone. And your Aunt Mollypop. Glad you are back. Now if we could only find Lexie: Queen of Bobs. 🙁 🙂
6:12 am on August 20th, 2010
Magpie: Did you ever read Gregor the Overlander? There's one good-guy rat in the book, but all the rest of the rats are bad guys! And the mice and bats are good guys! Those are great books, even if they are written for kids.
At various times we've had bats and mice in our house — built in 1888 with lots of cracks, remember? — and I wasn't thrilled about it. But I think rats around here would really freak me out!
6:22 am on August 20th, 2010
Here again with the computer Internet connection coming from being tethered to Mom's cell phone. Yesterday's test was inconclusive as to whether we are ready to get rid of the Sprint Nextel 3G card or not. When the new software is working, it's free and it's fast. However, I had to reinstall the PdaNet software 3 times for Mom. And each time that I got the message that the file was corrupted, I had to fire up the Sprint card to be able to download a new file.
6:24 am on August 20th, 2010
MagPie! I am in awe of your lightning speed in catching those ratty things. I'll bet you were blurring just like Wolfie.
6:28 am on August 20th, 2010
Mollypop: I'm in awe of your computer skills!!! Did you see how many times last night I tried to download the new-and-improved flowchart. I'm almost hoping there aren't anymore clues or perps in this thing so I don't have to go through all that again!
7:15 am on August 20th, 2010
Spence: Have a great crowd and great time at the Expo. Wish I could be there. (And I'm sure you don't look hirsute.)
7:29 am on August 20th, 2010
I love the word hirsute. (From the Latin for shaggy or rough, but it's also related to our word "horrid" which at one time meant shaggy or bristling.)
Kirby: I thought of a few things for the flow chart but they may just clutter things up so I leave it up to you. I do think that the questions are things we need answers to but perhaps they could just be listed.
–Albie (deceased) was found in a freezer. [When was he killed and who killed him? Why is his house deserted?]
–Col. Bob speaks to Ray in Bakersfield. [What was said?]
–Ray is 25 or so. He was found by C&B at Albie's house with a gun and bloody towels. [Why did he seek out Col. Bob? When did he last see his mother, Astrid? Who set him up?]
–Foster claims not to know Ray. [If true, who called Ray to set him up?]
–Astrid [Did she run away or was she taken? Where is she?]
9:01 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby – I'm counting on you for the flowchart. I listen to what everyone is saying because I have trouble putting all the pieces together. With computer pieces I do fine and I love flowcharts!
9:09 am on August 20th, 2010
I'm working on another version of the chart with Bee's latest suggestions and a few of my own. Mom has to go to the store and pay some bills — does that mean she won't have enough money to buy me treats??? — so if anyone has anything else they'd like to see added to the chart, let me know! I'll finish it up when she gets home and lets me back on the computer.
9:59 am on August 20th, 2010
Yippee — my boy went to an interview for an internship at a court for his paralegal studies. And he just called to say he got it!!! So if all goes well, he'll graduate in December and have a good thing to put on his resume — and maybe even meet some lawyers who would want to hire him for a "real" job!
10:14 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby T: Congratulations to your boy.
10:17 am on August 20th, 2010
That is wonderful news Kirby. I worked in a law firm….in another lifetime…..It was very interesting work.
What did Chet's return look at Spence say do you suppose?
10:19 am on August 20th, 2010
I think Chet is highly is favor of Spence maintaining his hirsute image!
10:20 am on August 20th, 2010
Whew! Sam, what a punster!
Congrats to MagPIe. FIVE rats. You should get a medal.
Dawson, to the "inmate" who is no longer hirsute. YSAS had to have a tattoo on his forearm for a role. His brother designed it (cool thing, celtic cross) and YSAS had it hennaed on his arm. They shaved his arm. UNFORTUNATELY, they did not tell him that as the hair grows back it can grow back in and get INFECTED! He hurt.
10:22 am on August 20th, 2010
Thanks! My boy was a National Merit Scholar — whatever that is — but "lost his way" when he got to college. I'm sure you've seen that happen, Bee. But now he seems to be finding himself again, and now that he's gotten interested in law, his goal is to become a lawyer. For now, though, it'll have to be paralegal!
10:24 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby, Tell your boy Congrats. Not easy in this job market, for sure. We have not read Gregor, but Barb says bats are good guys and would be off limits for me because they are beneficial to the environment.
We get mice too, because we are in the country and they like to come in when the weather starts getting cold. They are not as scary as the rats. Barb says the one I got last night is about 16-18" long, but half of that is tail.
Mollypop, Both Mr. Rata-tat-tat and I were blurring, but I blurred faster.
10:28 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby T's boy . . Hip Hip Hurrah!
Some sad news and then happy . .
Bess has not been doing well and in the last week started losing the ability to use her back legs. We knew she had arthritis of the spine and we thought we were going to lose her.
She went to the vet yesterday and x-rays were taken but nothing had gotten worse. The vet thought maybe it had to do with the impulses from her brain to her legs through her spinal cord.
Then this morning he called and said he had decided to run one more test and darn if she doesn't have diabetes!
So I went down and took a sample of urine with me (always fun, keep thinking I'll get stopped and have to explain that) and yup Glucose was up.
She had her first shot of insulin a couple of minutes ago.
She should be fine. And we can breathe again.
10:29 am on August 20th, 2010
Rio! I just saw a TV story about a trained beagle who is sniffing out bedbugs at the University of Wisconsin! The guy said the dog went to Florida for a four-month training course and is now a certified bedbug hunter. Have you done that yet?
10:35 am on August 20th, 2010
Melanie: Thanks, and I'm glad you seem to be having a good outcome. Give my best to Bess!
Maggie: I don't care how much of that was tail, 16 to 18 inches is waaaay too big for a rat. Yuck! And bats are indeed good — when they're outside eating bugs. But when they're flying around in your attic — and even in your house — and leaving guano, not so much!!!
10:48 am on August 20th, 2010
Kirby, Really only 8-9 inches of actual rat body. Not so big. And bat guano is supposed to be great fertilizer, looking at the positive side.
Glad Bess is going to be ok.
10:52 am on August 20th, 2010
Melanie: Thank goodness it's just diabetes. Give Bess a few back rubs from me. Thanks for the tip on "un-hirsute" man.
Barb and Maggie: That sounds like a good sized rat to me.
11:02 am on August 20th, 2010
Rio will be upset about Bess. I'm glad they found the problem and hope she starts doing better.
11:03 am on August 20th, 2010
I shudder at the thought of meeting a rat like that. If ever the Librarian sees one, she'll have to call you, Maggie.
My brother Luigi used to get insulin shots once a day for years. He did very well with them; even got a treat when he was done. Of course, then they had to give me one as well. >^..^<
Gregor the Overlander – a surprisingly good book considering it takes place under the ground after one falls through a hole behind the washing machine. Did your Mom read the whole series, Kirby? And is she reading The Hunger Games?
Which reminds me, I'm hungry.
11:06 am on August 20th, 2010
I belong to Four Seasons Wine club and they send wine from all over the world four times a year. (You can order in between time of course.) They just sent a Malbec from Alma Andina estate in Argentina. I'm going to try it tonight (because I can now taste things again!!!). I'm saving the Cahors for September 28.
12:03 pm on August 20th, 2010
We are glad Bess is going to be fine…she should be. Keep us posted, Melanie. We've known dogs that had diabetes, and they had a happy life and lived a normal life span.
Stover must be feeling better because she can taste things. Hope the sinus infection is gone for good now.
Maybe Spence will tell us about Barkworld when he returns.
12:09 pm on August 20th, 2010
Maggie, You go girl! I think you have killed more rats than Rio has bed bugs.
That is a cute picture, Kirby.
12:53 pm on August 20th, 2010
B.Stover can smell! Does that mean you've had that special wine that was posted about a month or two ago?
Thanks all, I will tell Bess!
1:14 pm on August 20th, 2010
B., my Dad said he has had many Malbecs from Argentina and they're just okay. Of the two Cahors Malbecs that he found locally, he said they were both outstanding. After you have had yours to celebrate the new book, let's post the names of each with our reviews.
1:18 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie, You are reading every other word again!!! Bee said she is saving the Cohors for Sept. 28th, that magical day.
I think that special look that Chet gave Spence this morning had to do with ponytails.
1:40 pm on August 20th, 2010
Story!….Last thing I said before leaving was something about an “old hippy”… heh!… My friend told me a story about when she drove to Nebraska with her very best friend in the whole wide world whom she loved and looked up to just like a big sister (one she never had for real)… snort!…Well, her best friend was so anxious for my friend to meet her brother and his wife (A Quilter!) that’s all she could talk about the whole way through the big boring state of Nebraska….wheeze!…When they finally pulled up to the beautiful log cabin home a guy with a really long gray pony tail came out and hugged my friends best friend… snort!… Then her best friend introduced her brother to my friend who of course was standing there with her mouth hanging open…heh!…She was thinking, “Really, an old hippie??”… sneeze!… They both looked at her and started laughing big time, he pulled off the wig and she knew she had been ‘had’… heh!
1:44 pm on August 20th, 2010
Riö your friend was "had"!
Wonderful. Yes, Barb & MagPie, except I think at this point I'm reading every fourth word. The vet trip went from 10 am to 3 pm.
1:48 pm on August 20th, 2010
This Malbec is very good and rich….deep deep purple. I'll see how it compares to the Cahors Sept. 28. Yes Sam, let's post our reviews with the name of the brands. Fun!
1:56 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie – If we had known about the problem with Bess, we would have been very worried. I guess you had to wait to tell us. My whole family is still concerned until we know Bess is fine and dandy.
2:03 pm on August 20th, 2010
I'm back from my outdoor time — aaaah, I love the Great Outdoors, as long as it's not raining or snowing or too hot or too cold or too long!
Bee: I'm glad you can taste again. I can't imagine not being able to taste my snacks — like the ones I just got when I came back inside! Unlike Chet, I can count up to three, because that's how many snacks I get every evening!
Librarian: Mom did read the whole Overlander series — couldn't wait for each book to come out! She hasn't started the other series yet. Just about the time she thought she should read The Hunger Games, it came out on the SC Book Awards list, so was summer reading for all the middle school students, which made it impossible to get. Not to mention that she didn't want to deprive some student who needed to read it for school — every time she saw some kid walk in with that blue sheet of paper she cringed, because the waiting list for each book was so long. So now that summer reading is over, she's hoping to get her hands on it.
(From Kirby's Mom: And it's amazing how many parents refuse to buy a $5 paperback because if it's required reading, the school — or the library — should provide it for free! So they get upset with us when they walk in a week before school starts and the books aren't sitting on the shelf awaiting their little darling's choice. We try, but with every middle school student in the whole county reading from the same list of books, there's just no way we can have enough copies! At one point about two weeks before school started, I remember looking up The Hunger Games for a student and the waiting list was 98 people long. Even though we have 55 copies in the system, they check out for three weeks at a time. You do the math! Sorry — that's my soapbox for the day!)
2:03 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie!… Yes, my friend was ‘had’ as in ‘tricked’…snort!… I am having trouble processing this illness that Bess has…sniff!… Will she be able to drive soon?…gasp!…We had plans for the World Series and even after that!…sniffle!… Please tell me she will be her old Bess self very soon!…slobber! cough! sneeze!
2:19 pm on August 20th, 2010
Before driving I think Bess will be able to watch the Rockies with you. You might have to get Wölfie to blur you over!
OTAS has started the audio of DOI and LOVES IT! He started repeating whole parts of it. He has almost memorized it!
2:29 pm on August 20th, 2010
Generations!…. The Chet and Bernie books defy the generation gap! … heh!… I wonder if any Know-It-All professional Reviewer will ever talk about that? …snort!
2:35 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie, Are your boys just getting to the C & B series? My kids still have not read them, but there are some gifts in their futures.
2:44 pm on August 20th, 2010
Barb & MagPie, YSAS has not had the time yet. When he's doing a role he emerses himself in the role and won't read anything new. And this month he's really busy with kids. Once he starts the extra work again, he can put it in his iPod and listen for the many hours he's waiting . .
OTAS is listening on his way to and from work.
3:11 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie!…What is Clarkson working on now?…snort!…He mentioned something that was not for sure back when he was visiting you, but now that he is definitely on the job…wheeze!…can you tell me what he is doing?… gruff!
3:13 pm on August 20th, 2010
Stover! ….What was the question you had about Rubicon?… snort!…We sort of finished episode 3 today…grunt!…If we remember it or not is the tricky part!…sneeze!
3:29 pm on August 20th, 2010
YSAS is paying forward!! Every summer he helps by directing a youth acting camp.
He was in this troop when he was 13 until 17. The kids love him there. So do the parents. They think he's a good role model (if they only knew, snicker) So for one month he takes off from his acting career and works his magic with kids.
The other role which he won't talk about is hopefully this fall.
3:34 pm on August 20th, 2010
Rio: In Rubicon the husband of the Miranda Richardson character left her a town house she knew nothing about. Her dead husband's friend (I think his name is Wheeler but I'm not sure) tells her he knew nothing about the town house. We find out in one of the episodes that he is part of the group that apparently wanted her husband to commit suicide so we know there is something strange about Wheeler. At the end of the third episode he goes I think to the town house and takes a black and white photo of young kids. We see it very briefly and I think it is of Wheeler, the husband and others when they were young. Do you think he went to the town house? If so he also lied about knowing about it.
3:35 pm on August 20th, 2010
I wonder how BarkWorld Expo is coming along.
4:08 pm on August 20th, 2010
Stover!… Miranda’s late husbands friend (is he their lawyer too?) is into something big bad and terrible….snort!…. He blatantly lied to her and Yes, he had a key to the townhouse that he knew nothing about and walked right in, took that photo of a bunch of kids… grunt!… I was excited to find out that baseball history played a part in our “good guy” being able to decipher the code left behind because of his hatred of the Yankees! …heh!heh! ..We here love that part so far! …gruff!
Groan!… Now we are going for a vigorous walk and I don’t want to dammit!…sniff!…I just want to be left alone and do nothing…snort!…But no, now I have my halter on and we are going no matter what…maybe that cute pug down the street left me a message along our street!…hmmmm!…sniff!sniff!
4:09 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie!… I just adore your Clarkson!…snort!… He is something very special…sniff!
4:11 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melanie, That is wonderful that he is working with the kids. He must have a very big heart. And you must have raised him right.
4:19 pm on August 20th, 2010
Thanks Rio. I thought it was the townhouse.
Eureka is really strange tonight….a guy was cemented.
4:59 pm on August 20th, 2010
Back!… And you guys know what!…snort!…We both are feeling better than ever tonight….Gruff!…Today was a Very Good day for us….snorkel!… I can’t tell you all the details, but things that were bothering us so much have been lifted off our hearts and a lightness in our step has returned!…heh!… Watch out Alice!…snort! … Hey! The Rockies are on now too!…gruff!… Going to get in some “cough time”…heh!
5:01 pm on August 20th, 2010
Why!?…Why do I always spell couch with a “g”….snort!…A mystery.
5:01 pm on August 20th, 2010
I'm glad Rio. Enjoy the game.
5:14 pm on August 20th, 2010
Melinie: You just got Mom thinking that maybe she should get my girl one of the Chet and Bernie books when we see Spence next month. Katie has two dogs of her own, so she might appreciate ol' Chet the Jet! I think I've mentioned before that it's Mom and Dad's "fault" that she has two dogs even though she's still in college. She says it's because she grew up with so many animals in the house — three dogs, three cats and a flying squirrel — so she adopted Addison and Maggie. So do OTAS and YSAS each have a houseful of dogs, since you provided such a "bad" example?
5:16 pm on August 20th, 2010
By the way, I'm getting ready to (attempt to) send the third version of the flowchart, unless anyone has anything else to add?
5:20 pm on August 20th, 2010
Kirby!…yelp! My friend was looking at the Pug Rescue site earlier…snort!… I climbed into her lap and messed that whole deal up big time….grunt!… I don’t care if there are hundreds and maybe thousands of other guys who need a home…wheeze!… This is MY home and I don’t want to share it with any other guy right now…grump!
5:22 pm on August 20th, 2010
Kirby!…WAIT!.. snort!… give me a minute to think…sniff!
5:25 pm on August 20th, 2010
Rio: I'm kind of feeling the same way — and I hope Mom and Dad are, too. It just got a little crazy around here with all those animals, since we don't have much of a yard. Right now we're "down to" two dogs and two kats. We wouldn't even have that second cat except her owners said they were at the point where they were thinking they might have to go back to her breeder's house in the middle of the night, leave the kat on the porch, ring the doorbell and run!
5:28 pm on August 20th, 2010

Rio, Glad you and your friend are feeling better tonight. Are you sure you wouldn't like a cute little Puglett rescue, or even an old grumpy Pug rescue to joing you? You wil never be lonley, my friend!
We are going to our beds. Big day with obedience class tomorrow morning.
Hope Spence is having a good time.

Thank you for the flowchart Mr. Penworthy. It is a thing of beauty. The L. says your Mom can vent to her anytime.
Light hearts and feet, Rio & Friend. That is good. Yawwwwn. Methinks I will slumber anon.
