No Post Today

Why not? I’ve actually got one or two things on my mind. Maybe just one. But everyone’s in a big hurry around here. Where, for example, is that shirt of Admin’s, the one with the red checks? I sort of know the answer to that one, if we mean what’s left of the shirt with the red checks. But what’s wrong with the one with the wide blue stripes?

“What’s wrong with the one with the wide blue stripes?” Spence says.

“Can’t find the stupid thing.”

“Are you planning on telling the pre-school story?”

Silence.

“The one-review thing?”

More silence.

“You could always do the sharks. Or what about the Mounties?”

A crashing sound, maybe from something getting thrown. I head for a nice quiet spot under the kitchen table.

My family goes to those places they call School and Work. I think they're lying. Anyway, if I had to wait for them, I'd never get online. They leave the PC on for me and also the TV. They give me the dumb Weather Channel – I can only watch Animal Planet if I have adult supervision.

Spense, you gotta fix this misconception. Sheesh!

    Good Morning, Community!

I would have posted sooner, but the Bobs jumping got me hypnotized and it was not until Annie knocked something off the table that I was able to snap out of it. I was up way too late last night hoping and praying that surely our Rangers would not lose to a nothing team like those orange birds. Grrrr…Annie knows how to take care of birds. We normally try to discourage her, but exceptions can be made.

I'm working on a project that includes research of VanGogh's letters and works and also of biographies and studies of his works. I disagree with a critic I just read: He claims that Starry Night "is an attempt to express a state of shock." No way. Starry Night is a visual representation of the Romantic concept of "organicism"–everything in the universe is connected in a cyclical process…always moving…always changing…in flux.

How do you guys interpret the painting? (The pen and ink drawing is really cool also.)

VanGogh was is the asylum voluntarily and could come and go as he pleased. He had been stoned out of Arles (almost literally) and now needed comfort which he found in a monastic life. It's in nature that he finds harmony, which I think he longed for, rather than in people. The concept of organicism is in Starry Night over the Rhone as well. There he has two people in the foreground. In Starry Night humans are represented by the houses and the church steeple. What does the difference signify? Interesting. I'll have to think about this.

  48. B. Stover
    10:17 am on July 9th, 2010

SH: The critic is associating Van Gogh's paintings with his mental state at the time of painting. He's suggesting that VG is internalizing and exploring his own mental state which the critic feels is expressed in his art. I feel that VG painted to forget himself….or actually, that the act of creation absorbed him to the extent that he forgot everything else. The critic is very interesting and I like his analysis of some of the paintings. Just not this. I always think of VG's work as joyful.

Stover. Not much of an art critic here myself, but your question did make me think of the song by Don McLean called Vicent (although also known as Starry Starry Night), which might provide some inspiration. FYI, Don McLean is probably most famous for his song American Pie, which I would guess represents probably the most pondered (or should I say plundered) song lyric ever written.

    Wookie

Vicent/Starry Starry Night (by Don McLean)

    Starry, starry night.

Paint your palette blue and grey,

Look out on a summer's day,

With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.

    Shadows on the hills,

Sketch the trees and the daffodils,

Catch the breeze and the winter chills,

In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,

How you suffered for your sanity,

How you tried to set them free.

They would not listen, they did not know how.

    Perhaps they'll listen now.

    Starry, starry night.

    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,

    Swirling clouds in violet haze,

Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.

Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,

    Weathered faces lined in pain,

Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,

How you suffered for your sanity,

How you tried to set them free.

They would not listen, they did not know how.

    Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you,

But still your love was true.

And when no hope was left in sight

    On that starry, starry night,

You took your life, as lovers often do.

But I could have told you, Vincent,

This world was never meant for one

    As beautiful as you.

    Starry, starry night.

    Portraits hung in empty halls,

    Frameless head on nameless walls,

With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.

Like the strangers that you've met,

The ragged men in the ragged clothes,

The silver thorn of bloody rose,

Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,

How you suffered for your sanity,

How you tried to set them free.

They would not listen, they're not listening still.

    Perhaps they never will…

VanGogh had been planning (and longing) to set up an artists' colony in Arles. The cafe you like is where he did some of the planning. He was preparing and decorating the yellow house (many of the sunflower paintings were to be hung on its walls) for Gauguin to come and stay. (Don't get me started on Gauguin who I think of as the epitome of bastard. He deserted his wife and five children which says it all.) VG and G were completely different personalities and they had different aesthetic goals, and consequently they didn't get along. VG cut off the lobe of his ear on December 23, 1888, after Gauguin and he had argued and Gauguin had stormed out of the house. I think that VG did it out of despair and he went to the brothel and gave the ear to a prostitute because he thought he would get sympathy/empathy from other social "outcasts." Anyway, they called the police and that led to his eventual eviction from Arles.

Just one more thing about VanGogh (I promise): The last Doctor Who episode had the doctor and Amy meeting VG. What was so wonderful to me, was that they took him to the 21st century Musee D'Orsay in Paris where there was a VG exhibit. VG got to see and hear how much his work is loved today.

Okay, (pushing up long sleeves), I don't think that Mr. Husky sounds like a Porn Star. Especially said or written with respect. Mr. I.B. Husky would be different. Anyhoo, what's this about Riö knowing some porn stars???

Starry Night. I was lucky enough to actually see it in NYC before they sent it out when they were redoing MOMA. It had an entire wall to itself. The lighting was indirect. The painting GLOWS. It is AWESOME. I actually sneaked up on it. I entered the room, looked at the other 3 walls went to the center of the room and SMACK! It hit me right between the eyes.

Melanie..A Tail of 12 Puppies…Those are PUPS? They look almost as big as ME!! Really sweet though. I am sure glad I only had 4 little bitty ones. Now, however, they are bigger than me, or I, or whatever. Min-pins are not known for our grammar. The Starry Night song is beautiful to read. We have heard it many times, but to read it is something else.

Wolfie — Empty Chairs is also a great song. And here is a secret about that song that is quite remarkable. A singer/songwriter named Lori Lieberman saw Don McLean perform that in concert, and she was so moved that she wrote a poem entitled "Killing Me Softly with His Blues", which became the basis for the song "Killing Me Softly With His Song", written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. Lori LIeberman was also the first artist to record the song, although the Roberta Flack version is probably the best. Wookie the Rocker

But the most important news of the day — IT ARRIVED!!!!!!! I was so excited I almost ripped open the package as it came through the mail slot (although, truth be told, a lot of our mail meets that fate). I think I could smell Audrey's scent on the envelope, which drove me even more crazy than normal for "mail call". Anyway, as Rio would say, I'm skipping,I'm skipping. Woooooooooo!!!! Wookie

Rio, your being banned from Netflix wouldn't have anything to do with the 47 copies of "Hotel for Dogs" and "Lassie Come Home" that you ordered last week, would it? Wookie (Rocky the Squirrel blurted it out when I had him cornered)

That's wonderful Wöökie!!! It got by Rockie the undercover squirrel!

Riö, YSAS does not look Cuban. Could not pass for Cuban. He has no idea what happened except he got paid.

The director of the Shakespeare thing changed his look again. I WISH SOMEONE WOULD TAKE PICTURES! He now has Chops and a gotee. Last night was opening, they did great. He made it through his song, supposedly reviewed by can't find that on the internet yet.

We're watching The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It's good, English subtitles, and LONG. Zoë and I keep falling asleep.

The plastic surgeon is now working on Dan. They are doing "plating." Screws with large heads, like plates, into the ribs and sort of create the breast bone.

Good thing he doesn't fly anymore!

They then attach muscles to the screws.

It's cool, Chet. But, chewing up human's things is a bad thing, and can get you into trouble, as I have…found…out…yeah…

Well, I gotta jet again. I'm even MORE busy than ever, for some odd reason.

Melanie: Amazing what doctors can do. Dan will have some good scars to show the grandchildren. Don't show me – I might faint.

I'm relieved everything is going as smoothly and quickly as it can.

The puppies have grown so much! They are toddlers on the stampede after Gracie and I love all their little tails sticking up in the air while they are eating outside. Thanks for the pictures.

And for telling us about seeing Starry Night in person. Cool.

RIO? Which Rockies player is it that has either a British or Australian accent? I can't tell which accent it is or who it is because he is only saying one sentence, and it goes by so quick on the video on their website.

  102. Wookie of Chevy Chas
    4:07 pm on July 9th, 2010

Wolfie. That's a tough one, there are so many to pick from. I am also a bit of a traditionalist, so in terms of first impression, I would probably go with some "classics" like Carole King, Carly Simon and James Taylor. And of course Harry Chapin (rest his soul), who could simultaneously bring a smile to my face and a tear or two to my eyes. But truthfully, I'm actually kind of a musical omnivore; I really like a very broad range of music, even in the rock genre.

Rio. I think Rocky is going to have quite a hangover, so I expect he will be out of commission for at least a couple of days. Too bad. Slurp. Slurp.

Only one problem on the homefront. Grandpa is actually the one who first picked up the ARC before any of the rest of us had a chance. The problem is that he is a slow reader, so I will need to find a way to wrest it out of his hands, but delicately. I'm sure I'll come up with something. The Wookster
