What was the year that Whitey-Lance ran away during the Iditarod? I’ve explained to Beth that the dogs pictured on that patch are Chet and Whitey-Lance. (Melanie designed the patch didn’t she?)

  14. BMALS

    I think it was 2011.

OK, here is the question for Bee. I am reading a Miss Julia book, and the author Ann Ross holds a doctorate in English, so this sentence must be correct, although it doesn’t sound right: Could it have been he?
“Could it have been him?” sounds better to me, but if you switch it around to “He could have been it”, then it sounds right. So which is it, Bee?

  15. B.Stover
    11:23 am on January 28th, 2017

Someone else on Facebook is interested in the patch. Does anyone know where Melanie had them made?

  16. B.Stover
    11:37 am on January 28th, 2017

Barb: “Could it have been he” is correct. “It” is the male being referred to so “it” and “he” are equivalent in the sentence and “it” is the subject of the sentence so “he” must be used. “Him” is the objective case of “he” and is used as an object of a sentence rather than as the subject: “I saw him.” “Could it have been him” probably sounds better because that is the way we often speak but it is not technically correct.

  17. B.Stover
    11:44 am on January 28th, 2017

Barb: The way you tested that sentence by switching it (he could have been it) is what I always told my students to do.

Dawson: I’ve come to the conclusion that trees have more “sense” than humans. (I’m still reading The Hidden Life of Trees.

Thanks Bee. I always say that incorrectly, because it sounds better. “Could it have been they” just sounds weird to me.

Michael Cole is still around and is 71. He looks like an aged hippy – open shirt, gold necklace. Hasn’t aged very well. Peggy Lipton looks much better.

It has been raining (dare I say it?) cats and dogs here. So glad to see the sun for a few days! I love the rain but I was ready for a break!

I am happy to report that Miss Addi is doing well. We had a bit of a scare on the 17th. She under went open heart surgery to replace a shunt and repair a leaky vavle. The surgery started at 7:30 am, and at 6:00pm we were told that they were done and she should be out soon. And we waited. And waited. Finally, at 3:00 am a doctor explained that her heart was not functioning when they took her off the bypass. She remained on life support and was removed prematurely when she develveoped a brain bleed. She came through like a champ and had her chest closed on Thursday. We are so grateful!! Cannot wait to see her tonight!!

Whitey-Lance ran away in 2010 – Snowhook’s rookie year at the Iditarod which they did not finish. The first Iditarod they finished was in 2011. The first Iditarod patch was designed by Melanie and Amalia and came out in 2012 by Patches4Less. It had “Iditarod 2012” “Plunder On!” and “ChetTheDog.com” printed on it with the sled dog team in the distance and Chet with his back to us watching them go across the landscape.

This is the infamous Whitey-Lance that ran away during Justin’s 2010 rookie year. Despite having to drop from the race, thankfully after a couple days he was found near a checkpoint. Now Whitey always wears his official “Where’s Whitey” waldo-striped bandana.

    My hero.

The second patch was made in 2013 by the same company. It has a picture of the Burled Iditarod Arch and “Plunder On, Snowhook!” and “ChetTheDog.com” printed on it and Chet and Whitey-Lance were both looking into the distance towards the arch.

    HOH: That’s the patch!

    Mary: Hooray for Miss Addie!

CHobbitz: Nice pictures of the Guest House in Ca. I love that I recognise some of the art hanging on the walls from my stay in the Hobbit Hotel. Also love the retro kitchen table.

I have 6 extra 2012 patches. I only have one of the non dated patches and I will be keeping it. I also found 4 of the Snowhook notebooks created by the Turtleman. They come with a snowhook writing pad and an extra pad that is plain.

Good news about Addi! Hope she is back home soon. I am not sure what exactly a brain bleed in an infant would be. Anyone know? I think a stroke is caused by a brain bleed in adults. Maybe that was what they were preventing by taking her off the life support when they did. All scary stuff!
