First day of outside PT and in a bit of a rush. But how do you rush when you can’t run, or even walk fast? More haste less speed, mom used to say. Is it true?

Go, Admin, Go!!!
8:17 am on January 26th, 2015
Good morning, everyone! More haste, less speed? WE need to ponder that. Those of y’all that have lots of white shiitake or the “a pack of lips” heading your way, stay warm.
Have a meaningful Monday π
8:18 am on January 26th, 2015
BSD, you snuck up on we π
8:21 am on January 26th, 2015
Hounds: Yes, it is true, youse are in Tip Top Shape now with that newly Functional “s” key, but still, this morning we were faster.
8:32 am on January 26th, 2015
BSD: What OFA’s mother said.
8:49 am on January 26th, 2015
Hey! There’s no one around…do you think they’re in a white-out?
8:49 am on January 26th, 2015
Spence: Calm down and plunder on. Your mom was correct.
Good morning all.
8:58 am on January 26th, 2015
B: Great minds and all that.
Good morning.
8:59 am on January 26th, 2015
Masquers, Teddy might be getting snow as we speak but it looks like most others will hace to wait a bit later in the day for their whiteness. Heck, the Lurker must have brought home some of that warmth, she will get up to 34 today.
9:13 am on January 26th, 2015
We here in northern Illinois are missing the brutal weather. Snow today, but more like 1″.
Knee replacement must take longer to heal. With my surgery it was 10 days before I came home, then 4-5 weeks of home p.t. before I could venture out in the car. Then another two months with the physical therapist before I was released.
They are saying on the news that out east there will be some areas that will get 2-4″ per hour of snow, with white-out conditions and thunder snow. This is going to be a monster storm!
9:31 am on January 26th, 2015
Thunder snow, we do not like that, no we do not. Sorry for those who get it but glad it is NOT us.
9:32 am on January 26th, 2015
The sun is shining brightly here but it is very cold: 14, with wind chill at 2 and dew point at 6. It’s so cold that it’s hard to breathe while outside.
I just looked up Carhenge because I had never heard of it before. What fun!
I also have to check out some of the book recommendations. Thank you Rio and ALR. (So many books…so little time.)
9:33 am on January 26th, 2015
We just Don’t Want Anyone Driving in it. Thunder Snow. YEEP.
10:02 am on January 26th, 2015
Admin: Your mother was a wise woman.
Good morning, all.
I’ve seen lightning in a snow storm but not experienced Thunder Snow.
I hope Willow AK is getting some more snow.
Monday, eh? (Rolling over and pulling blankets back up over my head.)
10:05 am on January 26th, 2015
Wise move, oh Awesome one.
10:06 am on January 26th, 2015
Morning everyone.
We do NOT like Thunder Snow, oh no we do not. It means we have to go under the bed to do dust hippo check. So you will know where we are if you need us
Meanwhile Mama is on her way out now to do pre-storm errands.
10:10 am on January 26th, 2015
B: We, too, saw Staff’s post about Cartenge from last night. Mom wrote to her friend who lives in Omaha to ask about it, and telling her to be sure to visit it before moving to Houston, if she has not done so already.
Dawson: Nice to be able to do that, aye?
Now…waiting to hear from the East Coasters.
10:11 am on January 26th, 2015
There’s one…the Royal Mum.
10:14 am on January 26th, 2015
Going to head over to the library and check out some of those reading recommendations from yesterday. Rio gave us two Fowler books that sound really good. And then the Maisie Dobbs series and Miss Julia series sound interesting too.
10:17 am on January 26th, 2015
Good morning everyone–whoever is doing the PT (I thought it was Admin but it sounds like it might be SQ from some of the posts) do you remember the phrase “Festina Lente” (make haste slowly)?
Same diff and I hope you’re ever more tip-top with each passing day.
ALR–I’m familiar with the Maisie Dobbs series, and like it, although I had some trouble getting past the premise of a housemaid working a 12 day and then staying up at night to teach herself Latin and G_d knows what all else so as to vault into the ranks of an independant lady (or close to). If you need a break, a somewhat more frivolous series is the Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen.
Tupper’s Mama–I was interested in what you said abut the Mohawk, but it wasn’t just them, was it? (Wilma Mankiller was Cherokee, right?)
I do not know what Thunder Snow is, but it sounds scary. For many of us, this sounds like a good day to spend tucked up in front of the TV/’puter screen or with a good book…
10:21 am on January 26th, 2015
Whoever first posted about Carhenge–THANK YOU!!! I must see this!!! (but not until all thundery snow and other scary weather conditions have abated…)
Has anyone actually visited this?

DianeC: It was Staff’s post of last night and she did visit Carhenge.
10:28 am on January 26th, 2015
Masquers–Thanks for the additional information–for a moment I got really excited and started thinking about a trip there with a side excursion to see the rune stones in OK. then I looked at a map–not that close. (But I can still do Carhenge…)
10:31 am on January 26th, 2015
Yeep!
Tupper’s Mama: Get your errands done with haste, not speed, then get home before you get stranded!
10:32 am on January 26th, 2015
Well. Thank Dog…Spence’s Team will be getting out of town and heading towards Arizona…Just in Time!
Diane: We Want to See Carhenge too!
10:49 am on January 26th, 2015
Diane – the Mohawks are part of the 6 Nations Iroquois Confederacy – Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Tuscarora and Seneca. They are matriarchal and matrilineal. They all look to the Clan Mothers.
The Cherokee are not matriarchal, but have always respected women and put them in the position of respect and leadership, and while chieftainship could be passed down, could go to either a son or a daughter. Wilma Mankiller was an elected tribal chairman, demonstrating the Cherokees’ continued good sense in respecting brains and leadership abilities over gender.
Ahhh, if only the rest of the world could grasp that concept……
11:18 am on January 26th, 2015
Stay safe T&G’s Mama! OH, Teddy, Wose, be safe, check in when you can.
11:24 am on January 26th, 2015
Howdy! Mom drove our Sibe-aroo to her shelf today. She reported that the roads are still good. Pop is home with us, because he is taking a class that he can do over the computer and phone.
We had more to say, but now we forget.
11:29 am on January 26th, 2015
As I had reported previously, we are luckily just getting the tail end of the storm. Nothing more than a dusting this morning; it is snowing lightly now, but predictions are on the order of 1-3 inches for the DC Metro area at worst, so thank dog for that.
On the Stonehenge front, I have been to Stonehenge and it is certainly a moving experience, although perhaps a little less majestic in person than it appears in photos. From my perspective, a much more moving experience right here in the U.S.(putting aside Carhenge in wacky Nebraska) is Chaco Canyon in Northern New Mexico, which represents probably the best collection of Puebloan ruins in the U.S., and the science of the alignment of many of the structures is simply amazing (there is a film done about the history of Chaco Canyon, narrated I think by Robert Redford, that explains alignment of a number of structures in terms of the soltices and sight lines). Chaco Canyon is not that accessible (you need a four-wheel drive vehicle for the last 25 miles or so), but it is definitely worth it.

The Anasazi are fascinating. We have Heard Stories that tell of these people originally coming over the Land Bridge from Asia in Ancient Times. Whether this is true, we know not. http://www.crystalinks.com/anasazi.html

Thank you Wookie and Teddy’s Dad and Bear. I didn’t know about Chaco Canyon. It’s fascinating.
The program T&G mentioned on the Smithsonian Channel about Stonehenge is showing today at 2PM Eastern. I believe that it will be repeated tomorrow at 5PM Eastern.

B: Thank You. We Will Be Watching.
12:40 pm on January 26th, 2015
I hope Spence is getting ready for the storm. I know his team is happy to be leaving for Arizona.
Mom has been to Chaco Canyon several times. I have not, but it isn’t far from here. This has nothing to do with the majesty of Chaco Canyon, but mom had a dog skunked there once. He broke out of the tent and went after a skunk in the campground. That was when mom learned to sleep with the leash wrapped around her arm whenever she is sleeping outside with a dog.
1:20 pm on January 26th, 2015
BSD, Thank you for the video on Chaco Canyon. I have never been there, but would love to see it in person. I wonder if it is close to where T & G’s mama grew up.
Back from the library – they did not have MPM’s book City of Lights, but I was able to order it. They had Sara Canary by Fowler on the shelf, and I also snagged the first book in the Miss Julia series.
Just saw on tv that they have issued a state of emergency in both N.Y. and N.J. They are warning people to get home early from work. After 11:00 p.m. the roads will only be open to emergency vehicles.

Western Massachusetts: No snow yet. Expecting lots. The younger son is taking care of shopping for essentials. I am getting my school work done now so that I have nothing to do during my snow day tomorrow! Zoe is lining up someone to come and plow and start up her generator, so that is good. We can help her but must wait until the 11 miles or so between us is plowed. She is better off with local help.
Needless to say, the sixth graders are working hard, but have really already started their snow day!
1:42 pm on January 26th, 2015
Mom just let us back on the ipaw. She went to Chaco Canyon in the “70’s” as a part of a foto project, amazing! Did some climbing video/movies in Joshua Tree in CA. Good to hear from our east coasters. Conn. says it is shutting down roads this afternoon to all but Emergency and First Responders. WOW.

Martha, remember those days well…but not fondly!. First year in TN, had storm headed in. Schools to get out early. Mom’s day done and no duties. Asked principal if she could leave as she wasn’t quite used to weather…NO. Got to leave at 3:30 instead of 2 π Had to park and hike last 2 miles home…uphill. Thankfully not barefoot as she had put boots and mittens and hat and coat in the truck. Never turst an administrator!

T and G’s Mum–thank you for the additional information. Everything I learn about the native peoples of the U.S. comes to me late in life (somehow mostly got left out of conventional school history lessons) and is much appreciated. I could also get behind such an equitable structure.
BSD–Yeah! (I wonder if they someone does tours?)
Wookie and Teddy’s Dad–Never been to Chaco Canyon but have heard about it all my life and it is not so far away as those other places! Another excellent prospect!
Those of you in the path of the weather, get those errands done, snug in, and be safe. (I won’t mention the temp here, but we are hoping in our pathetic way for some rain later today.)

I think he looks like his daddy, sans facial hair of course! Cute, cute, cute!
BSD, Thanks for that video. For some reason it made Barb a little teary. Do you think the dog is a Picardy Shepherd, or a P.S. mix?

No idea what type of dog but beautiful and talented. Mom sobbed her way through the video. 15 great minutes π

River Kennedy Carpenter in a Stormy Kromer! His grandma is soooo proud! I honestly think River looks just like his dad. That is a great photo with the all black and white-ish tones and then the red and black cap.

B&M&L, Guess we are all toooooooooo California. Spongetta ran away and hooked up with “Rickey Bobby” (or some other silly name) But now they need a place to live and have gone to mom’s rental that the s son lives in. Sometimes I think that we are more fun than Wolfie Wigglebutt! Anyway, RJ seems to work so we may add him to the rental contract so mom gets paid and then put the s son on the eletric (of an all electric house) so the bills even out for thoses 3 and they can pressure each other π Cross fingers and say prayers.

I put together a sandwich at lunch that was healthy and extremely delish. I toasted a piece of hearty, multi-grain bread, slathered it with about 4 Tbl. of hummus, then topped with a thick slice of deli smoked turkey, white cheddar cheese, sliced avocado and red onion. I served it (to myself) open face. The hummus was lower in fat and calories than mayo. It was different and really good!

6:40 pm on January 26th, 2015
Hey everyone – finally back to check in.
So glad that GLAD posted pics of the little River bear, all bundled up in his winter snugglies.
Massachusetts is officially shut down – you drive on the roads without a true, provable need to be there, you get a hefty ticket. On the local news, instead of the regular cancellations it just says the name of the town, then “CLOSED”. In other words, stay your butt home!
We got all of our errands done. We didn’t even go near a grocery store, but traffic was insane every where near any grocery or gas station.
So, we finally gathered our mail from the post office, and got home to batten down. Opened one piece of mail, and found that brother’s former employer was sending us a bill for the two months of health insurance and life insurance between the day brother went to the hospital, and the day he crossed the Bridge.
What? Why do WE have to pay for his insurance? Spitting mad about this – especially since we have been in and out of the business many times to talk to the boss, and offered to pay said expenses back when there WAS an income from his insurance. Now there is nothing left, and we are getting a $1400.00 bill.
6:53 pm on January 26th, 2015
Consult an attorney. You personally cannot be liable for his debts.
6:57 pm on January 26th, 2015
We probably can’t be forced to pay – BUT the place he worked is a place that we frequently patronize. If we don’t have that place, we have to go all the way over the bridge in that traffic for similar service.
So we feel very caught between a rock and a hard place.
7:00 pm on January 26th, 2015
T&G’s Mama, you may be next of kin, but you are NOT, repeat not responsible for his debts! We think if you fight, they will back down. Beside, it gives us more time to come up with an alternative to their statement.
7:27 pm on January 26th, 2015
And now with the CONN and MASS closures, your answer should be, “Bite me”. Sorry but it sounds good and it is what mom would do in your circumstance.
7:34 pm on January 26th, 2015
Might not do it with my weird family, but would do it in your circumstance.
